4-0 out of 5 stars Great book if your interested
This book is great if you're interested in how Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. came into existence, especially if you are interested in becoming apart of the organization. Another good book is The Divine Nine. Many people believe that there is animosity between DST and AKA because of the creation of DST. That is not so, and if you read this book you will find this to be true. Also, to dispel the complexion/color myth, if you look at the founders of both organizations you will see various, beautiful shades of brown, ranging from tan to sepia. There are pictures in The Divine Nine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Account of the History of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
The first time I read this book was Sophomore year of college at Clark Atlanta University.Once I began reading this book I realized that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an excellent example of what a sorority should be. The foresight of the founders to chart their own course and to consistently strive for excellence shines through even in the modern day activities of the sorority.Paula Giddings put her heart and soul into this book and it is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about sisterhood at its best.Although I am not a member, I will certainly make Delta Sigma Theta my first and only choice.Kudos to Ms. Giddings for a job well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars College students do make change in their communities and the country
I was never a Greek, but I read this book because I am familiar with Delta Sigma Theta from their activities at my alma mater, and have enjoyed Paula Giddings's other research about black women's history. Unsurprisingly, I also enjoyed this book. It explains how Delta Sigma Theta provided a critical organizing space for collegiate black women in an era trying to make them choose between the identities and at a time when their being in college itself was a rarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Social skills review
This has been an EXCELLENT book for me.I would say that I get 3/5 lessons for the week out of this book. The skill steps are listed out and easy for the students to follow and the independent practice is fun for the students.

2-0 out of 5 stars Strictly Junior High material
These social skills' lessons are much better suited to the level of junior high or even lower. My high school students did not respond to these activities and thus the title's suggestion (grade 7-12) is misleading.I will not try these activities again with my grade nine students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!
This book has been a life-saver for me as a new school counselor. It addresses many social skills issues which need to be addressed in the elementary school setting. It includes everything from how to make and keep friends, to anger, self-control and everything in between.Really a great resource!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LETTING GO: A PARENTS GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE COLLEGE YEARS, FOURTH EDITION
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. IT HAS BEEN OVER THIRTY YEARS SINCE I WAS A COLLEGE FRESHMAN AND THIS BOOK WAS INSIGHTFUL AND HELPFUL AS MY SON LEAVES FOR COLLEGE.I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR PARENTS WHOSE FIRST CHILD IS LEAVING FOR COLLEGE OR THEIR LAST CHILD.EVERY PARENT OF A COLLEGE STUDENT SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars big help
I was having a hard time dealing with my younger sisters going away to college but this book helped me to cope and put things into perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Letting Go and What's Next
As a Career Coach and parent of two college students, I have used this book as a personal and professional resource.Too often parents can get swept up in the busy high school years of their teen's junior and senior years.Along with parenting other children, working their own jobs, managing the home, etc.the stress of supporting their son or daughter for college or post high school education can be overwheliming, espcially for the student who is reluctant to commit to the research or is apathetic about the process of preparing for college selection.LETTING GO is a helpful resource for hanging in there, getting grounded in your role as parent, and helping you prepare for the changing family dynamics.Sending a student to college brings up the big question, what's next, not only for the student but the parent. This book can support both of you as you wrestle with the issues of independence, decision making, and planning a successful future. Plenty of college admission guides promise to help studentscrack the Ivy League, but few of these have detailed knowledge to backup their advice. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good IF your kid is a hyper-mega-achiever
This book is very useful if your kid has 800 SAt scores, an A avergae, and has discovered a cure for a fatal disease (well, practically!). if you have a bright, well-rounded normal kid who maybe hasn't hit their peak by age 17, though, pay attention to its real message -- the Ivys are NOT within the realm of reality. So be it. To find out what to do next, and to hold on to your sanity and humor while you do, see a great new book, GETTING IN WITHOUT FREAKING OUT

5-0 out of 5 stars A is for Admissions
This is probably the most helpful book that I have read about college admissions, because it gives real information instead of just maintaining the party line. It shows just how important standardized test scores are in the process and gives you the equation to figure out how you stack up against other ivy league hopefuls. I found this to be extremely enlightening. I would recommend this to anyone who is seriously considering applying to an top 20 college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
One of the finest books on competitive college admissions that I have ever read!As a public school guidance counselor, I have worked with many students who have gone through the process.I am constantly recommending this book to my most motivated students and their parents as I find it to be well organized and technical enough to help a reader understand the nuances of the Academic Index. The fact that the author was a Director of Admissions at an Ivy allows the reader to "peek behind the curtain."I highlighted the important points and went back after reading it and found that nearly every page has a significant point on it!If you are a motivated student or the parent of one who will be seeking out admissions at a competitive college - this book is a must read. ... If you are looking for a good EMT book, I would take my business over to the Brady series.Did the editor actually look at this thing?I would have to say no!Forget about it, move on.

