5-0 out of 5 stars The twisted mind of the jihadist
Mary Habek avoids polemics and sticks to pedagogy in this precise account of the nature and history of radical Islam's ideology. The title is somewhat sensational, but the text is not inflammatory. This is expository writing at its best.Habek knows just how much detail to include to explain her subject without fatiguing her readers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid Writing on a Murky Subject
Reading the Koran sheds little light on what drives Islamists. The key to understanding them lies in the Koranic interpretations of certain influential scholars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Limited
The author gives a good account of the intellectual history behind the Islamic Jihadi movement. There are 52 pages of notes giving references for further reading and research. The basic story is that by interpreting the Muslim scriptures of Qur'an and Hadith literally, Jihadists justify their war against everyone who thinks differently than they do.Important in this is the notion of naskb which can be translated as "abrogation" to justify ignoring the earlier, more tolerant sections of the Qur'an and following the later ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents & law enforcement must read this book
Terror at Beslan by John Giduck is an absolute must read by anyone who has a child in school and by anyone who is in law enforcement that may need to respond to such an incident. This book is heart wrenching and difficult to read but this must not prevent you from gaining the needed knowledge that this book provides.
5-0 out of 5 stars Schools in danger
I am in middle school so when I read this book, all I could think about was it can happen here! In any school in America, like it happened in Beslan. When I read about the kids, how the terrorists killed the older boys and raped the teenage girls, and terrorized the little ones, I can feel it along with them and imagine if it were my own school. I hope our police and soldiers are training as Mr. John Giduck tells how in this book. But I also was interested to learn how I can protect my own self, such as planning in advance, being aware, and taking martial arts. (I'm in karate.) At Beslan, fear was the way the terrorists controlled the crowd. Some kids and teachers managed to hide or escape, and others managed to survive. I just want to say God Bless the Alpha and Vympel soldiers who risked their lives and some gave their lives for the children. I know our soldiers and police will be inspired by this book. You should also check out Archangel's website and check out the training schedules and also, the cool things they have for sale, besides this book. To Mr. John Giduck, I wish I lived near your dojo, because I would love to learn the Russian Hand to Hand Combat Training, and take the Archangel anti-terrorism course for women! This book was so sad and horrible but so important to read for kids and teachers, police and parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exposes the common denominator
Although I read this macabre but critically important book more than a year ago, I have put off reviewing it that long because I just could not again face the gruesome realities it contains. But a few weeks after the July 10 death of Russia's Osama bin Laden, the Naqshabandi Sufi murderer, Shamil Basayev, there is no longer any excuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will be glad you read it, even if you disagree.
I will begin with criticisms of High Crimes & Misdemeanors. These are nagging little criticisms I make because the points I'll allude to are the sorts of things that would make me roll my eyes a little, or excuse myself for a couple of minutes for a breather if this were a conversation rather than a book.Ms. Coulter has suffered the fate of all those who seek to insert comic relief or sarcasm into serious material.Witticisms, sarcasm, barbed ironies, sage observations, facts, foregone conclusions, and research don't always blend perfectly to suit all the people all the time. Some of the (perhaps a little mean-spirited) humor at the expense of liberals, I found sophomoric and/or repetitive and/or a little snide. There, I've gone on record with that, and let me say that for me, these irritations accounted for about 12 sentences in the book.Usually they were the kickers to a "call & response", or a wrap-up rhetorical statement or question.I tried to bear in mind that I really didn't buy this book for the comedy.
1-0 out of 5 stars Throwing up has liquified her neo-con brain
Atheists have a lower divorce rate than born again christians but I guess thats just a fluke hu, Ann. They must be bad people somehow. People like Ann can't be christians because they shame one person for having an affair and then forgive another that is an alcoholic because he's a republican. She speaks to people who want to believe so bad they don't care that she doesn't have a christian bone in her body. True christians don't defame, judge or claime superiority. She doesn't have any idea of what being Jesus-like is. Oh and intelligent design is not science. Science is how Religion is why- They are too different questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.DETAILED RESEARCH, ONGOING INTELLIGENCE
This book should be REQUIRED READING.Many people I have talked to think that I am some Democrat trying to unman the Republicans when I mention a conspiracy for 9/11.If they have even an average intelligence, they should be turned around by page 150 as they read Jim Marrs account of 9/11, before and after the fact. I think they are afraid to go against the party line, especially in Texas, to submit to the evidence of such a cover up.Jim Marrs' book should straighten them out--that is if they are not afraid to read it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not completely convincing
Steele gives an excellent analysis of the current muddle about affirmative action (especially with regard to the University of Michigan ruling by the Supreme Court), and how it's arisen from the white guilt which is the title of his book.Where he fails to convince (in my view, at least) is in his attempt to extend this analysis to cover society as a whole. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
2-0 out of 5 stars The Globalization of Guilt
1. The persective of most writers is shaped by their own experience. Dr.Steele is an American Black, a baby boomer, a member of the academic elite, a liberal arts major, and a political "conservative".This certainly affects his perpective when he discusses social issues.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Competitive Model
I actually paid money to attend a lecture on this book rather than just reading the book.I find that Dr. Steele has some very valid points that have helped me to further process my own views on the race issue in America.Dr. Steele states, in his own way, that America has yet to really honestly deal with her racial past through his position on 'dissociation'.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and dishonest.
