5-0 out of 5 stars By far the BEST book for CISSP certification
I have been teaching the CISSP certification for IT Mentor for the last 5 years. This is the book I use for all of my students.I must say, this is the best book you can buy.I have over 20 CISSP books in my library, but I always recommend this one.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, though some turn offs
The book has a good coverage on most of the topics. I think if you already have Telecom and Crypto background, you'll be fine with this book, as those don't seem to be done well enough though they are important fot the exam.
4-0 out of 5 stars How to study and pass the CISSP.
Three weeks after I took the CISSP exam, I received an email telling me I had passed. I came out of the exam fairly confident I'd pass but one can never be too sure with the CISSP - the questions are quite ambiguous and quite often you are making an educated guess in picking out what you think is the best among the 2 choices you have narrowed down to. It has often been said that the CISSP is an exam that is an inch deep and a mile wide. You'd be lucky if you use more than half of what you studied for this exam. I am a software engineer and I know I will never have to choose which fire extinguisher to use for which kind of fire, unless I am actually struck in one!

4-0 out of 5 stars For the Instructional Designer
We used this book in my design class when I was earning a masters in training. It is still on my bookshelf. It is critical not only for instructional designers, but for managers who may know little or nothing about training but make training decisions.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Evergreen for Good Reason
This rock-solid text belongs front-and-center on your bookshelf if you're an instructional designer, trainer, training manager, or anyone else like that.Dick & the Careys present a simple yet thorough approach to eliciting, understanding, documenting, prioritizing, and reaching learning goals that deliver or exceed expected value.Better still, the book is designed with its own methods in mind, giving thoughtful and perceptive readers a living demonstration of these methods' usefulness. The clear, orderly, crisply-written text and comprehensive, able summaries make quick brush-ups and "reminder reads" a simple and effective task. The Systematic Design of Instruction is a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Instructional Design Model
This text book describes the Dick & Carey System Approach Model for the design of instruction. This Instructional Design model is one of the better-known systems used in the field of Instructional Technology, and is included as part of the curriculum of many undergraduate and graduate programs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for teachers new to this technology!
Will's book is a great resource for teachers who are interested in introducing blogs etc. into the classroom but who may be intimidated by the technology. His book is easy to read and understand for those of us who are not as technologically advanced as of yet. I believe Will's book will be one of the greatest resources in my classroom in September. I would recommend this book to any teacher who does not want to be left behind by his/her students as technology advances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step by Step Book for Beginners
Will Richardson displays great pedagogical style in walking the reader through the steps of seemingly complicated technological tasks. He makes learning about great tech tools for the classroom like blogs, wikis, and rss easy and exciting. He not only tells how to set them up but various ways to use them in the classroom.I had been searching for such a text and now that I've found it, I plan to use it as the main text for my grad student course about educational uses of the Internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will's book
We just finished a 3 day conference with Will for HS reform. My staff just loved the book and the conference.I cannot understand how anyone could rate the book low but everyone has an opinion. We plan to order for staff this fall. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid technology book that is not outdated when published
Many technology books are outdated by the time they are published. I am pleased to say that this book methodically moves through effective instruction and then how to use technology to aid it. I will be using this book as a reference for some time to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technology presented with clarity
Pay no attention to one gentleman's "Apple Pie" comment about the step-by-step instructions included in this book. After all, not everyone is as technologically adept as he may be. If you have already mastered such technology, then this material is possibly too basic for you. But for the rest of us, one of the major benefits of this book is indeed the fact that the instructions have been so clearly presented!
