4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to comprehension of bin Laden
This is the third book I've read on terrorism and was the best by far. Not only does it take the reader through the important points of bin Laden's life and the historical events that surround them, but the author also analyzes the larger context within world politics. I particularly enjoyed the analysis of the strategic importance of Stinger missiles in the past and the future.
1-0 out of 5 stars Know your facts before reading this book
Warning, before reading this book make sure you are well schooled in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, US involvement with Somalia, the Persian Gulf War, and Islam. The more you know about these subjects the more you will realize that Bergen interjects his political opinions throughout the book with side comments; by selectively adding some facts and leaving out others; and by the clever arrangements of facts.Bergen is biased against the US and eerily; the net affect is some sort of weird admiration for OBL.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Was Good....But Bin Laden's Mistress
This book had a lot of technical stuff, but I still really enjoyed it.

Editorial Review

There are two ways to look at this bestseller by Watergate scoopmeister Woodward. First, it's an original take on Clinton's sex scandal, framing it as the latest consequence of Nixon's assault on the U.S. political system. Woodward sketches each president's tussles with scandal managing after Watergate permanently turned up the press heat on the White House. Ford lies about a meeting concerning a potential deal to pardon Nixon, but remains convinced he did nothing wrong. Carter's pious advocacy of truth telling backfires when he's confronted with conundrums involving his pal Bert Lance, the fallout from CIA-provided hookers, and cash for King Hussein. Reagan's men try to make him understand the lies and shocking wrongness of the Iran-Contra debacle, but he simply, stubbornly doesn't get it. And by the time prosecutors interview Reagan in 1992, he's so ill he can't remember his own oldest friends and advisers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside of the White House
Another Bob Woodward book, another masterpiece. I am getting great pleasure from his books. Detailed research, witnesses, and main character interviews are combined to revealed truth with every respect. In Shadows, he discovers the last five presidents scandals and events around them. Book starts with Ford, Nixon and Watergate, This is the most interesting chapter of the book, and it is explained with every detail. Secondly, Carter and payment made to Jordan King and Iran Hostage crisis. You can feel Carter's pain in this chapter. After that, of course Reagan andIran-Contra weapon sale and Oliver North incident. This chapter is also very interesting. The role Regan and Senior Bush is much different than public knows. Senior Bush's role is very controversial. There are always something learn from his books. When Senior Bush was at the White House, subject is the war again. First gulf war and Saddam stories given. There is also little bit information about Bush-Saudi relations in that time. Inevitable, Mr. Bandar's name is also here. Finally, Clinton era, Whitewater and Monica. This is also very big chapter. In Whitewater investigation is explained very well. Also Monica scandal is the fun part of the book. Star and Clinton have not a bad relation as we know.
4-0 out of 5 stars The effect the Independent Counsel had on the Presidency
I think this is a pretty good book on the Presidency of the United States since Watergate.Of course, Mr. Woodward played a significant role in reporting Watergate and has written extensively about the Presidency since then.5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, disturbing look at the presidency

Editorial Review

It began with a phone call. On January 12, 1998, Deputy Independent Counsel Jackie Bennett talked to a woman named Linda Tripp, who claimed to have potentially incriminating evidence against President Clinton. Bennett passed this information along to his boss, Kenneth Starr, who then decided it was worth pursuing. Though they knew they would catch some heat for it, it was a chance they were willing to take. In a prophetic, and ultimately understated, comment, Bennett declared: "We're really going to be criticized on this someday." He had no idea. Susan Schmidt and Michael Weisskopf's Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Ken Starr, another rightwing hack masking Bush/Cheney !!!
Let's see. Ken Starr wastes the public money attacking Bill Clinton with false accusations while at the same time siding with KON-servative Mitch Mcconnel of KY to allow for more corrupt campaigns as if there aren't any already !!! This book is a perfect tool for neconservative NAZIS to enjoy and drool over but is otherwise useless trash for the rest of us who are already facing mass destruction by Bush/Cheney/Rove/Delay and GOP with of course a spineless opposition that barely got together to defend Clinton but easily caved into and defended Bush the liar-in-chief !

