5-0 out of 5 stars Nice tool for new teachers.
This book is a practical resource for new secondary teachers. The authors discuss classroom set-up, student resources, and behavior problems. There are many ideas ready for application in your own classroom and no boring or unnecessary narratives that most classroom management books have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Harry K. Wong Implements Research of Evertson
In his video series "The Effective Teacher" Part II: The First Days of School, Harry Wong cites the work of Carolyn Evertson and how he implements her research in the classroom:Wong says "Now, why do I assign seats? Now, you may know the name Carolyn Evertson. She is arguably the leading authority on classroom management. She did her work at the Univ. of Texas, Austin campus, many years ago. They wrote a book called Classroom Management for Elementary Teachers and a book called Classroom Management for High School and Junior High School Teachers. They went out and they looked at thousands and thousands of very effective teachers, and they went out and they looked at thousands and thousands of very ineffective teachers, and this is what they discovered. They discovered that effective teachers assign seats on the first day of school..."He shows a graphic of the covers of the two books. This is one of the books he refers to.Harry Wong is the author of the book The First Days of School.Anyone who liked The First Days of School, therefore, might be interested to read this resource that Harry Wong found to be useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for busy educators
Having purchased many types of teaching resources over the last few years, I have finally found onemore helpful than all the others combined. Evertson not only outlines the procedures in an easy to read manner, but she also gives excellent examples of her theories in practice. I was expecting a book that strictly dealt with keeping order in the classroom, but what I received was so much more. This book describes ways to teach that will ensure that classrooms run smoothly and more importantly the students learn. I only hope that other new teachers find this text at the beginning of their careers as the advice contained is invaluable. If your budget or time schedule only allows for one book, definitely buy this one!

1-0 out of 5 stars "Poverty" Misunderstood.
Let me start off by mentioning all the positive elements of this work (of which there are not many). In the beginning, the author shares accurate Census figures about poverty along with insight that it is a relative condition which applies to all races and creeds. She also recommends that educators should teach and strengthen rather than praise and condemn. From here, however, the work slips into the abyss. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Start
I work in a large middle school which hit the 50% level of students in poverty a few years ago. The majority of our poverty students are white, while the number of African-American students is less than 5%.The percent of Hispanic students in poverty in our school/community is growing.Ruby Payne's description of students and families in poverty fits our school to a large degree. Our entire corporation has been exposed to her materials, we've had Ruby as a guest presenter and our entire middle school staff has studied her book. We continue to incorporate much of what her materials recommend. We are having good success with this endeavor, and like anything in education, it is a work in progress.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any...
This is a must read for all teachers, pastors, doctors, lawyers, who deal with various social levels and just about anyone else who feels they can't understand why poor people are poor and stay that way generation after generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Good Ideas
Eighth Edition. From beginning to end, this book is loaded with practical techniques for improving classroom behavior. The heart of the book summarizes the discipline approaches of a range of theorists, from pioneering models like Skinner, Kounin, and Dreikers to more sophisticated approaches including the Canters' Assertive Discipline, Glasser's noncoercive discipline, and Curwin and Mendler's Discipline with Dignity. The range of pedagogies corresponds to the diversity of pedagogies, districts, and students.
3-0 out of 5 stars Look Elsewhere for "How-to's"
Building Classroom Discipline is a practical book for a college classroom;however, for the teacher looking for a "how-to" book, there are other books that are better.BCD is wonderful for learning about different theories or studies on discipline, but it doesn't get to the practical stuff until the end of the book. Therefore, if you are looking for a book full of "how-to's", read something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Teachers
This book I believe is excellent for not only beginning teachers but also those teachers who are in a classroom now. It provides an unbiased account of Educational Theorist. The text looks at what each theorist has recommended from his or her own research in managing classroom behaviour. The book provides strategies for teachers to help control and prevent student misbehaviour. The book not only looks at old Theorist such as Dreikus, Kounin, Skinner but new Theorist such as Canter. It is a must for all teachers to read, allowing them to effectively use strategies suggested by the various theorists in their classroom. I have found the suggested strategies helpful in my own Teaching. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What if this is as good as it gets?
First, I should start by saying I'm a 23-year-old teacher who graduated from Penn State University.I've been teaching now for about 5 months.
5-0 out of 5 stars A concise summary of the available research.
