5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for law enforcment officers and family members
Exceptionally well written; Great insight to issues w/ law enforcement.Dr. Gilmartin is a clinical psychologist that has 20yrs experience in a Sheriff's department. So he knows from whence he speaks. "Real" language quotes, so not for the exceptionally sensitive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for COPS
Yes, this is an excellent book for those who are in the field of Law Enforcement. The author explains what happens to many cops and the consequences of their jobs. The book also tells you how to "fix" the problem(s) of hypervigilance--the meaning when applied to cops is that they are "on" or "high" from working as cops and that carries over into their personal lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars For LAW ENFORCEMENT and their families
I am the wife of a police officer of over 4 years. This book is EXCELLENT. Any new or established officer will benefit greatly from this book. (whether male or female officer.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
I read this book and it took me about a week!! Why??? Because everytime I started to read it the tears just started flowing! It is unthinkable what this poor child went through. I cannot even imagine what the mother was thinking or should I say "monster" because she is by NO means a mother! I can just feel for this little girl, she was so wanting to please her monster to no avail. Right up to the end thats all she wanted to do. HOW can people do THIS??? There is barely a day when I don't think about Ursula and wish SOMEONE had done SOMETHING to stop this! To me it's ridiculous how people can just ignore it or not see it. This world just gets worse day by day. For you URSULA I say the world is cruel. I love you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cried Tears For This Baby Girl................
I just received this book in the mail today and could not stop reading it until I was done.I cried from the beginning til the end. This beautiful little girl,Ursula was beaten to death.I pictured all the abuse Ursula went through as I looked at her face on the back cover from time to time as I read.I was crying so hard for the pain that Ursula was going through my husband came into the room. The severity of the abuse Ursula suffered, no little girl should have to endure. The most heart-breaking part of the book is the comments and cries out for help to Ursula's mother in her weakened little voice. This book is definitely not for young readers. What these people did to this sweet loving little girl and no one saw the signs. No one helped her.Why didn't the teacher, neighbors, co-workers or friends see her malnourished, beaten and slumped over body? She cried out for help and no one heard her cries or they did and ignored them. That's all Ursula wanted was to be loved and taken care of by her mother. Instead every day she left Ursula with a monster and did nothing to stop him when she came home.Eventually she even joins in at the instruction of her boyfriend. When Ursula died they threw her away and erased all traces of her like she never existed.I shed more tears in the time it took me to read Ursula's story than her mother did when she died. She had every chance to help that little girl and sat idly by.I recommend this book to everyone with a child. I recommend this book to everyone without a child.Recognize the signs and get involved.Save these kinds of children from going through this pain. I will hug my kids a little more and a little tighter after having read this tragic story of a little girl named Ursula Sunshine Assaid.

5-0 out of 5 stars i will never forget.........................
I lived down the street from ursula, when i was young,i used to walk down the street every day.....after reading this book,a part of me felt guilty, thinking why i didn't pay attention to a lone little girl tied to a tree....i wonder did i ever see her outside and if so why i never saw she was in pain....i know i was only 12 but, maybe if i had noticed, maybe she would be alive today...what he did to her and the neighbor, she confided in and the teachers not noticing i'll never understand why adults just look the other way...Sorry Ursula...we should have noticed your pain and saved you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting guide through extreme Islam
Abdel Atwan's history of Al Qaeda and extreme Islamic movements is very illuminating. As opposed to many western writers on the subject, Mr. Atwan has a cultural relationship with many of the subjects he writes about. All Americans should read this book to understand the amorphous face of terrorism.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Contribution to Understanding Al Qaeda
Abdel Bari Atwan, who is the editor-in-chief of the London-based newspaper al-Quds al-Arabi, is uniquely qualified to write THE SECRET HISTORY OF al QAEDA, as he is the only Western-based journalist to have spent time with Osama Bin Laden. The extended interview took place in Tora Bora, Afghanistan in 1996, and his personal insights into Bin Laden, those around him, and the living conditions at Tora Bora make for fascinating reading. Furthermore, as a result of this meeting, Atwan and his newspaper have been privy to numerous al Qaeda communiques and insider information over the years - including the famous tidbit from Bin Laden associates that Bin Laden was alive and recovering from injuries caused by U.S. bombing near Tora Bora in late 2001. His discussion of how Al Qaeda, as an organization and it's military and economic strategy/ tactics has evolved since 9/11 makes for some eye-opening and chilling reading. Long before the controversial National Intelligence Estimate, Atwan tells us that Iraq has become a breeding ground for the most ruthless and militant Al Qaeda fighters to date. This book is AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ, and should be REQUIRED READING for all US Government and military leaders. It ranks right up there with Peter Bergen's THE OSAMA BIN LADEN I KNOW and HOLY WAR, INC. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Important Book
Everyone who cares about the earth and the fate of humanity should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on global warming and its consequences
As I was researching global warming for my novel, The Remembering, A Novel of Karma and Global Peril, I read five books on the subject.By far, Harmann's was the most thoughtful and helpful, especially his discussion of how "ancient sunlight" -- oil and other fossil fuels -- engendered the industrial revolution and an unsustainable expansion of human population since the 1880's.Especially useful was his projection of how the human race will fare when oil supplies dwindle during this century along with mass population displacements. There are certain ignore-ant politicians who would benefit from this information and its visionary suggestions on how we might correct our shortsighted errors before it's too late.

