5-0 out of 5 stars The Devils Highway
Not being a avid reader ,if a book doesn't interest me in the first few pages I put it away. This certainly was not such a book. Written by a Mexican American I expected the story to be slanted toward anti immigration only to find a balanced view of the Border situation from the prospective of those desperate to make a better life for their familys, to the Border Patrol and the almost impossible job before them. Two things that stand out are the compassion of the Border Patrol and how the immigrants are so often preyed upon by their own people. A must read before making a judgement about our border situation and the people who live {and die} there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misplaced Sympathy for an Invading Army
It seems like this book has appeal for the come one, come all immigration proponents and multiculturalism fanatics.I take no joy in hearing the stories of human suffering, whether it be south of the border or elsewhere, but there is a heavy cost for allowing millions of mexicans into America. Many locales with large illegal immigrant populations have seen a sharp increase in violent crime and gang activity.
5-0 out of 5 stars He may as well have been...
Jonathan Miles of MEN'S JOURNAL wrote this of Urrea's sublime tribute to the immigrant's journey, "A tour de force account of an adventure unlike the ones you're used to reading."And it's true. What makes THE DEVIL'S HIGHWAY shine is Urrea's ability to lend his novelist's eye to a story more true than most of us would like to imagine. For whatever side you hold in the Border debate, Urrea will make you believe in the people who walk. Even if he doesn't pull you toward empathy for those taking this journey, he will at least illuminate for you what happens to a group of men who feel like crossing the infamous Devil's Highway is the only option. From their first step into the desert to their rescue just short of the U.S. border, you will not want to put this book down.Urrea takes the magnifying glass that is the Border Control Issue and focuses that hot sun down to a small group later called the Wellton 26.Literally. Every step through this Pulitzer Prized Finalist will force you onto the desert with these men : walking with these men, following with these men, thirsting with these men, and dying with these men. Urrea has made me want to keep going.Luckily, in the rear of the book, he's given me more with suggested readings to further my lusty desire to ingest all I can about this issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Turvey demystifies criminal profiling
This book by Mr. Turvey offers a lucid and comprehensive overview of criminal profiling. Contrary to popular belief, criminal profiling is not science per se but rather a collection of subjective views offered by renowned criminal profilers. Most of these views have not been scientifically corroborated and according to Turvey there is no concensus amongst criminal profilers on this subject. Turvey holds that much more scientific research is required in order to substantiate many claims. What separates Turvey's book from most books on this subject is his refusal to make sensationalistic assertions. Every major theory is explained clearly and both its strengths and flaws are accounted for. Inductive and deductive methods are reviewed extensively and meticulously and it becomes readily apparent to the reader that criminal profiling has been only somewhat beneficial in a few cases. In most cases, criminal profilers have failed to offer an accurate profile of the perpetrator, small wonder given the extreme complexity of human nature.
1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
Don't waste your money on this book.As a professor of Criminology, I found Mr. Turvey's approach to be quite juvenile in it's theories.Mr. Tuvey's analysis often contradicts itself in following chapters.I advise my students that there are far better books about criminal profiling on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Text in Crime Scene Behavior Analysis
Mr. Turvey has done an outstanding job in assembling and presenting critical, fundamental concepts on behavioral analysis of crimes and criminals based upon what the physical evidence describes. The introduction by John Thornton, PhD, one of the worlds leading forensic scientists and authors is an endorsement that says it all. Each human act is unique in the context of the mindset of the offender and his behavior at the time of the crime. This book describes the effective analyis and interpretation based upon the uniqueness of each crime scene evidence and event, keeping the investigator on track. This book should be required reading for all "introduction to criminal investigation" classes for both law enforcement and the defense bar. The book demonstrates the importance of merging and considering all aspects of victimology, forensic science, psychology and good old fashioned investigative work. Mr. Turvey does an excellent job of promoting the deductive, individualized analysis of a crime. Although it is tempting to look at the "statistical" data of similar scenes, the inductive process can be distracting and misleading. Yes, he takes a few jabs at some of FBI's legends, however it is more likely that he attacks the process and not the individual. For those of us who have worked with the Feds and enjoyed their friendship, it does evoke a chuckle or two... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!!
This book is just plain bad.Writer has very hard time getting anything across clearly..way to wordy for the simple messages that he is trying to get across.Avoid if at all possible unless you like to sleep!! or if you have to read it for a test...even then not worth it!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Long winded.
