A decent memoir revolving around the restoration of a Porsche
What you've got here is a very readable account of the adventures (and misadventures) in the life of a mechanically-inclined, aging hippie who rebuilds a Porsche 911 in his barn in New York.The book splits its time pretty evenly between stories about rebuilding the car and stories about other parts of Wilkinson's life.
Wilkinson - A wild & crazy genius
The book is extraordinary, and probably will have Oprah and Larry King out in their garages trying to rebuild something, but much of the fun is discovering Stephan himself. I met him when he gave me a lift from Orlando to NYC in Flying Magazine's twin Cessna. A giant storm was moving in as we were cleared for takeoff; I assumed we would wait. Steve gunned it right into the worst of the turmoil. I think I passed out. Polite, erudite, marvelously funny, he has written a gem. Buy, read and enjoy it.

One of those books which youhope never ends

Save Your Money
The cover states that there are forwards written by Dick Brannan, Arnie Beswick and Hayden Proffitt. My copy contained no forwards of any kind. Actual facts and research are words that can only be used loosely to describe this book. Most of it reads like a compilation of material pulled together from previously published sources, and written poorly. I was anticipating this book, but once I knew who the authors were (read some reviews on their other titles), my expectations were lowered accordingly. I am a factory lightweight fan, but can't recommend this book for even a novice who is interested them. Wait until it's in a bargain bin if you have to have it.

Buyer Beware
Buyer Beware! I waited 2 months for this and it's not the same book represented in the picture. The book I received is entitled "Extreme Muscle Cars: The Factory Lightweight Legacy" and the cover shows a 60's Plymouth dubbed "Honkin' Hemi". It's mostly "lightweight" drag cars. An Excellent Gift for Any Formula One Fan
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this golden age of Formula One racing. It would also make an excellent gift for the F1 enthusiast. The photos are spectacular and Daley's writing is evocative; reading the book really brings you back to the late-50s/early-60s of Formula One. I wasn't even alive at the time, yet reading the book made me feel as if I was reliving these years.

When even the spectators were brave
A fascinating snapshot of a bygone age, most of "Cruel Sport" is Robert Daley's poetic accounts of 1950s and 60s Grand Prix racing, actually captions to his incredible photos.
A (Slightly) Revised Re-issue of an Auto Racing Classic

Valuable Collectors Guide For early Series
If you are a Matchbox regular wheels collector, 1953 - 1969 series, then this is the book for you. Very clear pictures of both model and box variations from the early Lesney period. While a number of the very rare MB variations aren't present which is a shame e.g. red version of model 45 - A Vauxhall Victor (photo recently on eBay auction), this doesn't detract from its usefulness as an overall guide, hence the four star rating. Book was printed in 2001 so its price listing value is a little bit dated but this is due only to the passage of time which is to be expected - e.g. model 33 - C - 1 shown as being US$400 - $650 in this book but in his own Encyclopedia edition (2002) the same model variation is shown as shown as being US$250 - $300. Just proves that as a collector you need a good range of MB guide books to help you and a little bit of wisdom & experience. ... Read more

Although I bought and read nearly all of Motorbooks on modern fire apparatus, I didn't read this book completely for reasons the previous review stated. If you like details....
This is the book for the true fire engine/pumper enthusiast.It provides a level of detail that far exceeds other books on the subject.Shapiro looks at each make/model of pumper and explains all the variations.The photos are execellent.The "uncommitted" might be turned off by all the information packed into this book. ... Allis-Chalmers Tractors
I was a bit disappointed in this book.It would seem that these guys had an old A-C day on a farm, then got a camera and decided to take pictures and make a book.There are alot of colorful pictures of reconditioned tractors, but I was looking for a more data based and historical account of A-C.

A pale imitation
This book looks superficially like the Standard Catalog books dealing with American cars, but the data is incomplete and the editing is grossly inferior.Just a few of the problems I noticed flipping through a few sections: Lots of information on lots of cars
A remarkable effort to list all the cars imported to the US, and their specifications.For many cars they have total production, instead of US or North American imports, but they try to organize their information.Some good B/W pictures, and short histories of the marques.A numbers book, with a poorly defined pricing guide, not a picture book. ... An Excellent Diagnostic Guidebook
This book is not a repair manual. It is a compendium of common problems and their solutions for MGB owners. It is really well written guidebook helping one to figure out what is causing that rattle, knock or whine somewhere on the MGB. There is a mountain of useful advice and diagnosis, but don't expect this book to tell you how to fix the problem step by step. For that you need a workshop manual, but on the other hand, a workshop manual will not help you very much to find the problem. That is why this book is a gem and a must buy for any non-expert MGB owner/mechanic. I can't wait for more books in this series to be published for other vintage British sports cars.

Chevy buying Bible
No matter what year make model of truck(s) you are looking at if your thinking Chevy youve come to the right place or should I say book. Comprehensive, accurate, beautiful... a fun read as well!
Adler has done it again with a sumptious book showing the true evolution of the marque. Original photogaphy of very rare cars is complimented by museum archive shots, most of which I've never seen elsewhere. What amazed me was the 1930's poster art as well... Stuttgart clearly gave him total access!
Another Disappointment
After being disappointed by Adler's Duesenberg book, I approached this book with some trepidation. In the Duesenberg book,the one redeeming factor was the excellent photos. This book, Mercedes-Benz, not only exhibits worthless and erroneous history and information, the photos are a huge disappointment. Poorly cropped, over or under-developed and poorly printed, this book will become the first automobile title that I will actually return for a refund; it will not find its way onto my bookshelf! ... Wired for Success: Auto Electrical Made Easy
Having made the mistake of purchasing this...this...book, I strongly urge no one else do the same.It contains nothing that can be of use and Randy makes it a point to refer one to the "instructions" and "diagrams" that accompany various wiring products.Luckly I paid little for this waste of a good tree.Therefore I will use it along with kindling to start fires in my fireplace as I curse Randy this winter. I actually rate this book a zero - NO Stars!! Not even fit for the bird's cage!!!

Incomplete Book?
I was extremely disapointed in this book. It has NO buisness with the title it was given. There is an inconsistancy in the way he tells you to polarise the generator/ regulator on the "A" circuit from onepage to the next and he tells you how to update and wire from a generatorto an alternator, but he leaves out where to connect the last (white) wire.Should have been corrected before print.

good book for older cars