I expected to agree with this book. The idea of the media and educational establishment deliberately corrupting America is entirely plausible to me, so I was looking forward to hearing Kupelian's case.
5-0 out of 5 stars On Target
Kupelian knows of what he speaks.Straight forward and factual this book covers many facets of the snow job we are being sold in America via the courts and the media.A great guide on how to answer objections to the liberal left's agenda.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Eye Opening. . .
As a parent of five children and very concerned about their future in America I found this book to be very thorough in what is happening to our culture.I found David Kupelian did an excellent job in untangling every topic.I found myself very stressed out after reading each chapter because it is so thought provoking and actually disturbing to have the truth presented in such a way.I would highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Tender Devotional Alternative to Working Through Sexual Abuse
As I've mentioned in my previous reviews on self-help books for abuse survivors, I don't go for the current so-called Christian clap-trap ideas of healing and forgiving. Many push the idea that you should "forgive and forget," bury the memories, and be nice to your abuser by never mentioning the past, to "get along" at all costs. Some also argue that we should just hand it all over to Jesus and everything will be fine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
This is a great book for people who are trying to cope with past sexual abuse and for someone trying to understand sexual abuse victims. It is very graphic but it goes through all differant kinds of childhood abuse and all the differant emotions victims go through.I really recomend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A tough discussion about a very tough subject
I think that Dan Allender is a genius for a few reasons. One I think that he dares the reader to stretch beyond their own pain and peer deeply into the worst part of their lives. He uses this as a prescription for healing and carefully guides the readers into that chasm of life's trouble.I also think that this book encourages the reader to label some of the ugly, nasty stuff that goes along with sexual abuse. He gives women a voice to express the anger, pain and frustrations associated with abuse. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How Photography Made the Day
The 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center was not only the biggest news event in decades, it was also the most photographed one. Some people by chance got pictures of Flight 11 crashing into the north tower, and after that the cameras never stopped."Men and women by the hundreds, then thousands - bystanders with point-and-shoots, TV news teams, photojournalists by the score - felt compelled to snap history, fiery and cruel against the blue."So writes David Friend, who used to be the director of photography for _Life_ magazine, in _Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11_ (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux). You have heard plenty of 9/11 stories, but chances are you remember mostly the images.Friend makes the point that Americans who are old enough remember where they were when they _heard_ about JFK's shooting, but they remember where they were when they _saw_ the 9/11 terror attacks. The book is a lucid and fascinating recounting of how some of the most famous of the photographs came to be.It is not a coffee-table book full of photos; there are only forty or so reproduced here, but the recounting of the shots and the reflections on photography in the modern news era will make intense reading even for those who have seen the images over and over. And all of us have seen the images over and over; we cannot look away, which makes Friend's observations particularly pertinent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning, touching, excellent book
This book is a riveting read about the stories behind the photos of 9-11. It presents information within a context that explores both the personal point of view of the photographer, as well as different points of view when relevant.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Craft of a day's shooting pictures
This is a prefect craft of the power of photographs and everything that comes into play around shooting a cataclysmic disaster such as 9/11. The author has navigated the wherabouts of several people and what drove them to shoot that day and the affects of certain photos on our lives. The NOTES section at the end, the bibliography, is the best and most detailed that I've ever seen. Photos in the middle of the book are well used and described throughout the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte. We were the first class to use this book. Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail.I continue to use the book as a resource.I am currently a hospital CEO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great balance of theory and practice
I used this text for a class in health care management. I was impressed by the readability of the text, the incredible amount of information it contained, and the great balance of theory with practical approaches. Many books about management are a bit short in the area of practical tools. This one gives you tools to work with. I used the outline of this book to do a strategic analysis of an organization with which I work. The only significant weakness of the book is the uneven quality of the case studies. These were contributed by outside authors. Some of these are terrific, others are not well written and not so helpful. Hope this gets corrected in the new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Novice Planner
This comprehensive and yet easily understood text provides thefundamentals of strategic management as it applies to most any health careorganization. The authors' experience comes to life in a variety of realexamples and cases throughout the text. My background and interest instrategic planning led me to thoroughly examine the step-by-step processes, and I was amazed at both the simplicity and applicability of each. Definetly a text that I will recommend to anyone entering the healthcareindustry or strategic planning arenas. Not only was I benefited by thepurchase of this text, but had the opportunity to meet these outstandingauthors in person during graduate study/research. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Relax, Jerry.