The only reason anyone would read this book is because it was listed as required reading for a promotional exam. Mr Whisenand is out of his mind and should limit his writing to something he has firsthand experience in. Read this book only if you are having insomnia.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tiresome, windy, unrealistic, list happy
This guy is out of his mind.A very frustrating read which makes U.S Army technical manuals seem fascinating.Mr. Whisenand is an obvious scholar, but I fear his "book of lists" does not translate all that well to actual human beings. In addition, I found the section on "community oriented policing" especially overblown. He fails to consider the prosecutorial implications of stating that "long and detailed reports are turnoffs to many people" (page 331, paragraph 1), they're turnoffs to defense attornies too!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Into the mind of the killer
What makes Chikatilo fascinating is that it took so long for him to be caught, and the reasons for this delay. He was incredibly lucky, in some ways, but the structure of laws, customs and means of communication in the Russia of the time are the real reasons for his long career as a killer. Conradi explains all of this clearly. What is not so clear are the details of how all of the info he presents was acquired. Did the author have access to confession documents, or interrogation documents? If so, the readers would sure like to see them included in the book. Overall, a very readable, informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Shocking!
This is quite shocking of how the mafia is able to buy off members of both major political parties in the U.S. along with other Western nations such as Israel.I would also recommend reading Double Cross about Sam and Chuck Giancana the two mafia bosses whom had the Kennedys in their pockets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inciteful and Highly Readable
A real eye-opener. Friedman writes about some pretty ruthless, cruel people. I don't know how the author could have possibly obtained all the information that he did; he is a brave man. I hope he's still alive, and will be amazed if he is, given the nature of the people about whom he has written. Friedman describes Russian Mafiya types operating in Toronto, near to where I live -- very unnerving. Mind you, if you live in NYC, Miami, Denver, San Francisco or Los Angeles, you are not alone...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information.
Friedman has done the public a service by this book.It renews my faith that there are a few, albeit an extremely small number, jews who will tell the truth.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
This was among the 7 pieces of source material on my most recent exam.It was better than I expected.I looked at it from the perspective that I should use a person's culture to my advantage. With a familiarity of culture specific issues, I can make myself a more effective police officer.I found the author's writing to be of high quality, but book did not make me more culturally diverse. If you are looking for a book that teaches you how to be a police officer, this is not it.If you are looking for a book that might explain why the Iranian guy got mad at you last week, this is the right one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Multicultural Law Enforcement
The worse book I have ever read. This book is filled with Liberal jibberish and worthless information that the authors try to pass off as fact. This 500+ page masterpiece is loaded with unfactual opinions from people who know absolutely nothing about Police work. It could have been explained in 50 or less pages.Don't waist your money!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced and Necessary
This book is an important contribution to policing at multiple levels. It discusses ethnic and minority groups in a respectful manner, attempting to avoid stereotypes. It provides the police officer with insight into and strategies for policing a multicultural society. At no point does it even slightly suggest that law enforcement should use culture or race as an excuse to not enforce the law.The introductory chapter provides a framework for understanding the phenomenon of immigration in the U.S., and connects 21st century demographics to the need for the book itself. The authors provide useful information on topics such as community policing, racial profiling, and hate crimes. It is absolutely ridiculous to refer to this book as apologetic or soft on crime. If police officers are not ready for this book, then they should get out of policing. This book is one of the best that I have seen for law enforcement professionals related to the multicultural society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Wyland of Toothfish
Mr. Knecht will hopefully bring awareness to the plight of the Patagonian Toothfish like Wyland did for whales. This book is well written and keeps the reader interested throughout ... He traces the journey of the "fishing pirates" and also blends the story of commercialization of this soon-to-be extinct fish.Let's save these fish!
5-0 out of 5 stars Combines culinary history with a world-wide chase to document the fading Chilean Sea Bass
HOOKED: PIRATES POACHING AND THE PERFECT FISH promises much for a wide audience, from those interested in fishing to others researching modern-day pirating and the politics of the sea. The explosive world-wide demand for popular fish has all but fostered over-fishing and all but condoned seafood piracy: HOOKED combines culinary history with a world-wide chase to document the fading Chilean Sea Bass, a prehistoric-looking fish with the richness of tuna and the texture of butter. It's hard to place this rich text: part culinary history, part social inquiry, largely environmental exploration - it also fits under 'True Adventure'. Many will find it compelling.

