A Must Have!
As a staff developer and as a teacher of multiple grade levels this book rocks!If you ever have a chance to see Rich Allen in person, you will be hooked for sure.He has some really simple (which we teachers always appreciate) yet POWERFUL ideas that you can begin using immediately, and they will positivelyimpact your students. Not Impressed...
This book is not a helpful resource for a new teacher.Most new teachers are looking for resources constructed as teaching tools; easily ready for application in the classroom. This book is not one of them.

Middle school has become a play ground for social radicals
Other books have reviewed the decline of education in American with a broad general view.Cheri Pierson Yecke focuses on the middle school movement over the last 30 plus years, and how many facets of the middle school movement have hurt specifically the talented and gifted children, but also children in general.She does a great job in reviewing various pieces of the middle school change.She has hundreds of footnotes; many of them are as interesting as the main text of the book. Those critics of Yecke's book who claim that she makes "bizarre" and "unsubstantiated claims" cause me to wonder if they have even bothered to read the text at all.Not only is this one of the most meticulously researched, annotated, and footnoted books I have ever encountered in my nineteen years in the field of education, but it is also one of the most timely in that it deals with pertinent issues, the results of which we can witness in our own society and the fruits of which we will be forced to reckon with as graduates of our dumbed-down educational system begin to take over jobs and leadership positions in our society. Yecke's book unfortunately encapsulates the worst of how governement tries to rule the roost in Education. For years in MN we had one of the best school systems as far as states go,and now, with No Child Left Behind,we are mysteriously falling short. Yecke's main problem is that teachers and schools are not allowing the best and brightest students excel in the regular ed classroom. Welcome to public education Ms. Yecke! I am sure every school would allow for more gifted and talented classes,if only there were the money to support them.The public and many teacher's main problem with Yecke is that she is attempting to turn the clock back on public education by about thirty years.By saying that students should be focusing on learning facts instead of analytical skills,she is basically flying in the face of what students need to excel in today's world. Any computer can spit out dates and numbers,but most can't think analytically.The only mediocrity in schools that Yecke is so frustrated with is the fact that in a public school,you are required to education EVERYONE,and not just the gifted and talented. The diaspora to the urban schools has resulted and probably won't cease. Yecke's book is really the voice of a frustrated few,who view middle schools as a breeding ground for below average performers.In my own education experience,if you engage only the gifted few,then the vast majority are not being educated.Apparently,Yecke is okay with that. ... What a wonderful program!
We have decided to homeschool our son.We are not fanatics, this is just the best option for our family.That being said, I really wanted my son to have a structured preschool experience.I am so glad that I found this curriculum!I am so impressed!What wonderful ideas Ms. Shaw has put in it!The layout and daily plan has really been thought through.There is just the right amount of content and time spent on each subject for the short attention span of children this age.Each day, there is Bible, a themed topic from God's World (My Birthday, Birds, Communication, Insects, Food, Five Senses, etc) - this topic is continued all week, Language Skills, Physical Education, Math, Art or Music (alternate days), Health, Safety & Manners or Character Building (alternate days), a Memory Verse and snackThis truly is a wonderful program for children of the 3-5 age range.A complete listing of topics covered can be found on the Bright Beginnings website.http://www.bright-beginnings.net There is a yahoo group for users of this curriculumhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/Bright_Beginnings/ Take good care and enjoy!

Great textbook
I have been hunting for an inexpensive guidebook to use with my methods and materials in special education class.I have students teaching everything from pre-k through 22 year olds covering every topic from life skills, to traditional academics, to art.This means that a traditional textbook doesn't do me much good.However the others I looked at were too general to help.Then I found Accessing.Just reading made me exclaim in agreement.I like the format, the content and language used.So far my students have given it a thumbs up too- both for price, size and content. ... The Story just keeps getting better
My children (ages 6 and 14) studied through volumes 1 and 2 last year for our homeschool social studies curriculum.Volume 3 is everything we hoped for to extend our knowledge!The activity guides have proven to be a vital resource to cut some preparation time for lessons. This is an excellent introductory source for the beginning returning or experienced preschool teacher. Skills for Pre School Teachers is clear and consice written in laymans terms. It offers many resources for activites and offers titles of material for further research. This text is user friendly filled with hands on assignments and check listsd that can be adapted to almost any classroom setting. A decent intro to Mathmatica
This is typical of the Schaum's outline series: a decent, no-frills introduction to Mathematica at a reasonable price. When you look at the other books on the subject, they cost 8 to 10 times as much. Get this one, work hard and save some long bucks. The others may be pretty but are they really worth it?

Perfect introduction to Mathematica.
This is an excellent introductory book on Mathematica. If you need to learn some basic features of this language, it is the best tool.
A good introduction to Mathematica
If you're never used Mathematica before, this book is a good starting point. The Mathematica book (which is the same as the electronic help files from Mathematica) is certainly a better reference as far as depth and content is concerned. Therefore, if you're looking for a reference that will give you information on the tools from the software, you're better off with the help files. If you want to learn how to use the software itself and make some sense out of the otherwise akward user interface, then this book is definitely for you. ... Read more

Provocative
The highlight of this book is chapter 9 as he discusses ontology, i.e., the nature of what truly exists. He talks about the present as always changing into the past and the future. In other words, the present isn't really present. To illustrate how change occurs he mentions a piece of meat as it is cooking. If left unattended, when will the meat cease to be meat?

The university that accepted me into its six-year medicine program required that I read this (and other) book(s) during the summer before entering their program.
Extremely Timely Teaching
Although most of these essay were written over eight decades ago, I found them to be extremely timely, especially the title essay.Whitehead shoots straight.He begins by stating that most teachers transmit "inert" ideas in their practice--they teach material that has to practicable bearing on providing any meaningful help to students.Read more

preschool teacher's review
I was disappointed with this book, if I had flipped through it before buying I don't think I would have bought it.I was expecting step by step instructions for activities but rather it seems very general.I think a lot of the ideas seem obvious.The GOOD thing is that it is grouped and organized for you.I admit that I need to spend some more time with the book and give it another chance, maybe I'll change my mind.But the two books that I can't live without, in my preschool class (3 year olds), are R IS FOR RAINBOW (Anselmo Rollins and Schuckman) and YEAR ROUND ACTIVITIES FOR THREE YEAR OLD CHILDREN (Anthony Coletta and Kathleen Coletta).
A Life Saver
I am a lead teacher in a daycare and had to come up with activities for many different themes. I love this book because it is divided into gross motor. art, blocks, dramatic play and so much more. This was my daycare bible. Other teachers were so impressed with "my" ideas. I took the credit but in my mind I was saying Thank you Resource Book! This is worth every penny.
