5-0 out of 5 stars Interested in Offshore Racing? Meet your idol, Mr Don Aronow
If you have an interest in offshore racing, take the time and read this compelling book about the father of the the industry. Ever heard of Thunderboat row? Find out the impact he had on some of the largest manufacturers in the country, and their attempts to to keep him out of the boat building business. You will learn about the rise and murder of Don Aronow and how state law enforcement of Florida(at the time led by the infamous Janet Reno) either bungled the investigation, or for whatever reason, let his death go unsolved. You will learn of the allegation that Don Aronow had ties to the mob, South American drug smugglers, and to the DEA. At the end you can surmise what you will of what his life was about, but you can't take away what he meant to the sport of offshore racing. Read it and pay homage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent . . . A Must for the boater and mob afficionado!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Foucault's Disicpline
Foucault's "Discipline and Punish," is an excellent read. On point in his breakdown and analysis of where our modern day system of prison come from; readers will find this book well written easily understanble in its translation of the history of the prison system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
For the people saying that this book is dense, impenetrable, hard to understand, etc., I would suggest simply going a little slower and, if possible, studying other works by Foucault in order to get used to his style. Among Foucault's books, I think this is probably the "easiest" to read in that the motives of its writing are clear, the themes are laid out for you in black and white, and the documented evidence/archival history that he returns to time and time again is at least documented and built on solidly. Foucault had a way with seeing history in new ways, this book is a beautiful demonstration of that, it uncovers and unveils currents at work within history other than the "accepted" or "offered" ones, one of his favorite projects, and as such...I think it's essential. As with his other books, though, be prepared for bold, grand statements and stylistic flourishes that are not always backed up with demonstrated evidence, but...he knew that part of writing was rhetoric. He states his case, and does so with amazing eloquence...this is a very powerful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE
I bought the book on a recommendation a year back and tried to read it but failed to concentrate enough as it was a pretty dense book. Recently I picked it up again, this time determined to finish it as it is considered an important work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best
Fisher provides the absolute, hands-down best text out there for basic crime scene work. This is the one that is in everyone's bookshelf - we even keep all our old editions! When I began working in crime scene investigations, this was my 'go-to' reference, and several years later, I still read through it every once in a while to keep fresh.I teach part time, and this was the book my co-instructor and I suggested that we use for our basic and advanced crime scene classes - thank goodness it's our new text!I can't wait to share Fisher with our students.Invaluable book.

Eye opener to the social structure within the prison environment. After reading the book I felt confident in my ability to withstand the mind games inmates try to pull everyday.I recommend the book to all new nurses in our prison.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thompson's Best
In my opinion it doesn't get more gonzo than this.Thompson goes in and becomes a part of this degraded and bizarre world, promising a keg of beer to his friends after the book is finished.Although he never did give them that keg of beer,he got his butt kicked for not going it.I believe that sets things even.
5-0 out of 5 stars "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man."
R.I.P. Hunter S. Thompson.We barely knew ya.
5-0 out of 5 stars WIREBIRDS ON FIREWHEELS
Hell's Angels is an all-time enduring classic by the late "Gonzo" journalist Hunter S. Thompson. It is a very interactive, very detailed description of one's affiliation with the dreaded motorcycle outlaws known as the Hell's Angels. The writing style is quite fascinating, for if it were not based on actual accounts or the interpretations thereof, it would be a most fascinating series of pulp fiction stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Devils Highway
Not being a avid reader ,if a book doesn't interest me in the first few pages I put it away. This certainly was not such a book. Written by a Mexican American I expected the story to be slanted toward anti immigration only to find a balanced view of the Border situation from the prospective of those desperate to make a better life for their familys, to the Border Patrol and the almost impossible job before them. Two things that stand out are the compassion of the Border Patrol and how the immigrants are so often preyed upon by their own people. A must read before making a judgement about our border situation and the people who live {and die} there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misplaced Sympathy for an Invading Army
It seems like this book has appeal for the come one, come all immigration proponents and multiculturalism fanatics.I take no joy in hearing the stories of human suffering, whether it be south of the border or elsewhere, but there is a heavy cost for allowing millions of mexicans into America. Many locales with large illegal immigrant populations have seen a sharp increase in violent crime and gang activity.
5-0 out of 5 stars He may as well have been...
Jonathan Miles of MEN'S JOURNAL wrote this of Urrea's sublime tribute to the immigrant's journey, "A tour de force account of an adventure unlike the ones you're used to reading."And it's true. What makes THE DEVIL'S HIGHWAY shine is Urrea's ability to lend his novelist's eye to a story more true than most of us would like to imagine. For whatever side you hold in the Border debate, Urrea will make you believe in the people who walk. Even if he doesn't pull you toward empathy for those taking this journey, he will at least illuminate for you what happens to a group of men who feel like crossing the infamous Devil's Highway is the only option. From their first step into the desert to their rescue just short of the U.S. border, you will not want to put this book down.Urrea takes the magnifying glass that is the Border Control Issue and focuses that hot sun down to a small group later called the Wellton 26.Literally. Every step through this Pulitzer Prized Finalist will force you onto the desert with these men : walking with these men, following with these men, thirsting with these men, and dying with these men. Urrea has made me want to keep going.Luckily, in the rear of the book, he's given me more with suggested readings to further my lusty desire to ingest all I can about this issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Turvey demystifies criminal profiling
This book by Mr. Turvey offers a lucid and comprehensive overview of criminal profiling. Contrary to popular belief, criminal profiling is not science per se but rather a collection of subjective views offered by renowned criminal profilers. Most of these views have not been scientifically corroborated and according to Turvey there is no concensus amongst criminal profilers on this subject. Turvey holds that much more scientific research is required in order to substantiate many claims. What separates Turvey's book from most books on this subject is his refusal to make sensationalistic assertions. Every major theory is explained clearly and both its strengths and flaws are accounted for. Inductive and deductive methods are reviewed extensively and meticulously and it becomes readily apparent to the reader that criminal profiling has been only somewhat beneficial in a few cases. In most cases, criminal profilers have failed to offer an accurate profile of the perpetrator, small wonder given the extreme complexity of human nature.
1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
Don't waste your money on this book.As a professor of Criminology, I found Mr. Turvey's approach to be quite juvenile in it's theories.Mr. Tuvey's analysis often contradicts itself in following chapters.I advise my students that there are far better books about criminal profiling on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Text in Crime Scene Behavior Analysis
Mr. Turvey has done an outstanding job in assembling and presenting critical, fundamental concepts on behavioral analysis of crimes and criminals based upon what the physical evidence describes. The introduction by John Thornton, PhD, one of the worlds leading forensic scientists and authors is an endorsement that says it all. Each human act is unique in the context of the mindset of the offender and his behavior at the time of the crime. This book describes the effective analyis and interpretation based upon the uniqueness of each crime scene evidence and event, keeping the investigator on track. This book should be required reading for all "introduction to criminal investigation" classes for both law enforcement and the defense bar. The book demonstrates the importance of merging and considering all aspects of victimology, forensic science, psychology and good old fashioned investigative work. Mr. Turvey does an excellent job of promoting the deductive, individualized analysis of a crime. Although it is tempting to look at the "statistical" data of similar scenes, the inductive process can be distracting and misleading. Yes, he takes a few jabs at some of FBI's legends, however it is more likely that he attacks the process and not the individual. For those of us who have worked with the Feds and enjoyed their friendship, it does evoke a chuckle or two... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Into the mind of the killer
What makes Chikatilo fascinating is that it took so long for him to be caught, and the reasons for this delay. He was incredibly lucky, in some ways, but the structure of laws, customs and means of communication in the Russia of the time are the real reasons for his long career as a killer. Conradi explains all of this clearly. What is not so clear are the details of how all of the info he presents was acquired. Did the author have access to confession documents, or interrogation documents? If so, the readers would sure like to see them included in the book. Overall, a very readable, informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Shocking!
This is quite shocking of how the mafia is able to buy off members of both major political parties in the U.S. along with other Western nations such as Israel.I would also recommend reading Double Cross about Sam and Chuck Giancana the two mafia bosses whom had the Kennedys in their pockets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inciteful and Highly Readable
A real eye-opener. Friedman writes about some pretty ruthless, cruel people. I don't know how the author could have possibly obtained all the information that he did; he is a brave man. I hope he's still alive, and will be amazed if he is, given the nature of the people about whom he has written. Friedman describes Russian Mafiya types operating in Toronto, near to where I live -- very unnerving. Mind you, if you live in NYC, Miami, Denver, San Francisco or Los Angeles, you are not alone...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information.
Friedman has done the public a service by this book.It renews my faith that there are a few, albeit an extremely small number, jews who will tell the truth.