5-0 out of 5 stars Power over truth
So Bill Clinton had his men muscle poor Ken Starr who did a fabulous job exposing this infidel. Clinton was disbarred and impeached but still allowed to finish his term, hand out pardons to criminals, steal furniture from the white house and take the economy right down the toilet.1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This smarmy little work of personal opinion, conjecture andgossip fits in neatly with its subject: independent counsel Kenneth Starr and the private lives of any human being that had any contact with President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary. Highly recommend wearing your gloves to keep the oil off your hands. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our crimes and hatred against one another
I can only look at the events of September 11, 2001 in a spiritual sense. After those terrible acts, I went to church to seek solace, pray for the victims and their families and also pray for the perpetrators. All humans are members of God's family despite the atrocities we commit against each other and we all will face God on Judgement Day.Therefore, I don't believe that the terrorists won: their hatredwas and is totaly alien to God's nature and wishes for God's children and I believe they will suffer eternally. And, as Reverend Jakes wrote in his sermon, Jesus took many to be with him at the end of their lives.Christ is the Christian's hope and light in the terrible darkness we are walking through today. His love is a salve to me as it is to many others. The author's in this book accurately pointed out the many mistakes American politicians have made in foreign policy and have supported evil when it was to in their minds, advantageous to America. This book is well-written and I believe a must-read for those of us who are seeking answers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated junk.
This book was relevant at the time it came out, if nothing for the fact it helped pump the patriotism and zeal to go to war.
2-0 out of 5 stars A tame book that adds nothing of value

4-0 out of 5 stars Like Being a Fly on the Wall in the White House
Bush at War was the first book that I have read by Bob Woodward. Of course, I am somewhat familiar with Woodward's work and his reputation as one of the greatest living journalists. But, "current events" is not a subject that I normally look for when choosing literature. The idea behind Bush at War intrigued me though. Here we have a presidential administration obviously very fond of secrecy, but they are also willing to grant extensive interviews to Woodward -- one of the reporters that exposed the covert goings-on of another secretive White House. My curiosity was peaked.

3-0 out of 5 stars Puritanical virtues alive and well, but the economy?
This book was quite dumb, and all that it does is emphasize how dumb people can be. If you're a Republican right-winger who's more interested in a president's, a man's, sexcapades than what he does with the economy, then read on by all means. This mindless book was made for you.

This book was quite ridiculous.Although I applaud the author on his efforts, the book was among other things boring and without depth. The story somehow tries to paint Monica as highly intelligent, sure of what she wanted and able to speak her own mind. But she is also supposed to be lost, confused, and have low self esteem.Am I the only person who sees the contradiction here? 4-0 out of 5 stars April Safara Must Be an Idiot
Everyone else wrote an interesting, well thought-out review, but April Safara seems to be a total moron. Her review would even receive a failing grade in a fourth grade lit class. I'm surprised she was even able to read the book at all, considering how poor her literary skills are. Looks like you need a refresher course in Writing 101! Moron.

3-0 out of 5 stars Undecided...
Larry King is usually the background noise during dinner time in my (single) household so I pretend that I know him rather well.So when I started the book I expected the wise and experienced uncle to provide some wisdom and tell me about invaluable experiences.Well, it did not live up to that, especially in the first half of the book. But every now and again - moreso towards the end - I could hear him saying what he was writing.Much in the beginning just does not sound like him.1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointed
This book reminded me of a collage term paper being done at the last minute when you increase the font size and margins to try and stretch the meager text to the length requirement.I have never been a big fan of his interview show, but I was hoping given the amount of time he has been at it, he would have some interesting "during the break" type of stories from his guests. It turned out that this was not the case.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
I admire the guts it took to say these things in modern America, a land where political correctness stifles free expression as surely as McCarthyism ever did. And how soon Americans are forgetting September 11, 2001! It floors me how so many people think it is now just a sad day from a history book. More and worse is probably coming, folks, and Bill Maher is honest enough to say so in a message that caters to neither the right nor the left, simply dishes up (in a loud voice) pragmatic commentary on how we are messing up and what we should be doing to fix it. In this semi-survival manual, a collection of topical essays combined with WWII-style political posters updated for our times, some things get said that desperately needed saying. Yes, we Americans can do more to make ourselves safer. Yes, we Americans have a partially-deserved PR problem on the world stage, and yes, our enemies overseas are waiting patiently in a state of extreme motivation, to strike us again. I recommend this book to anyone, but especially those who are too timid to wake up to the reality that we are in a watershed moment in world history, a time in which the culture of enlightenment and freedom is under direct attack by a Medieval-minded foe who would have us descend into repression and totalitarianism. Actually, wait. I'll correct that. Our foe wants the repression and totalitarianism for himself. For us he wants an irradiated wasteland from sea to shining sea. So read this book. It's frequently funny, it's thought-provoking, and it says a lot that stands in contrast to the patriotic but empty drivel that passes for our national dialogue in 2006.

