5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
This book is intresting because Flores was not an orginal member of the party, like some many of the biographies by former Panthers, he joined when they were already underway. He provied insight to the Panthers of the early to late 70s and what happened to the party during those years. He is honest and looks back at the actions with incredible thought and emotion which makes an excellent read and a great piece of Panther history. ... Take out the fluff and chicken-little-the-sky-is-falling nonsense, and the meat of this book would make up a small pamphlet. There are many more informative authors on the subject of personal privacy."The Privacy Rights Handbook" is a much better start.

This book is merely a sample of Dr. King and his words of wisdom.Originally penned in 1964, it expresses King's views on pacifism and why the time was right for the civil rights movement.King proves to be a gifted writer as he use metaphors and concrete examples to state his case.It only leaves reader to wonder how Dr. King would feel if he were alive today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, hugely informative
David Gutierrez' book is one of the most informative, thorough books available on the Chicano experince in the US Southwest. This book is not just for activists or chicano studies scholars. If you have ever wondered why immigration policy exists in its present form, or why racial tensions still persist within the southwest, read this book.It is very densly packed with valuable infomation and excellent sources, and it presents such information in a fairly unbiased manner. This is an impressive work of research that should be in the library of every house in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books in Chicano history
This book truly marks a turning point in Chicano history by interrogating the similarities and differences between Mexican nationals and Mexican Americans in the U.S.The metaphor of Walls and Mirrors sums up the relationship between immigrants and longtime U.S. residents:they shared cultural, labor/class, and daily social ties, but political and civic goals divided them.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book by David Gutirrez

5-0 out of 5 stars What the heck does Iron Maiden have to do with this book?
A wonderfully funny thing happened to me the other day, and never one to believe in coincidence, I thought I would share it.I just finished reading this wonderful book, "Spychips" by Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre, the day before. In the last chapter, they coalesce some of the spiritual/religious/ethical issues surrounding RFID.As expected, they mention the passage in the Book of Revelations (ch. 13, v. 16-18) about the Mark of the Beast. That very next day, a knock on my screen door presented me with two Christian "students" hoping to get "scholarships" by selling religious books and magazines - quite a few of the lovely tomes, of course, delved into the Revelations and the so-called End Times. The kids were very nice about it all, and I politely declined their request. It wasn't until I walked away and started to do other things in the kitchen that I realized I had answered the door in one of my many Iron Maiden concert shirts, with Eddie (their mutant beast mascot) staring right back at them.(For those of you unfamiliar with the greatest band in the world, they have an album (and song) by the name "The Number of the Beast").
5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping and Frightening, This Book will Change Your Outlook!
Although I'm reasonably well informed when it comes to privacy issues, I'll have to admit that this book shocked me out of my complacency.I've always been a little leery about things like Speedpass and other RFID instant pay systems, but when I read the quotations in this book from patent applications, public forums and company press releases it became obvious that while RFID technology could have some benefits, the potential for abuse is simply too great.
3-0 out of 5 stars An Example of Where Technology is Going
I bought this book from Amazon based on reviews.I had heard of it through a mailing I received. It is obvious the authors both spent a lot of time and research and have untold passion to get this material into the hands of the public. The book is a current and informative tour through the marketplace detailing efforts of RFID (radio transmitters placed secretly in merchandise you buy among other places to spy on you, some transmitters half the size of a grain of sand). I have already seen similar evidence of their findings in the local supermarket (and I live in a small town). It is essentially a 200 plus page warning (with examples) to consumers with documentation sprinkled along the way.It does improve as it goes along, saving the most sensational for the last third of the book. My second reading of the book was more convincing that it is a necessary read for anyone interested in where technology is going.I would recommend it as an introduction to the subject, and it does include the website of the writers to keep up to date. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Passionate Argument Against Colonialism
This was a required text for a class I took this past semester, Introduction to African Studies. The author, Aime Cesaire, is known in Africa and France for his moving poetry, but he was also a politician. Born and raised in Martinique, a Caribbean island that was then a colony of France and is now a "departement", Cesaire studied in Paris on a scholarship. While he was there, he met Sedar Senghor and Leon Damas, and together they founded the Negritude movement, which rejected French colonialism in favor of a transnational black identity. After World War II, Cesaire was elected to the French National Assembly to represent Martinique, as a member of the French Communist Party. But he eventually became disillusioned, both with the Communist Party's lack of effort to address race issues and with the idea that Martinique continued on as a French colony. It was around this time, in 1955, that he published Discourse on Colonialism. This is Cesaire's attempt to describe the far-reaching impact colonialism has on both the oppressor and the oppressed. He also stresses the idea of one black identity, encompassing the peoples of Africa, African Americans in the United States, and those that live in the Caribbean. Cesaire's writing is very strong and passionate, and what I thought was most interesting about his arguments is that he uses the very words of notable European writers and philosophers to demonstrate how the colonizers' efforts often resulted in barbarization rather than civilization. It is very easy to see why this book had such a great impact on the pan-African and civil rights movements in America. Five stars for both writing and enjoyment.

