Very informative
I picked this book up from the library and had to buy a copy. It has information on pretty much every situation a car owner will come across.It covers the basic run-down of a car's systems and parts and how much you should expect to pay to fix or replace a part. It also has a great section on buying or selling a car, and checklists for periodic maintenance. After reading this book, I feel a lot more confident that I can handle any car problems that might come up. Pick up this book (if you can find a copy) for anyone, female or male, who tends to "neglect" their car because they feel overwhelmed by the amount of information they think they need to know to keep it running. This book makes it simple.

very helpful, for men and women alike
I checked this book out at my local library, but found it so helpful that I wanted to buy a copy to keep in my car (which I'm currently in the process of buying, with aid from this book....) I can't express mydisappointment with finding it's no longer available and can only hope thatone day it will be again. Until then...check to see if your library has acopy too!

Wish there were still something like this

A Nice Reference
This book is layed out by Marque alphabetically.A handy guide to the many builders and evolutions of British sports cars.It is important to note that this book focuses on sports or sporty cars produced for sale to the public.The general formula used to define a sports car is a production vehicle of light weight and relatively high BHP when compared to other vehicles of the time.Most are offered as open top roadsters.Racing history and early motorcars are not covered very much except as side notes.However, those cars that are covered are given rich color pictures and clear writing that typically will detail the design history as well as provide context regarding the time frame of the car design and information about the builder. ... Most used book on my shelf....
I'd have given it 6 stars if it had color photos. This is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in vintage Ford and Fordson farm tractors. Plenty of details and b/w photos illustrating the details of each model and a chronological listing of model year changes. This is the one I reach for for quick, accurate information. Old technology but maybe this is what you want
Although this book has a copyright date of 1996, the newest engine data I could find was 1987. It is a good reference for crate engine suppliers (I assume most are still in business) and general selection information. It is heavy on race/hotrod/performance applications but has info applying to daily drivers also. And it has a chapter on preparation and startup of the engine. It discusses carburetors, and "old fashioned" distrubutor ignitions with vacum advance. If you are looking for data on updating your 90's GM truck to a modern Vortec (like me), this is NOT the book to get. There is no info on using modern ignition/engine management systems. Nor any data on throttle body or fuel injection. There is no data on engine mount fitment for swapping older/newer engines into vehicles. ... Read more

I tend to agree with other reviewer about this book needing to be completely rewritten. Even though it was revised in 1994, the author still makes references to things occuring in 1987 "at current press time." Clearly, the original text wasn't revised. If the book was revised in 1994, these type of references should has been eliminated. Other than the text being out of date, the book itself has a lot of worthwhile information. The author rates the collectability (if that's a word) of each of the cars using a five star system.

Useful, although outdated
I disagree with other reviews that recommend you don't waste your money on it.I know of no other book that provides the information that this one does, and found it extremely useful when shopping for a BMW.I wish itincluded a table (which I ended up creating myself) of "Buy/Don'tBuy" models. Desperately needs a rewrite
This was probably a fine book when it was first written in the early 1980s, but it's been badly (cheaply?) updated since.It's now almost incoherent -- certainly not up to the standard set by some of the(excellent) other books in this series (Corvette, Mercedes, Ferrari). The best 'Used Car' book I've found... ~c:)
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.It not only does a thorough overview of many different makes and models of cars and reviews things like 'overall buy', 'crash testing', etc.But it also gives a 10 point check onhow to check out a used car to see if it worth taking to a AAA Diagnosticbefore getting the diagnostic.Read more
