5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Works
The Basic Bakunin has works that Bakunin did over a short period of time, mostly speaking of the International, but after reading this I can see why it is called the "Basic" Bakunin: all you need to know about Bakunin's views of the State, education, knowledge, work, equality, democracy, freedom, etc, is contained in this 250 page book.5-0 out of 5 stars a clear and concise introduction to Bakunin
I found "The Basic Bakunin" to be an excellent, although somewhat limited, introiduction to the political thought of one the West's more dissident political philosophers.Although admiring Marx as aneconomic/political historian,Bakunin rejected the authority of arevolutionary intelligensia.Cutler adroitly summerizes Bakunin's politicalphilosophy as being thus: The actions of libertarian, anti-authoritarian,syndicalist components of society must be the synthesis of theunderstanding of the mechanics of society and the effectiveness of freewill.Robert Butler has done a remarkable job of condensing Bakunin'sanarchist thought into a clear and concise introduction for neophytes tothe social movement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of breed
This is a great book. The editor obviously loved doing this job. You can see how much time he spent and the translations are fabulous. Even the footnotes are fun to read. I liked the introduction too, and the index isreally comprehensive and useful. Since the only two other Bakuninanthologies in English are rare or out of print, and seem to list at $40and up, this paperback is a steal at this price. Buy this book!:-) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book Lacks Real Solutions
This book appears more to be an alarmist than pointing out a real solution to what the author considers as a growing problem.Since 2001 PATRIOT Act, the main problem civil liberities activists have is monitoring international calls from suspected terrorists. If this is all the problems these people have including the author, other than speculating what might happen, then there is no real problem with the 2001 PATRIOT Act that's going to take the average American's liberities away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rest in Peace Bill of Rights...slain by the Patriot Act
Government response to 'terrorism' is not new; we have previously understood that in 'times of war' civil liberties were suspended (supposedly for the national good). We also know that times of panic (Joe McCarthy) had also prompted otherwise reasonable people to abandon their civil liberties for the now-familiar promise of 'national security'.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but scary to think about, post-9/11 study.
This book gives a frightening look at how post-9/11 paranoia and the aftermath of that horrific event have lead to the diminution of civil liberties in the U.S..The passage of the so-called "Patriot Act(s)" will not only make ethnic groups (particularly Arab/Muslims, given that 9/11 was perpetrated by members of that ethnic group) [a] cause to worry, even Americans may be, if their views don't match the current Administration's views, subject to loss of constitutional rights.[The ACLU would have a field day about this, if the premise of the book is true.]It is an important book to read and should be read by everyone who thinks that their civil liberties are unable to be violated by the government.(Conservatives will call this book nonsense, but most of us [moderates and liberals] will find the book an eye-opening study of overreaction and paranoia, by the government, as a result of 9/11. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a brilliant continuation of wink's material on "The Powers"
This book expounds on Wink's analysis of"Jesus' ethic of nonviolence for today".Specifically dealing with what happens when authoritarian regimes come to an end, and a new "democratic" system emerges. He tackles complex issues such as Domination, Reconciliation, and the role of Apology in the modern political arena. It is a very eloquent and gracious treatment of the subject in a relatively short work (66 pages). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Objective Look at a Very Plausible Idea
Certainly there have been no allegations of George W. Bush having an affair. However, what John Bonifaz is able to do in this explosive book, is detail a strong case for the impeachment and removal of Bush as President for real and tangible Constitutional issues. In fact, it makes the impeachment of Bill Clinton seem trivial and silly. There is no telling how many people have died as a result of the "illegal" war that President Bush started. The conservatives have always prided themslves on being strict constructionists, well, if that is the case, then Bonifaz is really on to something here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Confronting Constitutional Questions
John Bonifaz was part of the legal process in seeking to impeach Bush, confronting critical constitutional issues in that process. In failing to meet the criteria established byelements of the international community, Bush bypass UN approval in his haste for war.1-0 out of 5 stars Love the idea of impeachment, hated this book
Let me start by saying nobody would enjoy the idea of impeachment more than me. But, this book fails to come close to making the case.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At least the second-best book on constitutional theory
This book is so original and carefully thought out that it is more like reading philosophy than a book on constitutional theory, except that Kahn is a much better and more lucid writer than most philosophers.(Kahn hasan odd habit of writing elusively short sentences, and then piling them ontop of one another.)The book is really an intellectual history, showinghow each generation of judges in US history has come to grips in differentand characteristic ways with the problem of applying the Constitution tonew problems. The theme of the book is the illegitimacy of judicialreview, and more precisely of the idea that true self-government can bemade consistent with constitutional governance, in the US or anywhere else. It is a perfect book for curious, intellectually ambitious lawyers and esplaw students to become acquainted with the big questions and big theoriesin constitutional law (at the end of the book, Kahn critiques all the majortheorists). You won't think in the same way about the law after you'vefinished this book, and it is the one of a handful of law books that doesnot read like a few law review essays strung together. The book receivedone or two rave reviews but so far as I know is not read outside the lawworld (say by intellectual historians). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun (?) with Regulation
Cindy Skrzycki's weekly column titled "The Regulators" has captured the attention of readers of the Washington Post for more than a decade, uncovering the power struggles, political intrigue, special interests and legal battles that go on behind the scenes in Washington. Now, her wit and humor help make the seemingly arcane topic of regulation accessible (and even fun) for readers of her new book, The Regulators: Anonymous Power Brokers in American Politics. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessary Reissue
Following the terror attacks of September 11, it seemed only a matter of time until Clinton Rossiter's classic comparative study of emergency powers, Constitutional Dictatorship (1948), would regain prominence in the United States. Rossiter's book a time the best historical resource on emergency powers and despite a flood of commentaries remains the best. Even in the months following the attacks, after a short season of citation by commentators across the American ideological spectrum, bandied about as a guide to crisis the book was soon reissued with a new introduction and a provocative new dust-jacket depicting the burning remnants of the World Trade Center set against an image of the U.S. Constitution, defacing the inscription "We the People." Rossiter's warning that "all uses of emergency powers and all readjustments in the organization of the government" should be "in pursuit of constitutional or legal requirements" resonates today in the open-ended "War on Terror." Indeed, considering the frequency of the exercise of emergency powers around the world, Rossiter's book has remained relevant in the half century since it was first published. Its pioneering methodology of comparative constitutionalism as a framework for studying emergency governance was actually well ahead of its time. The examples Rossiter drew upon have become the classic case studies: the Roman Republic and four modern democracies. Among other things, Rossiter's work is a classic defense of domestic formalism, drawing more often than not on the Republican tradition.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but hard to recommend it.
Next to journal reading, a compilation of personal letters is a good way to really get to know someone. This book is a collection of letters exchanged between Thomas Jefferson and his children & grandchildren over a long period of time. The book starts when the kids are young and he is away on his government duties. We find that times really hasn't changed that much as Jefferson constantly nags them to write him letters. As the kids grow older, they become much more prolific writers. The book becomes most interesting whenever the grandchildren mature and begin to write him during his presidency. In these letters, he shares tips and philosophy on life, economics, and general principles- even though we know he may not have put all of these into practice himself.Read more

The Reynolds book is a text used at the University of North Dakota Space Students graduate program for Space Law. I have found the book a pleasure to read as one who seeks to gain knowledge in this ever-growing niche field of law. Reynolds and Merges address the topic in suffivent detail to educate the reader. The comlexities of space law is emerging in this decade. I suspect that Mr. Reynolds will be compelled to write a new edition before "the decade is out."