2-0 out of 5 stars Light and introductory with the scent of apple pie
I wasn't impressed with this book for two separate reasons.Firstly, the production standard struck me as almost 1960s' in style - black and white photos (nice 'grainy' look), big bulky monitors and a general aged format. It is peculiar I agree, but the book looks like it was written at least 30 if not 40 years ago.The second set of quibbles I have with the text is that it presume the reader is almost completely ignorant of any kind of presentation technology. This assumption may have been acceptable several decades ago but the universality of TV seriously undermines its value.Television is constantly exposting the public to new technologies. For instance, in the text there is a piece with graphic devoted to how to load a slide projector. How relevant is that to today's classroom? Moreover, any decent bit of kit comes with instructions.I accept that the authors wish to do a thorough hand holding with the reader, but the book assume too little exposure to technology which renders it advice mediocre in places. Possibly it should be retitled Instructional Media Technology for Complete Dummies. The bits on the web are small (literally bits) which is not a good sign.Overall, the book was lightweight - possibly I am being unfair as I am not looking for the technology it covers, but forreview of current and future developments. In any event I regret buying the book as it doesn't fit my needs and I didn't like its presentation style. It is a tired book, more like jaded, that does not mesh well with the style culture of modern multimedia technology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Teachers
This book is a great resource for any teacher who would like to incorporate technology into the classroom. It not only gives useful information about each type of technology, but it also offers great ideas on how to integrate the specific technolgies into your lesson plans. This book is engaing, interesting and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate Use of Technology is the Knowledge Challenge
A very worthy book.In the technology realm, people are the greatest challenge, in maximizing best use of technology, and in securing its appropriate use.I'm David Scott, author of I.T. Wars: Managing the Business-Technology Weave in the New Millennium. There are many parallels between the educational challenges and business challenges in the coming years, in aligning technology to the business at-hand.Technology is now a foundational underpinning to everything, and dependencies and vulnerabilities are best understood through early and ongoingeducation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book is great at providing ideas to help teachers integrate Technology into their classrooms focused around the content areas. There are also a wide variety of computer software programs mentioned in the book. The programs can be helpful for both teachers and students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work on the Science of Learning
This is one of the best books I have read on how students learn. Mayer's cognitive model, while limited to visual and auditory channels, provides a wealth of possibilities for maximizing the retention and understanding of information by students. Mayer practices what he preaches and writes a compelling, easy-to-understanding, summary of his ten years of research on the subject. The most important part of the book is that Mayer backs up his statements with data from the classroom. I can think of no other book that can make that claim. Like another reviewer said, if it doesn't change the way you teach or think about teaching, it should!

5-0 out of 5 stars Will Change Your Teaching!
This is a fantastic book!It has a very nice discussion and a summary of the relevant research documenting that students learn best with multimedia presentations (pictures and words). The research results and guidelines for designing figures and computer-based materials will change the way you teach forever, or at least should! As a University Geology Professor, this book has truely been an inspiration to my teaching and writing. The only drawback is that it is a little repetitive, but not enough to detract from the great message contained within.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good research and a good read
This is a very well presented description of Mayer's research on whether people learn betterusing multimedia (as opposed to just reading text). He describes the tests he and colleagues have performed to see how much learners are able to remember (retention) and how much learned information they can apply to new situations (transfer), and presents the results in manner that is relatively easy to understand (you have to know a little something about statistics, but not too much). The number of subjects tested is small, and Mayer is sure to point that out - but the basic research should lay groundwork for others to conduct similar tests on larger groups. The design principles Mayer puts forth (e.g. "contiguity") are very much in keeping with the general principles of good visual design (esposed by design notables such as Robin Williams (not the actor)). It's both a good read and good research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of it's subject
I am an instructional designer of online learning and in an effort to implement discussions in the courses I create, I ordered four books on discussion-based online learning. This book was by far the most comprehensive, balanced, and useful book of the four. While reading the book, I was immediately able to implement the strategies outlined in the book, and justify my reasons for implementing groups/discussions to the college instructors teaching the courses I create. I think that this book is valuable to anyone creating and supporting online learning: instructors, professors, instructional designers, trainers, and training managers. I even copied several pages of the book that justify online learning as a whole for my director.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Beyond the Technology to Constructivist Learning
Dr. Bender offers a well balanced view of online discussion as a teaching tool in asynchronous education. Clear, concise, practical and well documented concepts and applications fill this easily read textbook. The last section of the book provides a wonderful overview of the hot buttons on assessment in the online environment.Regardless of whether you are already implementing online discussion or if you are just considering online discussion as a new tool to add to your arsenal, you will find helpful insight in this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
I found the book to be a good read and had a lot of interesting things to say and good examples of activities for online participants.
