Disappointed
I live and work as a Realtor in Southern California, so our Mexican-American community here is quite large. A great deal of my clients are Hispanic, most speak only Spanish. I am lucky that I am bilingual so I can therefore serve my Spanish-speaking clients quite well. However, I too, need help with the Real Estate "lingo" from time to time to translate the terminology correctly. I was very disappointed to see that this book was way too complicated, too legal sounding, too technical, too much over-the-head of the average non-English-speaking farm worker client. These are people who barely know how to write their own names; some, I am pretty sure, cannot even read or write Spanish. The "definitions" or translations in this book needed definitions to explain the definitions! It's like when I look up an illness in the Taber's Medical Dictionary, I end up having to look up the meaning of the medical terminology they use to define things! Ms. Guerra should come & visit here in Southern California, and talk to some of these farmworkers. I am sure she would understand that they do not speak FORMAL, educated Spanish; that they speak "Tex-Mex", or "Spanglish". This book did not have any definitions for some very basic, Real Estate terms that we use here everyday, such as, "roof", or "septic tank", or "tile countertops", or just the word, "countertop". It was when I realized that Ms. Guerra had not even put the word "roof" in her book, that I realized that she probably does not know anything about Real Estate itself. That is too bad! Where did she get her Real Estate terminology definitions from anyway, in Spain? The language in her book sure did not sound like anything any of my simple clients would understand. I was indeed, very disappointed.

Pennycook's book is challenging but full of gems
I can understand the previous reviewer's frustration with deconstructionism, but he shouldn't take it out on this useful book.I've found it an invaluable addition to my library, and I've cited it frequently in essays.I think this book has to be approached with considerable background in post-structuralist thought, and then it's a gem.I highly recommend it for its stimulating ideas and critical points of view.It's not necessary to agree with everything written in it in order to find its value.

who saves us from deconstruction?
While his previous work revealed many interesting facts about ELT, Pennycook's post-modern ideology leads to disaster in "Critical Applied Linguistics". Indeed, the book's structure is so postmodern that there is hardly any frame left for reader to cling to. The only overarching structure is Pennycook's construction of the four schools of applied linguistics and this classification is extremely questionable. Often one scholar is taken as representing a whole school. In the case of Widdowson, his argument is misrepresented to suit the construction of "liberal ostricism". Read more

Excellent
This book will really bring to light exactly how children learn to identify themselves.This book will reinforce the truth that prejudice is learned and that adults play a huge role in the value systems that children adopt.You'll also find a few things in here that make you giggle...after all the book is about a kindergarten class.

A Teacher's Memoire of Diversity
Paley developed an understanding about why kids behave the way they do. When I was in pre-school in the early 80's I had teachers who were like her; Jewish women who knew how to make the day enjoyable and constructive at the same time. However, Paley has one talent that most teachers don't have, and that is a vast threshhold of patience. She coaches a little boy away from his bad habits, using praise instead of punishment, and as a teacher I find such tactics superb. But it takes even greater effort not to get angry, and that's why Paley's efforts are sucessful.
truthfulness is liberating

Excellent Study Aid for the CSET
This is a well-written, informative book on preparing for the CSET Multiple Subjects.The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that it has a couple of sections on the entire test and then focuses entirely on the Language Arts subtest.I really wish they would finish the book and cover ALL the subtests!But, for the Language Arts stuff -- it's great! ...
