5-0 out of 5 stars Use This Instead of the 7th Edition!!
If you are taking a class that calls for the 7th Edition, you can use the 6th edition of this book. Not much changed except that a few chapters were switched around.I used the 6th Edition in a class that used the 7th Edition and got an A.: )I'm sure everyone can think of a lot better ways to spend $90+!
4-0 out of 5 stars Foundational book for conflict resolution
Easy reading, with good examples of the various types and styles of conflict management, metaphors and escalation.Upon hearing the fate of Phil Hartman, I immediately thought of this book, and how its examples may have definately helped, as it has helped me to clarify issues in my marriage. However, the book failed to incorporate enough visual demonstrations of its "hands-on" ideas such as flowcharts or other types of process charts, thus probably causing the "visual-learner" type of audience to not be able to keep track of the "how-to" process. The book was used for a Public Conflict Resolution Ph.D course, however I would recommend it for any type of college course relating to conflict management. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
Many of the other reviews sound disappointed in the depth of the explanations. When using this book, it is important to remember that it is a REVIEW, not a teaching textbook.Kaplan definitely makes the assumption that you have had in-depth courses in the the subjects by making references to things but not providing much explanation. This book is best used, in my opinion, as a sort of checklist for possible material that could be on the MCAT.If there is any area the preparee is weak in, the best way to re-learn it is to find an actual textbook.
3-0 out of 5 stars Overall a very good place to start
I have used the MCAT material on the CDs before. After studying other MCAT material regularly for about 12 weeks, I cracked open this book and software, and took the practice exams over the course of 4 weeks. I got this book dirt cheap using the strategies given in this other book me and my roommate brought from admissionsmystery. com which also a very insightful book. This book at times is humbling and punishing. The reading passages are long and confusing. Nonetheless, this book was pivotal in me achieving a high MCAT score. Yet of course you are taking the MCAT, you are going to having more reference material than this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book to start with
Personally, I found this book pretty helpful, and I have no complaints about it as I scored high having spent about half of my prep. time with this book. As I said, it's a good place to start. Beware, though, that this book alone will not be enough. As some reviewers complained, this book is not all that thorough, so it helps immensely if you have taken classes on the covered subjects and actually remember what you've learned. I personally had to use my old textbooks a bit to understand some things outlined in this book. But, MCAT being as comprehensive as it is, I don't think you can expect a single book to thoroughly cover everything you need to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Words for the SAT
I received the order quickly and the book was in great condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool for students w/average vocab
I have used this book in my high school junior English classes, and for most students it is very helpful. It's true that it's harder to write quizzes on the words because of the cluster method, but that's a teacher's problem, not a student's. The clusters do help them remember words that are related. I've talked to SAT prep instructors who highly recommend this book. Unless you're a vocab star, give it a try.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book unless u noe it all
The structure of this book is amazing especially their ideas to cluster words. its a lot easier to learn words that way. But if u believe that ur vocab is really amazing or if uve learnt the words from Barron's Mega 3500 word list then don't go 4 this book. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Perspective
I applaud the author for 1) initiating discussions about college life and anthropological ethics, and 2) educating many with her courageous work. Each of these is a great feat and the lifework of many college professors. In this book, she has accomplished it --bravo!
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! This Brings Me Back and More!
This is a spectacular publication of the findings of one anthropology professor's journey into the habitat and life of the indigenous undergraduate student. While this book does not read like a novel, it is much more analytical in scope, its well-written style provides an interesting perspective of undergraduate life while always leading the reader onward to learn more of the author's discoveries. While this is in no way an exhaustive analysis of the lived experiences of all undergraduate freshmen, it is a unique look inside a rather exclusive - and once-in-a-lifetime - experience that is normally closed to parents, aspiring students and college professors, to name a few.
4-0 out of 5 stars Professor Becomes Student at Her Own School
Northern Arizona University anthropology professor Cathy Small decided to enroll as a freshman there during the 2002-2003 school year. This was to be her sabbatical project -- an ethnographic study of college culture at a public university. She turned in her faculty card and parking permit and lived in a coed dorm, attending classes and taking careful notes -- on those around her. She became a participant-observer, going to classes, reading the graffiti in the women's restrooms and probing feelings about cheating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for the high school graduate
My son received this book as a graduation gift.I ordered 6 copies to give to his friends.Everyone loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Without a Doubt -- Required Reading!
