5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
This book is an outstanding reference on crime scene investigation. Gardner writes from experience after many years with the US Army's Criminal Investigation Division, an agency known for their superb crime scene skills. Gardner's book covers the many facets of crime scene investigation with particular emphasis on documentation, one of the most important aspects. He presents the Army's 18-step method for crime scene processing which the reader will find to be an excellent model to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am hooked on Gordon Crews
This book was so informative.I was studying school violence but after reading this book I immediately purchased "Chasing Shadows."Dr. Crews is so insightful with his writings that I became enthralled with juvenile violence.I look forward to reading more books by Gordon Crews.

Editorial Review

Laura Kipnis, who teaches film at Northwestern University, adopts an unpopular stance: that of speaking for those whose sexual tendencies stray from the acceptable path. As such, she adds a different perspective in the always-raging debate on the role of pornography in America. Among her arguments is that pornography is often overlooked as a class issue, couched instead almost always as a morality matter. Realizing that many of those employed by the sex industry and those who support it are separated by class from those who deem it so unsavory, provides a particular insight into the perspective of those sitting in judgment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is the future of porn studies
The author of the Kirkus Review (above) states that Kipnis's work would be "more at home at an MLA conference," while at the same time he contends her work is "not likely to inspire the dawning of a new eraof pornography studies."But what could signal the dawning of such anera as well as a presentation by Kipnis at an MLA conference? You can'thave it both ways, Kirkus.4-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opening, mind-expanding look at "filth"
Kipnis adds her distinctive study to the growing chorus of books by women that have defended and explored pornography dispassionately in the last five years.(See, for example, Nadine Strossen's _Defending Pornography_ and Wendy McElroy's _XXX:A Woman's Right to Pornography_.)Kipnis takes as her jumping-off point the case of a gentle, well-behaved gay man who was given a long jail sentence for responding to fantasy bait concocted by the FBI on the Internet;somehow, discussion (read: Orwellian "thought crime") of sex and murder of children translated to hard time in jail.Mere ideas are NOT innocent in this country, after all.[But why don't we jail authors and fans of murder mysteries and true crime books, or at least TRACK them?)She goes on to study the odd byways of pornography: magazines of nude and copulating fat people, geriatric porn, transvestite pornography. If you've never seen such material and tend to assume it must connect to mental illness and criminality, Kipnis will give you much to think about. Her discussion of the ideology and techniques of Hustler magazine is nothing short of brilliant, even for the men -- and we are legion -- who have always found the magazine disgusting or beneath notice.A welcome addition to the public debate over durdy peek-chures ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful indictment of the death penalty in America
This book, written by a Catholic nun, is a powerful indictment of the death penalty in America. She describes in vivid detail her role as "spiritual adviser" to two death row inmates, and in graphic detail, describes their deaths at the hands of the state.

Dead Man Walking
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth considering
Sister Helen's case is a highly serious and convincing one, and she has bolstered it by the results of detailed and careful investigations which she has incorporated on top of her experience as a spiritual adviser to delinquents, whose executions she watched in person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading For New Or Future Cops
I am a graduate of a criminal justice program and was recently was hired by a small city department and expect to head off to the academy soon. I came across this book and decided to buy a copy to further prepare myself for the job. Given my interest in law enforcement I found it very interesting and I think it will be a good preparation for both what I will learn "hands-on" at the academy and what I will actually face as a police officer. Each chapter talks about a part of the police officer's job like responding to alarms, filing reports, and dealing with the community. A large section of the book is dedicated to traffic stops and related situations, such as searches, sobriety tests, etc., which I thought was good because it is what a lot of officers do in most parts of the country. For each topic, there are several scenarios with questions asking what you would do. Theses are probably meant for a criminal justice class with others to discuss answers with, but even on my own I thought they were fun to read and a way of envisioning what I would do the first time I face something similar. Overall, I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to be or is going to be a police officer. It offers a good look at what situations officers really face and the scenarios even give you a preview of the important decisions officers have to make every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recognize Deceptive Signals in Speech & Body Language
This thoroughly researched and practical book was written by Stan Walters, a retired police interrogation specialist with over 25 years' experience. The purpose of his book is to help interrogators rely on highly successful and proven techniques in recognizing deceptive behaviors in speech quality, speech content, and especially body language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Principles Of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation
Being a Stan Walters devotee I was pleased to find yet another rivetting publication by the guru of kinesics. Stans writing is refreshing and makes for interesting reading. The content itself is on the button. Excellent reference material for those in the business of detecting deception. I integrated the techniques described by Stan Walters with Statement Analysis techniques and find that I am now far more successful at what I do. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible editing, but there isn't much else out there to use ....
Horrible editing that SHOULD embarrass the company.Watch out for the typos and some logic errors, but there isn't much else out there to help you so ... this book is probably your only choice.Don't buy it, just use the copy from your local library or the copy at Barnes & Nobles / Walden's so you don't have to waste your money on it.Good luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get this book for the new ICE test.....not the TEA book!
I took this test in Philly a few monts ago and passed!I owe my passing to this book.I would suggest you study the that came with the packet. The math was like that, but much harder. Review the math in the arco book. The logical reaoning was very easy (because I read the logicals in this book and thought they were tough! The math was the hards, so just study the book. The last section of the exam is very easy...grammar and spelling.Use this book and good luck@

