5-0 out of 5 stars Read this before your child discloses the molestation
I was unprepared to hear my 5 yr. old disclose that our neighbor had molested her.The Sheriff's department focused on her and as a parent I needed to understand what to do for her and for me.This book helps teach you how to respond to your child when they disclose. With so many children being molested, the likelihood is greater than you think. If you are not prepared, your emotions get in the way of supporting your child when they need it most.If I'd have read this book before, I would have responded differently.I recommend reading it even if your child hasn't been molested.....yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any parent dealing with this situation
I wish this book had been given to me the first time we started to uncover this mystery with my 4 1/2 year old daughter. Once we entered the "system" the experts seem to forget that the parents are starting at "ground zero" and have a lot to learn.Even after begining counceling, working with Children Services etc... there were so many unanswered questions and our personal struggle with denial - ("it can't be what she is describing".)This booked helped me so much, expecially the list of "signs".Thanks to this book, we were finally able to understand that many of the behaviors that our daughter was showing at the time stemed from her trauma, and helped us move through the process of healing.PLEASE READ THIS BOOK if you are going through this with your child. The most important aspects of the book for me were 1) the list of "signs"2) reassurance that children don't usually make these stories up unless it was real and 3)that children don't tell the complete story at first - so they don't hurt the parents / and their own fear. Which is why it is so important to listen to your child and give them the love and assurance they need. ( and take the information your child is telling you seriously)In the end - this book helped us put most of the pieces together and helped more than the councelors to bring "peace" to us as we moved through the healing process, and reassured us that what we were feeling and the family process were actually normal. (and we were not alone)

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone who knows a child
This is one of those books I bought for the title. The title is a play on the notorious No Child Left Behind act and its role in federal education policy, notorious not only for its lack of funding, but also for its excessive reliance on standardized testing. My only regret with No Child Left Different is that it did not take on that particular set of villains.

I am very pleased with this purchase. It was just the book I needed to add to my collection of middle school literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a middle school principal...
I heard Linda speak at the National Middle School Convention in 2003.During her presentation, she used quotes from this text.I was so intrigued, I purchased the book that day and read it in its entirety throughout the following days.
5-0 out of 5 stars I know how it is,
First of all, everyone that says this book isn't accurate is retarded. I go to WSMS and this book is so right it's like it was written by an eighth grader. She does a great job, perhaps you people don't have the insight to realise this book goes deeper. This book even helped me understand myself, I recommend it to girls and boys my age (eighth grade) who are looking to see through the eyes of another. It's hard being who we are, and this kinda makes it easier. :) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that good
I have read about three quarters of this book and my biggest problem with it is that the testimonials by the boys seem really contrived, as if their words have been doctored up or forged. He has interviews with twelve year olds that flow so beautifully and articulately that it actually comes off as very inorganic and makes you wonder whether or not these kids' words have been doctored up. The vocabulary these kids use is often too sophisticated sounding for their age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guys Will Talk it Out or Act it Out. HIGHLY Recommended!
Real Boys' Voices is a powerful journey into the minds of guys who have been raised to `hold it in' `be a man' `don't show how you really feel' and this sad list has haunted growing boys well into their painful adult years.