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing a "key" point...
While this book does address a variety of necessary topics and its overall praise is well-deserved there is a gap, which means there is still a need for a textbook in forensic entomology. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Forensic Entomology
This work is extraordinarily useful to any death investigation professional. It provides an extensive overview of all aspects of forensic entomology with chapter contributions from the leading forensic entomologists in the United States and Canada. It is expertly written so that the investigator with no formal entomological training can easily understand the context of the book, while still on a level that other formally trained entomologists will find very useful. It is richly illustrated with over 150 color photos of insects of forensic importance. This allows investigators to immediately recognize forensic insects at the scene so that collection can be assured. This book is certain to become an invaluable reference for anyone in the field of forensic entomology, or those involved in the collection of entomological evidence from a death scene. It is a perfect complement to the other works published on the subject by K.G.V. 3-0 out of 5 stars No Footnotes
I'm about a third of the way through the book; very provocative so far.Unfortunately, my copy has no footnotes. The notes are at the end of the chapters as you'd expect, but the numbers they reference are not in the text.Tends to complicate a serious academic reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars A riposte to free market cheerleaders
"Illicit" by Moises Naim is a good primer on the underground economy. Mr. Naim's experience as an Editor at Foreign Policy magazine appears to have helped the author hone his skills at synthesizing an impressive quantity of third-party research to support his thesis. It is also evident that Mr. Naim's discussions with numerous high-level personal and professional contacts around the world have helped him reflect on the topic at length, leading him to offer many pages of thoughtful critique and analysis. The end result is a balanced and nuanced book that makes a valuable contribution to our understanding about an increasingly urgent and worrisome problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars I know, I know, it's not all true .....
We all are more than aware that James Frey's books are not all based on his experiences but that doesn't change the fact that both "A Million Little Pieces" and "My Friend Leonard" are powerful stories. The characters are riveting, the story line is completely engrossing, and Frey's writing style adds so much to the story. "My Friend Leonard" was intense, funny, painful, and inspiring.I just finished it last night and would recommend it to anyone.I think that people/the media need to stop judging James Frey for taking creative license in his writing and just accept both books for what they are: very strong, readable stories that draw you in from page 1 and move you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, even if it is fiction...
I remember vaguely hearing about James Frey and the whole Oprah thing, which seemed a little ridiculous. But I was still curious about his book "A Million Little Pieces". So I bought the book and read it, I loved it. For me it was eye opening, everyday I work with criminals and drug addicts but I have never been one myself. As much as I want to help them, I don't understand what they have experienced. Mr.Frey's books have laid out a story of addiction and recovery that is butural, yet honest and accurate. "My Friend Leonard" is a touching story that nicely finshes off the saga that "A Million Little Pieces" begins. I would recommend them both to anyone, they are captivating and honest about the horrors of drug addiction. Even though parts of what Mr.Frey wrote are not true, you cannot deny good writing and a good story.

