5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Resource
I'm starting my senior year of undergrad and I've been making huge efforts to try to find a grad school program with a professor with similar research interests. Thus far, it's been very labor-intensive.However, I just bought this guide and it's incredibly helpful. Not only does it go through the process of how to apply, have a successful interview, etc, but it also breaks down schools by program.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource but same as previous edition
Yep, I wasted $15 on this. If you haven't got a previous edition, then this is an OUTSTANDING resource for those interested in pursuing clinical psyc in grad school. If you do have a previous edition, do not buy - especially if you have the 2004-2005 edition. There is nothing substantially different as far as I can tell. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I got into my first choice program with this
In the fall of 2003, I applied to 7 top PhD programs in my field (in the sciences), including the 5 best.Although I had graduated from the top Ivy League university, I had worked for 5 years and wasn't sure how I'd present myself to the graduate programs.I had reasonably good GRE scores, but all of my recommendations were from industry, so I needed to massage my personal statement to reflect strong industrial experience.
4-0 out of 5 stars To someone who wants to apply graduate school
Summarize the important information from graduate school! To student who wants to apply graduate school, especially for non english speaking students. Author has good sense of humor. He also gives us key points in applying schools and how the schools cope with different students' application.

5-0 out of 5 stars Huge help in writing law school personal statement
I found this publication extremely helpful. It was recommended to me by a PhD candidate who had to write multiple essays for admissions applications. There are all kinds of examples of essays and what admissions committees liked and did not like. I found it essential in thinking about and starting my personal statement. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book with lots of practical tidbits
This seems to be a good book for begining college instructors looking for the classroom basics plus some ideas on how to modify some basic formulas to make it a bit more interesting. It manages to keep from getting too bogged down with details about specific strategies.Unfortunately, this is also it's weakness, as I did not find support readily available when I wished to know more about a specific strategy.Worth having as a basic reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK for teaching children - Not for teaching adults
This book is written with the assumption that you will be teaching young people in college or below(pedagogy). It is great for that.If you want to get it to learn techniques for teaching adults in the workplace(andragogy), look for another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Teaching Tools
Regardless of the year in which this book was released, rest assured in knowing that it does provide VERY useful and timeless teaching techniques. I appreciate Dr. Gross Davis' efforts a great deal. 1-0 out of 5 stars How is this Helpful?
This is one of the worst college resources out of the hundreds already in print. The book does little more than list the general statistics of the thousands of colleges in the United States, making it the size of a phone book. The text offers little insight into the character of the school and leaves a college bound student even more confused than before. All this information and more can be found at the collegeboard website(for free), where it is much easier to navigate. This resource may be helpful for a counselor, but is useless for an individual student. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Asset for Parents
I was skeptical at first because I don't want to be a "pushy" parent, but I found this book to be very enlightening. It's kind of like finding the secret key that unlocks the top colleges.I have two sons, and while I try not to drive them too hard, like most parents I realize that a great education is of the utmost importance.Having this book gives me a little bit of an edge over other parents, and hey, why wouldn't you want to have an edge?Let's face it, teachers and guidance counselors do their best, but they have many students to worry about. This book is like having your own personal consultant. Some of the tips are admittedly for the supremely dedicated, but others are little things you can easily do to give your child a little boost. The advice is really good and very easy to act on.I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, well written and on target
I found this book to be direct, clear, and useful. The author takes a position that some will appreciate and others will not: however, no one can come away without a clear understanding of her point of view.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice, but I'm ambivalent
This book contained a lot of facts that I didn't know -- like the fact that savvy parents have their kids take the SAT every year beginning in sixth grade to practice for the exam, like the fact that they take the SAT prep course BEFORE the PSAT, in order to help their kids get national merit scholar.Like the fact that it's possible to move your child up on the wait list by sending faxes and e-mails.Like the fact that you should practice for college interviews with your child, rehearse making a phone call to the school, and so on and so forth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Examkrackers Chemistry
This is a very good book. Amazon shipped it right away, in excellent condition. This book will help you get ready for the MCATs by acting as your very own tutor. I recommend getting all of the Examkracker series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for high yield review
To get into Med school after 15yrs in business I took my Organic Chem series over again, studied Exam Kracker's 101 series until I knew the books cold, listened to EK's Audio Osmosis about 10 times while communiting then took several full length practice tests.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.Do be fooled by other texts, this rocks!!!
First of all, if you consider yourself a 'pre-med' and serious about the MCAT, then as such you probably would've done some research about your products you are using... judging from the other reviews, they have not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
This book is absolutely HORRIBLE. Everything was just WAY too easy. The biology and chemistry portions consist of one-liners that barely scratch the surface of a topic. The spatial aptitude review problems are way too easy to even compare to anything you would see on the actual DAT. Plus, there aren't alot of them to practice on. I have never felt more "scammed" in the purchase of a book. I can't believe that such a well respected company like Kaplan would dare publish a test aid that was so watered-down. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dummies being the key word

