4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
I found the book to be a good read and had a lot of interesting things to say and good examples of activities for online participants.
5-0 out of 5 stars a useful guide for distance learning
This book is ideal for the professor or instructor who is providing instruction through distance learning. For online instruction to be successful, students cannot just sit and absorb content passively. The online professor/instructor must encourage an engaged learning environment, which is described by the authors as an environment based on constructivist principles and problems-based learning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide :)
This book is appropriate to me. I am relatively new to the online learning enviroment and at last I found individual and collaborative activities focused on constructivism and problem-base learning. This activities are a wonderful guide to move learners gradually from traditional rol until they become more self directed. Many books on the topic of online instruction offer innovation and they only present lecture-based approach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sanity-saving read!
In NOrthern Virginia, it's possible to start obsessing about colleges when your kids are still in kindergarten -- but this book provides a wonderful dose of reality. No, you won't "die" if your child doesn't get into Princeton or UVA and you might even find yourself shocked by the great education he or she can get elsewhere!(And apparently you don't have to torture them with SAT guidebooks in the intervening 10 or so years before they apply to make this dream a reality!)
1-0 out of 5 stars Steer clear of this outdated guide
Read the first paragraph in the book and then run.Pope's argument can be stated in a single sentence:small, liberal arts colleges throughout the U.S. can provide an excellent education. However, he ruins his credibility by using weak logic, meaningless examples, and very outdated personal research. It's like listening to your dad's retired guidance counselor thumping his fist on your desk, spitting, "The Ivy League stinks."Let's face it:the Ivies are great and small liberal arts schools can be great, too. It's all a matter of finding the right match, but Pope won't help you do that.Buy any other guide and you'll be better off.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
This book is a load of crap... and thats the nicest thing I can say about it.I couldn't even stand to finish it, though I got most of the way through it.

Editorial Review

The essay is the one part of the college application that allows an admissions committee to get a glimpse not only of what you are (grades, scores, club member), but of who you are."Applicants are constantly advised to 'put their best foot forward,'" says Fred Hargadon, the dean of admissions at Princeton University and a contributor to this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!
Before I bought this book I thought my essay was pretty good until I bought this book. Then I knew that I could make my essay even better just by just following the essays in the book.I didn't even think I needed to get a guide book for my essay because I thought it was pretty good already without help from an essay book. But apparently this book worked really good because I did not get deferred from college!I got into my first choice just by using this book and I recommend it to anyone even to those who do not think they need a guide book for their essays because they think their essays are already pretty good like I thought mine was.1-0 out of 5 stars uninventive and most unhelpful
There are a few gems here, but for the most part, these essays are the same well-written but dry, uninventive slop every other high school senior dribbles out: how the abroad student haf a Life Changing Experience! how an athlete Crossed the Finish Line! how when pet Fluffly croaked it was a Formative Experience! If you really want insight into how to write a well-crafted, unique essay, with sounds suggestions, seek out the great book by Harry Bauld. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars nice explanations
Abrams supplies very nicely written explanations of many terms you are likely to come across in literature, or more specifically, in literary studies. If you have puzzled over an "objective correlative", then he explains that it wasn't due to TS Eliot, as many believe, but to Allston. Though Eliot was the one responsible for popularising the term. Or, if you want to use "doggerel" properly when deconstructing some Bukowski poem, perhaps check Abrams first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware Beware!