5-0 out of 5 stars A history of the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescue swimmer
SO OTHERS MAY LIVE: SAVINGS LIVES, DEFYING DEATH WITH THE COAST GUARD'S RESCUE SWIMMERS provides a history of the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescue swimmer, pairing this history with twelve stories which chronicle maritime rescues. Swimmers tell these stories of perilous rescue and while SO OTHERS MAY LIVE would also qualify to be featured in our 'True Adventure' section, it's featured here for additional value as a history of Coast Guard efforts overall.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely incredible reality-driven writing!
Her description of the harrowing rescues on rooftops in New Orleans took my breath away. I've been in SAR situations where a person had to be forced to leave a sinking boat, and on law-enforcement sorties where the bad guys had guns, but, in each of those occasions, you knew exactly what to expect - things were straightforward. The deteriorating conditions in New Orleans after Katrina, gave the crew, especially the swimmers, such extraordinary unknowns. The need to adapt to such changing and challenging situations so quickly - and the sheer number of them! -was obviously devastating to both body and psyche. And, the fact that among Coast Guard personnel there were no deaths, no collisions, no serious injury, is just astounding. I'm not sure that this country really appreciates the length to which our little service went in those days following the hurricane.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stories of rescue and heroism
This book is the story of the Coast Guard rescue swimmers, and some of the absolutely incredible situations they faced and overcame in their determination to save lives.Chapter after chapter is one cliff-hanger after another, as these swimmers selflessly risked their own lives to save those of others they had never met.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should scare anyone
This is the first book I have read by Miniter.I have followed foriegn policy and terrorism since the late 70's.I felt I knew quite a bit of what there was to know about terrorism and foriegn policy but this book should scare anyone.I think it is illustrative of some of the depths of depravity terrorists will descend to and how they drag those without the intestinal fortitude to stand up to them down with them.
1-0 out of 5 stars Damage Control for the current President
I found this book to be based on a kernel of truth wrapped in innumerable layers of unconfirmable speculation (how many people really have access to intelligence agency archives?) and one-sided 'analysis'.It is clear the Bin Ladin was 'lost' at Tora Bora when our troops were called back to garrison, allowing him to escape. This goes even farther to the right than Micheal Moore goes to the left.
4-0 out of 5 stars Open-and-shut case indictment of Clinton's lack of interest in WOT
The author, Richard Miniter, provides a fair treatment of the Clinton adminstration's lack of going after terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden and lays out his case in a 241-page book, entitled "Losing bin Laden: How Bill Clinton's Failures Unleashed Global Terror." The title is a bit of a stretch, since President Clinton alone cannot be blamed for what happened on 9/11/01. But according to his ex-advisor, Dick Morris, Mr. Clinton never wanted to lead the charge to bring bin Laden and his Islamofascist minions to justice because he was acutely aware of how the American public would perceive his use of the military, and even refusing a Sudanese offer to take bin Laden into custody because of a short-sighted belief that there was nothing to pin on the Saudi-born terrorist. Miniter disagrees with this inaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars a straightforward book that puts the reader there.
I feel this book gives a unique perspective from someone who has the skills to relay the story in a readable fashion. As a person who is living in Baton Rouge, I can tell you what he says is more straightforward than most of the stories and articles I've read and heard to date.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a thriller - if only it was.
