5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!I am not alone!!
I am the quintessential third-culture kid.I was on a plane taking me to Singapore before I could walk. This began my life traveling from country to country following my father's career in an oil service company.Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Netherlands, and all points in between. This was my life until in was time for university, and I moved back to the States. When I read this book, I feel like I am reading the diary of my life. For the longest time I often wondered what was "wrong" with me.Why could I not fit in, why did I not feel at home?
5-0 out of 5 stars An explanation of why we are the way we are
To me personally it was like reading my own psychological profile, complete with explanations of every weird quirk and odd personality trait, good or bad, that I've ever displayed.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read
This book is a well-written, clear and systematic treatment of what is surely a difficult theme, because everything pertaining to TCKs is so personal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and enlightening!
My daughter is now on the verge of turning 19 and has just left for college, and though there is no turning back the clock, I really wish that (while she was still living under our roof) we had had more of the kind of discussions that Drs. Sharon Lamb and Lyn Mikel Brown recommend in their very eye-opening and engaging book, Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters From Marketers Schemes.Although I should have known better, as a baby boomer child of the 60s and certainly part of a generation that prided itself in its individualism, its cynicism, and its power to challenge and question the version of truth that was being handed to us by a materialistic, antiquated and male dominated society, I am guilty of naively assuming both that we had come further along in dismantling negative, restrictive female stereotypes, and that my own children wouldjust naturally be born into the world with the same skeptical and critical eye that my own generation actually had to acquire.I realize now, that as enlightened as I thought I had been, I did not do all that I could to help my daughter interpret and critically dissect the narrow image of girlhood and womanhood that has been sold to her by marketers and media. Is it too late now?I'd like to think that is never too late to have these kinds of discussions.I hope that my daughter will read this book before she becomes a parent one day, so she can begin these discussions much earlier with her own daughters.I have already recommended this book to my book club and my colleagues at work, and it is amazing how much interesting conversation it has already elicited.I highly recommend this book to all parents, future parents, and anyone who naively thinks that "pretty in pink" is an old stereotype that we have long gotten rid of. If you feel that changing "pretty in pink" to "sizzling in hot pink" is progress in a positive direction, then maybe this book won't do as much for you as it did for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST Read!
Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters from Marketers' Schemes should be required reading for all parents. I would go even further--it should be required reading for everyone, because the girls who are being bombarded by the media have brothers, uncles and aunts, cousins, grandparents and friends who probably are buying into the marketing schemes--and should also be educated.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Secrets of 'The Secret of Childhood'
Since 1936, when her seminal work 'The Secret of Childhood' was first published, Maria Montessori has been the leading figure in promoting a holistic education approach to children of all ages.Concepts as radical as the three fundamental freedoms (the freedom to repeat work, the freedom to move around the classroom and the freedom to choose which work they want to do) that each child should have, blast forth form the pages like a breaking news story.5-0 out of 5 stars Montessori's Philosophy is respectful and beautiful.
This as well as many books written by Dr. Montessori are enlightening, educational and serve as a model for all parents raising children today. Her vision of peace and all of her teachings need to be brought to responsible parents and care givers. Children are our future....peace was Maria Montessori's vision....teach it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Incompetent preaching and ignorant theories
I had high expectations for this book based on prior reviews, and was severely disappointed.Instead of expected profound insights into child psychology and wise practical advices, I founda wordy discourse on the life of bees and butterflies, shallow preaching, and amazing ignorance. As a child psychologist she is plain incompetent. One example:describing a situation where a child started crying when a stranger brought in an umbrella and put it on a table, and stopped crying when the umbrella was taken away, the author attributed the crying to some mysterious "love of orderliness" in babies, instead of realizing the obvious fact that the child was simply scared of a large unfamiliar object, as is often the case with small babies. The author is ignorant in general science as well. For example, she claims the knowledge of human anatomy didn't exist at all untill 17th century, completely ignoring the rich experience of ancient Egyptians etc.Overall, this book is outdated, ignorant, and shallow, and is of little practical help in bringing up children. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Point, Painful Read
What really endangered the success of Bettie's message was not humanly bias, but her writing style.Bettie tries so hard to convince the reader that her study is important that she becomes verbose; she spends so much time telling us everyone else has it wrong (except for her) that her tone goes from conviction and pleasantly tenacious to grating. The complexity of the issue need not result in literary inaccessibility.Bettie's sentences stretch into several lines and her chapters become bloated when they could easily be summed up by what most people already know:we're missing the rest of the picture if we just focus on gender--it's a more complex issue...otherwise known as:you can't see the forest for the trees.

