5-0 out of 5 stars The American Accent Guide, 2nd ed.
As a non-native English speaker, I found that the AAG, 2nd edition is a great tool in learning pronunciation and intonation. I try to study and practice one cd a day. Although there are 8 cd's, I wish that the exercises in the grey pages were sounded out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Was not so good as it appears...
This is a good book, but considering its price, I wouldn't buy it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but requires effort
My writing and vocabulary skills are quite developed, however, native speakers can sense the trace of an accent when I speak.

This is a great resource if you want to know how to teach comprehension in grades K-2.As a former teacher of upper grades, I found it very helpful in understanding how the younger children learn.

    5-0 out of 5 stars QRI4
I have been using the QRI3 for many years and was very happy that a new version was out with new stories. There are plenty of new stories in this version. It was nice to give a student something they had not memorized or where not familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical & Professional Product
My wife needed an IRI for a recent course. She reported that this book provides different types of readings as opposed to just the story narrative form. The directions for using the IRI were clear and the typeset on the word lists is sharp. She says she is very pleased with this investment and expect to use it in her classroom in the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Poverty" Misunderstood.
Let me start off by mentioning all the positive elements of this work (of which there are not many). In the beginning, the author shares accurate Census figures about poverty along with insight that it is a relative condition which applies to all races and creeds. She also recommends that educators should teach and strengthen rather than praise and condemn. From here, however, the work slips into the abyss. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Start
I work in a large middle school which hit the 50% level of students in poverty a few years ago. The majority of our poverty students are white, while the number of African-American students is less than 5%.The percent of Hispanic students in poverty in our school/community is growing.Ruby Payne's description of students and families in poverty fits our school to a large degree. Our entire corporation has been exposed to her materials, we've had Ruby as a guest presenter and our entire middle school staff has studied her book. We continue to incorporate much of what her materials recommend. We are having good success with this endeavor, and like anything in education, it is a work in progress.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any...

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed for the CTEL
This text admirably addresses the CTEL exam.Pop for the third edition; it's worth it.And if it were up to me, this book's sections on immigration law, history, and diversity would be required reading for any educator.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource Book
I purchased this book for a college class and it was mostly review from other classes. However, I found the book easy to read and very informative. This single book covered about 4 or 5 other books from different courses. If you are a beginning teacher that wants to be able to teach to all of your students, than this book is a must. This great book covers SDAIE teaching and just other great concepts. If you have never taken a multilinguial course than this is money well spent. If you have had a number of those types of classes, than I would look for a book more catered to what you need. This is book is a great introductory book. Most students that I had in class kept the book as reference material and that says a lot because we use book money to live on until finicial aide comes in, LOL. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Specialist
This is a very helpful book for ESL Kindergarteners!I have all the Words Their Way books and have used them at every grade level in my elementary school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for K-2 teachers.
Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with theblack line masters so you can use the strategies immediately. This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships. It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them. There are old faithfuls such as "It's raining, it's pouring" to new poems that teach phonemic awareness, rhyming, visual discrimination and sight words. My favorite is the alphabet printed in several different fonts so students can learn all the ways 'A' might look. I wish I had this 21 years ago when I started teaching.I use it daily now. ... We used this book in our doctoral level Urban Education class this semester. Very informative.

2-0 out of 5 stars Really difficult to read, but it was a requirement!
Such a difficult book to read.It felt as if the authors had 2 chapters of concrete evidence and then took these 2 chapters and tried to expand them to fill an entire book.I felt as if I was having deja-vu throughout my entire reading of it.Some topics that I thought had been clarified again kept popping up and restasted the same idea in a couple pages worth.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for a touchy topic
I've used this book teaching 10 classes in Multicultural Education for California State University at Hayward. It covers some "hot spots" like gender, special education, race, and social class.I'venever had a student who expressed dislike for the book.It provokesdissent, emotions, and great discussions but maintains a well researchedand professional style.I would recommend it to any professor ofmulticultural education and I eagerly await the 4th edition, coming thisJuly! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Seems great--on paper
This book is one that may seem to have great and ideas--in theory! In practice?Well, that's another thing. There are a number of things I agree with wholeheartedly: think-pair-share, conferencing in which you meet with the child rather than vice versa, opportunities to immediately apply the concepts and strategies of a lesson, time to "debrief"....BUT, my teaching cannot be via a multitude of mini lessons--the scope of what must be covered in a school year does not allow for this.I also felt that the author's approach was a bit "me, me, me" with the children; she recommends the teacher making the summation in order to control time.In this vein she also mentions the importance of student participation yet she wants to strongly control this. When children share, it is good for the whole group to be included rather than just one partner--yes, this takes some time and it is an art to keep things moving smoothly but many ideas can be shared. This is a great opportunity to have children exposed to thinking outside the box or, perhaps, outside their comfort zone. I agree with the author that young children appreciate a routine but to do the same thing day in and day out can encourage the children to begin to perform like automatons. With today's demands for differentiation, this would create a lot of extra work for teachers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for teachers launching Reader's Workshop!
This book is excellent for any teacher who is launching reader's workshop in their classroom.I will be teaching first grade this coming school year and have been reading this book to help me prepare. What I really love about the book is that it gives you a scope and sequence for what units of study you could teach throughout the school year, provides examples of mini-lessons you can teach, as well as being very explicit about what a reader's workshop mini-lesson should look like and what reader's workshop should look like in general.Kathy Collins writes in a way that all teacher can relate and includes some funny anecdotes about her own teaching-this is a must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This was a great and useful book. It helps readers think about how to apply the reading workshop to the clasroom of young children filled with emerging readers. Collins writes in a conversational way with important suggestions and backround. She shares openly and intelligently how to do the work and relays how the plans worked in her classes. Very helpful and readable! ... Read more