There are several books out about Hurricane Katrina and the response, but none of them have the tremendously powerful "you are there" feeling of this book.Jed Horne writes the facts from the ground, detailing people who were there and how they survived.
5-0 out of 5 stars A local's view point!
As a long-time resident of New Orleans and one who stayed for 5 days after the storm and who has read other books about it, I'm telling you this is the best one. It's interesting, carrying the stories of several people thru the mess, and conveying an accurate picture of what happened, and how it's affecting those of us who live here still. This is a great read if you want to get a realistic view. Parts are hard to read, for exp. the chapter on Charity Hospital. But well worth the time and $. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Every Rational Being
This is a work that is at once literate, insightful, and witty. Dr. Sen discusses how the narrowness of self-definition has and does lead to violence among groups who, if they but thought more critically about it, have far more that binds them in common concern than that divides them into antagonistic camps. He also discusses how over generalizing can also dismiss the legitimate concerns especially of minorities. He does this in language that is a pleasure to read and with a mind that is at once incisive and also compassionate. The humor comes from recognition of how easily humans are led away from finding common ground by those who benefit most from keeping peoples divided.
5-0 out of 5 stars how to spread this message?
Creating awareness and spreading the message conveyed through this book, would bring us a world devoid of most of the problems we face today.

4-0 out of 5 stars A rational and a voice with clarity.
We see a lot of violence on a daily basis (all we need to do is tune in to the news.) Most of this violence is by extremist groups; groups especially associated with religions, followed closely by ethnicity. There is a lot of reconciling that needs to be done between the "official" projection of these religions by our respective (and respectful) governments as 'peaceful' and the apparent violence with which these terrorist acts are inflicted on the general public by these "religious" groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars More revelations
I just finished reading this book and it was a wakeup call for more than jsut the 911 families. After reading this and the roadblocks put in their paths to get this commission formed...then to read subsequently some fo the highlights from Bob Woodwards new book "In Denial", and the same Condaleeza Rice staffer who stonewalled and hid information about some briefings prior to 911 that he was involved in...really makes clearer the misinformation and coverup of this commission. Thank you Kristen for telling us your struggles and accomplishments in the wake of so much tragedy. Now if the rest of America will wake up and vote....and if we can ever get accountability back to answer all those 'unanswered' questions they would not even dignify with a response.
5-0 out of 5 stars Her firsthand account of what she experienced is eye-opening.
I can feel her agony and frustration with the group on Capitol Hill.I am so glad that I took the time to read this book because Kristen Breitweiser gave a voice to so many of my feeling about our current political situations

5-0 out of 5 stars Complacent Housewife. Activist Widow.
I believe Kristen Breitweiser's account of her life following 9/11 is very aptly named, "Wake-Up Call: The Political Education of a 9/11 Widow." In this straightforward and easy-to-read book, she reveals not only who she is and where she came from, but also her focused and driven reasons for maintaining a position in the public eye. It hasn't been for fame, money or glory. It has been to get to the bottom of how and why the terrorist attacks on 9/11 happened and how to prevent them from happening again. Through raw pain and unspeakable grief caused by the murder of her husband, she shares her love story and her motives. One can't help but admire her for her courage, strength, intelligence, endurance, and most importantly, her honesty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Islam Must be Watched
Sperry portrays his work, as reviewed by Beila Rabinowitz, as "an indictment of subversive Muslim leaders representing Saudi Wahhabi interests ... who are planting the seeds of insurrection"; its subtitle could be The Concerned Citizens Guide to Radical Islam in America. He explores how a network of Muslim groups and individuals are exploiting America's religious freedom and ethnic sensitivity in order to undermine America from within. According to the author, "The Muslim establishment plays an elaborate word game ... it is easy to be fooled by such duplicity, so I have provided readers with the intellectual tools to easily identify it." He argues that religiously sanctioned dissimulation (taqiya) enables Muslims to penetrate the U.S. political establishment to further an Islamist agenda. Anticipating accusations of anti-Muslim bias, he hastens to add that he "respects all Muslims as individuals."
5-0 out of 5 stars The Enemies Within
I bought Paul Sperry's book Infiltration, because I wanted to be as informed as possible, without media spin. While immensely disturbed by what I read, I was impressed by the amount of research and the credibility of this author. Paul Sperry is a well known investigative journalist, that has written for major publications across the United States.