I should start off by saying that I've bought The Naked Roommate for my son, my son's friends, my nephews, my nieces, and for my friends' children and a few friends (they were having a tough time dealing with the college transition). Every single person who has picked it up has raved about it.The book captures the essense of college life in a way that is rarely seen and heard.I just heard through my nephew that it's being used as required reading on his friend's colleges. I was familiar with the author from his advice column, and appreciate his style of writing.I'm also a fan website(thenakedroommate.com) an online forum for the book. I found the title after I came across a rave review by the New England Board of Higher Education (I'm a teacher). That was last year, and this year I saw it everywhere! But I saw it first! Anyone who has something disparaging to say about this book, clearly has not read the book or has some other motive. In conclusion, this book is smart, funny, witty, extremely well researched, on the the best book out there for students, parents, educators, and anyone who wants to know about college life.I can't wait for his next.I'm sold.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Waste of Time
I read this book for an english summer homework assignment. Although the back description and introduction allude to an interesting and valuable read, do not expect much. This book is a sore disappointment for anyone who possesses a genuine love of reading. The plot is unbelievably simplistic and unoriginal and it was difficult for me to believe that two well educated scholars wrote it. I was bored to tears after the opening paragraph of the "story" and have had a tough time finishing it. If it weren't for the fact that I will be tested on this, I would have gladly exchanged it for a more engaging read. In terms of SAT prep, it was not entirely helpful there either. Many times throughout the book, it seemed as though the authors exchanged simpler words for complex, lesser known SAT words. The problem was that the SAT words did not fit the context and were spoken by characters that would not have had any clue about the word. The characters were dull and 2-D without ever developing or being explored. The dialogue was unreal and forced. 2-0 out of 5 stars Good for the clueless....
When I first saw this book, I was excited with this "novel" approach. My friend said it was good, so I started reading.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Using this book I passed the CBEST without any problems, some of the problems on the CBEST were exactly like the ones in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is way out of date. It no longer applies to CBEST
I took the CBEST on June 17, 2006 and I can tell you that after vigorously reading and absorbing all that I could from this book Cracking the CBEST Ed. 2 (I studied it for about 4 weeks), that the information is FAR out of date. The current CBEST has far more complex math problems and critical analysis questions, and the POE (Process of Elimination) explained by the author is simply not applicable to any significant degree to helping you with this test. The answers (A through E) examples given in the book do not come even CLOSE to the actually level of difficulty I encountered in trying to eliminate possibly incorrect answers.
5-0 out of 5 stars best test preparation book on CBEST !
To get the most of your time and money while preparing for your cbest, this is the book you need to have! Its written in a clear language, concise, and gives in depth knowledge for what you are looking for.writing part, maths part and the reading part , you get a strategy to solve all the parts , its difficulty level is the same as the CBEST.. no need to lok for another books out there. But if you want more practice test then i would definely recommend the Cilffs, it has 4 practice tests.. so you get a picture where you stand. Good luck for your CBEST. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It would be funny if it weren't so sad
Probably the most (although certainly not the only) ludicrous part of this book is the entry on Caroline Higgins, a professor at Earlham College.Horowitz objects to Higgins because she teaches a course on peace activism -- a course taken by students in the Peace and Global Studies program, at a Quaker college. It seems odd, to say the least, for a supposed champion of religious freedom to object to people at a Quaker school voluntarily enrolling in classes devoted to a central Quaker value. That Horowitz resorted to including such a weak objection, and one involving such a tiny private college, shows that he really must have been stretching to get his list to 101.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this before choosing a college for your kid
David Horowitz started out as a hippie and like Cartman, I wanted to kick him in the nuts. He eventually figured out that life is very much NOT like the commune and straightened out. It has been said that the difference between a liberal and a conservative is a job and the job that David Horowitz has taken upon himself is that of defender of the faith. He sees that the Hippie-holdover crowd has now moved into the system to bend it to their vision as they were unsuccessful influencing it from the outside. Just as the liberals have had little success with legislation-based change, they have instigated change by judicial fiat and litigation-imposed law, completely bypassing the legislature and the people's will.
