5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD READ!
I originally purchased this book to learn about a sorority I was interested in joining while in undergrad. Although I never joined any sorority in the NPHC, I found this book to be extremely insightful! It is a must have for those persons interested in learning about the history of these organizations and/or thinking about joining one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I thought the book was interesting. It gave a general overview of each organizations, with a little extra emphasis on Alpha Phi Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, but that can be expected, since he is an Alpha and his wife is a Delta. I do, however feel that he leaned too far when he went over what happened in the beginning with Delta and AKA, but that's just my opinion. There are so many different versions out there, each side has their own version, but since no one was there, we don't really know what happened. As one other reviewer stated, the Alpha Kappa Alpha hymn is misquoted. I think that theSigma Gamma Rho sister was a little confused. Under Hattie McDaniel's picture, it clearly states that she was "A prominent member of Sigma Gamma Rho", but the letters AKA are at the bottom of the page, and Sigma Gamma Rho are at the top.
4-0 out of 5 stars good reference
The book was very insightful for my reference in researching the different sororities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Former Harvard University President Derek Bok warns that making commercial ventures part of the fabric of U.S. higher education endangers universities' basic values and goals. However, he also gives compelling descriptions of why trustees and administrators are tempted to sign deals with corporations. He is realistic about the slim prospects for keeping such ventures away, especially since some - like sports teams - are already entrenched. Because Bok's analysis is so deeply rooted in his years of experience leading Harvard, his proposed guidelines for how and when to allow big business on campus are particularly helpful. His views are occasionally unwarrantedly sunny, such as when he avers that faculty members rarely guide students into work that promotes the teacher's financial gain. He also asserts that faculty must be wary of collaborating with pharmaceutical companies to get access to facilities and materials, even though funding unfettered research has become increasingly difficult. Furthermore, after asserting that doctors are alert to drug companies' promotions in sponsored continuing education courses, he acknowledges research showing that doctors who attend such courses are more likely to prescribe the companies' drugs. Despite such detours, we find this book extremely valuable for anyone who believes that academic freedom and integrity truly matter. Academic leaders should read Bok's important, thoughtful and useful ideas on ways that colleges can minimize the risks of commercialization.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on Bok's Universities in the Marketplace
Derek Bok does a respectful job in describing the issues. The book provides an excellent foundation for the general public to understand the influence of commercialization on higher education.Higher education is big business in the United States. The book's relevance to issues related to intercollegiate athletics, higher education research, online delivery of education and other influences on academics is necessary to understanding the impact of commercialization, both positive and adverse, on higher education today.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great information
Athletic marketing, academic research, alumni donations, corporate research and marketing are all topics that uniquely affect the quality and diversity associated with academic freedom. The level of control that should be applied to higher education by outside forces is the main premise of this book.Mr. Bok takes each issue and delves deeper in the cause and effect of the commercial opportunities available to institutions of higher education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarship Reconsidered-A mandate for new scholars
This text offered insights for anyone, currently involved in, or considering the academic profession. The authors do a wonderful job in decribing the current expectations of academia at the period this text was constructed. Unfortunately, the book does paint the picture many would expect. It is unfortunate that higher education may have strayed from the teaching mission whether intentionally or indirectly but the authors offer alternatives as to how to approach the situation and that it may not be as polarized as it may appear.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, Effective Read
Boyer gives concrete advice for anyone that wishes to enter the world of academia or who is already in the academy that wants to refocus their efforts for maximum results. The book is easy to read and gives great food for thought.

