Everything you need all in one place
I purchased this book to help me prepare for my first year, and I love it.I find that while the famous "First Days of School" is motivating and inspirational, "Survival Kit" is more practically useful.It has lists for many occasions which I find easy to use and very helpful.Ideas and topics I might never think of and those I've thought of and forgotten are both here, and it's great to have them together at my fingertips in one reference.I believe this is an essential resource for a new teacher at any grade level.

One of My Favorites
I am a third year teacher.When I was a student teacher I found this book, and it helped me tremendously!When I was awarded my first teaching career I unfortunately lost the book in all the moving that I had to do so I bought it again and reviewed some things in the book.Then I moved back to my home city. Unfortunately, I lived in an area that was devasted by Hurricane Katrina, and I lost the book again so now I am buying it a third time.
Super book -- very helpful!
I found this book way more helpful than Harry Wong's The First Days of School.The First-Year Teacher's Survival Kit has tons of useful information and lots of great checklists -- like the one that lists things to do 1 month before school starts; 2 weeks before; 1 week, etc.As a career changer who does not have an education degree, I thought the information in this book was clear, direct, and just what I was looking for. ... Calling all educators: A MUST HAVE!
OK, the fact that he is "the" professor who changed the course of my life notwithstanding: This is a terrific book, one that opens doors for teachers who want to think about "what" they do, "how" they do it, "why" they use the materials that they do, and, ultimately, what critical pathways they have opened in their students at the end of the day. Buy this Book!
I love this book.Every teacher should have one.College education teacher aught to use it for their student teachers, too.The reading is easy and the tips are quick and to the point.This is a very user friendly book.Buy it!

Pretty Good!
This is a great book for beginning teachers with little to no experience in the classroom.It gives you many ideas to push you in the right direction.
ONE OF MY FAVORITES
One-Minute Discipline is one of my all-time favorite books on teaching, and I've read a lot of books about teaching!It is about so much more than discipline.The section on "teaching philosophy" is profound.There are fantastic support ideas, lists, tips, techniques, forms, surveys and quotes on discipline, motivation (both student and teacher)and teaching.

Just A Little Pricey...But Excellent
Mayesky balances theory, standards, and practicality in her book by organizing it like a house.She builds up the discipline from the ground (what is creative arts in early childhood) to the unique, but unnecessary, touches (applying early childhood creative arts for holidays).

excellent
This is an excellent book. My husband and I read many passages for my son. He likes them very much. They enrich his mind tremendously. My son's school somehow does not provide this much content. We would miss a lot fine literature, history, and geography without this book. Thanks to the authors. I do see the math part is too easy for second graders nowadays. For practice, we use Beestar math and ELA (a wonderful web site www.beestar.org). Its free weekly exercises are about right and very helpful. Overall, this is an outstanding book loaded with fine content. I highly recommend it.

Great series!
This series is great if you homeschool or want to help your child during the summer. If you want to use it for homeschool, Hirsch has made a teacher handbook. The Teacher Handbooks provide background about language arts, history and geography, visual arts, music, mathematics, and science. Each handbook has been written to look like the Core Knowledge Sequence. For each section in the Sequence, there is a matching section in the handbooks.

A little old, but still quite true
The Doll text is starting to get a bit out of date, as it talks about how we will start to use computers and databases to track information, but that's what you should expect when you see the copyright date.The rest of the book is right on the money though.It defines curriculum and describes the problem we face today as educators, as well as what we must do to improve things.Although the author held many positions in the field of education, it is most definitely written from the perspective of a teacher who is willing, ready, and able to do what is right.

Curriculum Improvement Review
This book was very informative and full of examples.I especially liked the participation section that discusses the role of the environment in planning curriculum.

