5-0 out of 5 stars Suffer the Little Children by Mary Raftery....How sad!! It needs to be told!
Ever since the movie .."The Magdalene Sisters" and Frank McCourt's book..."Angela's Ashes", Plus the fact that I am a quarter Irish and love Ireland and her people,I find I want to know more and more about her people and the TRUTH of how they have suffered yet have remained strong and vital and are proud and have given much to our world today!(England should be ashamed of what they have done for far too long, too!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Shameful Irish Catholic
This book is comprehensive and deeply moving.I could not put it down.I was disgusted and angry by the end of it.I am ashamed to be Irish and ashamed to be Catholic. How this could have gone on for so long with no help for these children is beyond words. If there is a hell, then open arms to all those sick and sadistic Brothers and Nuns, all of whom were operating in the name of God....!How dare they call themselves charitable and merciful. They are some of the most vile human beings in existence.Between that and the sex scandal in America, the Catholic Church owes many people an apology and some sort of restitution. For shame the Church still chooses to cover up it's misuse of power. If the Nuns and Priests and Brothers were not so sexually frustrated, maybe they wouldn't be so evil.Sorry to vent so strongly. After reading this book, you will feel the same way. Also read Do Penance or Perish, but not as good as this book.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suffer the little Children a most fantastic written book

5-0 out of 5 stars Challengesthe Paradigms of Children and War
In this meticulously documented book, Rosen takes on the controversy over child soldiers on four sites -- the World War II partisans, the civil war in Sierre Leone, the Palestinian intifada, and the United Naitons agencies and affiliated non-governmental organizations that draft treaties. He exposes the myths that child soldiers are either wild demons or exploited angels, revealing children as surprisingly independent decison-makers, sophisticated thinkers, and rational, responsible yet eternally subordinate social actors, constrained by contexts of violence. Rosen, who is both an anthropologist and an attorney, has drawn on his own fieldwork and cultural and legal understandings, to create a book that is deceptively readable but so deeply analytical that you will never see the connection between children and war in the same way again.Evryone who has a child, or has been a child, or cares about our planetary future, should read it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Handbook for child protection practice
This handbook is edited by Howard Dubowitz, professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine with many years of experience in the field of child abuse and neglect, and Diane DePanfils, assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, with more than 25 years of child welfare experience in social work. The book is devided into ten sections with a logical sequence from disclosure through the various pathways of the child protection system: Reporting and screening, Engagement, Interviewing, Initial assessment, Family assessment, Service planning, Intervention, Evaluation and closure, Legal and ethical issues and lastly Child protection practice with special issues for the practitioner. There is a total of 124 chapters, each one short and to the point with useful information for the professional. There is a total of 77, all American, contributors from a multiprofessional background. We liked the idea of a list of editors and contributors and their affiliations, but would have liked to have an e-mail address also, in these cyber space times. This is a handbook, not a textbook, and therefore the information in each chapter is short, but we found it usefull, informative and with good references, that will help the reader to look further if the need arises. Children with intellectual disability (ID) are at risk for exploitation both physical and sexual abuse, which is mentioned in the handbook and that is important, but we would like that the next edition change the terminology from “retarded children” to “children with” intellectual disability (which today is the intenational term) or developmental disability. This should also be reflected in the index. All in all we can recommend this handbook for professionals working in the field of child protection... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful Insights on Reality of Latina Teens
This work includes a broad range of research on the current realities of Latina teens in the U.S.I found several of the articles to be very insightful and enlightening."Latina Adolescent Girls" should help policymakers and service providers design programs to support Latina teens, and by extension, Latinos in America. This kind of positive scholarship is essential as more and more of America becomes defined by a bi-cultural reality, in schools, workplaces and other settings. This book should contribute to better understanding and policymaking that affects America's new majority minority. ... I have this book on tape. This family reminds me so much of our own.We are out the other end of the tunnel now as well with a very positive outcome.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written book that gives hope and direction to families
I work with families who are struggling to find hope and healing for their children who have attachment issues. The Jonathon Letters provides a rich and meaningful story of the hopes, fears, struggles and triumphs of one family in their journey.I have already begun strongly recommending this book to the families with whom I work and have added it to my list of required reading for both the staff members and parents with whom I work. This book provides a wonderfully honest and realistic insight into the hopes and fears so many families face.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Informative Book
With over 17 years of experience working with severely traumatized children in a residential treatment setting, this is one of the most helpful and enlightening books I have come across. It challenged me to look at the children and adolescents I work with in a different light and gave me new and innovative ideas to be able to work much more effectively with our children. The suggestions that Michael gave Lorie were strategies that I have used repeatedly and found effective. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Lavishly presented and formatted, but is lacking...
