2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
If you want a review of subjects you know pretty well, Beating the CSET may be a good choice. If, however, you're rusty or actually need to learn some material for the first time, don't buy this book. Why?Of all the books I have read the last 20 years (over 1,000...I read at least a book a week), this book has the most MISTAKES!
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
I think this is the best CSEST book out there.I read this book from cover to cover in the 2 weeks before the test, then took the CSET and passed all 3 tests on my first try!I really didn't have to use any other resouces. At times this book got a bit wordy and could have used a few more visuals, but other than that it worked for me!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Test Prep, Hurriedly Put Together
I just took the CSET today, so I don't know how well I did. However, I can review this book for what it is.It's well organized, clear, and I found it helpful when I took the CSET.There were two questions on the CSET that I didn't read ANYTHING about in this book. However, there is too much information to cover in just one book anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some of this stuff just seems so obvious
I am a school social worker. I don't use this book very often at all. Maybe that is b/c I don't really "write school treatment plans" for my job. Does anyone? I don't know---it just doesn't seem like most public schools, at least--have specific treatment plans.
2-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous punctuation/editing errors
Did anyone notice how the things reccommended repeat constantly, have the same activity 4 times in the same section, and the fact that the nuumbers are totally out of order?

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone that listens or produces audio should read this book
It is practically futile to review a book of this magnitude. The reviews on the back of the book alone let you know that: Bernie Grundman, Ted Jensen, Roger Nichols, George Massenberg and Mike Collins all think this is an excellent text.In fact it is.It may be the finest book in it's genre and it will survive format and technology changes due to it's emphasis on fundamentals and incredible depth.I highly reccommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars De-mystifies Mastering!
I have been a guitar player, songwriter, and producer for many years and an engineer when I had to be. There is always a certain amount of mystery around the magic done in post production mastering.I don't say this book gets you there magically, but it gives you a real understanding of what is involved and certainly gives you all the information you need to be on your way! Most professional digital recording software contains a lot of useful post production features, but if you don't understand the basics of mastering, they are of limited use.If nothing else, this book tells you what NOT to do if you are going to have someone ELSE master your product! Very useful and easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars "When the Student is Ready..."
The old saying goes "When the Student is ready the Master appears." Whether you are an engineer at a project studio or have aspirations of joining an elite group of artists known as Mastering Engineers this book is a must read. My cd's are sounding better and better with what I've gotten from it. As a composer/engineer/producer in my own little project studio my biggest gripe is, "When can I quit programming and begin creating?" This book is a big help to answer those technical issues and thus narrow my exploration and experimentation during the Mastering process. After all it's the end result that matters and no matter what Zappa says you can't"...fix it in the shrinkwrap". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Electrical Engineers
Great book as it is very clear, methodical, and gives great examples in which you can actually follow unlike some others.I would also recommend going through the problem sets from the authors website online as it really helps solidify the concepts taught in this book. This book is highly recommended for budding VLSI designers or engineers who just want to learn a little bit about VLSI design!

A so-so book.Sort of sloppy, doesnt' quite stand on its own without a course to guide you through it.There is some good information in this book; the chapter on transmission lines is quite good. There are also some more practical design examples in the latter half of the book.I'd recommend the Weste book instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best for active customer service training and seminars
Pick and choose as you wish. It added spice and enthusiasm to my meirc customer service training in dubai.

