5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is one of the few resources for those who want to find out something other then what Teddy Rosevelt did. Honestly I read this at least once a month. Other reviewers say it gave a veiw that the children did not feel they could change things, but they did. He devotes an entire chapter on the newsies strike, and does an unbelivablely good job of showing the fun side of this life that our history teachers and Jacob Riss tell us was horrible.
4-0 out of 5 stars Children of the City by, David Nasaw
In his book, Children of the City, David Nasaw writes about the struggles, poverty and literal abuse suffered by children, mainly boys, of the early 20th century.Mr. Nasaw also talks about the so-called "child savers" like Lewis Hine who worked through his camera in order to make people aware of what was happening to their children at work.Children of the City was controversial when it was published back in 1986 due to its somewhat graphic or "real" depiction of child exploitation in the turn of the century.
4-0 out of 5 stars Children of the City
In the book Children of the City: At Work and At Play, David Nasaw brings readers into the lives of children all over America at the turn of the century.Nasaw begins by giving us a description of the area in which the children were raised-mentioning the run-down cities and tenements where the working class resided, while also being sure to briefly mention the other half of the population that lived in great wealth.Since there wasn't much room around their houses, most middle class children simply played in the streets-gambling, playing baseball or kick the can, etc.The book discusses in great depth, and with great historical accurateness, what life was like during this time period-the school, the job and the home life.Nasaw paints a picture for us-vividly letting us experience life right along with these children as we turn the pages of his book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for child witnesses of violence
This is a very good book to help children who are witnessing violence or for adults who witnessed violence in their childhood. As this book points out, domestic violence between parents is the most threatening and damaging to a child because the child does not feel safe at home anymore. The young child grows up in fear for his or her physical safety because the caretaker is no longer providing protection. Other types of violence that affect children are also treated in this book such as street violence, and TV violence. It's amazing how little work exists dealing with the effect on children of being a witness to violence. This is a ground-breaking work, and I hope that the author extends the book in future editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A compelling read and an invaluable resource
Whether you know a little or a lot about the impact of exposure to violence on children, this book is a compelling and powerful read."Children Who See Too Much" is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to recognize and understand how we can help children impacted by violence, whether we are their teachers, social workers, mental health professionals, child welfare workers, other professionals, friends, or family members.Ms. Groves has woven together a compelling tapestry of children's stories, research findings, professional experience working directly with children, and thoughful policy and practice recommendations. The information on how to talk to your children about terrorism and war makes this book particularly relevant in the complex world that children and their parents must now negotiate.Ms. Grove's extensive experience as a pioneer in the field of helping children exposed to violence has provided an invaluable resource and a must-read for those who care about the well-being of children and their families. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Afro-American Children
I thought the book Different and Wonderful was an excellent book. I came across this book at the Philadelphia Free Library, when I was doing a report on Afro-American children development and socialization process. I thought the book had a lot of resourceful information about raising Afro-American children as well as giving resourceful information to Afro-American Parents on how to look at themselves and checking themselves as Afro-American parents.I am not a parent yet, but I will be oneday.I am very glad that I had came across this book because, I know that I will be a better Afro-American parent, when I do decide to raise my Afro-American children. Also, this book has equiped me with stronger child rearig practices on how to deal with all ages of Afro-American children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A different perspective on the effects of life under the Nazis
WITNESSES OF WAR: CHILDREN'S LIVES UNDER THE NAZIS is a riveting, involving survey which uses original material from children's schoolwork, diaries, letters from evacuation camps and more to recreate the child perception and experience during the war. Many of these children had to take over when parents couldn't: their stories provide a different perspective on the effects of life under the Nazis, and should be added to the chronicles of any serious Holocaust representation.
5-0 out of 5 stars unbelievable
This book was one of many I have read about Nazi inhumanity. The difference is that this one was centered on children.I was so astonished to read about the cruel and inhumane way the Nazis treated their own children that did not "conform" to the current political climate. My question, after reading this book is, are the traits that the German people seem to have had during the Nazi period part of the human condition, or part of Europe, or part of the first part of the 20th century, or what??Is it in all of us to act and react as the people described in this book? This book is a MUST READ for anyone trying to understand the authoritarian, parochial and nationalistic actions of the Nazis and all Germans during the third reich.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed exploration of Nazi rule on childrens' lives
Mr. Stargardt brilliantly explores how Nazi rule affected the lives of children of all nationalities in wartime Europe during WWII.Through extensive research, the author shows how children thought and acted when faced with horrific experiences.Great historical writing and not a dull paragraph therein. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Inspirational Book
I read this book a few of years ago, before my son was even walking. Looking back on it, I realize that I've incorporated many if the author's suggestions in working with my son, and I think that has helped him feel comfortable in talking to me about his experiences. He told me I was going to have a baby before I even knew I was pregnant; this prompted me to take a pregnancy test. He told me the baby was a girl when I was about two months pregnant. And, later, when I was very pregnant (about 8 mos or so), he told me that he was playing with his sister in his bedroom at night. He also tried to get me to 'see' her, by pointing out what he called 'balloons with light in them' that would appear in the bedroom. He said this light was Sofia and her friends. Later, a nurse at the Dr's office told me that she often hears about children his age (3 at the time) predicting pregnancies, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Children's Spirituality
One of my favorite childhood dreams, a recurrent one that I had when I was around seven or eight, is that I am conducting a symphony orchestra. That would be a special experience in itself. What makes this dream more interesting is that I am making up the music, note by note, as we go. Almost like the wand that Mickey Mouse borrows from the Sorcerer, as I wave my baton, the music comes into being. In the dream, that is a thrilling experience. What is even more interesting is that in the dream I am noticing that the orchestra seems to know what notes to play even though there are no notes until I wave them into being at that very moment. In the dream I am puzzling over how the orchestra can play the notes at the very instant that I create them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!
This book has inspired me to listen more closely to the children in my life as well to my own inner knowing. As adults we can forget this source within us with all the external distractions in our lives. The stories Tobin Hart shares reminds us we all have the ability to listen from within.
