5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
My book arrived within five days of placing my order, which was wonderful because I started class the very next day. There was some writing in it as described, but I don't care because it's a book, and as long as I can read the text, that's all that's really important. Anyway, the book was in great condition, it was the right edition, and it's easy to read. Thanks for the great service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reason It's a CLASSIC! (9th Ed./InfoTrac Incl.)
"Must-have" if you're interested in law or law school bound...Superb reference and learning book (there is also a Study Guide -- harder to find); you'll keep this book for years of use! If you take a Criminal Justice course, this is the text you should hope the prof demands. It is truly the best out there.Yes, it's pricy - but worth every dollar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If only our government had listened...
This book first came out in the mid-1990s. If only the U.S. government had listened to the Israelis and the author, who increasingly had warned the U.S., or tried to, of the growing jihadist threat, not just around the world, but also inside the U.S (the Israelis had known of Islamic terrorists in places like Oklahoma city, etc. in the 1990s). At one point in this book, the author states that the threat is growing and "it is only a matter of time before they strike the United States, from within". Very true, unfortunately. This book costs less than $ 20, and yet, the CIA could have learned more from it than the billions they spend every year "monitoring" terrorists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Volume Deserves Ten Stars
As you read this book, you will appreciate just how prescient Benjamin Netanyahu was. There is no doubt that Netenyahu's theses, penned in 1995, now inform the War on Terror, which began taking shape only after the attacks of September 11, 2001. There are no wasted words in this slim volume. Yet, it is comprehensive with respect to the subject of radical Islamic militarism. The author provides a modern history of terrorism, and dissects with a sharp scalpel the errors of Israeli and Western governments that tried, and failed, to tame the forces of terrorism through appeasement. If there is any bright side to the horrors emanating from the failed Oslo accords it is that they illustrate just how NOT to fight terrorism. Netanyahu has a solid grasp of history and international relations. He prescribes our next steps and explains how to defeat terrorism. He is clear-eyed and sober.I hope the leaders of the world will pay heed to his words.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased
This book is chalk full of biases and fallacies - especially regarding gun ownership.
2-0 out of 5 stars Required text for a course
I don't actually believe in sociology and I think Mr. Thio's reasoning is mushy at many points. If you're thinking of paying full-price at your campus bookstore for the current edition, think again. The author mainly updates the pictures each year and tosses in a few new references - if you buy a coffee for the guy next to you he'll probably let you skim his new addition before the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biased book
I did not care for the subject matter in this book in part because everyone is deviant by the standards of the power elite (except for the power of elite). Homocides are donw by poor minorities, homosexuals are sexually deviants, and the list continues. The book is one sided throughout even down to the last chapters regardingpeople that are over weight. If you enjoy arguing this is the right book, if not stay open minded when the teacher requests that you discuss it. I had to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important addition to the literature on street organizations
Few books are currently available on street organizations (commonly referred to by sociologists, anthropologists and criminologists as "gangs") that present both an insider perspective and outsider analysis, and place these social formations into the context of both the contemporary and historical variables that cause their formation, and direct their transformation into radical political organizations.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on the Topic
As with most books on organized crime, this is a textbook. It is, in my opinion, the best textbook on this topic available. I have taught organized crime at the university level for a number of years now and have looked at a wide variety of textbooks. This book is superior to the others in a number of ways. First, it is comprehensive. There is a tendency of some authors to become infatuated with the Italian Mafia to the exclusion of all else. That does not happen with Lyman and Potter. Second, it is balanced-the authors differentiate between myths and facts concerning organized crime, something often missing in other books. Finally, the authors include both theoretical explanations of organized crime and linkages between OC, government, and honest citizens. The fact that organized crime cannot exist without the connivance of government and the public is critical to understanding the existence and success of criminal enterprises and is often ignored by authors. This relationship is a major theme of this text; one that sets it above other books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes!Buy this book and give it to friends as well
Let them know you like Pyrates! Be a Pyrate from time to time, but don't kill or mame anyone. This is an incredible book, full of information, non-stop action, and because it is written by Defoe, Johnson, or whomever it was written by - someone in the time of the actual pyrates being mentioned, it weilds a sense of authenticity that hits you up side the head like no other. If these men (and women) of seafaring bravado were among us today they would have been very pleased with the outcome of this book rather than the show-boat affairs of Disney. However, some parts of the book are graphic, realistic, and perhaps readers under the age of 13 should be prepared.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved by Captain Johnson?