5-0 out of 5 stars Customer Service Made Easy!
Easy to read book with great games, tips, ideas for elevating the level of customer service by your staff. Most projects take only about 15 minutes of staff time.Minimal props needed - paper, pens, flipchart and a few hand-outs.All activities invite group interaction, tips on coping with negative feedback and lessons about how to continually improve customer service skills while focusing on the value of the staff.I'm using it with the non-medical staff in a hospital setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
This book rounded out my new customer service training with the perfect activities. There were plenty of options to choose from in each section. There were so many, that I had trouble narrowing down which ones to use. I did the first training today and I'm surprised how much my staff liked the activities. I'm really glad that I purchased this book while putting the training together. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for all
I bought a copy of this book to keep in my office for those in my school who needed it.I have received rave reviews from all of my teachers, counselors, etc. What some educators don't understand is that a poorly written letter or rec. can actually be harmful to a students chance of being accepted into college.Although the letter is written by another individual it is a direct reflection on the student who you are writing the letter for.Right or wrong, any mistakes in a letter or rec. reflect on the student and not the writer. Therefore, this book or any similar ones out there are a great addition to any office or gift to new teachers/counselors.It's a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Counselors and Educators!
I am totally delighted with the information contained in this book.A few years ago, I bought one for myself when I was a high school counselor.Recently, I was appointed principal for a large comprehensive public high school in Southern California.I bought all my counselors a copy of the book.It is very easy to follow and comprehend. It is a great resource for counselors and educators.5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible Helper for High School Counselors !
Susan Whalley's book is the most used and sought after volume in my very busy high school guidance counseling office. "Who has the letter book?", is a frequent question in my office during college application season. Each year, a typical counselor at my school writes about 30 - 40 letters recommending students to college. This is a daunting task, considering the fact that we don't know all of our students personally, (alas, if we only could). After a brief meeting when we ask students a few key questions to help us along, it is letter writing time! And the words do not always come.Susan Whalley's book provides counselors and teachers with descriptive words and phrases, thoughts on letter writing, and helpful insights into the nature of writing recommendations. The sample letters are grouped to roughly categorize the type of student, for example the "pluggers", "academic achievers", and the "hardest ones to write".These sample letters serve to jog our minds and get us going. I recommend this book for every high school guidance office and teacher's bookshelf. It is a valuable and helpful tool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes! This book is awesome!
I learned more about "doing" psychotherapy from this book than all of my other books combined. I used this book often throughout my internship, and I found it very helpful in many ways. The author helps to validate what novice therapists are thinking about and doing and worrying about. The author gives specific examples throughout the book, so that you know how to visualize what he's talking about. If you are into relational work (and I personally believe that all therapy is relational), then this book is for you. Not many books really outline the therapist-client relationship. Most books say, "Focus on process and not content," but then don't explain how to do that or show you what it looks like. This book is paving the way for how to address the "process" in therapy and not just the content. You get tangible, concrete examples of many, many situations that may come up when working with clients.

4-0 out of 5 stars The jury is out... this filmmaker likes it
Obviously people have mixed opinions of this book. I liked the in-depth info, the readability and the color plates. I'm a director who is interested in learning more about cinematography from that angle. The Filmmaker's Handbook on Plume, or Bordwell and Thompson's Film Art will cover a lot of the same info for a cheaper price, but I like this book's illustrations and more advanced technical info, especially on video. Ultimately you gotta go out and do it, a book will only go so far. But as books go I find this one pretty great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Student Book
As a film student myself, I've found this book incredible helpful. Not only is it a great window into understanding how lighting and shot composition work, but it explains clearly and in detail many technical aspects of cinematography.Of course it's not perfect, but it's a great beginners guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch
I have read most of the books Amazon sells about cinematography and there is not question in my mind that this is the best of all of them. It's really comprehensive and covers all sides of camerawork, both technical things like lens and color and exposure etc, but also composition (which he calls visual language) and maintaining continuity, coverage and what he calls "the language of the lens."

