Not Much Detail About Honda
While Joe Pettitt has a deep understanding of automobile tuning and performance, it appears as though he has no actual first hand wrench time on a Honda.He mentions different types of fuel injection but not which type Hondas are typically equipped with.This is a common theme throughout the book. not a book I would recommend
I would not recommend this book and here's why: 1.The book does not go into enough detail for a beginner to understand the parts being described or how they operate.2.For an experienced mechanic,they will understand what is being described but will already know the information being given. excellent book...

NASCAR's Wild Years: Stock Car Technology in the 1960's

GREAT BOOK FOR VINTAGE NASCAR MODEL BUILDERS
This book is a MUST! Why? Because besides giving you TONS of GREAT COLOR & B&W shots of the rise and development of NASCAR from the end of the 1950s, to the early 1970s, with full-detail shots of motors, frames, all the "star" drivers, and legendary "tuners" over the years, along with absorbing data to read, the book also includes shots, by year, of some of the well-known Super Stock drag cars, and... good shots of just assembly line passenger cars, by year, so model builders who like to do "factory stock" replica models, will have good reference material. So much of accurate scale model building is reliant on GOOD REFERENCE books/photos, & this book should well be in any SERIOUS Vintage Nascar builder's collection. Extremely HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. How to tune a Holley.
This book includes information on how to select a carb, how each metering system works, mileage, street, race, off-road, marine and forced induction modifications and copious part numbers. The correct process is described to fix any problem, but most final numbers(70 or 72 main jet? 35 or 37 pump squirter? Etc) are determined by road or strip testing. Also includes exploded diagrams and a 54 picture teardown and reassembly of the 4150/4160.
Holley Carbs
While this book is very good and should be in every Holley tuners library, I would like to see more theory or perhaps something such as "if you make the idle air bleeds smaller then the power curve ...."Would be nice

No help here for a rebuild.
Look elsewere for a guide to help you rebuild. I guess this book would be useful if you are a racer or something, but not for the DIY engine tinker-er. ... Read more

Great! just that!!
If you are interested in pinstripping, go get this book!!! I'm just starting in the field, but this book contains excelent information, nice step by step tutorials, and great pictures.Maybe it doesn't have too much patterns, but who cares? if you understand the technics, you have to start pushing yourself in making some designs on your own.

Monster Garage:How To Custom Paint damn near anything
Found this book to be helpful in the way it gave a brief but easy-to-read outline of the processes involved in all the main areas of custom painting. Being a flame enthusiast myself, I found it benificial as it showed the main skills required to carry out the job and the tools and equipment needed.

Its a good one but....
This book covers all the steps you need to know but the thing i didnt liked is that it have a few chapters from other books. So if you have "cheap tricks & special F/X of craig Fraiser" you will not be happy to see a part of this book (37 pages). and from onother book i have - one about pinstripping (also Craig Fraiser's) (33 pages). So if you dont have these books i will recommend to add this one to your collection. ... Read more

A great palce to start
Jim Richardson is now seen on the weekly syndicated TV series "Classic Car Garage" where he dispenses similar tips on restoring a classic car. Unlike some other authors, Jim approaches each segment withthe genuine enthusiasm, experience, and credibility that only he can offer.Upon reading this book, you'll come away with useful knowledge, valuabletips learned from experience, and the feeling that you've known Jim foryears as a trusted friend. Thorough and Comprehensive Technical Book
I will start right with the major fault I take issue with.The supercharging info is not as well covered as turbocharging topics.There is more discussion, for instance, on turbocharger camshaft characteristics than on supercharger cams.The exhaust lobe design of a supercharger camshaft is not even touched on at all.
Excellent book
I highly recomend you read this book as a place to start to help you decide the path you want to take as well as tuning.
Too broad
I expected a book on supercharging in particular. Instead I have a book on engine tuning which is a complete redundancy in my opinion. Some of the items covered- fuel, intake ignition just to name a few. Barely covered are all the forced inducing systems. Its too broad. Barely covers any supercharger although has good graphs and formulaes for blowers and intercoolers.

The best book on building a project hot rod/project car.
One of the things I needed in a book was to know what order(sequence)do you build your rod/custom in.Thats when I discovered this book.This book tells you what you need to know about planning your project,determine what you are going to use the car for(eg:show car/weekender/daily driven),car selection,component selection,purchase of vehicle,build up tips,when to install each item,electrical wiring,painting and so much more.This book sets it out with comprehensive advice from start to finish,even before you think about buying a car.There is a section on how to perform a top chop thats photographed in black & white photos with plenty of information.This book will help you decide what you want first then how to build it and save money too.