There are a number of popular books on classroom management.Indeed, one could argue that there is a flavor for every type of teacher. However, what I most appreciate about Marzano's books is that they are meta-analyses of educational research. This is where my own bias comes in.Having undergone doctoral study in education leads me to prefer reading the research literature; however, I do not have the time to locate and read such a large body of literature. With Marzano's book much of the legwork has already been completed.I can read his concise summary of the literature. Then, for those areas that I desire a greater depth of knowledge, I have his references to delve deeper into the educational research. For my purposes, this makes Marzano's book a great asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Purchase
This book is a great place to start for individuals who already have some teaching experience, have a general familiarity with differentiated learning, but need help with the scope and implementation. This is not for someone who wants linear how-to manual. This book begins with a rationale for differentiated learning and then provides a framework for understanding the process, content, and structure for setting up your classroom. There is plenty of practical advice and examples. If you already know that this is the direction you want to take, I highly recommend this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent choice for learning about differentiation
This would be an excellent resource for all classroom teachers and reading coaches. With much emphasis on differentiating instruction, many teachers are at a loss as to what it really is.This book explains the idea of differentiating instruction in simple easy to read chapters. You will be glad you purchased it and will want to share it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Book
I read this book while researching my topic for my MA thesis in elementary education. This book blew me away. It's provocative, it's funny and it challenges so many of the unnecessarily cruel and transparently manipulatie behaviors we use as teachers on a daily basis. While I agree that the book doesn't offer a paint by the numbers how to guide for implementing a more democratic and community based classroom, the intelligent reader can understand what needs to be done or at least look elsewhere for answers.
2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great questions; few usable answers
In Beyond Discipline:From Compliance to Community, Alfie Kohn presents cogent criticism of the common strategies teachers use to control student behavior:rewards and punishment.Kohn made me question whether I ought to use such tactics, and made me hunger for a better way -- something not involving an insistence on control and compliance.Unfortunately, Beyond Discipline created a hunger without really satisfying it.
4-0 out of 5 stars In response to reviews...
To the reviewer who said Kohn has no experience: He was a teacher for several years.Secondary to be specific. He travels the country observing classrooms. This book was written in response to a)his own experience b)exhaustive research but mostly c)to answer the question of why certain classrooms he observed seemed to have "better" learners than others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Classroom Management
I had to buy and read this book for a classroom management class. It is a great book for comparing the most recent research available. However, you usually need to read five to ten pages of what could have been stated in a paragraph.I do feel that I really understand the material by the time I finish reading the book.I have also used many of the ideas in my classroom to try and improve my classroom management in my student teaching experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars required class reading
I was required to purchase this book for a class I am currently taking. While the content of the book could be useful, the manner in which it is written is laden with ridiculous run-on ideas that could be communicated much more clearly. Here is an example from page 28:

5-0 out of 5 stars Therapeutic and Entertaining
Rubinstein may hope that first year teachers will read his book and not make the mistakes he made, but chances are the readers who pick up his book already have completed their first year. While this book does not give an encyclopedic array of tips like the "First Days of School", it is a funny and reflective treatise on classic first teacher mistakes.I used it as part of my summer "therapy" after a disasterous first year -- it helped me get over being a complete failure and start thinking about how I was going to approach my second year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for new or struggling inner-city secondary teachers
The other books on the subject (and I've read the top seven or so) are all too theoretical, dense, boring, and advocate techniques that simply don't work in an out-of-control secondary class. "First Days of School" is one of the few books that is decent in terms of practicality and readability. However, it is too elementary-focused for secondary teachers. Also, it advocates a standard pattern of incremental steps (writing names on the board with checks and so on).
3-0 out of 5 stars OK
He does not tell you how to make the transformation from reluctant to strong willed.I figured he would have some words of advice or to think of something else when the class is out of control or arguing back............. but he doesnt.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
easy to understand, practical strategies, insightful, reminds us that behavior is the way children communicate when they are frustrated or lack other communicative abilities...

5-0 out of 5 stars Real help in addressing behavioral difficulties in autism
There are several books about behavior problems on the market, but this one deals specifically with the types of problems associated with autism. Besides explaining how to lessen these behavioral problems, this book teaches you to understand the root of the behavior which means you can apply your new found knowledge in endless ways. 5-0 out of 5 stars Behavior Analysis
Linda Hodgdon's book, SOLVING BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS IN AUTISM, works for anybody dealing with another human being. You don't have to be a parent, teacher, or someone working with a special-needs person to see the value in Ms. Hodgdon's approach. People act out for a reason.Linda suggests you look at the circumstances before, during, and after a behavior before trying to deal with it.If you understand the person's motivation, concern, and expectations, you can better change, temper, or redirect the behavior.Added to this insight, Linda points out most special needs people's strengths and weaknesses. Then she clearly and concretely describes techniques using visual tools to help them communicate more effectively.Since most special needs people are visual-spacial learners rather than auditory students, Linda shows how to make, use, and facilitate visual tools, so these people can better understand, and thus, behave in society.Ms. Hodgdon's technique takes the use of visual tools beyond labeling, and she explains how to direct people's communication with visuals, so that they can function as normally as possible in the everyday world. When they understand the concept, they can communicate it, but in order to comprehend the idea, they must see it.Thus, if they can see, they can understand, then they can act accordingly. Linda shows this concept with the logo, WHEN I SEE IT...THEN I UNDERSTAND.Bad behavior may not be intentional, but if people don't understand what they hear or what others expect of them, their inappropriate actions may simply be a reaction rather than a controlled response. So logically, if you understand why people behave inappropriately, you can fix the problem not just react to it.SOLVING BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS IN AUTISM helps readers realize reason works better than reaction when dealing with human behavior especially with special needs people. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good info, but annoying writing style
I had to buy this book to use in a class I'm taking.I find the information in the book to be very complete and packed full of useful information. However, in an effort to lighten the heaviness of the topic, the author resorts to silly interjections and comments that destroy the flow of the text.I found it jarring and annoying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, helpful for K-12 teachers
Popham's work is some of the easiest-to-read, least jargon filled, in the area of designing classroom tests. Chapter by chapter, he takes the reader through the different kinds of test questions, how to write them, how to grade them, how to tell if your students understand what you're asking; then he provides case studies, examples, and lists of further reading.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational!