3-0 out of 5 stars a leader of educators
Dr.Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate is one of the most famouse works about American education. Two years ago I read the book in China.By the way, I'm a Chinese graduate. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maximizing Resources with Program Prioritization
Dickeson's book is a comprehensive manual for academic administrators at all levels who need to maximize resources because of cutbacks. Since the most likely source for needed resources is reallocation of existing resources, he suggests a means to prioritize programs so administrators can make well-informed decisions. Dickeson's ideas have a firm basis in practical applicaitons. He has served as a university president and is currently president of a consulting firm that has guided hundreds of colleges and universities through program prioritization. This book contains checklists at all stages of the planning process plus samples of actual priortizing plans and is a very useful resource not only at the institutional level but for any program undergoing review. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My son goes to Elon!
For a parent -- whose son goes to Elon University (Class of '08) -- this is a fascinating read. It should be very interesting (required reading?) for any private college administrator, potential student/parent, or major donor (it desperately needs to build endowment). Last year there were 9,000 applicants for a Freshman class of 1,200. Elon is indeed a former "hidden gem" college that has definitely ARRIVED! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I could have used this
I only wish this book was around when I was researching colleges in NY! It's very comprehensive, simple to understand for any high school senior, and all of the information is up to date. Most other books hardly touch on the creative student- this book specializes in it. I recommended it to all the high schools in my area, and I'm pleased to say that they all love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
"Creative Colleges is very informative and it would have been so helpful to my daughter as a high school senior (she is now in college). It is much better to know about the things that are in this book well in advance. It is very helpful for parents and students starting the research. Also, there is very little information out there like this."
5-0 out of 5 stars a great resource for creative students
As if being a student in the college search and application process is not challenging enough, student actors, artists, dancers, and musicians are presented with additional and different sets of options and challenges. Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers by Elaina Loveland is a great resource for creative students, the parents of creative students, and the counselors who work with creative students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for students!
The Professor's Guide to Getting Good Grades in College, by Jacobs and Hyman, is a book that has been needed in college classrooms for a very long time. The book follows the student through the course of a normal semester and gives them advice and tips on just about every aspect of academic life, covering everything from how to select courses through how to handle the major hurdles of the semester. In the course of their advice, one major theme rings particularly clear: the value of communication. This one single idea appears numerous times throughout the work and is perhaps the most useful thing that an inexperienced college student can learn about how to make their grades better.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT, CONCISE ADVICE FROM INSIDERS
Why didn't anybody think of this before? There are dozens of guides on how to get into college, but the publishing world has left millions marooned there once they get in.And it can be quite bewildering. Finally, these two extremely well informed and clear-headed professors have demystified the art of staying in college and doing well there.Once, such advice was available only to a lucky and privileged few with personal or family ties to faculty members.Too many bright and capable students figure out how to do well over four years--they only learn the ropes by the time it's too late.Their overall college record suffers unnecessarily because nobody bothers to tell them what this bookfinally makes clear is so simple and straightforward. In particular, this book's advice on writing papers will give its readers a huge advantage, and get them on track to success in college right from the start. The authors know all the tricks of the trade and explain them clearly without any intimidating jargon or preaching. They want you to do well and lay out the path toward doing well step by step. You could not spend your money more wisely at the start of your college career than on this book--I only wish it had been available earlier.I have been teaching college at a major state university for l4 years--I will recommend this book to my students, which will save them-- and me--a lot of time and unnecessary grief.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but...
I am torn between three and four stars for this book but Amazon won't give me a 3.5 option.I have taught at the university level for the past five years and certainly most students can benefit from what is in this book.I want to encourage students to buy (and read) this book. The mythbusting that the authors engage in is certainly worth the price of the book. You can pay now with a little cash or pay later with a low grade to find out the truth about grading.Almost every chapter has good information.I especially liked Chapters 2, 4, 5, and 9.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great motivational text
I read this before beginning my own dissertation, and have recommended it to many others. The primary value I got from it was as a motivator to get started - often one of the most difficult steps in writing a dissertation. The information contained in this book will not replace a good mentor, but can be a supplement to a mediocre one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good guide
This is great for some helpful overall tips and such. It WILL NOT tell you anything that a good adviser/mentor doesn't already know!

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me...
A wonderful step-by-step guide for any potential, doctoral candidate. What I found most helpful was the review of "interview questions that you will most likely be asked"/"questions you should ask."In my doctoral interviews, I WAS asked approximately 3/4 of the questions that were indicated in this section. And as the book states, going into an interview without questions of your own is the kiss of death!More important are the details/process that most of us give little attention to (e.g. how to reject an offer of acceptance graciously, timelines, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful and covers everything!
This book is a really great addition to any students collection of resources for getting into graduate school (even if it is the only one you buy).True, much of the information can be obtained from other sources (such as websites), but it is ALL there, well organized in one little book!I would recommend using multiple sources in your search for the best way to get into whatever program you are applying for, but this book should probably be included.Has great explanations of all types of issues you might confront when looking at applying tograduate school.Great advice and timelines for the undergraduate years, whether you are a freshman or a senior starting to think about graduate school (but start early if you can).
4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource
This book is indisputably a great resource. However, I felt that too much basic, basic information was included. A good deal of the book is information that an undergrad student in PSYC should already know...especially if he/she is truly to be prepared for grad-level work. Weeding out those things, there were some great insights and data. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for college administrators
If there is a college administration/student personnel services program that DOES NOT have this as required reading, it should. This is the most comprehensive (and heaviest!) book in the field---summarizing research and theory that is most relevant to today's college administrators and educators. Not only should it be on their shelves---but should be taken down and referred to often!

