Be cautious. The book is not very well edited.
This book is mostly useful because it is easy to read and understand. However, the editors have missed SEVERAL spelling errors, wich I find unexcusable in a college textbook that costs so much money. What do we pay them so much for? Read more

In accurate for teaching and learning!
There are too many errors in this book. I used it in my class for a couple of weeks and found many errors. Too many errors to continue using it to educate teachers. I would not recommend this book to anyone, especially ifthey are trying to learn from it.

Action research in education
I have used this book in a graduate classroom and it has been very good for my students to learn to do action research in their schools.

Too many errors!
I teach graduate level research courses and reviewed this book for the publisher. There are so many errors in this book that I cannot even begin to list them. I could not in all practicality use this book with my students because of the multiple theoretical and conceptual errors. Another reviewer suggested graduate students get the book because it is helpful. As a professor I would not agree. There are many other texts that do a much better job discussing Action Research that are more practical, precise, make relevant connections to practice, andoffer theoretical and conceptual accuracies. ... Just the facts, ma'am...
I'm currently using this as a college textbook.It's taken me three weeks to work through three chapters.After two weeks, I ended up skimming over the 2nd and 3rd chapters just to make it through without stopping 4 or 5 times wondering what it was I was reading.I can see it's loaded with important information, but it's an effort to stay focused.The headings and subheadings are bland and repetitive.I often feel like I'm rereading a section, but how can I tell when sections I've read aren't memorable? The authors also show a knack for stating the obvious.For instance, "Identifying the required KSAs is not as obvious, but they are still relatively easy to obtain, by examining each task and asking the question, 'What knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes are necessary to perform a particular task?'" Too many errors and no errata
The book is decent - better than a few I have purchased but suffers from a common failing in technical books - it is repleat with errors. Really, a book which is used by some in technical schools or colleges should have only a few errors at most. This book has scores of errors, which makes learning very difficult. Like most subjects if you intend to teach yourself, you will need three or four references including PLC manuals in order to resolve the many ambiguous diagrams and statements in the text...

Great teaching material
I teach electricians about PLCs and use this book as the class textbook. It has very good coverage of the subject. There are other books that are less costly and cover the same basic material (but not in the same depth that this book does).

Excellent PLC Book
Stenerson's book is an exellent introduction to the subject of Programmable Logic Controllers.He uses several of the major brands in his discussion of automation.The book is not designed to make one fluent withone particular PLC, but rather to give one basic knowledge which isapplicable to all brands of PLCs.Read more

So much more than common sense
I purchased this book and a few others on the topic and this was by far the most useful. The main reason was because it not only gave countless tips on what is important and what is not, but it was the only book that actually explained WHY certain things are important. It really changed my perception of how the process of getting into graduate school works, and this was something that the other books did not do. I think the other review that says this book is all about common sense is completely off the mark. (The other reviews I can agree with). The great thing about this book is that it deals with stuff that is NOT common sense...things that most people would never guess about the way students get accepted into grad school. Unlike the other books, this one has a small format and is full of text on every page...overall, it contains more information and useful advice than most of the other books that have lots of extra junk and large margins to make the book seem bigger and like a better value. It also has a good index, and although the website list in the appendix is outdated, it still gives a good idea of what types of useful websites you can find out there.

Useful in many ways
This book provides clear, step-by-step information that students need to know about the application process;one which is complex and at times ovewhelming. I particularly appreciated the sections of the book which explained the decision-making process and the importance of choosing a supervisor based not only on the type of research area but on personal factors as well. Although much information about potential schools, supervisors, research areas etc.. is available on the web, there is also much to consider that cannot be obtained easily and this book really addresses those issues well. I myself am still unsure of when I will be applying to graduate school, however, I am sure to use this book when the time does come.

Common Sense
I felt like I wasted my money purchasing this book. In general, it was mostly just common sense for anyone who is really serious about applying to graduate school - ie talk to professors, talk to grad students, research the programs you are interested in. Basically, it said that if you do not have excellent grades, you need to have other areas of strength. Obviously.

I have been using entry-level NLEs (e.g. Vegas Movie Studio, Pinnacle Studio, Magix Movie Edit Pro) for about four years. Any progress in my editing skills came from the traditional 'trial and error' approach, and from learning by watching other amateur-produced movies in a video club that I belong to...
A great start
Editing digital video gave me a good insight into the baiscs of digital editing. The last time I edited video it was on a linear system and I found some other texts a little confusing. This book enabled me to use my NLE system with confidence.