While many, perhaps most, will disagree with Professor Yoo's conclusions his reasoning and analysis are thorough and detailed. Most of the negativity expressed the other reviews seemingly stems from ignorance. There is a large body of scholorship devoted to the historical foundations of 'the executive power' as vested in a 'President of the United States' per the Constitution.People may not be aware of the broadness of this power and its historical uses.Professor Yoo not only argues that these powers exist but that he is a champion of preserving them. One may disagree with the use, expanison or preservation of such powers but it is flying in the face of 230 years of precedant to claim no such powers exist.

1-0 out of 5 stars CRIMINAL
Mr Yoo moves on from his earlier arguments that torture falls at a point slightly short of physical death, organ failure or loss of limb. Mr Yoo makes some interesting if devastating points with his new theories. The President's war powers, he argues, allow him to do, basically, whatever he wants. The President may, if he chooses, crush the genitals of children, maim, torture or kill civilians. In this respect one might remember that Bush ordered an air strike on the house occupied by the infant grandchildren of Saddam Hussein AFTER the end of the Iraq war and even though the house was surrounded by US troops. The President is limited, according to Mr Yoo, only by how he CHOOSES to interpret International Treaties and as he has the power to repudiate such treaties or ignore them entirely (as in the International Human Rights for the Child Treaty, the Geneva Convention or the Treaty of Vienna,) then, this means that presidential power is absolute EVEN if despotic criminal or tyrannical. Mr Yoo appears now to say that the President and his henchmen, cronies and agencies MAY indeed use indiscriminant torture. Mr Yoo however does not adequately explain how the President can thus overturn congressional treaty ratification. As what constitutes a 'time of war' is also up to the President and does not rely on any 'legal' declaration of war (which is a matter of international law to which the US is thus not subject,) then the US may have, effectively, a Despot Emperor for President. Does the War on Drugs thus give the President the same powers as he asserts for his "War on Terror" - an undeclared war on no particular nation state? This is interesting, not just semantically, as the Supreme Court appears to agree with Mr Yoo's interpretation, blocking cases dealing with this on grounds of secrecy and national security AND Congress does not appear to care. Perhaps Clinton should have used Mr Yoo's arguments in the Monical Lewinsky scandal and impeachment hearings. War powers might have thus allowed him to do whatever sexual harrassment he wanted with his cigar and to lie about it in the national interest. The problem with Mr Yoo's argument is that Checks and Balances thus no longer exist. Interestingly if one applies Mr Yoo's arguments to their logical end he becomes an eloquent advocate for terrorism or for the Holocaust where the ends justify the use of any means however horrible.Of course, either this is pretty much nonsense and makes toilet paper of the Declaration of Independence, Magna Carta, democracy and human rights OR the truth is more terrifying and the US is now a Stalinist state. I suspect Mr Yoo could be subject to arrest as a war criminal should he ever leave the United States and visit a civilised country???

1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Incompetant
Did you know that in his last book, John Yoo stated that the power of the President in time of war was essentially that of a king?

Smedley got it right.I'd also add that there are many wars that serve as rackets, including the War on Drugs and the War on Immigrants, both of which provide all sorts of business for our growing prison industrial complex.
3-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Little Book That Gets a Lot Wrong
Smedley Butler wrote this book after a sudden conversion to pacifism. Unfortunately the rightousness of his conversion comes through with a number of mistatements and twists (or perhaps ignorance given Butler's lack of higher eductaion in national security affairs). Like the "Merchants of Death" hearings by Republican Congressmen in the same time period, a position is staked out, ie. "War is Bad and is Caused by War Profiteers" and seeks to prove it.
