5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping up with the Carbones
If anybody has packed more common sense into such a small space as David Reay has accomplished with this book, i've missed it."Common sense" is the concept which supposedly governs our daily lives. However, somewhere along the way, there's been a slippage. Our lives, and that of our children, are under threat. Our common sense couldn't perceive the rapid rate of change occuring in the environment around us.Now, we must take back charge of the future.Reay isn't asking you to make drastic changes in your lifestyle to accomplish this.Instead, he demonstrates how small steps can improve our condition and make it sustainable for our children. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest books I've ever read
This book was incredible. I have never read anything so thought-provoking and well-written. I highly suggest that you read this book to fully understand the transition from membership to management in American Civic Life. Enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Urge to Belong
A very nicely written book that raises several speculations. The author points out that in the 19th century, many of the local groups that people joined were chapters of national or transnational organisations. This was part of their attractiveness. Joining a local group gave comradely ties with others across the nation, that you had never met, and probably would never meet. How peculiar was this to the US, as compared with the European countries from which many of these people recently left? Is there any way to quantify this? A little unfair to ask, perhaps, because of the sheer amount of research needed to flesh it out. But the above questions arise naturally out of the research summarised in the book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reviving civic associations that are not trivial, obsessed

5-0 out of 5 stars Citizenship made real
This is a fascinating book about citizenship and immigration.Given the growing importance of this area, I found this book to be quite useful.I do a fair amount of work in Washington, D.C. on immigrants and benefits, but I didn't know much about the area from a theory perspective. This book was great for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars History comes alive
I've never thought much of academic political histories.I depend on similiar books as a remedy to my sleeping disorder. But Ms Feldblum's book has turned my head. This is one fabulous read.Since reading"Reconstructing" I've been able to enchant my co-workers withtales of French immigration.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 1-Star, 1-Sentence Reviews Made By Folks Only Reading Book's Title!
I'm a non-stupid White Guy. The title is not racist. It states a simple fact - the vast majority of real political and economic power is currently held in the hand's of Stupid White Men! This is certainly the case currently in the United States. The truth is not racist, but reality. I also personally know plenty of wannabees!
1-0 out of 5 stars Racist

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope!
As a cynical old curmudgeon who finds fault in fellow humans more often than praise, I am humbled and inspired by these creatively energized folks.Their success stories and positive attitudes remind me of a long-ago time-the sixties, when the organizing and action sometimes resulted in social change.Maybe this book won't change the November election, but it could.Even though this little primer in voter activism could have written by The League of Women Voters or included as a chapter in every United States high school government book, its message is now conveyed in a language and style that can connect with those who will determine the future of this country. The "can do" attitudes, organizing skill, and creativity recounted here are the key to waking up a tired, disillusioned, and disheartened electorate. These ideas turned into action can prove that democracy works. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This will change the way you think about everything!
I finished the book this afternoon -- and immediately opened the WAll Street Journal to a funny little editorial about how there are no diving boards at public pools in America because everyone is so worried about lawsuits.Strange as it sounds, Mr. Kemmis' observations about people being unable to look beyond individual goods to think about a common good provided a framework for understanding even the diving board question! The author of that editorial basically said, "Somehow, depriving our children of a childhood because we're so wary of lawsuits cannot be good for our country.I worry about where our country is heading,"and Mr. Kemmis goes on to tell us where we WILL be headed if we continue on as a fragmented, polarized society.
4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
Required reading for anyone who wonders how America came to be a divided, polarized nation. Kemmis traces the traditions of American political discourse and relates them to current civic debates. Another book that deals with the need for a sense of community is M. Scott Peck's "The Different Drum: Community-Making and Peace," 1987.

3-0 out of 5 stars a respectable book

5-0 out of 5 stars Succeeds at Every Level
Ms. Orleck has written quite a book: it is important as history and social commentary, it is instructive for organizers and activists and it is a heart warming story of the beloved Ruby Duncan and her associates who faced adversity, poverty and discrimination with intelligence, resourcefulness and courage. They fought an uphill bsttle for human rights and economic justice in Las Vegas, and they had some very significant victories. Lastly, it is inspiring, it spiritually recharges the reader to take on today's injustices. Though the author is a scholar of some distinction, the book is very readable and is told in the participants own words so it is very immediate and straightforward. It is wonderfully suitable for high school and college aged discussion groups in school or faith based organiztions. You'll never forget Ruby Duncan. Highly recommended for entertainment, instruction, inspiration or all three! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little reminder of man's bestiality
Here is a comprehensive review and analysis of three different contexts in which torture took place: Ireland, Israel and Chicago. Conroy's intellectual honesty is ravaging...

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good and well parked
The aboved name book, I bought was well parked, new and it came to time.Appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful, but difficult read
Most of this book examines three case studies, from numerous different angles, unveiling the mentality of torturer and tortured alike. The breaking up of the three cases into non-sequential sections aids readability a bit, and the whole tone of the writing is very collected and non-sensational. It does a great job of pointing out not only the details of the individual cases, but the importance of those tortures as events for the societies involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do the Right Thing - Read This Book!
This book is a compilation of columns by America's strongest voice of liberty, Dr. Walter E. Williams. In this book Dr. Williams offers his common sense, freedom-loving take on the vital issues of the day. He fearlessly confronts the many liberal fallacies responsible for eroding our precious liberties. A must read for anyone wanting to expand their base of knowledge and unafraid to confront stark truths. A great antidote to the toxic political propaganda many of our universities dispense. And, a great book for Blacks brave enough to challenge the ethnic grievance industry (Jackson-Sharpton).

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure and Unfilted Walter Williams
This is a collection of Prof. Walter Williams's newspaper columns. It's in his usual plainspoken, tough minded style. A must for the Prof. Williams fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars He's the best at what he does.
Over the past 15 years I have read numerous works by many libertarian writers. Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Ayn Rand, Charles Murray, P.J. O'Rourke, Dave Barry, Henry Hazlitt, F.A. Hayek, Ludwig Von Mises, MiltonFriedman, Murray Rothbard, Julian Simon, and many others. Walter Williamsis my definite favorite libertarian writer. He tells the plain, simpletruth in a way that is very easy to understand. He presents the facts insuch a way that only a fool could read him and then walk away withoutbecoming a libertarian. This book is pretty much on par with his others.Which is to say, it is excellent. Mr Williams is a true supporter ofindividual liberty, freedom, private property rights, and strict limits onthe size of government. Good for him! ... Read more
