Totally Free Is Even Better
Ben Kaplan's book is great. I recommend it to all my students who are looking for financial help. I also tell my students to run by the possibility of the totally free college, West Point. You can learn about the significance of West Point to America by reading Norman Thomas Remick's, "West Point: Character Leadership Education..".

How to go to College Almost for Free
I bought this for my grandson, he has already written in for several grants, and working on more. This is a great gift for any high school kid, and even kids in college. I don't believe the parents should go into debet for this, the kids will do much better if they have to work for it. I've seen to many parents almost go broke with several kids at college at the same time. They end up with nothing for retirement. Not bad, but...
Overall, this book is one of the better college guides out there - it's well-organized, clean, and very useful for students, parents, and teachers alike, and it's easy to read, and does elicit laughter and chuckles.
Very Good Summaries
I enjoyed browsing this book.My daughter is in the 'what's out there' stage.This book gives a brief, but excellent, overview of the covered colleges.The overview includes key stats and some of the flavor of the schools.I definitely recommend this book as a starting point.

No Sour Grapes Here
If this was written by a Harvard-reject, credibility would be the central issue. This author, however, received his undergraduate and graduate degree from Harvard and is one of the few insiders who is qualified to reveal the secret: Harvard, etal are great institutions because of the kids they get and not what they do for the kids.
Very good, but not my first choice
Harvard Schmarvard is an excellent resource although it is not my favorite book on the college admissions process.The author, Jay Mathews, is funny and insightful, but doesn't always make the best case against brand name schools as his many stories of where students happily ended up include schools which really are pretty well-known powerhouses like Tufts, UCLA, or Columbia.
Life Outside the Ivy League
There certainly is life and there certainly are alternatives outside the Ivy League. You can get an Ivy League level of education plus so much more in the way of building leadership and character for your future life at a college like West Point, a college that, believe it or not, everyone has a good shot at getting into despite its reputation. Awesome reviews on things you'd forgotten along with great tips
I bought this book along with The Real ACT Prep Guide and have found this book to be much more useful. I already understood the basics of the test, but I was looking for something to refresh me on all those little rules I'd forgotten in school. This book did just that. It is a great reviewer, especially in the English and Math sections.
It got me into college
The ACT for Dummies is a great ACT study guide. The Math section totally refreshed me and was very valuable when it came to test time. But what really made the ACT for Dummies book so good was that it was full of really cheesy humor. This humor helped keep me reading a book that would otherwise be extremely dull and positively unbearable. I wouldn't be at the University of Michigan without the ACT for Dummies! Errors
It's fun to read and it's a good prep.Unfortunately, the practice tests contain several errors.So far, I have only taken the english and the math sections of the first test, and I have found three errors.(And this is only on the first two of eight practice sections!)I have the 3rd Edition and these problems might be different in other editions.Feel free to dispute me.Read more

Amazing resource for anyone involved in higher education.
I am lucky enough to go to a school which made the Top 100 and am quoted in the synopsis of my school. As co-president of our Undergraduate Gay-Straight Alliance, I plan to use this book to bring to the administration's attention areas in which the school is lacking and work to improve those areas. The book also has a lotof information for High School students selecting a college, administrators at colleges looking to better support LGBT students, and student leaders looking for help in planning events. If you are at all involved in higher education and want to make your school better for LGBT students, buy this book, read it, and loan it to everyone you know.

The future is now!
This books time had come years ago, and I am SO glad to see that it is finally here. Alas, it's too late for me as a college graduate, but I like to know that future college students will know what to look for when picking a colle or university. Amazing resource for anyone with admissions question
As a high school senior, I've been having the usual problems with finding a college that I feel is right for me, and then actually going about the process of applying. Not only was this book helpful in answering nearly all of my questions, but it is written in an interesting, friendly manner that I found heartening in the midst of a process that has been incredibley stressful! I recommend this book not only to high school students but their parents as well - my Mother read it and she loved it too!

He walks his talk
Having been in one of Brookfield's workshops I must I think this book captures a lot of what he is about.There are lots of teacher educators out there who write about how important it is to be reflective, or to think critically, without it ever showing in their work.This is something I'm frankly OD'd in in staff developments I've had to go through.But Stephen truly walks his talk.Everything I like about this book I found in his workshop.
An egregious farrago of nonsense and vacuity.
I shudder to think that this book is being used for teacher training. There is no content. In a sense, the title belabors the obvious: who, after all, does not reflect? A physician, a car mechanic, and a refrigerator repairman all reflect on their craft, and all are problem-solvers in the context of their activity. What, then, does this book say that applies to teachers specifically? Absolutely nothing. The discussion (I use the term loosely) is couched in such broad generalities as to be meaningless. For example,take a section heading such as "Critical Reflection as the Illumination of Power" -- how can this possibly shed light on thinking? The book is replete with such hollow chapter and section titles. An instant classic in adult education.
Brookfield has done it again. An instant classic in adult education.In accessible language and with an uncanny ability to relate humorous and telling anecdotes, Brookfield provides the best available overview of reflective teaching, especially with adults.His notion that we learn to become reflective teachers through the four key lenses of self, students, colleagues, and theory is an important contribution.But what he does to explain how we learn through these four lenses is revealing and insightful.A good read.A lasting contribution. ...
