4-0 out of 5 stars Future Historians order today!
It is an abysmal shame that so many people will never read this book because of the misconceptions they have been fed about Senator Jesse Helms. The bogeyman hiding under the liberal bed wears Senator Helms' distinctive owlish glasses and speaks with a soothing drawl. That image was created by liberals as they struggled desperately and in vain to smear a thoroughly honest and decent man through five (count `em) election campaigns.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jesse Helms explains himself
The only other political figure as divisive as former Senator Jesse Helms is former President Bill Clinton. That's saying something considering the endless number of scandals both big and small that plagued Clinton's presidency. Jesse Helms had no comparable problems during his thirty years in office, but derision and controversy followed him nonetheless. Why? Because the very presence of Helms, an archconservative of the first order, vexed to no end the hopeless liberals in the mainstream media. The primary way journalism hacks dealt with Helms was to not deal with him, i.e. try to ignore his presence in the Senate. When it became absolutely necessary to mention his name, like during the failed William Weld nomination as ambassador to Mexico in which Helms played a major role, the tactic switched to good old-fashioned tar and feathering. The media mavens, barely containing their scornful smirks, heaped derision on the venerable senator from North Carolina. "Obstructionist" and "extremist" were the least harmful labels applied to Helms. We were much more likely to hear insinuations about racism (a favorite smear employed by the left to reframe debates near and dear to their hearts) and hardheaded cold heartedness. The Democrats breathed a collective sigh of relief when Helms retired a few years ago.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Slim" book is a good description
More platitudes, by an author willing to abandon any principles if doing so will inflate his ego.

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so at some parts but an all around good book
Some parts of this book are a little boring but as you get into it you'll find that the senator's thoughts and ideas are interesting. This book was written before his vice-presidential, and presidential campagines so don't expect to hear about them but if you'r interested in knowing what he's really about read this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Must-read book for anyone thinking about political office

1-0 out of 5 stars No Teddy, I'll Be the Designated Driver
When will the media learn that no matter how much you try to dress Ted Kennedy up, he's still the same:a morally bankrupt, lecherous old fart wo's time has passed him by.If there ever were poster children for term limits, its doddering old fools like Teddy.
4-0 out of 5 stars Balanced.
Although the book does contain some factual errors, overall it is nicely written and well researched. Love him or hate him, the senior senator from Massachusetts HAS and CONTINUES to wield signifigant influence overdomestic and international affairs.1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Followup to "The Education of Edward Kennedy"
Hersh's 1972 biography "The Education of Edward Kennedy" is still, after nearly three decades, one of the best Kennedy books out there. "The Shadow President," however, fails to live up to the highstandards Hersh set in his earlier book. While "The ShadowPresident" includes a lively account of the 1994 Kennedy-Romney Senaterace, the rest of the book is dreadfully dull, containing many well-wornanecdotes and familiar tales that have been better recounted elsewhere.Replete with glaring factual errors (Maryland senator Paul Sarbanes isdescribed as representing Delaware, and more strangely, Wyoming's AlanSimpson is referred to a senator from Nevada) which a self-described"Washington insider" like Hersh should not have made. Hershoffers his own highly-speculative and undocumented "insights" asfact, while blasting other authors like Joe McGinniss who have done thesame. His tendency to quote at length anonymous sources identified merelyas "a longtime friend" or "an influential seniorstaffer" is also grating and serves to further degrade a frustratinglyslapdash book. Hersh can and has done better, and the sense one getsreading "The Shadow President" is that this book was quicklyhobbled together to make a few bucks. All in all, a disappointing sequel toa classic work of political reportage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A political science classic
This is one of the best and most valuable political science texts I have ever read - and, as a political science major, self-confessed politics junkie and activist, I've read most of them. Gary Jacobson's research is unmatched and his findings are essential to anyone who wants to get involved in Congressional campaigns. His assessment of the role of money in such campaigns is astounding and discomforting. While the going gets dry at times, overall the book is a good read with very practical applications today.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible on Congressional Elections
Anyone involved in running for a congressional seat, working on a congressional election or just interested in national politics will find this book enormously interesting. It's short. It's down to earth. It's up-to-date.And, it's one of the best on the subject.Professor Jacobson's book features pertinent analysis of national survey data plugged into long-term electoral trends. It covers all you need to know about how to make a run for Congress, calculating your odds and the chances of knocking off an incumbent. It is a unique blend of academic effort and practicality that is continually useful. It is the very best on what to expect in congressional elections for the U.S. House and Senate. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well balanced, factual writing
Being neither a friend nor a foe of Hillary, I was often confused when I would ask detractors why they disliked her so much. They could often not express it.I happened across this book and read it in a very short time. The writing was compelling and kept my interest.Tomasky answered my questions about Hillary and explained how, dispite such overwhelming dislike of her, she was still able to win this election.I found his personal insights into the campaign, from having been present through the entire 18 months, to his antidotes from other reporters and sources to be explanitory and interesting, all the while keeping a balanced view of her and telling both the negative and positive aspects of her and her campaign.I highly recommend this book.It answered quite a few of my questions about this controversial politician.

