American Government
This book gives a clear,factual overview of the governmental system and institutions in the US. Very helpful especially for foreigners and beginners who want to know more about how the US governmental system works.

Good basic review of American government
I read this book for the CLEP test but I also supplemented it with a college textbook.I wouldn't recommend someone take the CLEP after reading just this book, it is just too basic.Read this book and supplement itwith a textbook for key areas and you'll easily pass the test.

Government is cool!
This book is very helpful and in good shape. Nothing is missing, but you can tell it has been used.

Gotta love Big Ed
Ed Sidlow is one of our foremost minds in American Government today.I have had the pleasure of having both him and Dr. Henschen as instructors, and believe you me, if you could talk to Dr. Sidlow for 10 minuets about Robert Byrd, you would be in stiches!

Good intro text
North Dakota State Univ uses this in its intro to American Gov't course. It is an easily readable text that covers everything that a government text should. Lots of links to the Internet are included as well, and the info is very up-to-date. Covers impeachment and everything else. I'll bet that the next edition includes the whole 2000 election fiasco. I only noticed one error, but that's probably due to the fact that I live in the state referenced. ... Read more

Imperfect, but still the best US Government Text
I have taught AP US Government and Politics for 5 years, and in the course of reviewing most every textbook on the market this one is probably the best overall.
Badly Written Text
This was the assigned textbook for a local university course on American government and politics. I ended up dropping the course largely because of this textbook. It is written a much lower than university level and seems biased towards conservative viewpoints (maybe the non-Texas edition is less slanted). In the first chapter (fourth paragraph) I learned the following:

I totally disagree with the other reviewer. This is truly a top-notch textbook. I have been teaching introductory American Government courses at the university level for 4 years, and I can honestly say that this is one of the finest introductory textbooks available. It covers all aspects of American government in a clear, concise manner that makes it very easy to read. The book is very well-organized, and it truly makes teaching American government a joy. an enriched and inciteful book...
This book is amazing. The reason why I am now a political science major. It is the book that my government teacher assigned in high school, and has thus shaped my opinions towards the constitution and our political system today. It offers a great dichotomy between classic works (such as the federalist papers) and contemporary classics (such as Robert Putnam's 'Bowling Alone'). too many facts, not enough info
The readability of this book is very difficult. It throws a LOT of numbers at you that are insignificant. This does not bode well, especially when it's late at night and youre trying to get through the chapter. The factsand figures overwhelm you when all youre trying to do is pull out the mainideas. But what can you do about it? The teacher makes you buy the book forthe class, so you buy it. Just be prepared to do lots of highlighting toatleast help you cut down on all the unnecessary stuff. ... A must read if you believe in service to others
Paul is an outstanding voice in our world. Fantastic book helping bring hope to a difficult time for those of us who aspire to service. It is a challenge to keep engaged in service and Paul does provide hope. I also appreciate his newsletter and recommend it to those who appreciate his work. Great insights.

Every citizen must read
I read Soul of a citizen which inspired me to action.I am now a volunteer activist in my neighbourhood and have formed a group of concerned citizens to negotiate and participate in our city's development plan. We have made an impact in the corporation and even had a few small successes along the way.

coulda used more cow bell
I really tried to like this book, but Mr. Santorum's efforts fell far short of the fiery, self-righteous rhetoric that I have come to expect in a social satire.While he included the requisite ramblings about "libruls an' commies", completely missing were the mouth-breathing rants about bestiality and "durn Frenchies" that first drew me to Rick's comedic wit.He did have me smirking with his views on education and "intelligent design", but I could tell his heart really wasn't in it.Not his best work; he's much more funny on C-SPAN.

Finally, a politician with common sense
I applaud the author's sense and articulate grasp of an important societal issue. He is brave to be so outspoken and un-wavering in the current societal environment that sets self/sexual-fulfillment as a key measure for "success" in life. As a practicing physician for 22 years, wife of 23 years, and mother to 4 children born over 19 years, being a parent is the hardest, emotionally draining, exhilarating, exhausting, most unappreciated job in the world.I wonder if the almost venomous negative reviewers have given any thought as to who will be caring for them when they are alone in nursing homes or hospitals... if not the secure and caring children raised by stable, loving, and committed parents.

If satirists are at their best when tussling with something they hate, then this is P.J. O'Rourke's masterpiece. He clearly hates government--and has hated it since before it was cool to do so--and for all the right reasons, too: it's clumsy, inefficient, hypocritical, greedy, and arrogant. In other words, it magnifies the faults of the poor saps who staff it. Read more

When I home school my kids, I'll have them read this for Social Studies and Government Today.
Now pj is an avowed republican and though I consider myself a libritarian (however it's spelled) many of the ideas in his book ring true.

YES he takes some easy pot-shots at liberals and YES THIS book is about 15 years old now - but it's funny.

3 stars for effort, but not well-executed
Kernell and Jacobson try to combine historical and rational-choice understandings of American government in this text, but not in a particularly successful manner.The issues of collective action and free rider problems are above the heads of most undergraduates, who care about what actually happens in politics, not what a game-theoretic model in a book thinks should happen.Read more

Understand U.S. Immigration Law through examples.
The most striking thing about this book is the extensive use of examples throughout the book. One of the main problems in understanding the law is trying to figure out how it applies to your particular situation. The use of examples is one of the best ways for an author to explain the various aspects of any law. In this book, the author did such a fantastic job that I have picked up the book at various times in the last decade to figure out how I can solve my own particular immigration problem and I was able to fix it very fast. He does such a great job that I got carried away by the confidence the book inspires and decided to handle one of the more difficult immigration situations myself. It worked out alright but in hindsight, I should have taken the assistance of a lawyer to make things easier for myself. A must read
This is the best book on this subject available. I am a new citizen to this country, and it would have not happened so easily without this great book. Thank you, Mr. Wernick.

Very usefull and well written
This is an excellent book for anyone going through the hurdles of US Immigration. The author covers all bases and still keeps the text easy to read and easy to reference. I have seen Mr. Wernick speak and have read his authoritative newspaper column and this book lives up to his usual high standards.