This book does not show hot to build a hot rod, just differnt types. no real techincal data.pass on this one!

Really great book
I'm a complete novice to the world of hot rodding, and my actualinterest is building electric cars. What makes this book so great in my opinion is that the author starts at the beginning and challenges you to pin down what you really want to build and challenges you to plan it out a little better. This book just tells you that you should leave it up to someone else to do the work for you they tell you to buy kits but not were to buy kits.Not even worth the money i wouldnt bother with this book all the cars in it are classics anyways.

Great book, but some information incorrect
I found this to be an excellent book describing in detail much of the items one needs to know about the LS6.However, the parts listed contain incorrect information about part numbers and descriptions, so if one creates a design using the information in the book they will be wasting time and money.As long as the part numbers aren't trusted, this book is terrific.

EXCELLENT TECH INFO!
I have a lot of books on this subject but Eddie Paul's has the most information by far. I really like his stories about the movie car business too.There are so many tips on techniques and tools that i refer to it repeatedly.

A good guide to rebuilding Datsun/Nissan engines.
If you own any Datsun/Nissan with any L-series engine and you need to know if it needs a rebuild then this book will tell you what you need to know.Find out what's wrong first before you decide what to do.This book is a great guide to these engines.For those who like working on cars this book will help you along the way.Good value.

Great But Limited to Older Engines
This excellent book does NOT cover all Nissan overhead cam engines, only the now-ancient L types.Since the title addresses overhead cam engines and the current edition is 1998, I had hoped my 1989 GA16i overhead camengine would be covered.It isn't.So, if you have a newer Nissan engine,buy this book anyway for the great advice and techniques but also get aseparate shop manual for your engine. And I hope the author will updatethis book soon to cover the newer engines.

Excellent Photos and Info, required for any L-series owner
This book was of great assistance to me during the rebuild of my Datsun 240Z.The information was instrumental and helpful all along the way.Compared to the Haynes and Chilton manuals, this book presented picturesand words which matched and cohered to what I was doing on the motor at thetime.Also the amount of illustrations and clarity were excellent, as apicture is worth a thousand words.Aside from the Nissan shop manual whichyou can't get your hands on I feel this is the best publication to have atyour side during any Nissan rebuild.Read more

An aging starter book, but little more...
First, this book is a bit out of date...10 years old now.The author talks of many "current" technologies, but explanations and comparisons of the products are limited at best.There is a lot of emphasis on converting carburated engines to fuel injection, but only specific examples are given when it comes right down to it, leaving many people and possibilities out in the cold. Are you lucky enough to have a system reviewed in this book?
For the "Do-It-Yourself" custom engine builder, this book is of little use.Unless you own a car with one of the EFI systems discussed within it's pages, you are out of luck.There is no talk of tuned plenum/runner design, scratch-built custom applications, or carb conversions.Even the mention of forced induction is merely in passing as another option to explore, but is not expounded upon.In short, if you've got a 5.0 Ford or a Chevy TPI this book is for you.Other folks should keep on walking.

The synopsis given above doesn't lie. There's a lot of reference to carburetion for comparison, and often the tone of the book is toward converting a carbureted engine into a fuel-injected one, but the subjectcoverage is comprehensive. Not useful after ~1980
Even with a publishing date of 1999, most of the information is about pre-1980 Ford Engines. For anyone working on 1986 to 1995 Ford 302's there is little information. Many of the Spac. tables end prior to 1975. For me rebuilding a 1995 5.0L to a 1986 Mustang GT, not much help.

Interesting Reading
I bought this book for information on 429 and 460 engines (it includes 460 in big letters on the cover). The information on 429/460s especially the heads is weak, tables are partially complete and the casing numbers areinconsistant and sometimes just wrong. It would be foolish to buy partsbased solely on this reference. There no material for 429/460 engines after1975. For the price it is a good value, I just wish it was more accurateand complete.

Leaves a bit to be desired.
This book is a wonderful source if you're looking for STOCK interchange info on FE or small-block motors.However, if you happen to be a fan of or areseeking information on the 429/460 (385 series) motors, I think you'llbe disappointed.While almost entire chapters are dedicated to the FEmotor family, more often than not the last 1 1/2 pages refer to the429/460's.Sure, that wierd one-off NASCAR 427 motor is neat to look at,but you're highly unlikely to see one at the local swap meet.And even ifyou do, you probably don't want to buy it anyway, due to lack ofaftermarket support.This book reads like an art museum guide, extollingthe virtues (or lack) of obscure parts that we'll probably never see.