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Prep
I just took the test today and I wanted to write this while it was still fresh in my mind. This is a very good book to prepare you for the exam if you have a pretty strong math and reading background. If this is so, this is the only book you will need but be careful of the typos. There were many typos and when they appeared in the math section, they obviously create real serious problems. My advice, if you don't have a strong background like me, is to buy this and the Learning Express Book. Read my review on that book as well. GOOD LUCK! ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Americans are frightened and outraged by violent crime and their frustration at not being able to stop it. Bashing the insanity defense is universally seen as a way of getting tough on crime. Ironically, as we all seem to abdicate responsibility for our own lives, we seem to assert that everyone else, even the mentally impaired, is responsible for his." 4-0 out of 5 stars Passionate indictment of court treatment of insanity issues
In this timely, interesting book, psychologist Barbara R. Kirwin writes of her experience as a forensic psychologist in the New York City area.Kirwin did most of her evaluations and testimony on behalf of the prosecution, but her writing does not suffer from a prosecutorial bias.Rather, Kirwin attacks the treatment of insanity issues in the courts from a perspective outside traditional categories.5-0 out of 5 stars Agoodvoice of common sense.
Excellent book dealing with topics such as faking bad and faking good, malingering, and understanding of the workings of the criminal mind as s/he comes into contact with the justice system. Other important issues arediscussed such as the effect of the media in the courtroom, and thequestion of common sense at the end of the day after all the legalise hassaid its piece.Other highlights include reaction of jurors and judges inthe face of the presentations layers make who are essentially interested inwinning for their client. A justice system should be able to come to thetruth and act on that at the end of the day, rather than how good oneslawyer is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Criminals Don't Just Surface
This book doesn't contain a lot of great information, but it DOES make a few great points.Dr. Kirwin makes a fine statement when she says "Any criminal is a long time in the making, and there are many clear signs alongthe way." Amen, sister! One of the biggest responsibilities society hasshirked is admitting when a failure is in the making. Law enforcement wouldalso benefit by NOT believing serial killers are quiet, unknown men wholive unseen in the community. Bullfeathers! They are the outstandingweirdoes that we pretend don't exist. Dr. Kirwin also hits hard on the lackof accountability in the judicial system. As she puts it "no continuity, nofollow-up." 1-0 out of 5 stars A deeply dishonest book by an of-so-trendy academic
This book is about the "broken windows" model of policing, which was put into action by Bill Bratton in New York City.Despite the fact that the crime rate in New York City has plummetted after this new style of policing was put into effect, Professor Harcourt hates broken windows policing. He tries to get you to agree with him by making two arguments, which contradict one another.
5-0 out of 5 stars Volume demonstrates why idiots so often disregard academics
B. Harcourt is an expert who debunks myths in law enforcement. His findings are against common sense and may sound ridiculous to readers (and policymakers alike) with an IQ below 70, yet he has a point and makes it in a clear and well written style. Unlike superficial studies, his book goes through substantial analyses and details, which are necessary to document the case he makes. A recommended reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars DISPELLS the MYTHS ASSOCIATED with the CURRENT DOCTRINE ...
This work may be best suited for students of Criminology who are required to demonstrate their knowledge and skill in conducting their own research somewhere along the continuum from Community Oriented Policing to Intelligence Led Policing. The highly academic style is replete with methodical concerns, including the value of empirical evidence, and research jargon such as regression analysis, correlation of variables, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for Document Examiners and Attorneys
Mr.Hilton's review of Document Examination is all encompassing. He covers the entire realm of documents made by pen, pencil, typewriter, adding machines, cash registers, check writers, impression stamps, paper examination and trace markings on documents such as latent fingerprints, impressed writing and accidental markings. He discusses how identification is made and more importantly, when identification can not be made. I have read his book many times, as a document examiner and highly recommend it to both document examiners and attorneys. Mr. Hilton covers what the attorney needs to know in preparation for trial and how to handle a questioned document case in court.