Counseling Book Very helpful.
Easy to understand, well written book.
An Excellent Introductory Book to Counseling
Nystul's "Introduction to Counseling: An Art and Science Perspective" is an excellent book for the beginning counselor either at the undergraduate level or the graduate level (we all start somewhere).I was assigned this book for my first Master's level class and it provided an excellent background into my chosen field.When I read the book, it cured a lot of questions that I had about counseling.I learned a lot of information that I either did not know or realize.Specifically, the book not only introduces the reader to counseling techniques, but also provides an overview of theoretical approaches, ethics and legal issues, assessment and diagnosis, and diversity issues.In addition, this book gives information on counseling approaches with various populations (i.e. child, group, family, school, career and mental health etc).Also, Nystul (1999) provided background information as well as practical techniques for each theory that he explained.Moreover, this book gives a superb rendition of various types of counselors and the description of duties that they perform.My favorite parts of the book are the "personal notes" where the author gives a story or example to go along with his discussion of a subject.The personal notes provide a great modality for the reader to look at a concept in a realistic or life-like manner.Most importantly, the book is organized extremely well and makes reading a lot easier than most textbooks; it utilizes pictures, diagrams, charts and etc. to get the point across in an effective and efficient manner.As a graduate student who utilized this book, I would highly recommend this book to professors, counselors and counseling students.Overall, it is an excellent source of background counseling information and for additional resources to aid in a person's development as a counselor. I almost forgot, the reason that I gave the book a 4 star rating and not a five is because general information about counseling can be quite dry reading material, it all depends on the individual reading it. Excellent career guide!!!
When I was offered the job of CIO, I only had 1 week to prepare for the interview.I purchased this book immediately based on the exerpts that I read on line.What an amazing and helpful book.Mr. Smith's pointers and recommendations helped me tremendously!It assisted in preparing me for the interview and even though I am now working as a CIO I still review it.I liked his points on the IT Governance Structure document - somthing that I plan to put in place here, I also read with interest his tips on the first 100 days in the job.I also like the statistical data that were included in each chapter.What was also particularly helpful were his personal experience.I like how the book gives direction to aspiring CIOs and new CIOs.I highly recommend this book.

More credible than informative
The information contained in this book are not exactly revolutionary. You want to be a CIO? Get an MBA from top notch school, be technically proficient, get project management experience, work on large scale projects, get experience with large scale budgets, and work on your soft (communication and interpsonal) skills.

My first CIO book and this made me more excited to get my first CIOposition. Good format, excellent recommendations and in-depth knowledge of the CIO position.

Great learning tool
I bought this book for a legal assistant class and I enjoyed it.I learned a lot.It's hard to learn computers from a book - but not this one.The book comes with software and has tutorials and exercises that accompany the software.My class also liked the fact that there are tons of practical applications for how computers are actually used by practicing paralegals and legal secretaries in the book.Also, when it comes to litigation support -one of the most difficult legal computer applications to master - it was fantastic.It comes with three different litigation support programs, including Summation.Summation is fairly involved to learn and the book, tutorials, exercises and software did a good job of teaching this to me.I am confident now in my ability to do basic litigation support.The chapter on using the Internet to do legal and factual research was also excellent.

I would definately buy this again!
This book is essential for anyone working in a law office.Computers are used in nearly every aspect of working in a law firm.The book is huge - nearly 700 pages - and it covers every main type of program used in a law office.It comes with software, and lots of exercises and I thought it was very easy to read and straight forward.It covers hard topics like litigation support and Access databases in a way that I could understand without totally going over my head.The book covers both entry level and advanced topics.For example in the word processing chapter the Word tutorial had 7 lessons that got progressively more difficult, starting with basic word processing and ending with mail merges and creating tables of authorities.

Highly Recommended
I think this is a fabulous book.It comes with demonstration versions of 5 legal software programs including three litigation support programs, a time and billing program and a case management program.There were a number of in-depth, hands-on exercises for each program, so I really got to learn about each type of program by using it.Also, although I have used Access, Word, Excel and Powerpoint before, I liked the fact that there were in-depth exercises for learning legal applications for each of these programs.This is a very practical book. ... It was Okay
This book helps to brush up on a few key points, like math and mechanical. It depends on which test you are taking. It dosn't cover much of what is on the ASTB, it offers a little help, but not much.

poorly edited
This book has a ton of typographical errors.This book and the Arco book appear to be the only 2 books available as study guides for the AFOQT.After buying and studying from both books, I am not surprised the Air Force recommends studying from other guides like SAT, ACT, GRE, etc.The explanations are poor also.I've been studying from these books and bought other guides and have basically been using the other guides to find explanations for similar questions that I do not understand.