Immediate results from the assessments. Not as easy to use as Marie Clay's running Records, but all inclusive. One of those college books you will keep.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sociopolitical?
I found this book to primarily address the issues of eastern seaboard minority studentsrather than the issues faced in the southwestern US. Here in AZ there is a very strong prejudice against Immigrant students of Spanish speaking origin. Did you realize that in most workplaces in AZ we are not allowed to speak in a language other than English to a co-worker? Some paranoid person, usually a transplanted Anglo from out of state thinks we are talking about them. Ms Nieto needs to make her text more of a national treasure by not just focusing on those in the Midwest and Eastern seaboard nothern states. This book is due for an update!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ineffective Approach and Little Practical Advice
I found this book of little use. The major problems created by using race as the main focus of the book include:
2-0 out of 5 stars SociopoliticalMarxism
Well now, I know where some of the true Marxist are hiding. In this book, Nieto is trying to create equity policies in schools using taxpayer dollars. If she had her way, she would get rid of capitalism, social classes, and distribution of wealth.Of course, we have already seen how that works in the former Soviet Union (it doesn't work at all).Yes, in a democratic-republic (Nieto always forgets the republic part) there is a dominant culture.Kind of why we call this a nation state, we have national culture.Unfortunately, Nieto is too busy saying the dominant culture is based on White European ideals. In fact, the ideals are based on Judaism, which is not European at all.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading made easy, even for a 4-year-old
Wow! I can't say enough good things about this book. I purchased it less than 2 months ago and my son is over halfway through already. I don't normally believe in teaching kids to read at such a young age, but my 4-year-old had already learned all his letters and the sounds they make and was begging me to teach him to read. So I downloaded the first two chapters of this book off the author's website and was so impressed, I promptly bought the book. This book makes teaching reading sooooo easy, even for a parent with zero training in education. Each page takes only a couple of minutes to do, which means you can make your lessons really, really brief (like less than 5 minutes a day) and still make significant progress. To keep the child's interest, each chapter has illustrated short stories that grow increasingly complex as the child advances. Thanks to do this book, my child is reading really well already and teaching him has been a real joy for me. But don't take my word for it- go to The reading lesson website, download the first two chapters, and see for yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Effective and Inexpensive
I think this is the best book one can buy for a small child. It isvery simple to follow and needs no learning time for a parent.
5-0 out of 5 stars WoW!My 3 year old can read!
I bought this book to preview before starting our kindergarten homeschool program. My 3 yr old ds was so interested that I showed him the first page and went over the instructions. I didn't think he'd be too interested at this point. Boy was I wrong :) He loves his reading lesson everyday and though it has only been a few weeks, he is already sounding out simple words with ease. This book is well organized and simple without being boring. You can go as fast or slow as your child needs.I can't recommend it enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A House Divided
"The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America" will challenge any illusion the reader holds that America has left her divided and racist history far behind. Truly a heart rending account of apartheid schooling that bridges the larger social implications of racial and economic disparity with the daily life and dreams of our children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A voice for those who do not have a say right now.
Promises made are not always promises kept.We all say that we want education to be a priority for all.Do we all really support that? The Shame of the Nation exposes the compliancy that many Americans have when it comes to actually promoting equal opportunities for all.We want our professional athletes and Olympic contestants to be able to compete and train in the best facilities and with the best practices. This enables them to reach their fullest potential and beyond. We should all be willing to support this endeavor for the education of all of our students. This book helps us to walk in another's shoes and truly empathize with the inequaties that so many children must deal with.Reading this book should open ones eyes to how many future adult American are set up for failure.Brown vs. Board of Education may have imposed laws for equality but it must go further into the mindset of funding agencies. If we are truly to become equal, we must alleviate the barriers that cause the fragmentation of opporutnity and success.
5-0 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes to problems in our public education system
This book explains how racial segregation in the public schools has been getting worse and why that is a problem. If children interact with other races at a young age, they're less likely to have racist ideas as adults. When people extol the legal and political victories that allowed integrated schools, Kozol finds it ironic because even though apartheid is not the law, current public policy discourages integration.Well-meaning parents in affluent school districts lobby against any zoning change that would include children from poorer areas. The result is that school districts are unintentionally set up to segregate the poor from the middle class and dark-skinned from the ligher-skinned.This makes our society seem horribly unfair to the children going through the segregated, inferior schools.

3-0 out of 5 stars CLAD Text
A well written text essential for acquiring CLAD credentialing. Myths are perpetuated which greatly reduces the credibility - there is only one "race", humans or Homo sapiens. Very few of us were born or came from the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Europe, yet 17th century artificial constructs of "race" and "Caucasian" are used. There is no discussion of how skin pigmentation is an ecotype adaptation, not a "race." Science, Scientific American, Discovery and other peer-reviewed journals have corrected "race" misconceptions repeatedly - yet the authors, with education backgrounds, appear to have not completed a review of current literature.5-0 out of 5 stars Golden resource
I almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. This handbook was a wonderful resource and the only one I used to pass the test .... the FIRST time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Preparing to take the CLAD test.
Chapters 1 & 2 seemed very dry but I'm not big on theory. The remaining chapters were much more interesting. I highly recommend reading it before taking the CLAD test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!
I got this book at a seminar on differentiating instruction and am glad that I did.It has ideas and activities for grades 4-12.I was able to read it quickly, due to its quick-access format.Included are 87 pages of great ideas on grouping, adapting textbooks, prereading, during reading modifications, and after-reading activities.Following this section are 38 pages of reproducibles.I plan to use strategies from this book immediately in my middle school classes. This is a great resource if you want to "teach the student, not the textbook." ...
