These are our children
While violence rates have been in decline in many cities over the past few years, there has been a steady increase in violence involving young people in many cities across the country.When a similar increase occurred in the late 80s and early 90s, the country reacted on the one hand with mass hysteria, enacting punitive criminal justice policies, tightening civil liberties for those suspected of gang involvement and on the other with community based programs designed to promote positive youth development, national youth organizing programs and research to promote primary prevention of youth violence.Lost in this reaction was a clear sense of the perpetrator/victims of youth violence -- who they are, how they fare after their violent involvement, and what can be done to help them cease involvement in violence.This missing voice is an important one as it potentially provides a view of a remedy for prevention from those most directly affected by violence.

Serious account of the crisis today's teens are facing
There's a saying..."Life isn't always easy," and for many of today's youth it isn't. For many it never was.
Harshness and Heedlessness

timely but nowhere thorough enough
I hesitate to examine these teens' stories in any but the most complimentary detail, simply because the damage suffered by the subjects is far beyond anything I experienced at that age, and the author is to be commended for letting their stories be heard and examining the factors that led to their having such a horrendous time. Still, I wish this book had:

Excellent
This book has really helped us to open our eyes and look at our current culture and how it might impact our new son.It covers media and mass marketing and how unscrupulous marketing to children has become.Before I read this I didn't understand just how insidious some of the marketing is and I would just mark parents who complained about it as "a little crazy or too strict".
I may never write this again:

Entertaining, with a few problems.
I picked this up used, and read it very quickly - it reminded me of one of those so/so CDs from a usually great band:all the great stuff stacked at the beginning, with an increasingly less interesting wind-down.
antisocial studies
Fascinating look at different groups of Japanese youth culture in the early to mid 90s. We peer into the lives of 12 people, including: a mid-level Yakuza debt collector; a porn star and director looking for a big score; students cramming for entry to the University of Tokyo; a hot young 20something caught between club culture and the traditional arranged-marriage culture of her parents; an obsessive computer nerd; and more. Each chapter is presented as a narrative and is also supplemented by sociological and historical information, which makes for a quick, engaging read. It's all fairly nihilistic, though - Japan of the 90s is a fragmented, contradictory culture, and it's not surprising to see why some of these people have carved out such peculiar, stilted lifestyles.

This book was new; still in the plastic.Delivery was as expected-on the early side of the estimated time.

"Home Town" horrors
Ron Powers is concerned about the young people of the United States. He's not alone in that. His interest is immediate and rather local. He worries about the events in his home town of Hannibal, Missouri. Sorry, i should have typed "Home Town", since Powers accepts the assertion that his native city is the model for others in his country. "America's Home Town" implies a small municipality dominated by a white, middle-class, "God"-fearing, clean-living population. The images of such places dominated the media for generations. That image has been tarnished - in this case by the killings of two elderly men in Powers' birthplace. He went there to investigate what had happened. This book is the result of his journey.
AUTHOR DELIVERS A COMPELLING READING
Ofttimes, an author brings a greater depth of understanding to a reading of his work than does a professional actor.Such is the case with Powers' reading of his latest offering, a sad but necessary visit to Hannibal, Missouri, the hometownhe shares with Mark Twain. Hannibal, MO was a good place - a place Mark Twain would still want to write about and still call home. And Hannibal's crusade to retain its association with one of America's greatest authors continued even as its population pushed out and away from its 1926 civic monument to Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, and it changed. The gewgaw attractions, souvenir shops and then Wal-Marts andSuper Centers took their place as the source of the pulse of Hannibal's community. How we are harming our children
This may be the first time in history that we have forced a generation of kids to be separated from their own parents. The results of this grand social experiment are beginning to come in. And Mary Eberstadt does not like what she sees. Nor should we.

This book is excellent.
Thought-provoking; rasises important questions
I live in a blue state, and mostly agree with what most people think of when they think "blue state".However, I questioned my liberal thinkiing while reading this book.Why?Because I have been concerned this year with how many 6th graders in my neighborhood come home to an empty house. And I see how divorce has affected my son's young friends.

Education Classic
Despite having been written in the early 80's the themes and ideas raised are still thought provoking and relevant. A really valuable read for anyone working with and advocating for children!

What exactly is Postman so afraid of?
It's hard to take Neil Postman seriously after reading his _The Disappearance of Childhood_, in which he argues (p. 87) that television is bad because it teaches children homosexuality is normal and praises the Moral Majority as being the only group to realize this important truth. And true, he admits it's an exaggeration to say "such a situation necessarily and categorically signifies cultural degeneration", he does insist it clearly "poses dangers".
Recommend for Parents and Others Who Work with Children
This book offers an unusual and rewarding historical perspective on childhood. I had never imagined that there would be a connection between the invention of the printing press and childhood, but Postman shows there is one.Read more