This is a jarring and eye-opening collection of voices often unheard in our culture. It is highly recommended that this book NOT be read until one has looked at his first REAL BOYS offering. The first work povides the theorectcal context within which these testimonies are most powerful. This is valuable reading not only for counselors and parents, but for pastors, teachers, and all who work with or care about boys and their lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant, powerful, important
Ordinary Resurrections is one of the most important books I've ever read and one of the most poignantly beautiful. It is an absolute must read for everyone who cares about children, the wide disparity in economic opportunity in the U.S., and who dares to hope for our future. Kozol movingly brings to life in his first-hand descriptive account the lives and conditions in their own words of children and their families who have been deliberately neglected, ignored, hidden away. This true story of their hope, strength, resilience, and beauty testifies to the dominance of the human spirit in the face of unspeakable abuse by government at every level and all systems that have failed them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching Portraits of Resilience
In Ordinary Resurrections, Jonathan Kozol deviates from his usual "gloves off" attack of the issues facing minority children. Instead of building the case against the inequitable system with facts and figures, as he has in previous work, he has chosen the subtle but effective approach of a storyteller. He paints a very descriptive portrait of the victims of continued segregation and racism that may inspire those in positions of influence to make more compassionate decisions regarding the lives of the children they serve.5-0 out of 5 stars Anything but Ordinary
This powerful work is at once inspiring, frustrating and captivating.Kozol draws the reader into a world called Mott Haven that is filled with substance, love, service and hope.He poignantly describes the lives of children while blasting the manner in which we have chosen to deal with our most needy sectors of society. Kozol's gifted and powerful storytelling reminds us of several truths:Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Transnational Adoption: Beyond a Singular Lens?
This edited collection by Toby Volkman has a fair few adoptive parents (who are academically working as anthropologists) playing the roles of interrogators, interpreters and story tellers of this global phenomenon. Sometimes the object of their analysis is their own community (adoptive parents) and sometimes it is Others (birth parents, the overseas children they adopt).
5-0 out of 5 stars Mapping Transnational Adoption
Toby Volkman, editor of this volume and an anthropologist, describes the uncharted territory and cultures that transnational adoption is fast creating as the "new geographies of kinship."Indeed, the contributors to this thoughtful volume examine with courage and carefully grounded research, difficult subjects, such as the motivations of birth mothers in relinquishing their children to international adoption, or the struggles of adoptive parents and their children as they seek to constitute new identities despite minimal cultural knowledge of their children's country, gaps in memory, and the absence of connections with birth parents. The themes range widely to include the power of the internet in shaping popular representations of international adoption; the ways in which mythologies and fantasies confront realities as adoptive children make return journeys to their country of origin; and changing national policies of sending countries as they reconsider the stigma they once associated with mixed children adopted internationally who were the product of love and war.The contributors pay close attention to the larger political and economic forces that frame the contradictions and struggles entailed by transnational adoption. At the same time that they do not fall into the trap of romantic narratives of rescuing children, they are sympathetic to the good faith efforts of families to make sense of a world for which few road maps are available. Most, but not all, of the authors are adoptive parents themselves and therefore do not lose sight of the positioning and perspectives underlying the ethics and practices of all the actors and institutions involved in these journeys. This is first-rate ethnography. The book is beautifully edited and well-written; the language is accessible; and many first-hand accounts are offered.I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in gaining a solid introduction to the complexity of the issues involved in transnational adoption, as well as to readers more generally interested inkinship, marriage, and the family. ... "By placing black girls at the center of her analysis, Kyra Gaunt challenges us to be ever mindful of the importance of gender, the body, and the everyday in our discussions of black music. The Games Black Girls Play is an exciting and original work that should forever transform the way we think about the sources of black, indeed American, populat music. This is a bold, brilliant, and beautifully written book."-Farah Jasmine Griffin, Columbia University

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Suitable for Children
The news media has already informed us of the world's youngest victims of poverty, violence, sexual abuse, and disease, but Fr. Dunson has given these children a personal identity. In each story, from Uganda to El Salvador, we know the children's names, their fear, their struggle, and their resolve.Sometimes there is hope and when it is absent, Fr. Dunson convincingly assures the reader that not only can we make a difference in their lives, but we have an obligation to make that difference.5-0 out of 5 stars An appeal to our consciences and hearts
Donald Dunson has traveled the world and spent time with, reached out to, and listened to the children whose stories he tells in this profoundly moving little book. On these pages we meet children who've had their childhood, their humanity and any sense of their own worth stolen from them, as they are forced find a way to survive in a cruel and uncaring adult world:kidnapped to fight in brutal civil wars, forced to flee for their lives from their own country, fending for themselves in crowded refugee camps, homeless and officially invisible on the streets of Kampala. However, the sorry litany of the inhuman treatment these children have endured is not the end of the story...The real story presented here is the difference that someone caring, paying attention, reaching out and offering hope and encouragement can make to the millions of these children in third world and first world countries. Stolen childhoods and innocence can't be returned, but lives can be given a sense of worth and direction and the hope that we are one family, as has been done in the Kenyan hospice for HIV-positive orphans, Nyumbani, where the children have a wonderful sense of mutual support and community.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unwanted aren't always on welfare
Unfortunately, this author fails to include unwanted children that even come from wealthy families. Unwanted children of wealthy families often end up in similar circumstances. Even though the focus of this book is primarily for families in poverty, the author fails to realize even further, that often times, children from wealthy families end up with NO HELP and NO RESOURCES for their plights, in contrast to programs specifically designed for those in poverty. He fails to recognize the value of programs as a universal ideal, as does the Federal Government.
4-0 out of 5 stars Honest and On Point
Patrick Murphy brings a wealth of knowledge and experience into this books discussion of povery and America's developing underclass.I would agree with many this book is not easy reading, but rings true in many respects.4-0 out of 5 stars informative yet entertaining
Although the legal terminology may turn some readers off, I found Murphy to be painfully honest and accurate with his description of the foster care system. As a teacher who has also been a foster parent, I have been witness to some very disturbing situations, and I am still not sure what is in the best interest of the child, long term. Murphy's use of humor certainly helps deliver this message, and I would recommend this book to anyone who works with children. ... Read more