The reader who complains that the 8th edition is radically different from previous editions with respect to the definitions of literary terms such as sonnet and ode is entirely mistaken. The entries on these and other terms are either unchanged from earlier editions or improved and updated. Moreover, a number of new terms have been added.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Lovers of Literature
Every student of literature should have their own copy of this book. Non-students would get a lot out of this too. And while the price might appear excessive, I think in the long-term this book is a worthwhile investment. What makes this guide of literary terms different from others, is its comprehensiveness. Abrams goes into great detail on the important terms that one comes across most often in literature. There is information on theories and movements in criticism and terms such as modernism and post modernism, are clearly defined. there is also material on symbolism, metaphor and other figures of speech and so on. A Glossary of Literary Terms, now in its 8th edition, is written in a lucid style, and is a must buy for anyone who wants to expand their literary horizons. Recommended. 5 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Convincing
A measure of the tortured relationship between higher education and sports is the fact that this is the second substantial book by William Bowen on this topic. The former President of Princeton and the present head of the Mellon Foundation, Bowen deployed the considerable resources of the Mellon Foundation to address this topic. The prior book, The Game of Life, was controversial because of conclusions that athletics have had a distorting effect on admissions and academic life at institutions thought to be free of the gross distortions seen at American Universities with scholarship driven athletic programs. After studying prestigious and very selective schools like the Ivy League universities and smaller schools like Amherst, Williams, and Wesleyan, Bowen and his co-author concluded that athletes enjoyed substantial and unmerited advantages in admissions, tended to relatively underperform academically, and actually had a negative effect on campus life. There conclusions were assailed, sometimes with some force, on the basis of limited data samples and reliance on anecdotal information.5-0 out of 5 stars Telling it like it is
The authors have collected an enormous amount of data and presented it lucidly and tellingly. That alone is worth the price of the book. However one feels about elite institutions using different admission standards for recruited athletes, the authors should be given credit for illuminating the facts.
1-0 out of 5 stars Intellectually Dishonest
When he was president of Princeton, William Bowen was responsible for the "problem" he now criticizes. As president of the Mellon Foundation, he is responsible for millions of dollars of grants to Ivy and similar universities, and thus wields enormous power with them as he picks and chooses recipients of the largess he controls.Coincidentally, the "co-author" of this volume is the daughter of one of those recipients--the president of Yale.Just look at the list of people who "helped" him with drafts of the book.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some useful information, but otherwise frustrating
I'm a current master's applicant, and I purchased this book due to recommendations and some of the reviews I've read on this site, and I must say, it's somewhat disappointing. Ostensibly, it's a "one size fits all" masters/PhD book, but (as others have mentioned) it's a little biased towards PhDs, and seems rather Ivy League-oriented. Oftentimes, Peters focuses on the ideal response (mitigating factors be damned) to the cold realities of academia, and it just leaves me with more questions than answers.
4-0 out of 5 stars A star to every wand'ring bark
I found the transition from college to graduate school to be more difficult than the transition from high school to college.Though I excelled at the carefully ordered world of my undergraduate days, I felt rudderless and alone in the much less structured world of grad school. This book was invaluable: tips on navigating the swamp of classes, research, and "real life", surviving grad student penury, and, most of all, a constant exhortation to keep one's eyes on the prize.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
I had an attitude problem about finishing my Ph.D.This book sooooo helped me.I wish I had read it before even starting my Master's degree.I would have done MANY things differently.A MUST read for anyone considering grad school.I'm now an academic advisor for undergrads, and I highly recommend this book.In addition, I recommended it to the dean of graduate studies in my college.A great resource for all areas of study.Even though the author got his degree in the "hard" sciences, and I in the social sciences, this book is very relevant! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book!!!!!!
This book has cut my grading time in half.It is very practical. It has numerous examples and a step-by-step approach to make rubric creation easy.I read several other books about rubrics but most of them were for K-12, program assessment or were completly theoretical. This book tells you have to create a tool that will allow you to grade quickly and fairly.A must have for college teachers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Help yourself know if your students are learning in class.