Editorial Review

At adolescence, says Mary Pipher, "girls become 'female impersonators' who fit their whole selves into small, crowded spaces." Many lose spark, interest, and even IQ points as a "girl-poisoning" society forces a choice between being shunned for staying true to oneself and struggling to stay within a narrow definition of female. Pipher's alarming tales of a generation swamped by pain may be partly informed by her role as a therapist who sees troubled children and teens, but her sketch of a tougher, more menacing world for girls often hits the mark. She offers some prescriptions for changing society and helping girls resist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Saving the minds of parents of adolescent girls
this book gives a great overview of what our children are facing. it was written in the 1990's and refers to that date, however i believe that the truths it holds are even more true today. i found it full of great information that explained alot of things. however, if you are looking for what to do to save them, this book does not really spend too much time on focusing on that though it does go over a couple suggestions briefly. i would highly recommend this book to anyone with children be they teens or not, be they girls or boys the information is invaluable. good luck to all of you out there. ... I found this book very helpful. It started by going through the PA profession, and then got into how to actually go about making this a career. It explains each step of the application process, and gives very helpful tips.Overall, this was a great book.I would highly recommend it for anyone considering entering the PA profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but outdated
I found the information about interviewing helpful but much of the information about the application itself was outdated. The book was written before CASPA was widely used. Also, the author provides a personal website and encourages readers to contact him with any questions, but this website is no longer around. This book is a good cheap purchase, but no substitute for advice from current students.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book for any aspiring PA prospect!!
I purchased this book the summer of 2005 to begin my "preparations" for entry into the 2006 application cycle. I had aquired all of my prerequisites for the program I was interested in and wanted all of the ammunition I could get my hands on in preparation for the interview process. This book gave me perfect guidance in all aspects of the application process. And if I can do it, OH MY!, anyone can do it!! (If you only knew me ten years ago!) Although I do have a few years of medical experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist under my belt, I applied to only ONE school this year and I just received the call last week for the acceptance! My first go round and I couldn't have asked for more. As competetive as most medical programs are this book, I believe, gave me THE edge to succeed. I can't praise the book enough for all of the insights this book includes, From written preparations to speaking patterns and interview scenerios. A year ago I was sitting in the same chair you were wondering if it was just a crock. Buy it! It is the cheapest book you'll purchase through your entire program. What do have to lose? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Current law student
I was not very impressed with this book. This is even more true as I continue my legal education. The advice for those thinking of going to law school seemed like common sense. Some of the 1L information was good but a lot does not really apply unless you are going to a school similar to those the 'mentors' attended.Other items that they say will help you get ahead just seem like shortcuts that will probably burn you in the long run.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beacon in the darkness
Law School Confidential is a must read for anyone considering law school. It's very helpful when you get there, too. The book is a beacon in the darkness of the first days of class. I consult it on a regular basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for new teachers
I have been teaching for 10 years and have had lots of opportunity to put these techniques into practice. Many of the times discussions did not go well -- and the book describes why. Many times the discussions went well -- and the book describes why. In short, the book reflects the good and bad experiences I have had and so seems true to my experience. I wish I had a book of this sort when I was first starting out. Since discussion is encouraged today as it enables more action in class, but it can be very daunting encouraging students to get started and keep a discussion productive, fair, and equally engaging for all students. So a guide like this can be a great help. Some of the suggestions are very practical and easy to use and make a big difference in the class.

3-0 out of 5 stars I am not a teacher
I am not a teacher, so I read this book looking for ways to better facilitate discussions/dialogues in democratic settings outside of the classroom. There are so many good ideas. My favorite is the Circle of Voices- 5 people stand in a circle, each speaking uninterrupted for 3 minutes. When you go back to the full group, you are only supposed to report the ideas of the others who were in your circle, so that everyone's opinion is heard, even if they are not a forceful speaker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book!
I've been teaching at the college level for over ten years, and I'm always searching for new ideas to use in the classroom. When I ordered this book, I wasn't sure what to expect since the reviews were mixed; however, I was very pleased with this book.