1-0 out of 5 stars Be proud of making the Horowitz list
I normally do not want to say anything negative about an opinionated book, because, to me, it is okey for a book to be biased with conservative political agendas. But it is entirely unacceptable when a book intentionally distorts facts and smears the reputation of many leading academics. David Horowitz's book falls into the latter category. Let me use just one example. While Horowitz is ranting against zoologist David Barash (Univ. of Washington), who, Horowitz claims, has no credential to write a book about peace. One has to ask: What is the credential to write such a book? Must peace be studied only by certain professionals narrowly trained in political science? Remember, when the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in the all-out nuclear arms race, mathematicians such as John von Neumann made a great strategic contribution to prevent the doomsday scenario from becoming reality for Americans. If Barash is discredited for being a zoologist originally, can we discredit Newton as a mathematician just because he was a physicist? Can we discredit Goethe as a biologist just because he was a poet? Can we discredit Da Vinci as an achieved scientist/inventor because he was a painter? There have been just too many learned people who are successful in several disciplines. Barash, as an expert in zoology, has been working on cooperation from an evolutionary perspective. His personal dedication to world peace by seeking a new solution from the angle of game theory is particularly admirable. His new book about game theory is a solid piece of evidence demonstrating that he is more than qualified to write a book about peace. If such a person is considered to be dangerous, who is safe? Horowitz simply does not have an open mind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a major work on education in our time by one of the great teachers
I have known Bill Chace since I was a freshman in his English class, so I am hardly objective. But I still can see with a clear eye that this is a great book. It helps us understand what education is about in our culture. What he says about the threats to liberal arts education from fundraising, athletics, tech transfer, careerism, and pressure to make all research applied and goal oriented should be read by anyone who claims to be an educated American with a care about our culture. The book moves effortlessly through his life, propelled by humor and strange incident, from his own funny and poignant undergraduate days, to his liberal bewilderment at Berkeley, to his experience of racism in the South of the 1960's, to his days teaching at Stanford, and then on to his presidencies at Wesleyan and Emory.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Its Kind
A disarmingly brave and revealing academic autobiography by a man whose peripatetic career on five college campuses (two where he was President) uniquely qualifies him as an observer of the academic scene. William Chace tells us at the outset, "[g]iven my experience, none of the rooms where the work of a college or university occurs is now a secret to me." True and unsurprising. What astonishes is that Chace actually invites his reader into those rooms where we observe, under the firm hand of his fine prose, the absurdities, the evasions and self-deceits, and the triumphs of courage that make up the variegated texture of modern American university life.
5-0 out of 5 stars An insider's view of Higher Education
This charming and insightful educational memoir manages to tell us more about what's happening in higher education than could a truckload of educational studies. And Chace does it simply by telling his story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thesis and Dissertation Support
Dr. Roberts seems to know exactly what to say to the graduate student who is about to commence a journey which can may make or break an individual. She write with candor and integrity of what to expect and what to be cautious about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I have looked at quite a few dissertation books and this is the best one I have seen so far.The book provides practical advice that is encouraging but also gives the student a swift kick in the [...] to get the process completed.I like that the first two chapters provide some motivational information about the habits and personality resolutions one needs to make to complete the dissertation process.
5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with helpful general suggestions and specific tips
Nearly half of all doctoral students complete their course work but not the necessary final step of composing their dissertations. The Dissertation Journey is a no-nonsense guide by Carol M. Roberts to avoiding procrastination, wasted effort, and confusion; it outlines practical, step-by-step guidelines from conceiving a topic to publishing its results. Packed with both helpful general suggestions and specific tips, tricks, and techniques tailored to the needs of doctoral students, The Dissertation Journey includes checklists, sample forms, time management advice, the latest insights to making use of technology, recommendations for support groups, lists of resources for further inquiry, and much more. The Dissertation Journey is especially recommended reading for anyone approaching or hard at work on their own dissertation.

This comic strip is hillarious. If you liked Dilbert, you'll like this one too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sigh, the life of a grad student
You think you have unique problems in grad school. Then I read PhD comics and realized that ALL grad students have the same problems.Even though you can go for DAYS not talking to another human (professors don't count!), Cham describes our lives accurately!:)It's a perfect gift!

4-0 out of 5 stars PhD Life, sad but true!
