2-0 out of 5 stars "Entire Freedom"
Vincent Harding would have us believe that Lincoln was a white supremacist and did not sincerely beieve in freedom for the slave, and equality. Mr. Harding's book, thus, would deny Lincoln his rightful place in the struggle for freedom and equality thru misrepresentation, contextual ignorance, and selective misinterpretation. Lincoln's claim to being the Great Emancipator lies not just with his Emancipation Proclamation, but also with the 13th Amendment, which he INSISTED on & sheparded through Congress. Those who feel Lincoln was insincere about freedom and equality would do well to read LaWanda Cox's Lincoln and Black Freedom: A Study in Presidential Leadership, Richard Striner's Father Abraham: Lincoln's Relentless Struggle To End Slavery, and Harry Jaffa's Crisis of the House Divided: An Interpretation of the Issues in the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, as well as Allen Guelzo's Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America. Lincoln felt that politics was the art of the possible. His political artistry included an acute knowledge of public opinion(and prejudices), a finely-honed sense of timing, and political discretion. Lincoln never retreated from emancipation once it was decided upon, just as he NEVER affirmed black inferiority to be INHERENT. During his debates with Stephen Douglas he NEVER said that he would never(in future) support equality. He didn't put stock in physical differences. In a well-known private note to himself he mused how anyone could be enslaved if the criterion was to have darker skin, or lesser intellect, because EVERYONE was lighter or darker, or of varing degrees of smartness. He, in Chicago in July 1858, implored people to "discard" all their "quibbling" about supposed inferiority, and unite around the equality of the Declaration of Independence. However, a race-baiting Stephen Douglas forced him to subsequently in those debates down-play the full implications of his anti-slavery position. Again, he was a politician seeking an anti-slavery victory in a racist state. But, during his presidency he supported bills abolishing segregation on horse-drawn streetcars in D.C., for equal pay for black troops, for black witnesses in federal courts, for equal penalties for the same crimes, for the Freedmen's Bureau. He supported education for the freedmen. He had African-Americans picnic on the White House lawn, bowed publicly to a black gentleman in Richmond, welcomed(for the first time) an ambassador from Haiti, and met African-American leaders in the White House for discussions. Any colonization was to be VOLUNTARY and was later dropped, whites and blacks having to "live out of the old relation and into the new." He called for the vote for educated blacks and soldiers[a first step]. John Wilkes Booth was in the audience, and told a companion that that meant "N-- citizenship" and vowed it would be Lincoln's last speech. He was assassinated 3 days later. Frederick Douglass noted Lincoln's "entire freedom from popular prejudice against the colored race."Harding's book, in being untrue to the historical record, misleads readers about this critical figure in the struggle for freedom and equality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone organizing against oppression of any kind
Vincent Harding has introduced to us a well researched and well presented picture of the opposing forces to America's economic system based on slave and cheap labor. He chronicles the parallel between the systems of oppression and the systems of resistance against oppression. The River of resistance will forever run through a society where opportunity is squelched by the formation of inequality.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes an urgent and serious topic head-on
The Color Of Guilt & Innocence: Racial Profiling And Police Practices In America by law enforcement veteran Steve Holbert and attorney Lisa Rose is a highly readable discussion of the all too common practice of racial profiling in America. Discussing data collection and analysis programs used to help determine whether racial profiling takes place, issues of civil liberty, police reaction to accusations, and much more, The Color Of Guilt & Innocence takes an urgent and serious topic head-on without losing itself in excessively confusing terminology or philosophy. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally somebody gets it
I have been a cop for 17 years. I was skeptical of another book on racial profiling that bashes cops. A friend of mine gave me this book to read for training, and i was very surprised that someone finally got it.There is so much about this topic that the public does not know. This book finally gives a cops perspective and tells why, in most cases, cops are not racist.Every person in America racially profiles, and this book explains why. I was fascinated by the in depth discussion in one chapter that explains racism. The book also opened by eyes to the harm the victims suffer at the hands of some cops. I think everyone has something to learn from this book. The book finally sheds some light on data collection and why it will not work. Instead of re-hashing the same old "solutions," the book actually explores some innovative new ideas that should be implemented by law enforcement. Thanks for covering this subject in a whole new light!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible and comprehensive work on this subject
I am an avid reader on the subjects of civil rights and racial profiling. This book, simply put, is incredible. I thought I had a firm opinion on the subject, but after reading this book, I really see that there are two sides to this complicated issue. All is not always what you see. This book covers every possible aspect of this subject, and delves into areas that I have not seen covered before. I had never before considered the side of law enforcement, nor did I understand what was really going on behind the scenes. I also never really viewed this subject outside of the "black and white" issue. The authors reminded me that racial profiling effects every one of us. Now I can more effectively become involved in the fight towards racial justice with a more focused understanding of why racial profiling occurs and what can be done to stop this practice. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Libertarian Honesty, from Cover to Cover
Author and journalist Vin Suprynowicz has something to say about the political climate in the United States. He doesn't like the government's excesses of control, the lying, the manipulation, and the almost complete disregard for the constitution. A strong proponent of individual liberty and personal responsibility, Vin covers many topics in this book that relate to government run amok, all with an inspired fervor and a very Libertarian angle. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ugly Truth