5-0 out of 5 stars good perception
I read Cesaire's 'discours sur le colonialisme' in one afternoon at a coffe place and it was captivating in how intellectually he wrote, with tinges of attitude in the words. A lot of the things he wrote about I already knew from studying a lot about Africa before and what ethnocentricism vs. ethno relativism means when applying yourself and perceptions of other cultures. This book is as applicable in the 1950's as today, I found that America seems to be the new France and Britain, as far as imperialism goes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insightful Reminiscence
First of all, ignore the typically snide, leftist bitchings from the negative critics. Their responses are entirely predictable, being very thoroughly indoctrinated by their commisars. When you really summarize it all, the contemporary "liberalism" is about nothing more than endorsing legalized drug-abuse, gay marriage, and free welfare for all those societal parasites who just don't feel like working for a living.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unless You Were Black, Female, Jewish or Gay
I grew up a straight, white, male Christian in the same area that Liddy grew up in and at the same time.I remember a country in which blacks could not vote in many states, in which women would lose the fewjobs they were allowed to have if they were preganant, in which Jews were excluded from many businesses, schools and social activities and in which gays were confined to the closet.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well written and cogent essays on our culture
With the revelation this week that Mark Felt of the FBI was Woodward's "Deep Throat" during his reporting on the Watergate scandals, G. Gordon Liddy is back in the limelight as one of those deeply involved in that break-in.This book has an appendix that recounts the lawsuits Liddy has faced and used to promote his view of what the break-in was really about. The traditional view is that it was the Nixon campaign's effort to spy on those running the Democrat campaign. The Liddy / "Silent Coup" (a book promoting this view from 1991) view is that it was John Dean trying to protect his then girlfriend by trying to get information linking her to a call-girl ring the DNC used to entertain.

The book studies the Internet for peace and war. Mostly about peacetime activities. Like encouraging a greater youth participation in civic matters in the US. The early prospects are positive. The massive uptake of the Internet by the young, on a constant daily basis, offers rewards to political parties that can tap into this behaviour.

Like the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the civil rights movement has achieved mythical status in America--an epic tale of heroes and martyrs; of sacrifice, honor, and courage in the face of overwhelming odds; of ideals worth dying for in a time and place where death was an all-too-real possibility. 5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing work
David Halberstam has written so many great works, but THE CHILDREN may be his greatest achievement. From the outset, this book takes readers on a journey through the civil rights movement through the eyes of both the courageous young people who had decided that our society had to change and the adults who helped them to bring this needed change to America. The book captures readers from the beginning as Halberstam gives a very intimate look at the fear Diane Nash experienced as one of the leaders of Nashville's sit-in movement. The first chapter gives readers a window through which to see the conflicting forces that collided in the heart and mind of Ms. Nash as she contemplated the enormity of what she was doing: changing the south against the wishes of many who, if they had their way, would just as soon hang her as look at her.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Audio Book!
This takes you through the civil rights movement. It is very interesting and proves to be an inspiring historical journey. This is a great audio book. The reader was exceptional.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast Pace Read
David Halberstam's publication "The Children" is an exciting overview of the Civil Rights Movement from an enamored journalist through the eyes of Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. (SNCC)The author focuses on the major players such as Diane Nash, James Bevel, Jim Lewis, Curtis Murphy, Bernard Lafayette and James Lawson, with heavy emphasis on the Nashville Sit-In Movement and Freedom Rides. The strength of his work is that it reads much more like a fast paced novel than an academic analysis. He does however at the same time provide plenty of background material and socio-economic, political and cultural variables within his work.Halberstam also revisits these former SNCC workers after the "high" of the movement and even much later in life. It's quite obvious the work of a journalist within the pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of scholarship, dense but very extremely well done
I can not say if this is the best book on the subject, because I have not read the other books.I can say that this book is absolutely magnificient scholarship. Its subject is the Irish in America, and it gives a masterful presentation of the history of these people, both in Ireland and in America. This book is not a light read.It is very dense, and rather long. For readers with a serious interest in the subject, however, it is very rewarding to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars How So Many Irish Became American
Emigrants and Exiles:Ireland and the Irish Exodus to North America is a well documented history of the emigration of more than seven million Irish people who left Eire for North America in five time periods from pre-Revolutionary days to 1921.Author Kerby Miller's research included more than 750 sources in both public and privately held collections in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Canada, 20 U.S. states and the District of Columbia as well as more than 5,000 emigrants' letters, memoirs, poems, songs and folklore.5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty thorough look at the Irish Diaspora