You may wonder what a PhD student does in his/her life... well, as Cham says so evidently, he/she procrastinates. Often. Life in PhD is not that different from the real doctoral life (with some precautions), if you ever want to spend some time in a funny reading (or just procrastinate some real work) that's a good way of doing this. During the reading you will notice how the characters will be more and more refined as time goes on. The second book is a must-have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
This is a great guide that I recommend to all of you who are looking for scholarships. Check this out thoroughly, and if you feel you're up to the total scholarship plus being paid for training that West Point offers, I recommend that you then go on to read "West Point: Character Leadership Education..." by Norman Thomas Remick to understand the importance of this college that is the best kept secret and the one that everyone has a good chance of getting into. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rah!Rah!Rah!
As a longtime fan of Peril's -- from her absolutely excellent 'zine "Mystery Date" to her monthly "Museum of Femorabilia" column in BUST Magazine to her first book "Pink Think" -- I could not wait to get my hands on her latest book, "College Girls."In fact, I pre-ordered it on Amazon when I had first heard about it.And it did not disappoint.Full of facts, history, and yes -- a "we've come a long way, baby" feeling, but written in an engaging, accessible way that kept me going from the first page to the last, never feeling I was mired down in sermonizing.Peril's wit and superior knowledge (and what a reference library from which she culls!) takes us through history, with lots of fantastic anecdotes along the way.She tackles the serious (ie the first female scholars, racism, in loco parentis) and the fun (fashion, spreads, and time honored traditions). The well-chosen pictures that accompany the text are marvelous, too.It made me realize how lucky I was to be a college girl because of all the women who paved the way for me, and grateful because Peril wrote it all down.Every "sweet girl graduate" I know -- whether they are graduating from middle or high school, college, or did so long ago -- will be getting this book from me.Highly, highly rtecommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super fun read
Funny! All the girls on my Christmas list will be getting this book. There are a ton of important, mind-boggling, and otherwise forgotten women's history stories in it, but without the grim voice we're all so used to in feminist writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A RIVETING ROMP
Lynn Peril has done it again! Just as she did with her first book, PINK THINK, she's wrangled tons of research, thousands of facts, and hundreds of personal anecdotes into aconcise and well-written whole. Tackling this immense topic- the history of women in college and popular culture'sreaction to it -Peril makes the varsity team and wins the pennant for a facinating and funny read! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well researched look into admissions, selections, and exclusion at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.
Karabel has created a massive tome of information surrounding the history of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton since the early 1900s. His account is very well researched and provides ample documentation to support his arguments and findings.
5-0 out of 5 stars 6 stars, absolutely stellar!
I was absolutely riveted to this book for 3 weeks.I read every single one of those footnotes that was more than a bibliographical entry, as well. Why?Because Jerome Karabel has taken a fairly esoteric subject and made it interesting, important, revealing, "juicy" and downright enjoyable.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good editor would make this book even better
A skilled editor could have turned this good book into a great one.Given its narrow topic, it could easily be cut in half and as a result, be more effective in conveying its message.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Insights into How Race Gets Constructed by Schools
Race in the Schoolyard adds a new dimension to the literature on race and schooling. It examines how race is understood, produced, reproduced and contested by students, teachers and parents. It provides rich description and profound analysis of the dynamics of race in elementary schools. Its explanations of how race is constructed and dealt with at schools incorporates the examination of micro processes such as teacher practices and macro processes such as residential segregation. It makes a strong statement about how racial categorization is imbued in everyday life at school and even in the most minute or "insignificant" details of school. The book shows how racial categorization leads to behavior toward others that influence their educational opportunities.5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary book on race and contemporary schooling
This book is truly amazing. It deals with a controversial topic in a careful but thought-provoking manner.Having taught in urban and suburban schools for twenty years I can relate to many of the stories that she tells about the inability of teachers, school administrators, and parents to deal effectively with the elephant in the room, race.As she points out in her conclusion we as teachers and Americans cannot "merely close our eyes and try by sheer force of imagination to will ourselves into a color-blind world." In this very readable and well-written book the author reminds us that as teachers we owe it to our students (not just our black and hispanic students) to help them understand how race matters. It is only through direct and honest dialogue that our students will be better prepared to make sure race matters less in the future. ...