3-0 out of 5 stars Senator Clinton
Hillary's Turn is predominantly about the 2000 Senate campaign in New York. Most of the focus is on Hillary Clinton, but there is also a lot of information on Rick Lazio, Rudy Giuliani, Al Sharpton, and other notable New York politicians. Even though it is sympathetic to Senator Clinton, the Republican Party in New York gets very even handed treatment. In fact, the most interesting parts of the book are about the inner conflicts of both parties. I would say that the only problem with the book is that it mostly talks about New York City, and not other parts of the state. It is a very well written book, and since the author, a reporter, covered the campaign, he makes some good first hand observations. The reader also gets the feeling that the author sees a possible Clinton vs. Giuliani race in either 2006, for the Senate, or 2008, for the big prize.

1-0 out of 5 stars Love Hillaryor hate her, this book is rancid
With friends like Michael Tomasky, Hillary Rodham Clinton doesn't need enemies---and God knows she has them, as we learn in excruciating detail in another book written by another reporter who should stick to quick, easily edited copy.Read more

Editorial Review

Elizabeth Holtzman rose fast in politics and fell hard. She was elected as a Democrat to Congress at 31 and was a star and a role model for many young women at the 1974 Watergate hearings; but she lost badly in Senate races in 1980 and 1992, and then failed to win re-election as New York City Comptroller in 1994. In those losing battles, Holtzman confronted a great deal of personal vilification. "In the comptroller's race I was often called a 'witch'," she writes. Here Holtzman gives her side of the story of her political career. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping Cool in a Political Inferno
Elizabeth Holtzman's book is a testimony to the irony and intense nature of life in public office. From her initiation as a member of Congress on the Watergate investigating committee to the cauldron of New York City politics, she weaves a fascinating and well documented story of triumphs, mistakes and human drama. An excellent book for the reader interested in the American political system.

5-0 out of 5 stars An great & enjoyable read of a true political giant.
Morris King Udall was one of the great Democrats of the 20th century. After reading this book, you will see why - and you will also regard "Mo" as one of the greatest legislators of the last century.Rep. Udall certainly was one of the most complicated.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding portrait of an important political leader
Every student of U.S. politics or Arizona history should read this book. Carson and Johnson thoroughly and brilliantly chronicle the life of a man who profoundly influenced the course of America in ways that politicians of greater renown never did. The authors reveal how Mo Udall could champion the most liberal causes and yet gain the respect of someone as conservative as Barry Goldwater. Read this book and you'll wonder what turns America might have taken had Udall fulfilled his dream of becoming president.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography of a man all too quickly forgotten
Its amazing how quickly we forget our leaders. After serving 31 years in Congress, running one of the most likeable Presidential campaigns in history, and nearly getting elected majority leader of the U.S. House of Represenatives, Democrat Morris Udall's political career was cruelly and tragically brought to a halt by Parkinson's disease.Once famed as perhaps the wittiest man in Congress (as well as one of the most effective), Udall died seven years after his retirement -- his sterling wit permanently silenced as the disease robbed him of his ability to speak. Most tragically, this man who -- with his brother Stewart -- co-founded both the current conservation movement and America's first Mormon political clan, died a forgotten figure, remembered only by a few political junkies like myself.Fortunately, however, Donald Carson and James Johnson have produced a wonderfully engaging biography of this man that gives us a warts-and-all portrait of a remarkable public servant. While giving ample reason why the man was so beloved, they also don't flinch from revealing why Morris Udall ultimately remained a mystery to even his own family.Unlike other political biographies, this book neither sets out to debunk or canonize Rep. Udall but instead stands as a sharp portrait of a complex man whose public service -- whether you agreed with his liberal politics or not (I certainly don't) -- made this country a better place.Read more