Rubrics (in education) in a way is like points with certain specifications (rules/requirements) you seek from your students in the work they are doing. How do you know if your students are learning history or english literature? What is the content you seek, ask, or want of them when it deals with their work? With rubrics, you will find out where exactly the student is in the material you are teaching plus the student will also know what he or she is lacking or has achieved in the unit lesson(s). If you are a beginning teacher please get this book because more and more -rubrics are being applied to unit lessons in the nations public schools. The authors (Stevens and Levi) who hail from Portland have done a super job at breaking this topic down by using clear soft writing. Being a teacher(educator) is not easy but with rubrics you will be more clear in what you ask of your students, then you will know if they have learned the material or not. Rubrics(a grid with your written specifications) will help you target everything. This is literature that teachers, substitutes and collegiate professors should have in there mini library. 10 stars! Rubrics is the bridge that links students and teachers together because both will know where one is at. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Warning
My warning to young students buying this book is quite simple.Don't turn to this book hoping to find answers that you cannot find on your own. This book offers some great advice, but like all self help books, good advice isn't always that easy to put into practice (nor is it always needed).First year of University can be a very intimidating time, don't buy this book out of fear like I once did.Find your own courage, your own inner strength and don't take this book too seriously, because at the end of the day you need to find what works for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great advice (but somewhat repetitive)
This is one of the first books I recommend to tenure-track junior professors and to graduate students going on the academic job market. It should be on the book shelf of every new faculty member.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mentor in a Box
I am surprised that anyone who criticizes this book as obvious is bothering to read such a book.If it is so obvious, then you are probably one of the "exemplars" that Boice studied to formulate his analysis.Either that, or one of the struggling faculty members he studied, who fail because they are too proud to believe that anyone else has anything to offer. For the rest of us mortals, this book is fantastic.5-0 out of 5 stars Best advice on writing practices I have read.
Some reviewers have criticized this book for being obvious.I found it anything but.The culture of my field says that the way to write a paper is to set aside large, uninterrupted blocks of time.It was an eye-opening experience to see hard data that show it is more effective to write in brief daily sessions. These writers are roughly twice as productive by several measures (pages written, manuscripts published) and also report themselves to be happier. This idea changed my professional life.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars College Board College Handbook
We used this book to help my daughter pick the colleges she would apply to.The book is a wealth of information about every 2 and 4 year college in the United States. At a glance you can find out the cost, academic offerings, SAT scores, clubs and organizations and ethnic makeup just to name a few.I highly recommend it to anyone applying to college.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough to do well on the test.
This book provides good information and the tests really helped. However,to be as prepared as you want to be, you should get a good textbook for the test you plan to take, in addition to this book. This book alone does not have enough information by itself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Business Mathematics review
I used this book to prepare for the DANTES test two years ago. It was an effective guide on what to study. I would not rely solely on it's content to pass the test. Additional resources are needed. I passed the test w/ an above average score.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ethics in America
I used this book to study Ethics in America.I think it is an excellent source but I always study more than one source.I think this book would have been sufficient to pass but I would recommend also reviewing instantcert or looking up terms and people in an online encyclopedia such as reference.com.The test is screwy so I can't imagine any book being perfect but this one is sufficient.I got a high 73 on the exam.Definitely use this book for Ethics in America. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opener for Practitioners & educators
The problems that face professionals (physicians, lawyers, architects) are rarely straightforward and clear. They are complex and lack "right answers." Skillful professional practice often depends less on factual knowledge than on the ability to reflect before taking action. Yet most professional schools only teach theory and how to apply it to straightforward problems. Frankly, future professionals are being poorly equipped for the real world.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Read for All High School Teachers
I read this book as a part of a Graduate level course in education I am taking at Rutgers University; the very University its author Michael Smith (who co-wrote with Jeffrey Wilhelm) once taught at. I found this book indispensible in its informative snapshots of high school boys from different backgrounds. It is clear that the language arts do not suffer from irrelevance for boys but perhaps from being taught in such a way that does not connect the texts with the boys' existing literary knowledge. After reading this book, you will learn that there are many ways to engage boys in the teaching of the language arts. I highly recommend this book. It is one of the top five best educational books I have read so far. Exceptional!