5-0 out of 5 stars best book I've read all year
"Women without Class"is a tour de force of exceptional scholarly research and keen social observation.Bettie does a tremendous job exploring how class operates in many powerful, yet subtle ways in the lives of young women in one California high school. She highlights the role of economics, but also addresses issues of race/ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.Through sustained, in-depth ethnographic research, Bettie illuminates the complex social dynamics of a community and brings the personalities, experiences and worries of these young women to life. The book is honest and sharp, reading almost like a novel.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in sociology, education, youth, race/ethnic relations, or gender.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read for those working with Teens
As a person who works daily with young people both in and out of academic settings, I found this book gave a fresh perspective on how we view teenagers (both men and women) and the influence we have on their lives; especially those influences that are unconcious on our part.It changed the way I perceive my students and gave me new tools for communication.I also thought it was a terrific read; often dramatic and moving.I highly reccomend this book to anyone whose work or lives are connected with young people in America. ... The book was all highlighted in certain chapters. It was false advertise like new. I wish I had spent the extra five bucks on a new one so I could made my own highlights instead of having all highlighted with different colors like in three chapters. Thank god, I only used the book twice for 2 important chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Child of Divorce
This book is extremely well-written and presents information in a concise, easy to understand manner. I was on a search for self-understanding when I came across this book. I was intrigued by it because never before have I seen a work presented in light of the children of divorce who are young adults. I feel as if I better understand who I am and WHY I have the thoughts and behaviors that I do. It was such a relief to know that I wasn't the only one feeling at odds with life after my parents' divorce. An excellent, must-read book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Ruffling Some Feathers...To Save Our Kids
I rarely read other reviews before writing my own, but in this case I was curious to see if earlier readers had expressed outrage at the author's premise. Response from readers to date appeared rather sympathetic to Ms. Marquandt, which suggested to me that this work may be reaching more childhood survivors of divorce than the perpetrators. I do wonder if the author is pleased with this apparent outcome, since her concluding remarks seem more directed toward adults in the contemplative stages of a divorce; the editing of the book does not necessarily serve that purpose.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shaping the Inner Lives of Children of Divorce
I read "Between Two Worlds' nine months ago and have struggled ever since to complete this review. It was painful to read and even more painful to review.Elizabeth Marquardt has authored an extremely valuable book - one that can stand tall next to the works of Judith Wallerstein.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Anecdotal Information, but Limited in Scope
Although children have never been fully excluded from acts of war, the rates of child participation in armed struggle has increased dramatically in the past decades. As such, a growing literature is emerging on the subject and drawing light to a growing global problem.Riggs work spans the developing world in the search of personal accounts of children at war.
5-0 out of 5 stars A deeper understanding about the experience of child soldiers
Jimmie Briggs, the author of this book details with great compassion and strong writing the personal accounts of children who are recruited as child soldiers. His telling of their stories deepens your understanding and connection with this growing humanitarian issue. As you read the book you cannot forgot the personal stories of the children that Jimmie meets. These children linger in your mind and heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Innocents Lost: When Child Soldiers go to war
One of the most alarming trends in modern armed conflicts is the practice of using children as soldiers. These children are deployed both by government forces and guerilla groups. Inspite of several international initiatives to stop the child soldiers, including the United Nations practice of 'naming and shaming' the parties engaged in this practice, children continue to be used as soldiers in armed conflicts around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unequal Childhoods Well Written and Well Researched
Everyone knows that socioeconomic status is related to academic success, but not many books have examined the lives of kids outside of school in detail to reveal how differences in social class are related to differences in use of language, organizing time, dealing with authorities, family disputes, and doing homework.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Unequal Childhoods"
I read this book for a class about the achievement gap.I really liked how this book examined the achievement gap from a socioeconomic point of view.Lareau's case studies of families from varying races and social classes made her research easy to read and interesting. Her analysis of two different parenting styles-concerted cultivation and theory of natural growth-points out the implications each style has on children's performance in school, their interactions with adults, and later success in searching for jobs/careers.This was a great read for school or just for fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great look at parenting differences across different economic backgrounds
I was asked to read this for a class assignment and was delightfully surprised at what a great book it was!The different case studies about different families were very insightful into different types of parenting as well as how parenting and economics may impact children's achievement both in school and in extracurricular activities.A good read for those in the education field or for a parent interested in seeing how other families deal with the busy schedules of their children and how that may impact their family life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The existing one that implements his opinion
I like the crisis in african american culture and the hip hop generation because it allows me to know what is going on in the world. Reading that book taught me how to give back to my community if I ever had fortune and fame. It talks about how people should stick together like flies to feces rather than be against each other. It talks about how the military should give money to the community rather than spend money to send people to Iraq and have their lives taken. It talks about how the military should fight for democracy. Those are some of the things that I've benefited from the book. I think the book is interesting. I would recommend the book to anyone who is into stuff like the crisis that african american have.