I was originally turned off by the title of the book. However, it had been recomended to me by a friend.I have to say that it turned out to be the most thoughtful, well reasoned, documented accounting of just how far out of control the Federal Government has gotten over the years that I have ever read. The point is driven home over and over again in this book that every Constitutional protection you thought you had can be abused, with no consequences, by the Federal Government.Think the money you worked hard for all you life is yours?Think again.Federal police, with local police support can seize it and any other property they covet with impunity. And the cop that takes it gets to profit in the transaction.Think you have a right to a trial by a jury of your peers?Wrong again.Jury picking has become an art, designed to eliminate anyone who may be sympathetic to your views.Think the Constitutional guarantee in the 2nd amendment means what it says?Well, you are probably breaking one of the 20,000 gun laws already in affect, directed against honest Americans like you and I, and don't even know it.And if you are caught by one of these "Special Militia" ( ATF, DEA, FBI that we were warned against over and over by the founding fathers) you will spend more time in jail than a bank robber.Think you cannot be murdered by the Federal Police without justice being done to the ones who murdered you or your family members? You are living in a dream world. This book should be required reading by every 9th grade civics class in America. But of course, as is pointed out in this book, these "Government Schools" will do everything in its power to ensure that your children will NOT understand the true meaning of our Constitution.5-0 out of 5 stars Libertarian Bible for the 21st cenutry!
While writing from a Libertarian and non-religious perspective, Vin takes us across the gamut of current attitudes and the hopes and aspirations of self-sufficient, liberty minded, and responsible persons everywhere.Vin really nails it as to the virus and bacteria infection that holds this land in an ever tightening grip as it chokes our very lives. What kind of virus is this?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Baldwin is brilliant
Baldwin's reasoning, deduction and ability to convey deeply personal thoughts with such command and authority are part of what make this book of essays so riveting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic American essays
Originally published in 1955 these essays are now considered American classics. Baldwin writes with tremendous pain, humor, and insight into the situation of what was then , 'the Negro' in America. He writes with insight into the situation of the young writer striving to locate himself in relation to Western civilization as a whole-which he feels he can never wholly belong to as he strives to belong to it. He writes most powerfully about the day of the dying of his father, and the birth of his youngest sister. His description of his own family situation, and of his father's life is instructive of the whole history of insult and injury which had long been the lot of the black in America. His estrangement from his father, and yet understanding of the story of his father's suffering is one of the powerful sections of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest American book of essays written in the twentieth century
Baldwin writes with a force and an eloquence that will take your breath away mastery--a powerful preacher on the page. What he has to say about the state of race relations in this country is still relevant today, almost half a century after this book was first published. I consider Baldwin our greatest twentieth-century African American writer and one of the greatest American writers ever. He is courageous, passionate, visionary, and a masterful writer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Race remains our most significant social issue
I read this book hoping to find some ideas about the status of race in post civil rights America.Although I found the book helpful and infomative, I do remain highly concerned that the issues the book addresses seem static. The authors do offer a lot of statistics and concise ideas to help understand the problems concerning race in America.4-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars, against Stephen Thernstrom
Should one send political scientists to do a historian's job? That is the question one has to ask about this book compiled by a consortium of political scientists, in response to the "racial realism" of today's right-centrist consensus. This consensus, argued by such authors as Jim Sleeper, Tamara Jacoby, John McWhorter, The New Republic and the renowned historians of American immigration Stephen and Abigail Thernstrom, argue that racism is not really a problem in American life.To the extent that African-Americans are disadvantaged it is because of their own failings or, somewhat more tactfully, the failings of the black politicians and the guilty liberals they (overwhelmingly) support.5-0 out of 5 stars Informative & Thought-Provoking
It presents information in such a way that you are at the very least, forced to consider what they've presented. As a self-identified "African-American" who considers himself a conservative, I think this book does a great job of presenting the foundation of how the problem of race still exists and presents pragmatic ideas - however controversial - that are far better, in my view, than maintaining the status quo.Read more

Freedom, Eric Foner writes, is "the oldest of clichés and the most modern of aspirations." But what does it mean to be free? For the people of the United States, the concept of "freedom"--and its counterpart, "liberty"--have had widely differing meanings over the centuries. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Eric Foner's title - The Story of American Freedom - is well chosen. The word freedom is so central to our national creed and discourse that it is seldom examined closely.Freedom for who?Freedom for what?Freedom from what?5-0 out of 5 stars A absolute must read for every American
As Americans we have a tendancy to think of this country as the birthplace of freedom and enlightenment, that is just came to us naturally from the very beginning. Well, think again. We have not only thwarted freedom for women, minorities, immigrants and others, but our struggle for freedom has been long and is not over yet. 5-0 out of 5 stars American history as it should be told.