5-0 out of 5 stars We'refailing our boys by ignoring their interests
I heard about this book on Amazon, and quickly picked it up. As a teacher of middle school English learners who will soon be transitioning to mainstream classes, I have had many battles with students, especially boys, who hate to read. At the beginning of the year, I have my students complete this statement on a piece of paper: "When I read, I feel....".From the boys, I've gotten such responses as "bored", "tired", "sleepy", and, strangely enough, "hungry".The reality is, our male students are falling through the cracks because they are not engaged with the texts. If students aren't engaged by "Death of a Salesman" or "The Scarlet Letter", then why do we still force them to read these books? One solution to solving the problem of low literacy skills among boys would be to allow more book choices.Literature circles are great, because they give students a choice. If one circle is reading "Lord of the Flies" and doesn't want to read it, then he could get in the group that's reading the book he wants to read."Reading Don't Fix No Chevys" is an insightful, well-researched book that I have been recommending to all my fellow Language Arts and ESL/ELD teachers. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Inspiring for Any Teacher of Language Arts
This book significantly changed the way I, as a teacher of Language Arts, think about what we do in secondary classrooms every day. Without ever being strident or laying blame, the authors methodically, movingly demonstrate that in so many ways, most middle schools and high schools are still far off the mark in how they teach English. And yet, the answer is right there--all we have to do is listen to the kids.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Teachers and to the College Bound
This book really has two goals. It's original and main intent is aimed at high school teachers who are preparing students for college. In this vein it addresses what should be tought to students and how they should be taught.

1-0 out of 5 stars Feminist dribble and inane ramblings
I had the misfortune of having to read this book as part of my A-level studies whilst at school and as many school children in England in the early 1990s will agree it was 'the' worst book to force young minds to read. The main character is so tediously dull that I did have a miniscule amount of empathy for her to end it all, but my desire was based more upon the fact that it would mean the end of the very dull story. It's yellow wallpaper for goodness sakes.Don't read into it that this is something deep and meaningful, because it isn't.If you're like me you won't care about the character's, you'll just wish that you were not reading about them. This is the 19th century version of MTV, you will be left feeling empty, like you just wasted a few hours of your life on something not worthy of it.do yourselves a favour, if you get anything from this book it's this.Write a load of mindless drivel, leave it to some socially challenged critics to make something out of nothing and you'll be on to a winner. In 100 years time kids will be forced to read it in schools and they'll probably hate you for it, but you won't care because you'll be long gone.As should be the case with the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The (yellow) walls are closing in...
I found this story to be both very disturbing and at the same time wonderful in its skill of disturbance. The suspense of what would happen to the narrator was as omnipresent and looming as the wall-paper which surrounded the narrator herself.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Yellow Wallpaper Review
The book is a classic. Yet, you need a certain taste for certain types of knowledge. Such as women and gender studies. As well as you certainly need to enjoy reading professional opinions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars View from Inside a Cocoon
After a twenty year career as a college professor, I continue to read books that challenge the academic world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Big surprise
My best friend from first grade went to Harvard College in 1971. Since the Ivy League at that time was still all-male, I went to Mount Holyoke College. We met again at Tufts, him in the Medical School and myself in the Dental School. Don said the hardest part of Harvard was getting in; no course he took in the pre-med department could hold a candle to the AP Chemistry course he took at our public high school.I feel he sold out his considerable abilities as a paper-pusher for an HMO, but he may disagree. But the fact remains that although he has an MD he doesn't see many patients.Classmates of mine who spent semesters at the Ivy League schools also commented on the easy courses and high grades.Granted, at MHC some students took the easy way out; our class valedictorian was a French major who was from France! And for that you paid what? This book doesn't tell other college grads anything they didn't already suspect. My daughter graduated from Quinnipiac, and my son is a sophomore at Centenary College in New Jersey. The only parents I met who wanted their son to go to Harvard weren't interested in what he wanted or if he belonged there. That's the trouble with being Harvard: so many people just want the name. Both my kids had interests and looked for the schools that had the programs they wanted. The book is well-written and a good read, and it will make you glad your kids didn't want to go to Harvard!

5-0 out of 5 stars of course
Of course, we all know Harvard sucks. Take the entering first-year class, from the highest income brackets in the world, and still them in any situation, and they'll be fine. Harvard doesn't add any educational value - it just isn't messing the students up. Besides, the college exists to serve the needs of the professors, not the students. This book is a biting indictment of a meaningless and benign institution that does little to help the students who walk through its doors and adds little, if any, value to society. ... Read more