While this book does address a variety of necessary topics and its overall praise is well-deserved there is a gap, which means there is still a need for a textbook in forensic entomology. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Forensic Entomology
This work is extraordinarily useful to any death investigation professional. It provides an extensive overview of all aspects of forensic entomology with chapter contributions from the leading forensic entomologists in the United States and Canada. It is expertly written so that the investigator with no formal entomological training can easily understand the context of the book, while still on a level that other formally trained entomologists will find very useful. It is richly illustrated with over 150 color photos of insects of forensic importance. This allows investigators to immediately recognize forensic insects at the scene so that collection can be assured. This book is certain to become an invaluable reference for anyone in the field of forensic entomology, or those involved in the collection of entomological evidence from a death scene. It is a perfect complement to the other works published on the subject by K.G.V. Smith and E.P. Catts. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars No Footnotes
I'm about a third of the way through the book; very provocative so far.Unfortunately, my copy has no footnotes. The notes are at the end of the chapters as you'd expect, but the numbers they reference are not in the text.Tends to complicate a serious academic reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars A riposte to free market cheerleaders
"Illicit" by Moises Naim is a good primer on the underground economy. Mr. Naim's experience as an Editor at Foreign Policy magazine appears to have helped the author hone his skills at synthesizing an impressive quantity of third-party research to support his thesis. It is also evident that Mr. Naim's discussions with numerous high-level personal and professional contacts around the world have helped him reflect on the topic at length, leading him to offer many pages of thoughtful critique and analysis. The end result is a balanced and nuanced book that makes a valuable contribution to our understanding about an increasingly urgent and worrisome problem.

"In todays labyrinthine routings of contraband across multiple contients, front companies are easy to set up, dozens in order to blur one's trace. As a result intermediaries in international commerce of illicit products, services , & humans have increased their profile and their profits. It is the brokers who control today's illicit markets, set the deals, & make the big money".This is a small snipet of the market place. The markets are just markets/ legal or illegal.Governments decide the righteousness of them.In other words: what is in a true market: cent$, can now be dollar$.It is the magic of a legalized highway robbery called the stroke a pen.Of course its a no brainer that governmemnts are getting greased to hell and back. Through corporate(legal/illegal) sugar daddys or just down and dity in your face corruption. It has penetrated deeply into the private sector, politics, and governments of today. It is penetrating markets deeper, plus horizontally and vertically, and in direct proportion to their profits that control crucial decisions within current national governments (U.S. included). In some cases the national interests are completely aligned with illegal profits. A must read for understanding the a whole picture the global economy. It is an entertaining and informative read. Welcome to globalization. And of course that is on either side of the border: because they own both sides! ... Read more