I loved the author's jokes and formats of this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical advice for the college teacher
Professor Bean provides the theory behind his recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily very helpful. What one needs is practical advice, and this book has it---lots of it.Bean identifies different writing activities for students; shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom; suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course; discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning in essay exams.Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented.A highly recommended book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the classroom and get more out of a lecture course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Epic Resource
John C. Bean presents a thorough, logical discussion covering issues that (may seem basic) but that I for one, still struggle with - successfully integrating critical thinking writing assignments into my courses. 5-0 out of 5 stars insightful, thoughtful, and full of useful classroom tools
Bean's text is a thoughtful and useful pedagogical "storehouse" of ideas that teachers can use in their classrooms. Not only does the text provide the theory _behind_ collaborative/cooperative approaches toteaching, but it provides such ideas for a wide array of subjects.Anyonewho values the teaching of writing--whatever the subject area--will findgood value in Bean's text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Creative Teaching
Collaborative Learning Techniques is both a "how to" and a "why to" guide to collaborative learning.By providing simple, easy-to-follow examples of 30 collaborative learning techniques, it provides a starting point for faculty who wish to experiment with collaborative learning in their classrooms. Each technique is described in detail followed by several examples from a variety of disciplines.I particularly appreciated the observations and advice section and the tips for adapting to on-line environments.More importantly, however, this text goes beyond describing a few teaching tricks.By exploring the theory and research on collaborative learning it also facilitates "deeper learning" about why we do what we do in collaborative learning classrooms.Even faculty who have been using collaborative learning techniques for years will gain new insights from the authors' discussion of the nuances of a truly collaborative classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Collaborative Learning Text
This college handbook for group learning techniques is practical and common sensical. It covers basic information on the formation of groups, ideas for various classroom situations and settings, and methods of evaluations.Instructors should use various forms of evaluation in the classroom, and this text gives the instructor concrete methods to carry out the collaborative learning method. It is a wonderful tool for any college instructor and answers some of the questions concerning this form of evaluation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outmoded!
While this book is a good start for learning analogies and reviewing math, it's a horrid way to prepare for the actual experience of taking the exam. The distribution of sections--in number, length, and appearance of a research section--has changed since the publication of this text, and it doesn't prepare you for the fact you'll be doing everything on a computer on the Big Day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Help with Assessment
This book is an excellent resource for someone trying to understand how good assessment works. It is very easy to understand, provides lots of examples and doesn't try to confuse the reader by using excessive education jargon.A very good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
If your college is just beginning institutional assessment, then this is the book for you. It has several talking points that will allow faculty and the administration to join together in the task. Overall, I enjoyed it.

This is a great introduction to the assessment process with chapters specifically for departments and general education. The appendices include sample forms and processes for all types of assessment. A great practical resource for anyone responsible for creating an institutional or departmental assessment program. I know at my institution, faculty and administrators have been looking for something like this that can give them a concrete process for doing assessment. If you have only one book on assessment, this should be it.Other books fill in more about the theory and why, but the theory and why are nothing without implementation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Shifting the Focus
These days the trend in education has been to shift the focus of classes from the teachers to the students. The idea is that by taking responsibility for their own education and by learning by doing and working with others, students will be able to learn skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. On the other hand, teacher-centered lectures will only cause the students to cram for exams and quickly forget what they learned as soon as the exams are finished. This book offers an easy to read guideline for shifting your class to a learner-centered environment. The author has done a good job in writing a practical text. It's not weighed down with too many discussions of research and theory.Instead, the author presents her ideas through her own experiences and the experiences of other teachers. This makes it very easy to follow her recommendations as they have been tested and tried in a classroom setting rather than in an academic journal.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
This book not only makes the very strong case for a shift from teacher-centered to learner-centered instruction, it provides a road map for how to achieve that shift in both the classroom and the entire academic institution. It is an excellent book for both faculty and administrators in higher education.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful and well-researched approach
Expertly written by Maryellen Weimer (Associate Professor of Teaching and Learning, Berks-Lehigh Valley College, Pennsylvania State University), Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes To Practice is an invaluable resource for college and university educators concerning the learner-centered teaching approach that takes into account what, how, where, and what conditions under which students are learning. Individual chapters convincingly address implementation and fine-tuning adjustments to adopting the learner-centered teaching style, and the appendices include a syllabus, sample learning log, and more. A very useful and well-researched approach, Learner-Centered Teaching is an important and strongly recommended addition to Educational Reference collections and Classroom Instruction reading lists. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Missing data on test scores and campus crime
The book's jacket announces somewhat presumptuously: "students on campus tell you what you really want to know."
5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for first-timers
This book provides a good basic set of data and student comments on most of the colleges we're considering.A good companion is "Students' Guide to Colleges," which covers only the top 100 colleges, but is brutally honest. This Insider's Guide tends to present a pretty positive view of each college, although it provides a little more insight than just looking at the college's own website or viewbook. The Insider's Guide has colleges grouped by state.I think Insider's Guide gives us useful information about each college: the physical campus, the dorms and food, the use of drugs and alcohol, the types of activities students typically enjoy (sports, arts, whatever).

