Too expensive.
I have used this text for several years for graduate students in education.Eisner is a very thoughtful writer and students often find him inspiring, although there are always those who find him long-winded.However, this summer when I saw the price I decided this would be the last time I'd use it.$79. incl tax!That's ridiculous.At this rate, the college textbook market will surely become obsolete.It's a shame. ... Invaluable for helping kids read
I tutor first graders and have found this book an invaluable resource.It's a great source for ideas for making learning fun and a positive experience.It's helped me get away from the deadly drills and the frustration that goes along with it, and offers me new inspiration. Recommended for anyone trying to teach a young child to read.

Not just for learning difficulties
I wish I had this book when my children were learning to read.There are a wide variety of fun games to help children learn to read, whether they have a learning difficulty or not.I've given a copy to my daughter's 2nd grade teacher to use in her classroom.I keep my copy in the car for long drives to play word games.It is a terrific, fun to use book. ... Hardly a How-To!!
If this is the "best book out there on Charlotte Mason" and has "the most practical application" of her ideas, as other reviewers have stated, then I'd have to say that Charlotte Mason is confusing, because this is a badly written book.I picked this up wanting to learn about Charlotte Mason's philosophy of education and what it looks like in the home school.I returned the book with a bad taste in my mouth.The author is VERY flighty, throwing out random ideas that are not well-explained or thorough.Many of the chapters, including those entitled "Composition" "grammar," and "spelling," are only two pages long!She randomly describes Mason's ideas for a scant paragraph, and then throws together some "How-To"'s that are bewildering.After reading this book I can say that not only do I not understand Charlotte Mason, but I have little desire to because of this author's bad work.This is NOT a book for those who aren't already Mason fans, nor for those who need detailed help in applying her philosophy.

The BEST Charlotte Mason book out there
I've read every book on Charlotte Mason that I could find and this is the best (A More Charlotte Mason Education is excellent also).This book is extremely well organized, concisely written and very easy to understand.I appreciate that it gets right to the point since I don't have a lot of time to meander around looking for the answers.After reading this book I felt completely prepared to begin our homeschool experience.The other books I'd read only made me think that I needed to read more because I didn't 'have the answers yet.'The organization of this book makes it easy to quickly look up any subject you have a question on and find the answer immediately.What a blessing!
Learning Together
As I read this book in one sitting, I realized that it was the perfect tool for me. It is a great overview of what Charlotte Mason believed and applied in her schools. It immediately helped me utilize the CM approach and was well put, informative and applicable. Great book for reference and quick brush-up
I bought this book so I would not have to shuffle through the pages of my cell/molucular bio textbook. Although this book was great with having the main concepts, there wasn't much detail. But that is the purpose of the book- to have the main molecular biology topics in a clear and organized manner. For more detail and test questions get the full outline book from the same series. I recommend this book highly!
This book is indispensable to those in the education field or working with children in any setting.I first went to a conference on Reggio Emilia educational practices back in 1995.Baji Rankin was the presenter.She was very credible.I learned a tremendous amount from her.After going to this conference, I was so inspired, I attended two more.I was astounded by what they were doing in Reggio Emilia, Italy.Dumbfounded really... It opened my whole world to the possibilities of what children are capable of in an environment that is collaborative, constructivist, and supports the fact that children are strong, resourceful and powerful beings.I worked in a preschool setting and then subsequently, in an after-school program.I was inspired by this approach and used aspects of this approach in these settings.This book has been invaluable.I know it backward and forwards.I recommend it highly!I recommend it to counselors who are play therapists too.That is how I implement this approach now- in a play therapy context as a clinical counselor.To aide in implementation of this approach I also recommend the book "Education on the Edge of Possibility" by Renate Nummela Caine and Geoffrey Caine.It discusses brain-based learning and how to incorporate a wholistic approach in a classroom setting.I hope we see more of brain-based learning and approaches like those seen in Reggio Emilia, Italy in the United States.These approaches are simply a different way of looking at the child.It is not a technique.It is not a fad for teachers to endure until the next new popular approach hits the school system.It is a completely different way of viewing the student.It is a process of emergence; it is a way of viewing the whole child; it is a way of catching the child's engagement level and curiosity and capitalizing on that; and most of all it is deeply respectful of the child and the child's processes.This approach creates safe places and environments for children to learn and grow.The children in my preschool program and after-school program thrived!Thank you for the exposure to this material!It has changed my life and my own way of being in the world.I feel very blessed to have come across this material.It changed my career path.

Okay as a supplement to other articles and books.
This book basically describes different contributors' experiences with attempting the Reggio Emilia approach.I had the idea that the book was going to tell me how to take the "First Steps Toward Teaching theReggio Way," however, it was more of a diary about other people'sexperiences.More like reflections than advice. There were some chaptersat the beginning describing the approach, but nothing that any commonjournal article wouldn't cover.I would consider this book useful forsomeone who is quitefamiliar with the approach and is looking foradditional reading, but not for someone who is looking to begin toimplement the strategies and is looking for a resource guide. ... A great resource
Dr. Shea has created a great resource to help a teacher ascertain what difficulties a student may have when reading. The forms are reproducible which are not only wonderful, but time saving as well.

When running records lose their punch with advanced readers
In my job as being a Literacy Coordinator for my school, I have often heard from teachers who say, "Running records don't tell me what I need to know about my more advanced readers."I've also heard, "Running record results make my student look like he is reading at a high level, but it doesn't tell me much about his comprehension, and I know he isn't comprehending what he is reading at this high level." I can personally say say that owning a copy of this book is the next best thing to having her in your classroom. I felt like she was talking to me as she would have in the classroom. I feel fortunate that I learned the process of Taking Running Records. What I was able to do for all if my students to improve their reading skills was beyond my belief. Why is Darwinism immune from Debate?
I watched the theory of gravity being debated by string theorists on TV last week.If gravity can still be debated why not Darwin's version of evolution?The National Academy's book ignores the real reasons Christians find it difficult to accept Darwin.Why is mere random chance and un-intelligent design a more likely explanation for DNA, the human brain, the eye, and complex mirco-organisms than intelligent design?Everything cited in the National Academy's book could just as likely support intelligent design as unintelligent design.If your worldview is that man is nothing more than an evolved monkey, has no special purpose, and was not created by God or in the image of God, than Darwin's evolution story is your onlyexplanation for the origin of life and evolution. Unfortunately, as we clearly see today, under this worldview right and wrong, truth and lie, become relative terms and are whatever you want them to be.However, if your worldview is that people are special, that maybe man has a purpose that is unfolding before him, that there are somethings that are absolutely true or absolutely wrong, and that we each have a soul then intelligent design opens the door to another way of looking at science and the world.I feel I'm a mainstream Christian, and no Christians I know deny that animals evolve. Clearly animals do change over time.We simply see purpose in the world.Why can't it be true that animals evolve for a reason, not because of a random roll of the dice.Why does the creation of the universe have to be a fluke and not the result of design?That however is not allowed to be debated today.For thousands of years scientists studied the world to reveal the true nature of God.Only recently has the definition of science changed to exclude any meaningful or caring God. As for me, I look at the world (and the fossil record) and I see purpose, meaning, and intelligence. God is not my philosophy, God is my reality.

Based on the consistent use of the scientific method
I have a BS in Earth Sciences, with a minor in biology, chemistry, and physics.I'm an Earth Sciences teacher and have been teaching for several years.This is a good outline that can be useful for science teachers and public school administrators who find themselves (sigh) having to refute the attempts of religious right to teach religion in a science class.