5-0 out of 5 stars that man can write...

5-0 out of 5 stars Living The Truth
Louis Rodriquez writes the truth! I know I lived in the Lomas during the time Louis writes about being in Garvey school and at Mark Keppel. I lived in Lomas from 1959 to 1972. Fortunately, I survived the madness in Lomas. This was our life as we knew it, the gangs, drugs, girls and of course the parties. It brings back memories of our life in the barrio L's...

5-0 out of 5 stars I read it, re-lived it and loved it!
Well written book by one of my favorite Authors.Louis is an awesome person who is committed to his work and community.Book can be used for anyone looking for a real life reference to the history of Chicano/a Gangs in Southern California.I read it, re-lived it and loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always Challanging
Many young people face the same perils Luis Rodriguez shares in this auto biographical coming-of-age story; some overcome these challanges, while others succumb. But, how many rise as far above them as Rodriguez has?

2-0 out of 5 stars I hated it
My department changed the reading material for a promotional exam from Callibre Press to this junk.I was forced to read and internalize it;I hated it.This book is intollerable from the front cover. Take a look at the guy in the graphic. He is holding a flashlight in his gun hand; nuf said?

4-0 out of 5 stars Very basic, good book
I had to read this book for apromotional examination and found it to be a good refresher of the very basic points that we all learned at the beginning of our police careers. When I am approached by someone who is not yet in police work and wants to read a good, simply written and understandable book on law enforcement, I always recommend this one.It may seem to be too basic for those of us in this field for the years I have served, but many areas are still very relevant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Police Field Operations
Too vague and general for someone using the book to use as a reference. Does not go into a lot of key points you actually use on patrol. Also, tends to make remarks that do not reflect the reality of todays policework. The author seems out of touch with policing today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good - Highly Recomended
Buy this book and read it. I was looking for a professional, yet easy to read book and this is it. This book will improve your self confidence in approaching financial reports and understanding the numbers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Investor Beware
This book shows how GAAP rules can be twisted to mask poor financial performance and boost the price of stock.Among the tricks exposed:shifting revenue from one period to another; taking losses at convenient times; and manipulating depreciation schedules to minimize expenses. Each trick is illustrated with real-world examples drawn from SEC cases and civil litigation.I enjoyed the book very much:it's short, readable, and wise.I did, however, wonder about what audience the author was trying to reach.Accountants and financial analysts will already know these tricks and regard the exposition as superficial; on the other hand, readers with no business background at all might be daunted by the accounting technicalities.Probably the ideal reader is a hobbyist-investor who reads business books for pleasure. For such readers, "Financial Shenanigans" offers pleasures galore.

4-0 out of 5 stars Know more about tricky accounting technique
For those who have taken ACCT 101, there is a good book to learn accounting tricky in detail. This book could be better if changed its text book style, although this makes readers easier to read, a bit boring. The example are not very good as most of the analyzed companies are not well known.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Military and Police Sniper by Mike Lau
This is an outstanding book jammed with information for both the novice and master shooter alike. I constantly review sections though I read the book a few years ago.Subjects include what makes a rifle a precision weapon, ammunition, optics, position, the difference between military and police sniping, etc. It's definately a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Military and Police Sniper
I would reccomend this for the learning sniper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on this subject
If you are a person who has an interest in Military and Police sniping you must read this book. Together with the book written by Major John L. Plaster 'The Ultimate Sniper'this book offers a good insight in how things work and how things are done to function as a sniper. A lot of practical tips are added in this book. As you go through the book you understand how much the author 'Michael Lau' knows about the subject and how much experience he has in the subject. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Alright.
In a word, this book "sucks."I had to purchase it for a class in which I am currently using.Yea, it has an ABUNDANCE of useful information, but the part that gets me is the fact that if your teacher uses Abadinsky's testing booklet, it's all wrong. It's even been discussed in our class at how off the test questions are as opposed to what's in his book.If possible, which is hard when it comes to textbooks, buy another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for Criminal Justice majors
I am a college professor who just finished teaching ORGANIZED CRIME to twenty college juniors and seniors.I selected Abadinsky's book as the text because it is carefully and thoughtfully "choreographed."The information provided flows in a sensible and clearly written design. Some texts appear to be designed for Rhodes Scholars and are virtually impossible to read. This is not the case with this great book!I recommend it to teachers and those who have in interest in this fascinating subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organized Crime's concept, empircial evidence and current LE
If you (the reader, the researcher) is interested in Organized Crime, I strongly recommend this book (Howard Abadinsky's Organized Crime, 6th Ed.) This book is the only detailed bo
