5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide I know of
When I was first getting into American politics, I searched far and wide for a general introduction. I was looking for one that wasn't written from an obvious political bias, because I did not want to cloud my thinking. This book fit the bill perfectly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Politics the easy way!
The average American's knowledge of politics is usually what they read in the papers and what they see on television. For most American this is enough, but what if you want more? Where can you turn to find out how oursystem works? The best guide to American Politics may be just the book youneed.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
Flyvbjerg does an excellent job of detailing how authority and power relationships influence the rationality of individuals functioning within and around a particular organization. He does this by exemplifying the art of rationalization as opposed to rational thought in certain contexts.
4-0 out of 5 stars Rationality and Power
It is a must read book for everyone. The way that Flyvbjerg structure his book and the language he use, he make this book suitable for all readers. Importantly, he cleverly and clearly presented the case of rationality andpower in planning, but show the difficultly in striking a balance. So isit, 'Rationality over Power, or Power over Rationality' , this book giveyou an insight that allow readers to look around themselves. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book yet on the fate of welfare
Michael Katz's monograph on the end of AFDC and the rise of market systems as the preferred solution to everything is not the wittiest and most readable book one could have on the subject.Nor is it the most passionate. But it is thoroughly documented and it manifestly shows how the attack on the welfare state in the nineties has increased inequality and decreased security for most Americans.Katz starts off with a fine description of poverty and inequality in the modern American city.He emphasizes, as others have, the very generous government and public support for suburbia at the expense of the inner city, especially in transport and housing.Suburbia's most privileged and coddled residents then turned around to denounce any welfare and assistance to people not like themselves as the most horrendous abuse imaginable of taxpayer funds.More, I think, could have been said about the rise of the conservative ascendency, particularly the weakness of the Democratic Party and trade unions to serve or to mobilize any liberal alternative.5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, an objective book about welfare in the US.
Katz is a historian on welfare in the United States. This book is a history book about welfare. It is a very balanced and objective book, because the author tends to NOT write any of his own opinions, and instead, just uses the opinions of others. This is a good thing for 2 reasons: (1). You aren't as likely to be getting the author's bias meshed in with the writings (2). You get a BETTER historical view of welfare, and the different sides. 1-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Assumptions (And Mr. Luciano is Crazy)
...I read every...word (including end notes) and it was one of the most boring things I've ever done.I should be praised for that.I encourage anyone to read the book and see for yourself. It's a liberal apologetics book about welfare... Again, read the book and you'll see.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Half of a dissapointment
I had a high level of interest upon picking up this book, as cyborg technology and the philosophy behind it, after reading it; however, I have to say I was a bit disappointed.I gave it a rating of 3 stars, but I think it deserves more along the lines of a 2.5.This book professes to be about cyborgs, and it is, but Gray's definition of "cyborg" is so incredibly broad that it loses a huge part of its relevancy. He defines a cyborg as "a self-regulating organism that combines the natural and artificial into one system," and takes that as far as it can possibly go, calling unborn fetuses cyborgs if they are viewed by ultrasound, and the average citizen a cyborg for having immunizations.I am a cyborg because I wear glasses.
5-0 out of 5 stars A man with a vision
Not only does his book have a dazzling perspective into all the ways that the body is modified within modern practice he also brings it to a level that even the most novice of readers can grasp.Having been a philosophy student of Mr. Gray's in 1997 I must say it is not quite as enlightening as being in person with him, but it still shows his brilliance and true connection to the cyborg-mentality.Frankly if you can find a way to meet him, every second is worth it.But if you can't, this book is a good close second, and well worth your $ and reading time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intriguing survey of changing images of civil rights
In Cyborg Citizen, the author argues that the creation of cyborgs calls for new definitions of citizenship. Examples can include Internet offerings and the legal and political issues raised by its use, and issues affecting the mechanization of humans with artificial parts. An intriguing survey of changing images of civil rights and liberties. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Badly Written Text
This was the assigned textbook for a local university course on American government and politics. I ended up dropping the course largely because of this textbook. It is written a much lower than university level and seems biased towards conservative viewpoints (maybe the non-Texas edition is less slanted). In the first chapter (fourth paragraph) I learned the following:

Editorial Review

It's somewhat rare to see an entire grassroots political organization listed as the author of a book but it's perfectly in keeping with the spirit of both MoveOn.org and this handbook on civic activism authored by some of the group's members. It features 50 short chapters (one or two pages each in most cases) authored by non-celebrities from all walks of life who took it upon themselves to change the world. Some of the ideas are ambitious, as in the case of a liberal-minded Texan who decided the best way to make his views known was to run against Republican stalwart Tom DeLay in the GOP primary. Others are much simpler: write a letter to the editor, sign a petition, or go to a rally. But even in those seemingly obvious tactics, there are interesting techniques offered that could make a simple act a much more effective one. Included in each tip are bullet-pointed tips from MoveOn organizers to help the reader translate the idea into real action. While MoveOn is certainly not the first group to suggest simple steps to change the world, this volume scores points for it's concise editing and populist authorship. It's not a book to curl up with in front of the fire, it's meant to be thrown into a backpack or purse on the way to the next protest, campaign rally, or discussion group. The slant, like the organization itself, is a liberal one but the writers generally stop short of expanding on their political beliefs, choosing instead to focus on what those beliefs inspired them to do with their time and energy. Brief interstitial essays by notables such as Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi introduce sections of the book, providing expert gravity without detracting from the common person message. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Disregard the one star reviews
The reason I purchased this book was because of the 1 star reviews. I felt that the majority of them were simply efforts at anonymously posting their mad dog patriotic views. And I was right.
4-0 out of 5 stars Almost there.
Yes, it has its partisan leanings but at least this book provides a less harmful way to be truly patriotic unlike what the rightwingers continuously preach. The only problem I have with the book is getting the Democratic party to truly unite. Even today, there are major rifts between the centrists and liberals in the Democratic Party whereas the conservatives and libertarians in the Republican Party stick together like soldiers in an army even if it's all about merely rubber stamping. I see moveon.org is starting to catch up to that understanding in the recent times compared to the time they released this book way before the election. I guess at that time, it was all about "Anybody But Bush" strategy which failed mainly because of the failure to resolve the major divisions and infighting between the centrists and liberals in the Democratic Party long before election day. While I like this book because it helps you think with assertivity and true patriotism, there's still room for growth.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm conservative and I approve of this book
Well, let's put it this way. I used to appreciate the conservative movement but after the way the religious fascists along with the rotten economic libertarians , who wanted to take away our safety nets that our parents and grandparents had but we and our children will suffer without, formed unlikely alliances in corrupting conservatism by cashing in on political correctness to achieve the worst on laizze faire, I finally decided that it was time to move on. While like most residents in my area of Rankin, MS , I was originally hostile against the organization, I finally decided to read their book and I must say they're not so bad. Sure, they're not perfect but it sure as hell is better than the current rightwing government and forces that are destroying people's lives day after day. And since I am a true pro-lifer not the Delay/Robertson fake type, I strongly recommend everyone to give this book a look and take back America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives great insight to American government
I was amazed at how interesting this book was.I used it for a class I was taking, and I had many preconceived notions that I would not like the class.I was very surprised that everything was so interesting. The author has gathered all of the latest information that was available during the publication of the book, and intergrates the ideas and concepts very well. The book gives you information that a normal person of the "general public" would not have known.I found that every chapter had something to learn that benefited me and that everything in this book applied to me as an American.Great text for my online class; I'm glad we used this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to American Politics Textbook
Excellent intro to politics text. I highly recommend it for a classroom or for anyone really who wants to sit down with a plain-spoken piece to get you to understand our government. Whether it is for someone with little knowledge as to who this vast bureaucracy works, or for someone with a fairly good knowledge of it all - I don't think it will disappoint. 4-0 out of 5 stars I love their attitude,I want to read it in English!

The issue of "charitable choice" and faith-based organizations' eligibility for federal funding for social service programs is a very important topic of discussion in nonprofit and governmental circles, as well as among the general public. This book is a collection of essays from some of the leading thinkers in the field on these issues and others related to religion and public policy in America.