This is one of the best books for the Hip Hop generation out in circulation. His nononsense views are understandable and shed light on many current issues in society. I think everyone, parent, teacher, community leader, and political assosciate should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars All kids are our kids
Outstanding resource for anyone who works with youth (or anyone who has a heart for youth). I am the director of a large youth and community center in Los Angeles and this book has truly motivated me to work to build a stronger "community" with local schools, parents, neighborhood agencies that focus on supporting kids and their families.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant work, carefully explains how to be a better parent.
This asset-building approach to youth development and community development is solidly based on extensive research and meta-research.Thousands of youth have been surveyed to yield the great information.Written for parents, community volunteers and professionals who work with children & youth, it describes 40 qualities (or assets) which help youth thrive. The more of the 40 assets a youth has the better he/she does.A university student body president I knew felt he had 39 of the 40 assets; since I knew him to be a fabulous kid, it validated the asset-building framework for me.I urge every parent to get and read this, apply what you learn to your kids, and then go out and make your community more youth friendly.I have 3 copies; two of which are "loaners".

5-0 out of 5 stars Important new approach to human development
Thus book bridges from science to practice, offering a new model for engaging many sectors of community-family, neighborhood, congregations, employers, schools-in creating settings and relationships to build developmental strengths. When one looks at youth through the lens of developmental assets, everything changes.Read more

This wonderfully presented photo display of Amish children captures what it's like to live in an Amish world where English is a second language in America, where there are no modern technological devices, and where family ties are unusually strong. Beautiful color photos capture the Amish child's world.

4-0 out of 5 stars COFFEE TABLE BOOK ON THE AMISH
It's ironic that readers are attracted to pictorial books on the Amish, considering that sect's well known aversion to being photographed.Amish children are a particularly attractive subject. This is a beautifully produced book, mostly depicting the Lancaster County Amish, photographed by a transplanted Lancaster resident who has earned the trust of the community. This book is recommended for all readers interested in the Amish - particularly for the many people who visit Lancaster County each year. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The statistics are daunting: "Two out of five girls nationwide have had sexual rumors spread about them," reports Leora Tanenbaum. "Three out of four girls have received sexual comments or looks, and one in five has had sexual messages written about her in public areas." The 50 women interviewed for this book differ greatly in ethnic background, age, and economic status, but they share one thing in common--each of them, along with Tanenbaum herself, was labeled a "slut" in junior high or high school. (And, as recent cases involving Anita Hill and Monica Lewinsky demonstrate, a woman can face such taunts no matter what her age or professional level.) As such, they became victims of a double standard that winks at sexual promiscuity among teenage boys but insists that young women remain virginal and pure. Even worse, the slut bashing is perpetuated in nearly every case by female classmates. In addition to insisting that schools get serious about combating sexual harassment, Tanenbaum urges the development of sex education programs that acknowledge responsible alternatives to abstinence, programs that would recognize the sexual desires of young women (and men) without condemnation. Her social critique is solid, but it's the personal accounts of emotional abuse--and, thankfully, perseverance--that will thoroughly convince you that the current tolerance of slut bashing is simply unacceptable. 5-0 out of 5 stars Read it for a college class.
I had to read this for a class I took last summer. It wasn't something I would have chosen on my own, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was rather good.
1-0 out of 5 stars loose, and poorly narrated.
Might be interesting for a reader that is not in tune with what goes on at public schools.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read but not fully honest or emcompassing
Slut. What does it really mean? The term has multiple uses for multiple purposes. The author fails to acknowledge this.On Oprah she revealed herself to be a woman (now middle aged) who had to deal with "long lasting" negative psychological effects of being called a "slut."

5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable understanding of a complex issue
I was pleasantly surprised to find this book so readable. This issue is a concern for all parents, educators, youth group leaders, and others who care about raising responsible citizens.Drs. Prothrow-Stith and Spivak write as if they are talking to you over a cup of coffee and explain the multi-faceted, grass roots, common sense approach to understanding why violence is so much a part of American society. While the statistics are frightening, the over all tone of the book is positive. They describe what can be done and encourage us to do it. ... Read more
