3-0 out of 5 stars An okay book . . .
if you really need it.Personally, I thought some of the scenarios were more likely to have occured during the high school years than during college. For instance, the one in which the girl in college becomes jealous of her single mother's time and attention when the mother starts dating.I would expect someone who is considered mature enough to go off to college to be mature enough to handle the fact that mom has a love life.As for the sections devoted to parents who harrass the university faculty/staff on behalf of their kids - surely these folks are aberrations? When she was in HS, I sometimes intervened in situations but over the last three years, my daughter has grown into a mature, poised and intelligent young woman and as such I expect her to handle these things on her own.I would never dream of intervening in an academic situation on her behalf now. It's frankly none of my business.

4-0 out of 5 stars From a College Faculty Member
Faculty, administrators, and staff all over the country have experienced growing problems with the "Net" or "Echo Boomer" generation, aged 17-24 years old.Poor work habits, a weak work ethic, an exaggerated sense of entitlement, disrespectful and destructive behavior in the classroom, and lack of responsbility plague American college classrooms because of this generation. It is not truly new; the addition of parents who cling, refuse to take responsbilitiy themselves, and are frequently deluded into believing that "baby Einstein" deserves nothing less than a Nobel Prize simply for coming to class--this is the dimension that is new.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent morale support
I found this book to be a great resource dealing with sending our first child off to college. It was helpful knowing his uncharacteristic behavior was normal, and comforting to know other parents have experienced the same.I was surprised to find not only behaviors explained, but great advise regarding the financial puzzles new to first time college parents. This book is a must for parents of college-bond children! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not funny. Not workable.
This guy is really lost. Perhaps he is funny in person, but his book leaves quite a bit to be desired. He has delusions of mediocrity. Nothing in the book is ground breaking or even original. Some of his great ideas come from things like "keep them interested with a hook." This idea he keeps repeating over and over...ad naseum. Don't waste you time or energy on this. Honestly, I can't think of anyone who would be able to use anything in here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that has hands on practical knowledge to pass on.
I have been teaching my son, and trying to figure out just how the information is suppose to get in and this book was the lightbulb. After reading this book I thought I would try some of the ideas with teaching him spelling and other subjects.I was not expecting results, wow was I surprised! He has just taken off like a rocket. He can't get enough. He finally says that the subject matter makes sense to him and it is truly just the way in which it was being presented to him.I am a believer.I have a right brained child!

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher can still learn
Yes, a teacher can still learn - grow - and become even moresuccessful!Thank you Jeffrey Freed for opening my eyes (I already knew there were different ways to reach children, but now I have something to share in writing)! This book has wonderful ideas on how to teach those students who just don't "get" the methods we are using. Is something wrong with these students? No, however, there is something wrong with the way we are teaching!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful
While I don't agree with all of the author's ideas, I found the book very interesting and read it quickly. The best thing about the book is that it looks at ADD children in a very positive light and highlights their unique abilities. It is targeted for a certain type of child, however. My daughter fit about 85% of the author's criteria and I found it not only helpful, but hopeful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone considering to become a doctor
This book was great, but most of it was common sense knowlege. I had wished it had gone into more detail about medical shool etc...The ending of the book sort of just dropped off, I kind of expected more. But it was a real eye opener, and it showsthat as long as you put your mind to something you can be anything you want to. A great self motivator!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good only if your just starting your research
I found this book pretty superficial. It includes a lot of common sense ancedotes that, if you've done much research at all, will sound very repetitive.5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book

2-0 out of 5 stars Obviously
I am a little shocked at the positive reviews that this book has received. It was on this basis that I decided to get the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars To the point and full of useful info you otherwise might not think of.
I'm a new Ph.D. student, and I was strongly encouraged to read this book by a professor I had as an undergrad. It was worth it.Read it in one afternoon, but felt like I had gained 25 years worth of wisdom. It talks about the non-technical aspects of how to succeed after obtaining a Ph.D. in the sciences--conference talks, advisor choices, road to tenure, paper publishing, interviewing, etc.Much of the advice he gives was on topics I never considered, and it opened my eyes to how (as the title says) simply obtaining a Ph.D will not be enough to ensure a successful career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thinking of a Ph.D ?
This is a good guide to life in research science, it makes the reader think through their options in a realistic manner. It pokes holes in the idea that all you need to do is be enthusiastic to succeed. Definitely worth your while reading the first few chapters before taking on a PhD in Science, as the supervisor and project you choose will have a large affect on your success!! Even if you have started your research work later chapters will give a good perspective on issues for your future in academia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Anyone Thinking About Attending College
I own this book and I also had the honor of attending a lecture Donald Asher gave in Chicago. This book is for all of students out there who are un-conventional... perfect also for the ones out there who are thinking about going to a non-ivy league school.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not your average college guide

4-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars - decent introduction as long as other texts are consulted as well.
"A History of American Higher Education" is a nice introduction into the topic of college history. However, it is most definately not definitive. Any reader would benefit from consulting other texts (which I will list at the end of this review). The book does focus heavily on the ivy league schools; but, for good reason because much of the early developing history of higher education happens at these schools (since they were the first schools).
5-0 out of 5 stars definitive study
No question, this study will rank with Frederick Rudolph's The American College and University and Laurence Veysey's The Emergence of the American University as a classic in its field. The scholarship is profound and the narrative lively and original.

3-0 out of 5 stars Appreciate
I can appreciate the work put into the book.I took the book for it's writing style to give me a how to guide and what not to do.The book is so dense that it could not cover everything. The author was left to decide what was important and the information that is important to him is not important to me.The book was a requirement for a course so we could get background information of higher ed and I can definitely appreciate it's purpose. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great resource
I have looked at several editions of this book over the past few years and am always impressed by the amount of information it provides. This book does a great job of providing information on universities by state and by focus of study. It gives plenty of information to help potential graduate students make more informed choices. My only complaint is a small one. I would prefer if they added a way to look up specific degrees. Right now you have to look up each school to see the degrees or look it up by focus. If you wanted to earn an EdD for example, you would have to look through every school or subject listed. Not a big deal, but my only suggestion for improving this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
This is a great guide to finding graduate schools in Psychology. It helped me in my master's and I hope it helps with going to my PhD.

5-0 out of 5 stars K&W Guide to Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities, 8tH Edition
I found the book to be very helpful in eliminating the schools that we were looking at without the need to visit. And also naming schools never even considered,
1-0 out of 5 stars This book is outdated and inaccurate
Because all public colleges and universities have to make reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities (i.e. students who can perform the college work with minor adjustments), these guides are a waste of time, paper, and ink.