The childrens' stories really gave me a great understanding of what it must be like to have lived or continue to live in Israel/Palestine.Stories of love, heartbreak, hate, understanding, confusion provided an understanding of the impact of the conflict in the lives of real people instead of just the political views. If everyone tried to understand and care for both sides of the conflict as presented by the stories in this book maybe we would find the motivation to create peace. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great work from a dedicated author
Few seem to understand the aftermath of the US involvement in Southeast Asia better than Robert McKelvey. The stories of abandoned Amerasian children told in "The Dust of Life" ring true. The author's later work, "A Gift of Barbed Wire," tells the equally painful stories of our abandoned "allies." Having once worked with the 4,000 Amerasian children living throughout Thailand, I would love to see the author examine the fates ofthe Amerasian children left behind in Thailand. An examination of the Lao "seminar" (reeducation) camps is long overdue as well, and is certainly well within McKelvey's reach.

4-0 out of 5 stars shameful heartbraking stories!
this was a very informative book about what took place during the war. These stories were really sad. I would like the author to write another book about this, and expand more on their lives after coming to America, and detailed accounts on meeting their american fathers...This story which is non fiction, has opened my eyes even larger to the horrors of love affairs during war, and the tragedy it brings to the innocent children involved. ... Editorial Review

Journalist Edward Humes shows us a little-seen side of our nation's educational system: the side that works. Humes spent a year (2001-02) at Whitney High School in Cerritos, California, a small, middle-class suburb of Los Angeles, where he taught a writing workshop and observed the daily workings of this top-ranked public school. The book honestly examines the extraordinary effort (and elusive chemistry) it takes to achieve that status and the subsequent toll it takes on the remarkable students at the school. It also provides a wonderful portrait of American life. For all its distinction, Whitney High School reflects a cross-section of America, where immigrant families struggle with their American counterparts to guide their children toward academic excellence. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Exploration of Over-Achieving Students
In School of Dreams Edward Humes "chronicles the year he spent inside one of America's top public high schools."The students he shadows, interviews, and profiles in the book are the type of over-achieving students that attend the best colleges in the nation.I've taught at a couple of very good universities, and I found his descriptions of Whitney High School students, students so similar to those I've taught, to be insightful and moving.I'm amazed at the sacrifices these students make to achieve their high levels of academic success.Sure, they make stellar grades and AP and SAT scores and pack their CVs with extra-curricular activities, but they do so at the expense of sleep, health, pursuit of personal goals not deemed sufficiently academically or financially rewarding by their parents, and sometimes any sense of deep learning.Humes forces me to view my own students as whole people, not just academic success machines.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting case study of a top California high school
Humes details the turnaround of Whitney High in Cerritos, California, which went from the brink of extinction, where local schools dumped failing students, to becoming the number one school in California. This is an example of what can happen when schools set high expectations for their students.Although a public jr./sr. high school, students must take an admittance test to be enrolled at the school.Once enrolled, students are told that they must apply to at least 5 colleges, including at least one public and one private. Most of the students aim for Harvard, Yale or Princeton, due to parental pressure.
4-0 out of 5 stars Learning From a Successful School to Help Failing Ones
"Success is ignored while failure is funded," is the astute observation of one of the long-time teachers from Whitney High School in Cerritos, the number one public college-preparatory school in the state. The author of School of Dreams, Edward Humes, spent a year at Whitney as the Instructor of an essay-writing workshop. He was there to help the students skillfully sculpt the influential personal essay that would be the last piece of the college admissions puzzle.During this time he experienced the world of Whitney, with its high achievements, quirky structure, and determination to be a model of a successful school.Within this adventure the author introduces us to a variety of students, with some of the student's writings punctuating the chapters. The information in this book is presented in a narrative style, telling stories about individual students, teachers, administrators, as well as the history of the school itself.Within the chronicling of this academic magnet school, several requisite factors required to make a school successful is challenged.Part of the success of Whitney may be do to the fact that only those students with adequate scores on standardized tests are allowed to inter the school, that these students are motivated by parents with hefty dreams for them, and that this high school contains small classes that begin in the seventh grade. There are other aspects of Whitney that fly in the face of political reform, such as the need for large school budgets, technological advancements in the classroom, and standardized tests to keep teachers accountable. In some ways these reforms, indenting to raise the achievements of failing schools, are not found to be aspects that make Whitney the successful school that it is. I found exciting insight and revealing truths found in the presentation of one of the most successful public schools in the country. There are many aspects that will cause one to ponder and rethink how to approach education in the future because of the successful past of this school. ...
