5-0 out of 5 stars A Wakeup Call for Parents and Parents-to-Be
Once you read this book, you'll realize how aggressively you and your kids are being marketed to -- right from the time you get those "free" product come-ons at the obstetrician's office. Schor does a brilliant job of showing us how the demand for more and more goods is creating by the marketing spin doctors. Make this your book club's next pick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid argument against the commercially constructed childhood
There's not doubt that corporations, advertisers and marketers do not have your child's best interest at heart.Schor provides a comprehensive account of the what, why and how marketers are targeting your children.
4-0 out of 5 stars If You Have a Child, Read This Book Immediately
Simply put . . . if you're not left in shock within the first 50 pages, you haven't been reading.Ms. Schor's account of our nation's perverse youth-directed advertising, market research and media practices is a profound eye-opener.You will be appalled at what our children are being subjected to - not to mention the hyper-sophisticated marketing strategies & manipulations that take place behind-the-scenes, to ensure our children's psychological captivity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized, repetitive...
For those who are just now studying the history of Europe in the last mid-century, this all-embracing book on the impact of Nazi planning on all children may be a good place to start. For someone like me who has been reading about this stuff for about five years now (since being introduced to the medical ethics of Nazi use of children in medical school), this book tended to be an adequate rehash of a lot of information I had been introduced to in other books. Those books such as 'When Medicine Went Mad' by Caplan, the Nazi Doctors and the Nuremberg Code, 'Crying Hands', "The Origins of Nazi Genocide" by Henry Friedlander...and many, many more, this book did not contain enough new information, or provide new philosophical or ethical or moral input into this awful time in our human history to be worth the read.
5-0 out of 5 stars If it had just ended with the Nazi's....
No one will ever know the number of children killed, injured or made to suffer during World War II. The number of children simply vaporized in the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or the fire storms in Tokyo or Dresden will never be known. Tragic as these incidents are, the deliberate actions of the Nazi's stand out with a particular cruelty because they were deliberate, the active policy of the Government that should have been in charge of their welfare, not their death.
5-0 out of 5 stars True-believers who killed
If you need a reminder of the continuing hurt to families caused by World War II, direct your browser to www.its-arolsen.org . The site, in a complex of buildings in Arolsen, Germany, houses an organization called the International Tracing Service. ITS was established by the Western Allies in 1943 to help cope with the millions of human beings in Europe uprooted by World War II. The work of the ITS and its 15 miles of files continues to this day as people continue to attempt to discover what happened to loved ones.

A must have for all mothers of young daughters. This is the reality and we all need to be aware.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good concept
Girl Culture's concept of women is interesting. The photos show how women see themselves. Some really great and revealing photos.

3-0 out of 5 stars mildly interesting
This book is ok, I would consider it as a gift to a woman under 30. As a male reader, I found the book a bit boring as a photojournal, but the stories were mildly interesting. Not an addition to a personal library, a read and donate in my opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars superb!
I used "Huck's Raft" in a senior seminar I taught in the fall 2005 semester on Children's Health, Education & Welfare, and it was one of my students' favorites. It works especially well as a first book in a course, because it is so comprehensive and engrossing.Seldom do academic books read as well as this one.It is literally hard to put it down and, at the same time, one learns so from it much chapter after chapter. For a history of childhood in the U.S., this is probably the best book available.I cannot recommend it more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars good general discussion, loses detail toward end
Delving into the complete history of childhood in America is a huge undertaking, and for the most part Mintz handles the difficulties with detailed aplomb.Surveying the culture of childhood as lived by children and as represented and mythologized by current or later society, Mintz moves from pre-colonial times to the very-near present.
4-0 out of 5 stars The More Things Change?
An excellent scholarly work that brings together a lot of work on the history of childhood in America.Mintz is concerned with looking at the way in which we have mythologized childhood and to what degree the truth is reflected in that mythology. What he discovers is that our recent conception of childhood is a fairly modern phenomenon.Along the way, he constantly draws our attention to the fact that childhood experience varies greatly depending on class, race, religion, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Introduction to this disturbing aspect of modern international affairs
Being an International Relations student about to embark on a years study on this subject I was looking for a solid grounding on which to begin my study and this provided a perfect answer. Singer uses simple dialogue and logical progression in his publication to provide information on the recruting of child soldiers, what they are subjected to in the field, the difficulty of soldiers facing children, the worst culprits, reintegration of soldiers and proposed methods of ending this aspect of modern warfare.
4-0 out of 5 stars Chilling, Sad, Provocative, Scholarly
The Author writes about a chilling new chapter in post-modern warfare. It is a very objective and scholarly work that covers in comprehensive detail the underlying causes, recruitment, implications and response to "Child Soldiers". The author calls this a "new Doctrine" and not only covers the problems, techniques, tactics and procedures; but, also offers lessons learned and suggestions for countering this new dimension of warfare.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Changing Face of Warfare
The face of warfare has changed dramatically in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In the first years of the new millennium, we rarely find state-led armies clashing across the boarders of sovereign nations.Rather, most wars occur within the boarders of an autonomous state.Civil and guerrilla conflicts have replaced the international and colonial wars of the recent past. All too often, the armies fueling these new internal struggles for power are composed of children.