One can tell that Nicholas Orme has done extensive research on this book, digging up any and all facts about medieval children, and I applaud him for making the effort for what promised to be interesting subject matter. However, the fact remains that children were NOT extensively documented then, like they are today, and Orme digresses (distractingly often) into the realm of personal conjecture and an almost constant apology for the lack of sources. What I found most irritating was that about half of his sources date from Tudor England, which is better categorized as Renaissance rather than Medieval, and NONE of his sources predate ~AD 1,000.But the illustrations are heavenly, the hardback editon is a joy to handle, and I did learn quite a lot, but overall, the project was rather more ambitious than the material he had to work with.

4-0 out of 5 stars The nice side of the middle ages.
A couple of years ago Steven Osment published a book called "Ancestors," which sought to criticize the views of Philippe Aries that people in the past had treated their children incredibly callously.Unforuntately, Osment's book was brief and somewhat superficial, even though he was basically right. This book is one that Osment should have written, except that Osment is a historian of Reformation Germany and Orme is a historian of medieval England.Contra Aries, Orme and his fellow scholars "have gathered copious evidence to show that adults regarded childhood as a distinct phase or phases of life, that parents treated children like children as well as like adults, that they did so with care and sympathy, and that children had cultural activities and possessions of their own."They book is lavishly illustrated and based on all sorts of information, from archival studies, to records of the royal family (the family most studied), to an abundance of visual evidence (Pieter Brugel's "Children's Games" is used to special effect).Orme has also found archealogical evidence of toys and school books that children have scribled on.4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information.
Everything you ever wanted to know about medieval childhood but didn't know who to ask.And some beautiful illustrations as well.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Relationship is more then me or my child
Child development or "raising" is not something that is done either by child (The Nature) *alone*, or by parent (The Nurture/er) *alone*, we are just parts. 3-0 out of 5 stars Centered on the experts, not the advise or children
Perhaps my very mixed feelings about this book came from unmet expectations.I thought it would be a book about the history of the actual advise given American parents---how advise about such issues as toilet training, sleep and eating have changed over the years, and how this affected parents. However, the book was actually much more about the experts themselves---THEIR childhoods, education, marital problems, academic careers, etc. This might be interesting to some, but it wasn't to me for the most part. The book had a feel of an insider sort of expose---written for those in the academic world.Children were mentioned very little, except if they happened to be the children of the experts themselves. There was much delving into the psychological history of each expert, but I found that at times I had a very vague idea what the experts actually advised! For example, Hall, an early expert, had his life opened for scrutiny, but I would be hard pressed to explain what his child care views were. The writing was scholary and confident, but in no way personal---the author's children or her own views are not mentioned. So I guess I would just advice that you know what you want to read about before buying this book---It might be just what you are looking for, but it might be far from what you are looking for.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only a beginning
Our parent education book group agrees that advice-giving to parents has been complex and inconsistent. However, identifying an "odd couple" (experts who give contradictory advice) for each period of the century is arbitrary, contrived, misleading and inappropriate. Hulbert mentions that she selected advice givers who had spoken at national conferences. Otherwise, she give us little information about her biases or about the criteria she used to select individuals highlighted. Why did she choose L. Emmett Holt (not a well-known individual) and G. Stanley Hall (who focused primarily on adolescents)? The protaganist format meant that in the recent years, advice-giving "giants" such asThomas Gordon, Hiam Ginott, Jean Piaget, B.F. Skinner, Erik Erikson, and Rudolph Dreikurs barely receive mention. A history book on parent advice IS needed, not only for scholars, but also for parents to understand their own upbringing. This book barely begins to fill the need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air
This book was a breath of fresh air for me, as I will bet it has been for many others - both male and female.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sequacious stereotypes
How can sex-roles be inherent when, throughout history, they have remained fluid?
4-0 out of 5 stars The Human Potential
This book goes a little too far in denying differences between the sexes but on the whole it should be read by anyone who, like myself, finds sociobiology/evolutionary psychology an exciting new area for understanding ourselves.