5-0 out of 5 stars The basic book for an professional approach
It's very important book for people who usally work in document examination, especially at goverment labs. I usally read that book every year (again & again!) and I always find something new for the documents examination. In my country we say "It's the A and the Z of our work" or "It's the start & the end on our work". It's a baseline book for every document examiner. J.D.Makris Athens,Greece ... Read more

Pretty good read, it did repeat the info quite a bit over and over.
4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!
A very graphic and well written book.Gives you the real inside look at the hells angels motorcycle club and and other clubs as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 can keep A Secret ... an outstanding read!!
I thought the book was an outstanding read and in fact have read the book several times.I have no idea why some reviewers want to critique Mr. Lavigne's writing style or "vulgar" word selection so harshly. He is, after all, writing about the Hells Angels.I feel these folks are missing the main point of the book which is to give the reader and insightful look into the bike gang, their rituals, codes etc.To this end, Mr. Lavigne does an outstanding job!I found the book to be a very comprehensive portrait of the most famous of biker gangs. If these readers were so offended by some of Mr. Lavignes language, choice of words whatever then they need not be worried with researching the Hells Angels!Simply put, the book is by far the best and most insightful look into the inner workings of the Hells Angels that I have ever read - and I have read most all of the books on the Hells Angels out there.I strongly recommend it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting History
An interesting bit of history on the worlds largest motorcycle club
3-0 out of 5 stars insights into a secretive organization from the man who knows it best
This may be the most difficult review that I have written to date because I began reading this book with a certain amount of prejudice. I have ridden motorcycles for about forty years and I began at about the time that the Hell's Angels motorcycle club was coming to national prominence, so it seems as though I have been hearing stories of the Angels all of my life.
3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read
Bottom line up front, this book is well worth reading. The writing style is neither peotic nor amateurish, but it is blunt. He is biased, but makes no efforts to hide it.He has strong opinions, and is not afraid to voice them.In other words, reading the book is like sitting in a bar listening to Sonny Barger tell you about his life over a few beers. It is a refreshing perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know what you are looking at
I am a graduate student of Dr. Hickey's at California State University, Fresno.I came to this institution specifically as a matter of curricula, and I must say that after a review of the literature both broad and exhaustive Dr. Hickey's book is the closest thing we have to the reality of our special killers' doctrine. What is most compelling about this piece of literature is the open mentality that is greatly lacking in nearly every other book out there. We have relied to a great extent on the works of the FBI and, in a much more aniquated way, the works of Freud and the general positivists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but I really like the CD-ROM
This is an excellent reference book, but what really makes it stand out is the "Mind of a Killer" CD-ROM included with it.

After reviewing and studying the material within this cover, you will see life in a different way. We all want to see the good in people; As any physical realm, there is the duality from good to evil. What exactly happens when what we see the destructive nature of man? What makes the destructive destructive? Who are they? What do they think? Where do they come from? and What will they do next?

Plain and simple, this book is terrible. The fact that the author went through the hood of L.A did not make up for how poorly this book was written. I can tell off the bat that this book was written by a white author who knows nothing about gangs. Advice: do alot of research first then the interviews. (She lucky it wasnt after the Rodney King incident when she stroll through the hood).Would you buy a documentry book about the stock market written by a gang banger?

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting characters, caring, non-judgemental narrator
The characters that were the voices in this book were very interesting and had great stories. There was everything to wannabes, baby homies, OGs and those on their way up to OG status, ex-homegirls that were blinded by being shot in the neck, a young teenage lil' homie who drove himself to the hospital after being shot in the stomache, and the families that lived with 'em. I really liked hearing their dialogue, a brief history of how gangs may have came about, and a listing of the different sets over the different streets. The narrator was a strange element to the story because she was just a white older lady that obviously had never done anything remotely gangster in her life. However, she was non judgemental, caring, and sincere, so I couldn't be too upset about that. All in all, great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Point of reference
Inspite of all the hype and controversy centering mainly on Leon Bings race and sex, this book is an valuable resource for gang research if for no other reason than it was the vehicle which led to the Monster Kody autobiography. There are many holes in the structure of the book in relation to use of slang but that is understandable considering the author was obviously out of her element with this project.Once again I would suggest reading this title for the early account of Monster Kody who was just emerging from one of his many jail stints. The interview with Kody is far and away the highlight of the book even if the cover photo is a pathetic attempt to portray the danger of a murderous gang member as sexy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The book you will use for years.
This is the book that I go to when people ask me about criminal law procedure. The text is comprehensive from investigation and examination to execution of sentencing. If your CJ curriculum uses this book and you are debating on whether to buy it, buy it. I have an earlier version and although it may be dated, it would be in case law only. Because of the breadth of information compiled in this text, I used this book alone for a ton of my classes.

As the Training Program Assistant at the Calcasieu Parish Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy, I would like to express that this textbook is a wonderful addition to our facility during the cadet's fifty-two hour Criminal Procedure block of instruction. The attending cadet's have considered these textbooks as their bestfriend during their basic training sessions and have given high reviews. At this time we are currently looking into the possible purchase of the fourth or fifth edition of this textbook for our future basic sessions. ...
