The essays are very interesting to read even if you're not applying for college!
I bought this book because I tutor English off and on and I was thinking of expanding my tutoring to help high school students write their college essays. I saw this on sale at my local Borders and I thought, well why not? It would give me some samples to show students and help me to focus on certain essentials that make a good essay.
Still the best
The second edition is much better than the first. The new essays are more timely and the critiques are very insightful. Any high school student can benefit from reading this book and learning different writing techniques and tones for both College essays and school papers.

Brilliant Brilliant Book
College essays are so important. They allow you to frame your application, and tie all your disparate achievements together to form a coherent application. I would go so far as to say that the first edition of this book single-handedly got me into Harvard. And the second edition is even better! There are new essays, a more diverse range, and the commentary on the essays is lengthier and more insightful. I especially liked the new essay by Harrison Greenbaum about magic. A book every teacher should read
Do you love to teach but hate the grading process?That's where I was when I picked up this book.Very practically written, "EffectiveGrading" shows you how to choose the proper grading model for a class,how to motivate students through properly communicating your gradingsystem, and how to structure your assignments to increase student learning. Excellent resource for college teachers
I admit I was skeptical when I started this book--so many pedagogically oriented texts seem to sacrifice content and standards for "feel-good" solutions to education. However, I have found thisbook to offer excellent suggestions for every aspect of structuring classesto teach and evaluate what you most want your students to learn. In mycollege English classes, I've used variations of Primary Trait Analyses andGateway Criteria and they have made a big difference in the levels ofthinking and writing in my own students. Giving students specificguidelines allows them to focus on what's important about the assignment,set their priorities appropriately, and makes things much easier for mewhen the time comes for grading. Unbelievably Good for an SAT Study Book
I actually bought The Mayan Mission not knowing that it was the second book in the series (see my review there).Then I read this one just for fun.Dr. Chapman did a great job mixing a hip novel (cover) with an excellent word study program.I highly recommend both books.

My sister gave me this
This book is very, very good. My sister is totally into poetry and I'm not but she read this book the Marino Mission, and totally dug it, and Im never reading her stuff, but this was great!A teen romance, but with better writing than what's normal, and definitely NOT BORING.Although it's about a very cute guy hooking up with the heroine in the book. it's really a quite good because its got great adventure and a * thrilling * story.I'm in 9th grade but my sister is in 11th and gets "A"s where I do not, but I learned so much from this book, many new words, because of the notes at the bottom.But mainly I loved the story, I Loved it! ... A very useful guide!
I wish I had had this book when I was applying to college way back when! Matthews has done her homework and written by very well-researched book. Love the title!

Refreshing, hype-free "reality therapy" -- a life saver
This book breaks away from the pack by combining practical, hype-free admissions advice with a refreshing dose of reality therapy.In addition to soup-to-nuts application guidance, the book offers parents advice for preventing the college admissions process from straining our relationship with our kids (I strongly suggest reading this book with your college-bound daughter or son). Good if you have a bunch of smart kids
It might be because I am teaching middle school journalism but I found the worksheets in this book to be pretty high end.Although I do recomend the book for survival I would recomend Judith Ann Isaacs books on Secondary School Journalism if you want to excell.The only problem is this other book is really hard to find.

The only book of its kind
Having been a high school newspaper adviser (notice, "adviser" and not "advisor"?) for 8 years, I am like the other reviewer who wishes this book would have been available much earlier. As it is, my first year of teaching in 1993 included four preps: English 10 Honors, English 9, newspaper, and yearbook. (Anybody want to say "Year of Insanity"?) While I did survive, I struggled that year because the resources for publication advisers are very few. Starting almost from scratch and given very little in support, I ended up putting together my own bound journalism resource book, which is similar in many ways to Osborn's work. But the "Survival Guide" I bought last year is still worthwhile for me to have on hand because it has a number of "cool" sheets that can be photocopied. (Kudos for the wire spine that make turning pages and laying them on the photocopier simple!) Only those who have advised high school publications can fully appreciate the words of wisdom Osborn has because she has obviously been there, done that. Every principal should order a copy for the school's journalism teacher. I certainly plan on utilizing mine in the years to come.

A Great Practical Guide
This is a practical guide for contemporary students who are entering the work force or moving up in their careers and who can use a basic understanding of modern psychological theory to guide interpersonal behaviors for greater success. It describes the overall perspective modern psychological theory provides. There is some historical presentation of post-Kantian psychological schools and personality theories but above all these are presented with an aim to guide behavior in ways most likely to lead to success. Sections focus on work-related attitudes, problem solving including group problem solving and using psychological theory to improve communication. This book helps students understand how contemporary theory enables greater autonomy through understanding how motivation can be controlled by others allowing individuals more control over their own motivation. buffoonish paranoid rant that belongs in everyone's grocery cart
Anthony Sutton did the world a big favor with this book, exposing the juvenile poppycock that passes for "scholarly analysis" of the diabolical "New World Order" centered around the mysterious Skull and Bones society. One must suspect that Mr. Sutton spent tap night all alone in his dorm room nursing a warm Michelob.
Kerry vs. Bush the Fake Election Contest
This book is the history of the people who are currenty running the world. They are basically wealthy businessmen who belong to this elite Yale fraternity. They workied with Hitler against the Allies.They play by their own rules and use the CIA. The brotherhood of the bonesmen is sacred above all else. So in 2004, what did we have? Two bonesmen from elite Yale families. That may explain Mr. Kerry's lack of effort in fighting the election fraud. Read the book and you will be less surprised when the country breaks out in civil war between the classes.

Not so sure the high price is justified.
To quote the "official" reviewer, "She has experience teaching at the elementary, middle, high school and adult levels." Not sure if that means the author was a really good teacher (seems she moved around a lot) or not.
Absolute Required Resource
I took this course as a part of staff development offered by GMU. This book is so much better than the one I learned from in college.There is so much more offered to the teacher in a very easy to follow format.There are plenty of examples at every grade level to satisfy anyone.I wouldn't be without this book.Thanks to Ms. Richardson,et al. for writing it and thanks to my school district for offering it.This book will stay with me forever.If you are having reading problems in your class then get this book and quit pulling your hair out.

Very Effective
As an assistant principal, I have been witness to the positive effects of the strategies in this book, both for teaschers and students.The strategies are practical and more importantly they work. This is an excellent and comprehensive guide to tech writing
This book is an excellent guide to technical writing. It provides clear, organized recommendations that are supported by research. It provides practical advice for writers in situations ranging from writing reports toreviewing colleagues work to creating web pages and writing email. This is one of the few rhetoric's that deals exclusively with how to think and write analytically. It is very methodical and it gives younger students concrete tools that they can use.
