Excellent resource
The authors have created a resource that addresses the violence of discrimation on the basis of gender, class, age, sexual or religious preference, ethnicity, and physical abilities.The excercises andactivities are easy to use and the authors have also included an extensive"Resource Section" with plenty of additional materials/referencesand advice on how to incorporate the activities into core subject areas. Although recommended for upper elementary thru high school students, theactivities can be modified for lower elementary grades also.I highlyrecommend this book for a teacher who aspires to teach his/her students tolook at themselves and society with sensitive, critical, and educated eyes. ... A Fantastic Resource
This is by far the most comprehensive and informative reference book to date on bilingualism and bilingual education. As an encyclopeia (not a text book) it is an important resource for interested scholars, students, journalists, and others. Comprehensive and Authoritative.
If you're looking for a single, comprehensive source on bilingualism, this should be your choice.The authors are noted authorities.Dr. Baker has written numerous books on the topic.The volume is well organized, packed with data, including information on the major scholars in the field.As its title suggests, this work is encyclopedia--not a textbook.

A Little Too Thorough!
I used this book as the text in a university linguistics course. Baker and Jones are very thorough in their analysis of bilingualism and bilingual education.At times, they are so thorough that the subject matter is much too elementary and common-sensical.It's also extremely repetitive.However, as a basic and solid reference for any questions or research one might need, this volume is sure to help. ... The Good, the Bad, and the misundertanding
The reviewer who criticised the method of using association (even with English words) misunderstands the purpose of such mnemonic techniques in learning languages, and so a portion of that review is just invalid as being from one who misunderstands.
How To Memorize a Language Without Really Learning It
Truly effective language learning requires thinking in the target language, not association with sounds and words of your original language. While the Lucas method of memorization may work well for students who want to score high marks on tests, true mastery of a language comes from knowing how its elements are built from the inside, not from constructing superficial outside details that have nothing to do with the language. For example, on page 113, to memorize the Spanish word "medico" (doctor), memorization of the phrase "May I doctor you from over here, Miss Dee, the cobra?" is supposed to help.But isn't it easier (and more helpful) to learn "medico" as a cognate of the English word "medical"? That way, the learner can extrapolate the meaning of other Spanish words similar to "medico" instead of memorizing an entirely different nonsense phrase.When you're in a Spanish airport, trying to catch your flight on time, is fumbling around with Miss Dee the cobra really going to help you?

The stories are mediocre at best, there is no answer key for the grammar exercises and the price is astronomical.The paperback book weighs in at 150 pages and is priced at $41.00!Absolutely ridiculous.

Great for students or classrooms
For an intermediate student of spanish, Breves cuentos is a magnificant tool for building an understanding of hispanic literature and vocabulary.Great insight to the lives of the authors and their literary styles.

Absurd
I ordered this book as a means of sharpening flagging Spanish language skills.I sent it back immediately, it was that bad.First of all the book is tiny (which is an insult considering the price); secondly the biographies of the authors (written in English) are longer than many of the stories themselves, which isn't saying much.Thirdly, though there are a variety of pre and post reading grammatical exercises there is NO ANSWER KEY, which renders all of the exercises meaningless. ... As the title suggests this book is aimed at those interested in the aquisition of vocabulary in a second language. Readership is probably more aimed at academics, researchers, advanced students, and teachers who have amore than a superficial knowledge of this area. A good and useful series for ESL teacher.
Having never used the first edition of this series, I picked up New Interchange Level 1 so that I could have a structured series to help my students learn general basic English skills.I have been pleased, and findthat overall it is a good series to teach from. THE GOOD: Each chapter inNew Interchange has a good variety of skills to learn and practice. Students are constantly engaged in reading, writing, listening, speaking,learning new vocabulary and practicing new grammar rules.The contentisn't too heavy, and the book makes good use of color and white space so asnot to overwhelm the student.I find that the structure of each chapter isconstant and reliable so that the students become used to how things aredone.The tapes and Teacher's Guide are invaluable!The workbook providesadditional practice of concepts that the students have just learned in thestudent book.All of these resources combine to make it incredibly easyfor me (as a teacher) to prepare and give good lessons. THE BAD: I havefound that my students are often confused with the grammar exercises.Whatmay seem like clear-cut explanations to a native English speaker obviouslyaren't that clear to the learners.I am also a little saddened by the factthat each chapter really doesn't go into great depth for any one skill ortheme.Each skill is presented, learned and practiced in what sometimesfeels like a rushed manner.I have also found it difficult to present anentire chapter in two one-and-a-half hour sessions, as the authors suggest.OVERALL: A good series with lots of skills practice.It is very usefulfor learners who want to study a variety of general English skills.Verynice for overworked teachers who don't have a lot of time to preparelessons.

Getting Better!
The latest edition of "Interchange" is certainly an improvementon the original. Teachers who have been using the old book for years willbe relieved to see agonizing sections from the old book removed. And thesubject material andsequencing of grammar,listening and speakingactivities is better too. The workbook is also vastly superior to the oldworkbook . However, one of the major weaknessesof the old book stillremains-the Teacher's Book. Thelack of an abundance of really goodspeaking and grammar activities forces the teacher to do alarge amount ofpreparation work.