2-0 out of 5 stars First responder
For the most part the book is very educational & easy to follow. Although there are many misspelled words, wrong or conflicting answers. Also, many topic areas taught aren't the way it is in the "real" world. To me it didn't look like the auther did much proof reading priorto it being published. Hopefully, there'll be a better book on the marketsoon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of it's subject
I am an instructional designer of online learning and in an effort to implement discussions in the courses I create, I ordered four books on discussion-based online learning. This book was by far the most comprehensive, balanced, and useful book of the four. While reading the book, I was immediately able to implement the strategies outlined in the book, and justify my reasons for implementing groups/discussions to the college instructors teaching the courses I create. I think that this book is valuable to anyone creating and supporting online learning: instructors, professors, instructional designers, trainers, and training managers. I even copied several pages of the book that justify online learning as a whole for my director.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Beyond the Technology to Constructivist Learning
Dr. Bender offers a well balanced view of online discussion as a teaching tool in asynchronous education. Clear, concise, practical and well documented concepts and applications fill this easily read textbook. The last section of the book provides a wonderful overview of the hot buttons on assessment in the online environment.Regardless of whether you are already implementing online discussion or if you are just considering online discussion as a new tool to add to your arsenal, you will find helpful insight in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars required nursing text
Great deal on amazon. Saved lots on a required book for nursing. Great deal from amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book - For Lawyers???
I work in law not medicine.I bought Taber's because of the many personal injury cases with which I was involved.People talk about legal language - nothing compares to medical terminology.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great staple for anyone in the medical field
Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary is all encompassing, defining the simplest to the most complex terms. To be honest, however, I rarely even open it because it came with access to their website for a 6 mo trial. Since I do most of my work (I'm still in school) on the computer, it's much easier for me to run a search than go get the book. Potential buyers: this is more of a "dictionary" than encyclopedia. You're not going to get long explanations but short definitions, otherwise it would be volumes and volumes long. One more thing: it's a very pretty book - well bound; having it on your book shelf makes you look like you actually might know what you're doing!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YES, IT IS A BOOK OF LISTS
Since 1980, Rugg's college book has helped thousands of counselors, parents, and students narrow down the overwhelming number of college options for young people. The 100 plus lists are VERY substantive, and Rugg thins out the USA's undergraduate college departments to a top 12%. To state, as a reviewer from Northfield, Minnesota did recently (July 17, 2006) "that the book is basically about location, etc." misses 98% of the book. A five-minute read of the five-page introduction informs one of what is in the book: the "top" departments at America's top colleges. How sad to have missed all that.
3-0 out of 5 stars Be aware: It's a book of lists
I'm sure this book fills a useful niche, but I did not realize before purchasing it that there would be no discussion of the programs listed at the various colleges. It is a book of lists, pure and simple. A good jumping-off place, I'm sure, but it tells one nothing substantive (besides the basic info about location, etc.) about the schools and programs listed other than that they "made the list." It's a reference book to consult at the library or school counselor's office, not a book to invest in as a college-bound student or parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges - 23rd Edition
No pictures of students sitting on the grassy area in front of the ivy covered brick building.Plain and simple, who has the best major programs, period. Every colleges claims they have a fantastic math, art, etc... department.Rugg's is the book that gives you some idea of how good a certain major program is at a particular college. So if you are looking for a top physics program with a strong art program, you can find it. Ruggs is the go to book, it rates the major not the school's glossy brochure. Undecided? you can use Ruggs to find the schools that have strong programs in the 4 areas you are interested in so if your first major choice doesn't work out, you can change majors without having to change school. This book got us to our top 10 choices for schools based on area of interest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Parents of College Bound Children
Excellent read for parents of college bound children. Illuminates which attributes may differentiate a student from the crowd.

What a great book...The inside scoop on the hidden world of admissions. I've worked in an admissions office before (at a highly competitive school) and this was pretty much on target.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
As a former admission officer, I found the book to be quite honest and descript.Unveiling the process behind the ever-elusive curtain, it is a book for anyone who is truly interested in how a class is shaped on a College or University campus.I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read and was captivated at the stories of the students. ...