Editorial Review

John Lewis is an authentic American hero, a modest man from the most humble of beginnings who left a rural Alabama cotton farm 40 years ago and strode into the forefront of the civil rights movement. One of the young people who brought the teachings of Ghandi and King to the lunch counters of Nashville in 1960, Lewis suffered taunts and threats, beatings and arrests. He spoke at the historic 1963 March on Washington and became chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The nation, tuned to the nightly news, watched in horror as state troopers clubbed him viciously, fracturing his skull as he led a march in Selma, Alabama, in 1965. Today, he's the only member of Congress who can be proud of having been carried off to jail more than 40 times. With the help of a collaborator, journalist Michael D'Orso, this remarkable man has written a truly remarkable book. Read more

This was a required book for a class I'm taking on Religion and the Civil Rights Movement and this book has brought me to tears more than once. It's so beautifully written, with words that you can really feel coming from John Lewis. So many books feel like the children of editors more than writers, but this doesn't have that same feeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars The author IS the prize.
Carol's book is an excellent insight into how the struggle for human rights was hampered by the motives of so many players who ultimately brought the force of human rights in the United Nations from a roar to a soft meow. Her voice is fresh and very well informed. I will also admit to a personal bias because I heard Carol speak at the Truman Presidential Library in July of 2006 and it was the passion of her presentation that brought me to read her book. In my opinion, her writing is a close second to seeing her speak in person and I am thankful for having hadsuch a privelege. I look forward to reading her next books and being her personal groupie- Carol Anderson ROCKS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Race in the U.S. today
This book was incredible for several reasons. As an African American, I struggle to understand why so little has changed in relations between blacks and whites in this country and more importantly, why there seems to be a deeply entrenched systemic barrier to real progress (economic, political, social and cultural) for many African Americans. Eyes off the Prize highlights the enormous difference between struggling for human rights versus concentrating solely on civil rights-I'd never really thought about the fact that those aren't the same struggles.5-0 out of 5 stars The Illusion of Substantive Racial Progress
For the sake of full disclosure, I'm a colleague of Carol Anderson's at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Yet, notwithstanding our friendship, I can objectively state that EYES OFF THE PRIZE is must reading for individuals seeking insights as to why America's racial problems persist. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent.
Don't be put off by those reviewers who say it is the "New School" of writing or there are editing and gramatical errors that detract from this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why hasn't this been made into a movie?
I had to read this book for a class, and unlike other historical works, this one reads like a novel. The background story of Ossian Sweet is so moving that I could picture prominent African-American actors portraying his character and winning Academy Awards. That a director has not made this story into a movie is a shame.I teach American history and I had never heard of this case before, and with leading characters like Clarence Darrow, I found that surprising. This book is well worth reading--it won't disappoint!

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly our last Golden Age
'Waiting' is an ode to the Civil Rights era and it's easily one of the best ever written about this period. It feels like a play, characters come in and out of scenes and each one gets his or her due.Joseph is an excellent writer and reveals a number of things that are generally unknown. Everyone should have this one on their shelves for generations to come. Ignorance is killing Black people.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Dusk 'Til Dawn
Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour has something for everybody. For the casual reader who has a layman's interest in American history it's a very accessible view into an often overlooked yet thrilling part of our national chronicle. For the more serious minded it skillfully presents Black Power as a deliberate, complex and multifaceted movement worthy of considered treatment. Like a good drama the cast of characters includes not only spectacular icons like Malcom X and the Black Panthers but also lesser stars like Kwame Toure (Stokely Carmichael) and a host of obscure yet significant figures in supporting roles. To top it all off, the scenery shifts from Harlem to Havana to Oakland with even more exotic stops in between. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a misguided book!
A lot of people consider this book a classic on social movements, but it provides no new research, offers no concepts original to McAdam, and sets up strawman opponents. Why is it still in print?

5-0 out of 5 stars great analysis
We first used this book in Dr. Skocpol's class in Chicago, & it has become an invaluable resource on how to study social movements.I often refer to it in class--along with other now-classic analyses--and a colleague is using it as required reading this coming Spring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for social movement research
If one is interested in the dynamics of the civil rights movement, then this book is a must read. Also a must read for anyone doing research in the field of social movements and especially if interested in the processes ofcontent coding using annual indices. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Response to Cindy Heilman
In regards to the review by Cindy Heilman below, it is apparent that you missed a major point of this book. When you state that "Neither the disabled, homosexuals, nor adoptees are the target of lynching, Jim Crow laws, fire engine hosing, or vicious police dogs."5-0 out of 5 stars The most influential book you could ever read.
My perception has changed in ways immeasurable in regards to people with disabilities. Now, every single day I am aware of the small and large ways in which those with disabilities are discrimated against by temporarily able-bodied individuals. I am buying several copies to lend and give out, I hope others do the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good introduction to disability politics
This book is written in an easy-to-read style by a journalist who has covered disability issues for many years. It explains how he came to see that disability is a civil rights issue, just like racial or sexual discrimination. And it provides a very interesting history of the American disability movement in particular. ... Read more