I was required to use this book in a college class. There was nothing in the text I did not already know. The format is strange. There are very odd exercises in the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Clear & Concise
This book was great for me as I am very new to documentary filmmaking. It was methodical but without being boring and Ms. Bernard has a very clear and deep understanding of what makes documentaries work and not work. Her experience shows throughout and having actual documentaries as reference points was tremendously helpful.I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced and insightful - A must read!
Bernard's professional expertise shines through in this unique book. The book is balanced, insightful, and thorough. Bernard examines a wide range of filmmakers, bringing a critical and perceptive eye to their work. A must read for anyone interested in learning more about storytelling, structure and other essential aspects of documentary filmmaking. A practical and readable guide that is also the perfect text for upper-level college courses. Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you just hate Michael Moore, turn around
It's fairly well written and the author you can tell has done a lot of research and field work. What throws you off at first is her dying love to Michael Moore to my opinion which is a fact that he doesn't make documentaries. The guy makes blockbuster films. I don't know, anyway, good for the entry level documentary filmaker. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good solid book for both lawyers and educators.
This book is a must-have for educators. Since the push for inclusion means many students with disabilities are entering regular schools and classrooms with their peers, it is of great worth that the regular teacher as well as the special education teachers know the background of the laws that pertainto these students with diverse needs. It would be beneficial to bothstudents, teachers, and parents to know and understand how the laws areapplied in court, what an IEP is, what is expected of the teachers, andwhat can be expected of the students. I have the other major law books ondisability laws, but this one is more geared toward other participants inthe process besides lawyers. It is very readable and very understandablewithout having to go to law school to get a background in law first. Isuggest this or rather recommend this to my friends and students who areinterested in working with those with disabilities in regular schoolsettings. 2-0 out of 5 stars A college textbook for 2nd graders.....
This textbook reads like it was written for an elementary-school level, offering little to no insight into actual techniques for Interviewing and Therapeutic Counseling. My professor taught straight from it, so needless to say, I was waiting for her to instruct us that it was "nap-time".
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook and resource
I used this book in a Counseling Practicum course and was greatly impressed by the organization of the book, the vast number of examples, the clarity of the definitions, and topics covered. In particular, this book really addresses the complexity of doing counseling in a multicultural world and discusses the role of one's cultural worldview in how we make decisions and interpretations in counseling sessions. The exercises throughout each chapter are an excellent opportunity to practice the different skills and the process notes and comments are helpful in understanding the counseling dynamics. I also appreciated the way in which the authors' (Drs. Allen and Mary Ivey) share their own perspectives and experiences throughout the book. I would highly recommend this book to people in helping professions, students, instructors, therapists, etc. I also received very positive feedback from students in my course about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The difference between a bartender and a counselor!
This book is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student; a wonderful introduction to the concept of the "intentional interview." This text will aid in mastering basic listening and influencing skills, as well as illustrate how to conduct a full interview using only listening skills.Read more

Editorial Review

Plenty of college admission guides promise to help studentscrack the Ivy League, but few of these have detailed knowledge to backup their advice. Michele Hernandez, on the other hand, is the ultimateinsider. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dartmouth College, she alsoworked as Dartmouth's assistant director of admissions for four years. In Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good IF your kid is a hyper-mega-achiever
This book is very useful if your kid has 800 SAt scores, an A avergae, and has discovered a cure for a fatal disease (well, practically!). if you have a bright, well-rounded normal kid who maybe hasn't hit their peak by age 17, though, pay attention to its real message -- the Ivys are NOT within the realm of reality. So be it. To find out what to do next, and to hold on to your sanity and humor while you do, see a great new book, GETTING IN WITHOUT FREAKING OUT

5-0 out of 5 stars A is for Admissions
This is probably the most helpful book that I have read about college admissions, because it gives real information instead of just maintaining the party line. It shows just how important standardized test scores are in the process and gives you the equation to figure out how you stack up against other ivy league hopefuls. I found this to be extremely enlightening. I would recommend this to anyone who is seriously considering applying to an top 20 college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
One of the finest books on competitive college admissions that I have ever read!As a public school guidance counselor, I have worked with many students who have gone through the process.I am constantly recommending this book to my most motivated students and their parents as I find it to be well organized and technical enough to help a reader understand the nuances of the Academic Index. The fact that the author was a Director of Admissions at an Ivy allows the reader to "peek behind the curtain."I highlighted the important points and went back after reading it and found that nearly every page has a significant point on it!If you are a motivated student or the parent of one who will be seeking out admissions at a competitive college - this book is a must read. ...