The author has chosen a topic - "freedom" - that has been prominent in discourse both public (political) and private (personal lives). In short, the topic - however variously defined, in specific historical contexts - is vital to our public and private lives. He deals with the material beautifully; I cannot say enough in his favor. The material is especially timely as we are being deluged (once again) with politically motivated, manipulative uses of "freedom" and "liberty".Read the book.I read a library copy, then bought three copies - one to keep, others for family members. One final note, a teaser:he makes a good case that our U.S. culture has elevated MATERIAL CONSUMPTION way up, perhaps to the very top of what is now seen as American "freedom."And this has not necessarily been voluntary; rather, many of what we might think of as more traditional and meaningful freedoms are no longer available, at least to folks lacking the $$$$ to buy consideration by political/corporate leaders. The best that many people can hope for is the attention of a salesperson in a store. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Street-level Bureaucrats as Policy Makers
In this book, Lipsky examines the critical role of street-level bureaucrats in the policy-making and/or policy implementation process. The traditional model of public policy theory assumes that policy choices are made by the elected political executives and the implementation of those choices are left to the jurisdiction of bureaucrats. Lipsky challenges this line of argument/belief on the basis that since street level bureaucrats have a wide area of "discretion" when they perform their jobs they must be seen as the persons who actually make the policy choices rather than only implement those choices. 4-0 out of 5 stars Street-Level Bureaucracy
The book "Street-Level Bureaucracy" describes the process whereby lower ranking employees of human service agencies utilize some level of discretion to determine actual public policy. Lipsky calls such workers "street level bureaucrats" and defines them as "those who directly interact with the public and have substantial discretion in the execution of their work" (Lipsky, pp. 3).They would include teachers, police officers, social workers, judges, public interest lawyers, unemployment counselors, and some health workers.Lipsky argues that these relatively low-level employees ought to be viewed as policy makers, rather than implementers of policy. As Lipsky puts it, the "decisions of street level bureaucrats, the routines they establish, and the devices they invent to cope with pressure, effectively become the public policy they carry out" (ibid., pp. xii). The quality of street-level bureaucracy-as operationalized below-is thus dependent upon the somewhat complicated interplay of eleven general factors. The (simplified) causal chain consequently looks something like this: (not available here) 1. Level of employee Discretion 2. Resources for Resistance 3. Budgetary Resources 4. Agency Goals 5. Personal (employee) Goals 6. Measurement Criterion 7. Relationship to Clients 8. Editorial Review

When Larry Elder talks, sparks fly, and he likes it that way. Fans of the radio talk-show host from Los Angeles, who call themselves Elderados, have dubbed him "the sage from South Central." His critics--and there are many--use names that range from Oreo to the Antichrist. What's it all about? Elder, a libertarian, lays down his controversial views in his first book, which attacks the politically correct, black leaders, feminists, gun-control advocates, and other "so-called liberals." Some of the 10 things you can't say in America include "Blacks are more racist than whites," "There's only a dime's worth of difference between Republicans and Democrats," "The media bias is real, widespread and destructive," and "America's greatest problem is illegitimacy." Elder aims to change the way blacks look at their future, demanding that they take responsibility for their lives, stop blaming all their problems on racism, and pay attention to the progress they've made. While there may be some truth in what he says and even some good news (for instance, the self-esteem of black children is equal to or better than that of whites), this isn't exactly a pep talk. Not surprisingly, his all-out attack on black leaders (whom he calls nutcases and hysterical) and white liberals has engendered a fair amount of hostility. With this kind of dialogue, it's hard to believe Elder's going to win too many converts. But for those who appreciate his views, or are curious about them, this book is a provocative and lively ride into the mind of one of the nation's most outspoken black libertarians. Read more

...I'm giving this a 1 star because Elder is simply not a Libertarian. He should stop masquerading because most of us Libertarians don't subscribe to most of his far-right rantings. Larry, for someone who is so focused on proving yourself to black America, you still haven't had the guts to refer to yourself as a black Conservative

5-0 out of 5 stars Larry Elder is the REAL DEAL
I am coming in late on Mr. Elder's thoughts regarding America, but after reading this book, most ALL of what he has to say...I've already thought about at one point or another.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must read!