5-0 out of 5 stars a useful guide for distance learning
This book is ideal for the professor or instructor who is providing instruction through distance learning. For online instruction to be successful, students cannot just sit and absorb content passively. The online professor/instructor must encourage an engaged learning environment, which is described by the authors as an environment based on constructivist principles and problems-based learning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide :)
This book is appropriate to me. I am relatively new to the online learning enviroment and at last I found individual and collaborative activities focused on constructivism and problem-base learning. This activities are a wonderful guide to move learners gradually from traditional rol until they become more self directed. Many books on the topic of online instruction offer innovation and they only present lecture-based approach. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
I bought this book for an advanced marketing class in my MBA program. The authors explain in detail the elementary topics which are covered in basic marketing class. For e.g. they talk in detail about segmentation, but they fail to explain thoroughly clustering and factor analysis. The tutorial also lacks depth and does not interpret the numbers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Might as well buy the RHCE book by jang (4th edition)
I bought the RHCE book (jang 4th edition) and used it to study for the RHCE exam. Because the exam encompasses both the RHCT abd RHCE exam, i thought i could use the RHCT book as a way to refine skills geared strictly towards just the RHCT portion of the exam. This book really is just a subset (cut and paste) of the RHCE book from jang, with a very few changes. You are better off just getting the RHCE book by jang and using it to study for both the RHCT and RHCE. The skills you learn, although not super in depth, will force you to learn or relearn key concepts that will potentially be on the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sound model
This book presents the NteQ (iNtegrating Technology for inQuiry)model for integrating computers into the K-12 classroom (although most examples seem to come from grades 5-6).The model, which involves specifying objectives, specifying the problem, manipulating the data, presenting the results, and assessment, is very sound and effective. The organization of the book is very clear, and it would make a great choice for a graduate or upper level undergraduate education text, or even a self-study text. There are no study questions, but each chapter closes with a list of references and/or resources that will help readers find more information about the covered topics.I found the first 6 chapters, about general topics concerning integrating computers into the classroom, most useful. The remaining chapters each focus on how a particular type of application (such as word processing) can be integrated into classroom teaching. These chapters may contain some ideas for beginners, but they seemed a little basic relative to the depth of information in the earlier chapters.

Review of Statistics Hacks by Bruce Frey
5-0 out of 5 stars Believe it or not, statistics rocks
Most people really hate statistics, although I'm not sure why.In college, I enjoyed the subject so much, that I earned an advanced degree in it.With that begin said, I'm always a bit leery of non-academic statistics books. Those that I have seen in the past generally have poor science or are more boring than a Ph.D. candidate's dissertation.Imagine my surprise when I read this book and found it both fun to read and scientifically correct!
4-0 out of 5 stars Practical statistics with a helping of humor...
Math is one of those subjects that I *really* had to work at in school.Didn't come intuitively, and I "endured" more than "enjoyed".Statistics Hacks - Tips & Tools for Measuring the World and Beating the Odds by Bruce Frey is probably as close as I'm going to come to reading a "math"-related book these days, but I actually enjoyed this one...

5-0 out of 5 stars Kick-Start Use of Office Software for Teaching
Aimed primarily at high school teachers or those teaching foundation college/university courses- this text avoids theory, focusing on specific tools (e.g. spreadsheet, web, word processor) and what can be done with them in a classroom setting. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Crash Course on Web-Based Training
If you are new to web-based training, stepping into a new web-based instructional design position, have been teaching or developing web-based training but suspect that there is a better way to do it, or you simply want to establish a solid foundation in building engaging online learning envrionments, this book must be on your shelf.I am a higher education instructional design consultant and I find this book to be an excellent ongoing resource. Not only is it full of specific and practical tips, but the content is organized into dozens of useful tables and charts.Chapter 6, "Activate Learning" is an especially useful chapter, providing lists of potential learning activities and explaining some of the reasons to choose one learning activity over another.
3-0 out of 5 stars Long on tips. Weak on theory.
This book contains a collection of web design tips which are in the main useful but not earth shattering.Where the book fell down, for me at least, was in the area of theory. It is weak here, and that can be a major problem if you want to conduct a scientific evaluation of the work using the umpteen heuristics suggested by the author.I doubt that there is enough information in the text to adequately help one frame an evaluation of a course, let alone put one together.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent e-learning overview
I am a corporate trainer who seeks to convert much of his highly successful classroom-based training to the Web.This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for and met my very demanding criteria for a 'how-to' book.Read more