1-0 out of 5 stars They need a ZERO star rating
Now, I think talking about any child, regardless of sex, being violent is ian important subject. But when you focus the discussion on girls then you're completely missing the point and putting the undeserved and unfair attention on girls NOT BOYS. For example:
5-0 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT BOOK FOR PARENTS
I completely disagree with the previous reviewer who slams this book (and others with similar concerns about today's youth) in such a tunnel vision manner. This book is an important social commentary for any parent to read, and for any adult to ponder.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another misleading "teen panic" book
Dr. Garbarino's book is indeed "shocking" and "scary"--not about girls, but about the continuing decline in scholarship regarding young people. The entire factual basis for this book is open to serious question.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
I was required to read most of this book for grad work in Urban Education. Interesting material (for a required reading). The best of the books I've been required to read so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars pretty good account of immigrant children
Children of immigrants covers the experiences of children of immigrants and their families through the past few decades when the United States has been receiving immigration from non-European countries and many of these new immigrants are non-English speaking so there are plenty of osbtacles in their way. The authors deal with such important issues of how immigrants arrive in this country. There are some families that come toghether while others may be split up. One spouse may come before the rest of the family or sometimes children are sent to live with family members before their parents come over. The question of identity is important. What culture do the children of immigrants feel closer to? What determines this? There are several factors such as parents, schools, peer groups and the larger society. Education is anouther big topic. Immigrants tend to put a high emphasis on education though immigrant children have varied education achievements. They can often be the best at school or towards the bottom. The authors look at how people such as parents, principals and teachers all affect education for immigrant children. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book that is true to life!
I couldn't put this book down and read it in one day.I have also read Kathy Harrison's other book "Another Place at the Table" which is also a great book.I feel that this book is very true to life from what I have experienced dealing with the foster care system.Kathy gives faces and names to the injustices that often occur to children in this system. She also talks very realistically about the horrible trauma and abuse suffered by children before they enter the child welfare system. This would be a good read for any prospective foster or adoptive parent to give them an idea of the sorts of things they may have to deal with.My husband and I have adopted one son from foster care and it has been the best and hardest thing we have done. Some times I wish I did not know about what happens and has happened to children in foster care because that would be easier. On the other hand I know that I have been put on this earth to advocate for certain children that have crossed my path and I would change nothing.I think that Kathy Harrison must feel the same way and I admire her greatly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very moving - couldn't put it down!
This is an amazing story. I couldn't put it down becuase I became so interested in the fate of the characters. How blessed they are to have been able to be part of the author's home in the midst of their turbulent lives - even if for a short time. But the author reiterates that it is SHE who has been blessed by their presence. Very poignant, highly, highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible for child maltreatment cases
Too many child abuse petitions are being filed today based on bad medical information. This book helps distinguish for the prosecution and the defense the signs and symptoms that are abuse related andare not related to abuse. Aside from providing accurate and complete material necessary to cross-examine a witness in a child abuse case, it is a wealth of information on the experts in the field.Essential book for the child abuse defense attorney's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Parents Call
Many experts and famous people support this books: Marian Wright-Edelman, Bill Cosby, Alvin Poussaint etc. but as a parent I want to say this book has helped tremendously. The pain my daughter and I were experiencing together and respectively was enormous. This book was a really helpful step along the long road of healing. It is many tiny hurtful incidents that can leave a large wound. It is from this wounded place that people find their violent selves and lose control. This book helped me understand that and so I understand my situation and daughter better.I treat this situation with a level of understanding and calmness that I never had before. The absence of this often made me verbally violent towards my daughter, only making our situation worse.I thank the authors for calling out a problem that everyone wants to ignore. With or without the support of experts and famous people- as a real person-I can say book gave me tools and hope and combined with other measures hashelped create a better life and better for me and my daughter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Answers to an eras problem
This book does an excellent job of identifying, articulating and fleshing out a problem that is so ingrained in our culture, that few people realize what a problem it is.Often it is only hindsight that offers the insight that this book gives regarding the toxic levels of violence in our society.Hopefully, this book and books like it will offer a new, more sophisticated and enlightened way for humans to solve problems. Because it is all fun and games until someone loses and eye. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars book
This is an excellent book for Early Childhood Educators. The book iseasy to read and it covers before birth to 12 years of age. It has excellent resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful information
Although this book is a textbook I purchased it as a new parent for use as a guide to my daughter's development. While it does contain a great deal of useful information it doesn't go into significant detail about any particular phase of development but rather gives an overview of each stage, hitting the highlights. Nonetheless I would buy it again and think it was a good investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars general review
This book gives the basic expectations for the ages specified. The book breaks the developmental expectations down by age, and covers most developmental expectations such as physical and cognitive and social. This is a good beginners book or one to reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book
This book presents lots of information.I did find some chapters seemed repetitive as others suggested. However, overall I found
1-0 out of 5 stars consider your audience
The book was very disjointed and repetitive.I guess that each chapter was written as a separate journal article. It was a lot of facts and statistics, but there was one statement in the book that ruined it for me..."the availablity of ultrasoud makes the perfect outcome possible." ..referring to the use of ultrasound for sex selection. I don't agree with the gov't regulations of reproduction in China, but I also don't agree with any endorsement of sex-selctive abortions. Anybody who buys this book is likely in the adoption process of one of these prescious little girls and has possibly gone through numerous infertility treatments. Probably not the best audience for pro-choice undertones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, yet repetitive
I am a graduate student studying the One Child Policy, orphanges, and abandonment in China. I found this book to be very informative. It provided many statistics, which I found useful, and gave new insight into the topic of abandonment. The author's research is fairly limited - she interview ~750 families, but was suggestive nonetheless. Because the book is a compliation of essays, it is pretty repetitive. I would be interested in more academic works on this subject from Johnson.

3-0 out of 5 stars invisble children
This anthology discusses young students that face problems that educators often do not see, thus rendering them "invisible":subjects include battered girls, Appalachians, immigrants, gay youth, among others. This book tries to juggle race, class, and gender matters, but it so heavily focuses on girls that I would almost consider it a women's studies text.I am a bit worried that the contributors are trying to say, "It's not just students of color and disabled students that face oppression at schools!" in ways that may divert much-needed attention to those two groups.Still, I am willing to give these writers the benefit of the doubt.
