5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ!
This book weaves so many heartfelt things together beautifully...scenery, family, community, horses, and of coruse the kids. The Meeders are not wealthy, it shows what determination can do. It's an honest look at the world in all of the good and bad. I own my own horse and being a horse lover made it all the more poignant. However, I feel everyone could really appreciate this work wether or not they are involved in horses.
4-0 out of 5 stars hope IS rising
This book is wonderful in the sense that it conveys a inspiring story of circumstances that could have only been handled by a caring God.I also, on the other hand, find it a little dull if you crave fiction. It is completely based on real events and to younger children and even some teens it may seem boring. But it is, nevertheless, a very awesome and touching story that almost every reader will enjoy, but you may not find it completely captivating.I do think that it should be on your "to read" list.Even if it isn't your favorite book, it is nice to read for the experience. It you love fiction, I still recommend it for something new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty from ashes
Our daughter loves horses so we bought this book for her.To my surprise the whole family loved it as we read a chapter at a time out loud.If you want to develop your compassion and your vision for real beauty, read this book.It shows the potential and value in seemingly worthless things.Or more specifically in horses that some see as worthless.Or in a child that has no hope.Kim Meeder has experienced the worst and the best in life, and describes the transition between the two incredibly well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profiling Violent Crimes is a Great Tool
This has been a great help for my wife. She is gone back to school and this book has greatly helped her in her classes. Amazon's prices was much less about 40% cheaper than the book store and other websites.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but poorly written
I was assigned this book for a criminial justice course on profiling, and while I find the content interesting, the book itself is hard to read because the writing is bad.I *think* the authors are trying to state veiled opinions about the 'hotshots' of the FBI and what they would call 'proper' use of criminal profiling, but the language is stilted and I just end up confused as to their intent. That coupled with the misuse of the word 'affect' (instead of 'effect') within the first ten pages! Therefore, if you're looking for a well-written, thought-provoking text, this isn't it, but it can provide some interesting commentary on the state of profiling today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ugh
I agree completely with Dr. Chorbajian.I purchased this book in preparation for a graduate level criminal profiling class and have been thoroughly disappointed with both the quality of the writing and the depth (or lack thereof) of discussion. The authors may be experts in their field, but you wouldn't know it from this book.Unless you're forced to buy this book for school, opt for something else. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars This textbook stinks...
This book is unorganized, out-of-date, too focused on New York City, and on every other page promotes the authors and their careers...On page 7 they are telling you how much has changed with the computer age, and the internet, and one of the authors tells you he went to grade school and they used quill pens and fountain jars...okay, I didn't need to know that.It was so annoying that by page 14, I was going to submit to them a list of improvements, but it would have been EXTENSIVE!From there on just gritted my teeth and got through it...Good luck! You'll be really tired of the references to the Trade City Bombing, and NYC in general, by the end of it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The 'MUST Read' for law enforcement intelligence students
Jonathan R. White's Defending the Homeland: Domestic Intelligence, Law Enforcement, and Security is the book I assign as the keystone text for a Law Enforcement Intelligence course. It is a `must read' because it correctly portrays intelligence as both art and science, deeply rooted in action-making tangible things happen, getting real things done-by reducing warfare to its simplest level and thereby limiting the negative effects of susceptibilities such as fog, chance, and friction. This volume makes sense of how the traditionally polar fields of law enforcement and intelligence can develop a symbiotic relationship for synergistic effect.

4-0 out of 5 stars The test was MUCH easier!
This book scared me, I was terrified to take the CHP exam, but the book overstates the test difficulty. Most helpful portions were the grammar portion (teaches you what to look for and the format of the questions) and the background check. If you are concerned about your review BUY THIS BOOK.otherwise think back to your highschool SAT and breathe a sigh of relief, its not that hard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made the difference between "PASS" and "FAIL"
This book was a tremendous help to prepare for the CHP test. The tests provided were very similar to the ones on the actual test. The whole study program outlined in the book was excellent. All the information provided was very helpful in my success in passing the test on the first try. I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about taking the CHP test. Thanks for the help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frightening account of corruption
Black Mass is an unbelievable account of the illicit relationship between two Irish mobsters from South Boston (Whitey Bulger and Stevie Flemmi) and their FBI handlers (John Connolly and John Morris).
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Book
I've had an interest in Boston and the organized crime around Boston for a while. I've actually had a big interest in the mafia in general. This is a great book with a lot of information that is very useful in understanding how corruption in the system allows organized crime to become more powerful and almost unstoppable.

4-0 out of 5 stars More to come??
One might ask after reading this excellent book whether 2 kids, say brothers, were groomed to follow in the Bulger's footsteps but perhaps something went awry??

1-0 out of 5 stars I shot this book then burned what was left
I was forced to read this book for the written portion of my Sergeant promotional exam.I have a BA in Criminal Justice and a BA in Psychology. This is the worst textbook I have ever read. The authors have so little information to impart, that they quote themselves from other chapters! After sifting through the c_ _ p in this book, I now have a clear understanding of what community policing actually is:People are too stupid to fix their own problems and are unable to rely on their elected leaders, so the police must pick up the slack. In this book, you could just as easily substitute Mail Woman, Garbage Man, or Cable TV Repairman for Police Man.As you read, you find out that you have been a terrible police officer.Further, the only way to fix yourself is to read this book and internalize its junk.Simply put, community policing is a way for your department to get federal funding.Next time someone asks you to fix a social problem, tell them that their elected local representative, home owner's association, town council, or governer is responsible for those concerns, not the police.Though, you will be glad to lock up their neighbor for kicking his dog. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I agree with another reader
Bill Buford does go analytical about half way into the book, this is a good book, 4 stars imho but not a great book and I would take a few things he says with a grain of salt; so in other words, I don't always believe what Bill says but it may be so. It is a candidate for one of those books that spurs on reading more books on the topic to see, "what in the world is going on here" and truly, when other reviewers mention other books to read, that is helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
Whether you are a fan of soccer or not, Among the Thugs is a very interesting insight into the minds and motivations of hooligans. An American now residing in England for years, Bill Buford recounts time spent in an attempt to understand the culture of violence that attracts so many young fans. Less about the game, and more about a seedy and fascinating sub-culture of the more belligerent fans of the sport. An excellent read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read.
Interesting read. I grew up watching the games in England in the 80's and was unaware of quite the extent of violence that went on. This would be an ideal book for someone studying about crowd violence or football thugs. I did however find that the book was difficult to read in parts and did it not seem to flow. I thought some of the detailed analysis of crowds was un-necessary and would have preferred more detail on the thugs and violence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks to the missing .75 cents...
We get an incredibly engaging page-turner of an astronomer/system manager tracking down a foreign hacker. Cliff Stoll genuinely struggles and questions his own actions not knowing whether he is doggedly tracing some hapless student or a nefarious spy. In the end he overcomes his Berkeley counterculture distrust of all those three letter gov't agencies and develops a respect for their work if not their inability to coordinate or communicate interdepartmentally. He becomes a security expert they all seek but laments the lack of openness and the attack on trust that is required in the academic world in order to facilitate networking and the exchange of ideas. A really good story and there is a pretty good recipe for chocolate cookies on page 155.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice reading with good technical coverage
"The Cuckoo's Egg" is a good book on computer hacking and espionage . It covers well all technical aspects involved in the case, stuff like UNIX, Tymnet and the very begining of system cracking.

4-0 out of 5 stars America should always listen to Baden.
This thoughtful and interesting book showed that this medical examiner stands above the others.More people should have listened to his evidence in the O. J. Simpson case. In case after case, his careful examinations brought justice where others had failed. Baden is a giant in hsi profession.