I happened across this book completely by chance in a bookstore. I was looking for new ideas for my elementary classroom. I remember thinking that the title seemed funny. Once I picked it up though, I was literally hooked (pardon the pun)! I couldn't put it down, and it has inspired a great many new ideas for me to use in the classroom. The advice and examples are so practical and inspiratioal. As a philosophy, it is a perfect fit for the classroom setting. It intends to make school what it should be... a place we all enjoy going and spending time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for the Classroom
I am a classroom teacher. I read this book in a course as part of my Masters in Education program. It has a lot of practical advice for busy classroom teachers. It is easy to read and to apply the ideas into your own classroom.I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars m.casey
I chose this book to read for my education class for the simple reason that I did not know what a differentiated classroom was.I have had ideas for a long time of how I would like to teach, I just never realized there was a name for it.This book explained in detail many examples that could be used in any classroom. This book was very easy to read because it was written in simple terms taken from stories of teachers all around the country.Theonly thing that I did not like was that a lot of the examples were aimed more at teachers who have been practicing for a while. This is definately a book that I will hold on to and refer to throughout my teaching career.

These are(1) an introduction (2)creating a positive classroom environment for all students, (3) functional behavior assessments and behavioral intervention plans, (4) measuring behavioral progress and (5) basic plans.A very brief final words summary concludes the book. This text emphasizes the steady use of scientific approaches to human behaviors noted in each individual student to eventually have a highly personalized plan for each student as a means of integrating the outcomes by enhancing total growth for the entire group into a steady move to enlarge the learning possibilities of each student in an orderly fashion. The specifics of behavioral science and it's application to every learning center is strongly illustrated.Without mentioning it specifically the application of anthropology can be sensed by the wide range of examples.Since each student is moored in a specific home setting this is understandable given the mix of racial, religious and economic settings which make the composition of each class. This demonstrates the insight that can be used to encourage all students to comply by personal adaptation to the goals set for learning achievement. The Authors stress the constant growth of teachers in assessing the differences each student brings to the classroom so that norms for learning can be stimulated equally in all students. The drop in wide ranging differences can be used to stimulate the total learning of all.The examples in the chapter on creating a positive classroom environment are designed to give insight so that teachers rise above a mere mechanical teaching process to one that catalyzes learning for all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable for those dealing with groups of children
If you are involved with children in the education system this book may be what you are looking for.The authors take the reader through creating a measurable Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP)."Why Johnny Doesn't Behave" is not a detailed psychological text on dealing with problem children. It is a primer on dealing with the more common problems through an explanation of how to replace the negative behavior with positive behaviors.Perhaps the most valuable part of the book starts in the third section with detailed explanations of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavioral Intervention Plans. The information includes detailed flowchart analysis of behavior and how to integrate an intervention plan into the flowchart so that the results are clear and measurable.Sections three and four cover these in detail and are an excellent analysis of how to make an assessment and document both the assessment and the intervention plan. With the increasingly litigation against schools, knowing how to document the behavior and intervention that was taken becomes more and more important not only for the child but for the school and educator as well.It is a recommended read for anyone dealing with children in an educational environment.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for instructors using Blackboard
I'm a Blackboard system administrator, so I read this book looking for things that I would like for our faculty members to know.I thought it did a very good job of providing them with basic explanations of features and ideas for using those features.I also enjoyed the paragraphs from instructors who made comments and suggestions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some Corrections
The review by Someone's Mom appears to contain some factual errors. The banner feature is discussed on pages 75 - 76. Creating a learning unit is discussed on pages 98 - 100. Whether these entries would satisfy the previous reviewer is another matter, but the topics are addressed. There may be other errors as well in that review, but these two just jumped out at me. I agree that the authors couldn't seem to decide whether they wanted to write a technical book about Blackboard or a book focused on pedagogy and the use Blackboard. Nevertheless, there is useful content in this book, particularly for someone who is new to the use of course management systems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Handholding for Beginners
This book is well organized and will answer your BASIC Blackboard Questions -- but it certainly will not transform you into a 'power user' as it claims.