I really enjoyed this book!Through his use of facts and statistics Larry Elder is able to paint a very true picture of life in contemporary America. His writing style is full of wit and humor and it makes the book a joy to read.At the end of the book Mr. Elder puts a list of all the sources of where he got the statistics from, which makes his facts irreputable. This book has really changed the way I look at America.I have also grown to respect Mr. Elder becasue of his backround and the issues he discussd in the book ie. blacks are more racist than whites, white condesention is more harmful than white racsim, democrats and republicans are the same beast just different rhetoric.I hope more of America reads this book. This book would really open up the minds of all narrow-minded people living in this country.A VERY ENJOYABLE READ. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Neo-Nazi/Revisionist Material
At all costs - avoid this book. It is not the fair, well-written analysis of a RashidKhalidi, Edward Said, or Vali Nasr. I am so embarassed that I purchased this book on a whim without doing proper research. Coming from someone whom profoundly disagrees with the Zionist movement and the 'Terrorist'-like behavior of Israel, this book is poorly-written, anti-Semitic, and nothing short of propoganda for Neo-Nazis and disillusioned revisionists.

3-0 out of 5 stars [Three out of Four] Another very good Hoffman Revisionist essay-style book, but some minor errors...
While Hoffman is correct to indict Zionist-
1-0 out of 5 stars Lies...lies...and more lies.
This title is filled to the brim with propaganda and lies. The Israelis are simply doing what they need to to survive. In 1967, they struck before Egypt had a chance and the Arab powers were obliterated. In 1973 Egypt struck back, in an effort to gain their territory they had previously lost. But at the core of this conflict, and what preceded it, was the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, when as soon as Israel gained independence, she was attacked ferociously by a horde of greedy Arabs. Israel repulsed them in less than a year, but the battle rages on and she is repeatedly and unprovokingly attacked (guerilla warfare and full blown battle) by the Palestinians. It doesn't seem you can convince this to the author. All that Israel has done has been in response to terrorism. Israel even gave up land (virtually all of the West Bank and Gaza Strip) and the Palestinians are simply not appeased.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book
This is a pretty good book for people concerned about possible deterioration of American civil liberties in the event of further successful 9/11-type attacks. It is almost impossible to amend the U.S. Constitution. So Ackerman proposes laws that could be enacted by Congress and states that would help do this. It should be read in conjunction with Richard Posner's Catastrophe, which makes a case for some curtailment of civil liberties, given the dangers of the age we live in.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Yale professor impressed with himself
This book spews the progressive line that judges should make laws and run the country.By proposing that war powers be taken over by a group of congress and ruled over by judges, he proposes that we all give up our right to vote and express ourselves to an unelected and unfireable federal judge.More of the same "we know better than you" pablum spewed by the socialist/communist/nambla movement. What is even sadder is that he is a professor of law and influences young minds in this capacity.Save your money. Why pay to read "I am smart and you are not".If so bright why has he never been able to get a real job in the private sector without the cushion of tenure.Buy a latte instead, more satisfying. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Exposition and Accuracy
As a participant,I can vouch for all material that related to my experiences as a Freedom Rider in the book. The writing accurately descibes the atmosphere and conditions of my experiences in Jackson City Jail and Parchman Prison Farm's maximum security unit.I was amazed by the fidelity of the narrative,it was like being transfered back in time! The short but excellent telling of the Monroe Freedom Rider Project with Robert Williams in North Carolina was enlightning for me as a participant because of the dramatic events of that disastorous Sunday.I was one of five riders not on the picket line and never heard of the experiences of those arrested downtown.I cannot recommend this book more highly for anyone interested in the civil rights movement. It should be read by anyone who is politically active in order to understand the complexity of social movements and the responsibilty of the participant to their cause and the people they are attempting to help.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Historical-Action Masterpiece
This is an unqualified masterpiece treatment of an epic civil rights story. Fascinating characters, superb storytelling and a brilliant historian's perspective create a book that will amaze and move you. I read the whole thing in a mountain cabin on a vacation in New Zealand, and have rarely felt so proud to be an American. It is a story of pure guts and glory. Prepare yourself to be absouletly blown away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essays of the master moral philosopher of political liberty
Henry Hardy the devoted student and editor of the work of Isaiah Berlin has reedited and expanded Berlin's on Liberty. These essays are at the heart of Berlin's liberal political philsophy. And their most well- known conception is the distinction between 'negative and positive liberty'.