3-0 out of 5 stars Loose Hooks Sink Book
If only Bill Maher could turn his perceptive political insights into useful prescriptions for change, rather than cranky rants. Or in other words – great ideas, poor execution. Maher's basic concept in this book is that he wishes to compare the real sacrifices that Americans were proud to make in the World Wars with the completely empty gestures and false jingoism which are all Americans are willing to do in the current war on terror. For example, in the old days people actually tried to conserve food and fuel for the war effort. Nowadays, "patriots" continue our dependence on Middle Eastern dictators by buying gas-guzzling SUVs, then slap a cheap fake magnetic ribbon on the bumper and actually think they're helping win the war. Instead of a strong president who encourages us to make personal sacrifices and serve the nation, we have one who tells us to keep shopping and consuming, thus strengthening nobody but the corporations that make campaign contributions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Redeeming Factors
Like it or not, producer and anchor of "The O'Reilly Factor," Bill O'Reilly tells it like it is and how he sees it during his "no spin zone" portion of news at Fox.His writings in the book, "The O'Reilly Factor:The Good, the Bad, and the Completely Ridiculous in American Life," is more of a look into abiding social issues than late-breaking news, but if you like his show and his outspoken candor, you are sure to enjoy this book as much.Especially because he is able to "talk" more in-depth in this book, without the time cues of the show.I agreed with 85% of what Mr. O'Reilly had to say. With sharp wit and humor, parts of this book had me laughing out loud (especially his short story of meeting Elton John for the first time).Outlined in pith, are the chapters:
4-0 out of 5 stars To the point with a chuckle!
This is witty commentary on O'Reilly's basic pet peeves in American society. It is brief and not too heavy. Here are some pet peeves from a reader and viewer of Bill's:
4-0 out of 5 stars uplifting
Generosity, patience, honesty, and tolerance ( but not of evil).Truly American values.I'm glad I read this book, as I did find it uplifting. The values Mr. O'Reilly espouses are to be strived for, especially if America is to remain the great country it is, now and in the past.Thank you Mr. O'Oreilly for writing this book, and the O'Reilly Factorfor Kids which I also found to be an excellent read and an important one for a new generation of Americans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Irresistably preposterous-- But know what you are in for
Eszterhas the book writer is more intriguing and ideosyncratic than Eszterhas the screen writer.Be prepared for a 60's counter culture apologia pro vita sua with interesting detours (such as a tribute to Barry Goldwater).
3-0 out of 5 stars ?????
I tend to vote Republican but refuse to align myself with the Right Wing or Moral Majority. I'm the guy in the middle that the candidates are really after.I say that as any review on this book should be tempered by the politics of the reader.JE is an avowed Democrat with socialist leanings.Read his most recent book "American Animal" to verify this.So it was surprising as I read the first third of this book that after an initial bow to Clinton as the Rock & Roll Prez, one of "us", he then seems to chastise him for his fatal flaws. This part of the book is interesting, engaging, but also somewhat repetitive.I still couldn't wait to read it my allotted hour a night.4-0 out of 5 stars Decent and Deplorable- in prose from the spheres.
This is the truth! I never read any other of these exposes and during the majority of the media coverage of the episode that led to Clinton's impeachment- I switched to the animal planet. After reading some reviews on Amazon, I bought this book and I'm glad I did."The Comeback Kid" takes plenty of flack from the author, but Eszterhas spares none.I like the names: The Big Kielbasa- Wilt Chamberlain, "The Bag Lady of Sleaze"- Lucienne Goldberg, the lady who got the story into the media,"Hilla the Hun," "The Night Creature"- Nixon- "The Manchurian Candidate"- McCain- "The Rat Woman,"- Linda Tripp, it goes on to the current president named, "The Crown Prince."The coarsest individual does have the funniest lines, i.e.LBJ- too much to repeat here. The few who seem to get off lightly, like Monica, and believe it or not- Barry Goldwater and Newsweek Magazine who had the story and never printed it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He forces you to say 'yes' or 'no'
Sometimes I agree with O'Reilly and sometimes I disagree with him. The same is true with the topics in 'The No Spin Zone'. He outlines his position and forces guests to give a straight answer. Probably one of the weakest qualities of today's society is the inability [or unwillingness] to give a straight answer because someone may not like us. There will be reviewers who spew venom because they are pre-disposed to doing so, but if you SAY you have an open mind, then you will be challenged, as Bill's guests are, to answer the question at hand.
1-0 out of 5 stars no!