Student's critique
This is a well organized book with detailed directions. This textbook serves as an excellent guide in designing thematic units. It offers step-by-step and well organized directions to the development of the unit and contains simple language that makes it easier for the reader to follow and understand. It also includes multiple sample lesson plans that are helpful in preparing a thematic unit. Curriculum Review from Hawaii
Mr. Posner's writing style infused both a sense of the practical, with enough theoretical background to create a readable textbook.As I traversed through the chapters, I slowly began to ccomprehend the true complexity of writing and interpreting curriculum.And, once I completed his book, I felt as though I had learned an entirely new way of viewing curriculum, not as a static document, but rather, as an active voice, and constantly evolving essential component of the professional educator's toolbox.
Best Primer on Curriculum Available
After you get over sticker shock on the price of this book, buy it if you are in need of a basic understanding of how curriculum has been organized and developed in American education. No other publication is comparable to it for its succinct overview of the curriculum process and those who have most profoundly shaped it. However, it does not provide in-depth commentary on the movers and shakers in this field. Likewise, those seeking a detailed history of curriculum development are advised to look elsewhere. I used this book in a curriculum course I taught and students found it quite accessible.

A good start to understanding curriculum changes, and fights
Posner's field is curriculum development, and he has written extensively about how teachers, administrators, supervisors, and ultimately the public thinks about curriculum and curriculum reform.In this book, Analyzing theCurriculum, he presents tools to understand the conflicts within educationand education reform, by underlining the implicit assumptions in all formsof curriculum reform.These assumptions include (1) how learners learn,(2) how teachers teach, (3) the locus of reform (university-based,collegially based in the school); (4) the political contexts of reform.Heprovides several detailed examples of curriculum analysis, ranging fromJerome Bruner's Man: A Course of Study and Jerrold Zacharias' PhysicalScience Study Committee (both university-based reform curricula) to the"whole language" movement.In each case he is fair to the meritsand demerits of the curriculum in question.Read more

Unsatisfied
We purchased this and the second grade edition this year.This is my first and last experience with these books and the author.The only part of the books I found helpful was the math sections.I feel the history was a bit over their heads and the study of Greek mythology for a second grader was rediculous.In the fourth grade edition I was very dipleased to see evolution as a main source of study.We are homeschoolers and I teach not only from the three R's but from the very Word of God.No matter what your religious faith or lack thereof, I feel that placing an emphasis on one view being taught in in a broad spectrum is ludicrous.I did not know the author's stand point before purchasing the books and will not line his wallet with my money again.

Helpful Tool
We bought this to use with our daughter who just started fourth grade.We used the third grade version this summer and were pleased enough with it to give this one a try.As with the other, the history portions were well written and easy for her to understand.The choices for poetry and literature are just unusual enough for her to be interested in.If I were homeschooling, I wouldn't rely on this alone, but it does make a very helpful and handy tool for suplimenting a public school education. ... Think Big
The authors of this long-running text are way out front in focusing on the Internet as curriculum's future. The entire first The 6th Edition Tries Hard, but Falls Flat
This book looks promising, but the authors seem to be writing about recent-past trends in curriculum as if they were the waves of the future.They seem to have a strong bias for unstructured classrooms and postmodernism, even though those ideas appear to have reached their peaks and begun to decline in the real world.They talk at several points on the uselessness of standardized testing, but the consensus these days is it is an abdication of responsibility to omit verification of results in the classroom. A Nicely Updated Resource for New Instructional Designers
This time-tested resource has been updated to include reference to current paradigmatic trends and issues in the field of instructional design, and current "Expert Edge" inserts offer new instructional designers the experience of small cases of interest in practice today. The authors are recognized in the field of educational technology, and there are many inserts from the leaders in field and design practice in the text to provide instructors and learners with contextual examples of design issues. This is a great entry-level jump into instructional design. THe book is well planned and chapters are very informative. I used this text for an intro to instructional design course and found it to be a good resource. One drawback is the oversimplicity of some of the examples that are presented in this text. Read more

Concise and Useful Approached to Teaching
How Students Learn: History, Mathematics, and Science in the Classroom by M. Suzanne Donovan, John D. Bransford (National Academies Press) This book has its roots in the report of the Committee on Developments in the Science of Learning, How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience and School (National Research Council, 1999, National Academy Press). That report presented an illuminating review of research in a variety of fields that has advanced understanding of human learning. The report also made an important attempt to draw from that body of knowledge implications for teaching. A follow-on study by a second committee explored what research and development would need to be done, and how it would need to be communicated, to be especially useful to teachers, principals, superinten�dents, and policy makers: How People Learn: Bridging Research and Prac�tice (National Research Council, 1999). These two individual reports were combined to produce an expanded edition of How People Learn (National Research Council, 2000). We refer to this volume as HPL.