If you are a fan of Defoe and want to read about pyrates and their cutlasses then this is the book you need.It was published under the name of Captain Charles Johnson, no doubt to protect its author from the retaliation of ones such as Captain Avery - then in England - whose case the book deals with first.Avery had had a play written about (or by) him called The Successful Pirate, and a book called The King of the Pirates, and A General History of the Pyrates is a scathing attack against their pretentions.Because of his history as a pirate Avery would not have been able to visit the naval records office to check up on his adversary, hence the security and reason presumably for the name.Subsequent research in the naval records have shown that no such fish as Captain Charles Johnson had existed. His name is fictional.
5-0 out of 5 stars General History of Pyrates
As to the author of this book, I personally do not believe it was Daniel Defoe and I have done a certain amount of research on the subject. There is no evedence supporting the theory that I can see, besides one man's idea, which proves nothing. The mysterious Captain Johnson is himslef the author, and none else.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Painful but educational reading for Congolese generations
This book is an outstanding piece of work that reflects the author's intellectual honesty and his passion for the truth. A truth that has been hidden and distorted in so many ways, for so long. Ludo De Witte's detailed account of The Assassination of Lumumba finally makes a breakthrough. The book is both enlightening and disturbing but, above all, educational. While providing powerful and troubling data about this horrific event, it also helps to understand the facts from the context of the struggle against the neo-colonial order in which they occurred.4-0 out of 5 stars The Ghost of Patrice Lumumba
You may recall Adam Hochschild's book of a couple years ago where he intimated that KING LEOPOLD'S GHOST remains a malevolent force guiding the carnage that is taking place in the present day Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Well here's one for the Congolese. Forty years after his assassination Patrice Lumumba remains a haunting presence, forever reminding Belgium of its past misdeeds in Africa. Broader still his death bears testimomy to the fact that so much of what Europe and our government talks about as human rights concerns is self-serving and empty rhetoric.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have for investigators
For those who don't know the name, Rossmo is the detective / mathematician whose pioneering work on criminal profiling in Canada has helped re-shape the way investigators worldwide track down serial offenders. By mathematically studying the location and distribution of crimes, Rossmo developed a way of pinpointing the most likely location of the offender's home base. This book explains his work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ground breaking and well researched
This book is a real innovation in the field of crime research. The area of criminal profiling is populated by no shortage of Walter Mittys with no empirical grounding, so is it refreshing to find a text that cements the theories of this complex and fascinating area with empirical analysis of real cases. The text is well written and opens up a new area of criminal behaviour analysis to students and police officers alike. This book will undoubtedly become a key text in the field of criminal profiling and a welcome replacement to the long list of dull criminal psychology books that do not tell you anything useful, because the ivory tower authors have no practical experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide to the Subject

5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Research Book
The pioneering research work of Robert Ressler, Ann Burgess and John Douglass is presented in startling statistical detail.Thirty-six sexual murderers were interviewed: the data about their motivations, drives, and fantasies was catalogued and indexed in insightful graphic detail. Perhaps the psychological, predatory horror that lurks in the minds of serial killers will never be fully understood, but Douglass, Burgess, and Ressler's work offers some stunning insights into the mind-set of some of today's most horrific sexual killers.
5-0 out of 5 stars The textbook on Criminal Profiling
Indepensible. The textbook for criminal profilers and forensic investigators.A scholarly colossal work of invaluable and useful information.Ressler builds a very convincing case for the statisical analysis and identification of serial killers types.