I think it's disgusting the lack of research Yale Daily News put into this 2007 guide. There are a hundred things wrong with this guide, but just from opening to the school I go to (University of Delaware), and seeing that one of the things I have to do before I graduate is "go to the Stone Balloon," I could tell this book was just a new cover to the 2006 with updated admissions statistics. The Stone Balloon, a historic University of Delaware Bar and Music Hall, announced more than a year ago that it was going to be knocked down and replaced by condiminiums on Main Street. This was true, and it was closed for the spring, and camera crews were there at the beginning of the summer to see huge bulldozers knock it over.Pretty sad that NO ONE will be able to fulfill the Insider's Guide's instructions.Sweet life Yale...do some research and stop making money reprinting the same "best-selling" book each year ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for getting to college level
We use this text for the supplemental/academic skills courses we offer at my community college, for those people whose reading skills are rusty for a number of reasons, including having been out of school for a number of years (sometimes as long as four or five decades), not having paid attention in class in high school, or other low-level literacy related reasons.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This book offers a good basis for learning skills necessary for successful reading, especially academic reading. The end of chapter readings offer a good cross selection of topics.

This book needs to be worded differently. I think it is a waste of money having to take this class for an entire semester. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Grant Wiggins, Warmed-Over
I got this book after reading the reviews posted here, and found it rather disappointing. First, the authors have taken from Grant Wiggins the idea that 'authentic assessment' should include assignments that test 'real-world' skills and interpreted it *very* literally; as a result you will find many examples here from soil science, forestry and engineering, but almost nothing at all from the humanities (I teach history and found no applicable examples). Combined with this is an implicit argument that the point of education is preprofessional training; the authors embrace the idea that the student is a consumer purchasing a skill set from teacher-salesmen. On top of that, it's very clumsily written. I found this a narrow and discouraging view of student-centered learning, which at its best not only applies well to the humanities, but offers a wider perspective on the 'preprofessional' as well: missing here are the ideas of generating essential questions, any discussion of how to incorporate those into syllabus design, or a coherent bigger picture in which engaging assignments that duplicate 'real-world' work are fitted into a learning trajectory. There is, however, a fair amount of discussion of the practice of assessment techniques such as the portfolio etc., but this can also be found in books that apply to a wider range of educational topics. Readers, esp. those from the humanities, interested in learner-centered assessment *and teaching* would be better served by going straight to Wiggins instead of reading the excerpted and narrower version of his arguments presented here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This book provides extensive information about using online environments in the classroom. It details implementations that worked, and implementations that didn't work to show how to implement online enviornments to best benefit students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Different and Powerful Approach to Assessment
Huba and Freed bridge the gap between assessment and student-centered teaching and learning. Throughout the text the authors include reflection questions to trigger thinking and changes in mental models. While the thrust of the book is conceptual, there are many practical suggestions for implementation in areas such as learning outcomes, rubrics, and other related areas of assessment. While compatible with other treatments of assessment, this is a unique perspective. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beneficial for new and seasoned professors alike
Successful Beginnings is divided into seven chapters, the first six of which focus on one of the following themes: course organization, first-day "icebreakers" to help start the semester well, building a good rapport with students throughout the semester, encouraging student participation and interaction, dealing with misbehavior in the classroom, and keeping students motivated through the mid and end-of-semester "blahs".The final chapter summarizes the main points of each prior chapter.Given the variety of subjects and classroom dynamics that professors work with, McGlynn does an admirable job of offering a variety of suggestions on any given topic. That way, even if certain suggestions aren't very applicable to a given professor's situation, others are more likely to be.My guess is that chapters one and four will be most beneficial to all teachers regardless of their subject matter or classroom size.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for beginnings, but for the middle & end, too!
I was amazed at how much good advice McGlynn packed into such a short book!I read it in one sitting, and constantly found myself saying, "yes, that's right," or "ok, I'll try that." She not only describes techniques that work for creating a more active learning environment in the classroom, but also (implicitly) explains why they work.To be sure, this is not an "academic book" in the sense of being top heavy with citations and references. 5-0 out of 5 stars Successful Beginnings means better learning
I'm sorry that this book wasn't available when I first started teaching. This book is such a valuable resource and guide to making all the right moves in preparing for and meeting students for the first time. Faculty in colleges are often isolated, and practical issues are rarely discussed, so "Successful Beginnings" goes a long way to rectify that situation. There is such a nice balance between theory and practical suggestions that experienced faculty will also find this book immediately helpful. Most importantly, Professor McGlynn takes readers beyond the beginnngs of courses to proven methods of effective classroom teaching and course management. She has a wonderful section on concluding courses in meaningful ways, and I plan to use some of her techniques myself at the end of this semester.Read more
