4-0 out of 5 stars Social memory
Roach's use of Paul Connerton's "incorporating practice of memory" (from "How Societies Remember": buy this!) allows him to develop a theory of the genealogy of performance-which seems to me to be a sort of re-construction or re-tracing of origins. This approach allows him to do some extremely interesting analysis of legal ramifications of race, racial categories (the octaroon, for example), public performance of capitalism in the form of the slave markets, and "body ownership."It also reifies race and racial designations and works in many ways against his arguments. For instance, the multiple ethnicities of Native Americans merge together into one self-contained "Other" within the imagination of both African and Anglo Americans. How Africans appropriated these images in their performances of race seem more complex in reality than Roach makes them out to be-related to the idea of "first," land distribution, and the fact that the issue of legal ownership and status was ambivalent at best ("The slave-holding propensities of the Five Civilized Tribes (so-called by whites in part because they held slaves) emphasize the double, inverted nature of the Indian as a symbol for African Americans:the non-white sign of both power and disinheritance" p. 205).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The origins and meanings of the symbols of Thanksgiving
Edna Barth cites Benjamin Franklin's wish that the Turkey had been selected as the representation of the United States since it was a much more respectable bird than the Bald Eagle, as well as a true original native of North America.Instead, the turkey is a symbol of one of the most American of holidays, Thanksgiving. For young readers who always think of the little band of Pilgrims who founded Plymouth Colony celebrating the first Thanksgiving, Barth and artist Ursula Arndt (pen drawings with yellow shading) try to provide a truer picture of what actually happened (e.g., Pilgrims were dressed in bright colors, not the drab costumes we traditionally depict them wearing) and how other symbols came to be associated with the holiday. From the turkey and cornstalks and ears of multicolored Indian corn and the fruits of the harvest spilling out of a horn of plenty, Barth explains everything (including my favorite, how we got from Crane Berry to Cranberry). In fact, Barth traces the holiday back to the harvest festivals of the Egyptians, Hebrews, Greek, and Celts. There is also a list of Thanksgiving stories, poems, pageants, and plays for future reference."Turkeys, Pilgrims, and Indian Corn" is one of several books authored by Barth looking at holiday symbols: other books cover Valentine, Halloween, Christmas and Easter. All of these books are written to be accessible to children and even though they are now over a quarter century old, they remain solid sources of information. All in all, this little book is a nice concise presentation of information useful to students and teachers alike at this time of year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barth's Book Informative and Accessible for Young Students
This non-fiction work of Barth's is one of many she has written on the origin of holidays. It is written on a level for children, but withfacts that adults may not know, either.Barth exposes many myths about clothing, etc..concerning the Pilgrims and Native Americans one may not know.Exceptfor some minor editorializationregarding religion, this is an outstandingbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Virginia, and Everybody Else.....
There is a Santa Claus! This is an amazing book, written in documentary style about the existence of Santa and his reindeer. It is a delightful addition to anybody's coffee table at Christmas time or any time. I really love his description of how he found Rudolph, and how he guided the team that one year, a small reindeer with a big heart. The description of the reindeer's year is fascinating!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Magic, Food for the Heart!
This book is an enchanting look into the legend of Santa Clause even the most mature adults will want to believe after reading this book. It's a great book to sit around the fireplace, drink some hot co-co, and read to your children. It's a great way to get you into the sprit of Christmas. It also has some interesting research. The library of Congress put this book under Non-Fiction how can you argue with that. There are also great illustrations in this book. This book is a great Coffee table book to have for the Christmas season. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In the latter part of the 20th century, the adage "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" has evolved far beyond its original intent as an admonition against false vanity to become a cultural manifesto used to explain phenomena as diverse as the art of Andy Warhol and the rise of a multi-billion-dollar cosmetics industry. But is there something more to human reaction to beauty than a conditioned response to social cues? Yes, says Harvard Medical School psychologist Nancy Etcoff. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not scientifically robust, but maybe a good fit for a dinner talk
"Survival of the prettiest" is a very provocative title indeed and it is also a very ambitious subject to say the least. I expected from this book an identification of a phenomenon called "survival of the prettiest" if there is indeed such a thing, and if there is, a robust account of how it can be explained scientifically, because the subtitle of this book is no less than "the science of beauty." But, as a whole, this book fails to give us any satisfactory identification or explanation of the so-called "survival of the prettiest." In fact, I find the book often drifts away to somewhat trivial episodes of some biological or sociological findings to sustain readers' interest. I don't see how such things can be put together to establish the author's ultimate claim that our biological and sociological existence is so designed that the prettiest have been assured a better chance to survive to form the current world. Chapters are not thematically connected with each other and are not well-organized to deliver what the author intends to get across. I expected somehow solid scientific backing for the author's claim, but generally said, this book is a very light read that may not be called the "science" of beauty. I have no objection, however, for the readers who just look for some interesting subjects for light talks with families and friends at the dinner table. This book may be a good fit for that purpose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is beauty an honest advertiser?
Etcoff does a great job showing how our response to beauty is innate and deeply connected with our urge to reproduce. But I would have wished for a bit more exploration of the way beauty also might fool us. For example, she talks about men preferring women with hourglass shapes and more feminine features, because it signals health and fertility. But then she doesn't give information about whether this is true. Are more feminine looking women more fertile in reality? Are they healthier? We don't know.

5-0 out of 5 stars That's hot
This covers the science of beauty, and explains why we say "that's hot!" to someone. Great statistics presented in an exciting way.I used this book for a college paper on attraction and mating--and have given it to several girlfriends since then for flattery!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars well executed on an intriguing topic
Bailey does a few things rather well in this book.Courtship and dating makes for an interesting study in the ways in which our culture has changed over the course of the 20th century (although as another reviewer pointed out, an update in which she discusses developments of the 90s would be most welcomed). Her writing is clear, and it's a quick and satisfying read in cultural history. This is one where the title sums up the book nicely, so if you're intrigued, it's probably a good one for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Courtship is America
A change of courtship occurred from the 1920s and 1940s was the shift from the girl's household to the vechile and away from the watchful eyes of the community. It was a change from sitting at the parlors at the girl's family.A boy would have to be invited to a girl's house causing the woman to have the authority and control, but those things changed.A boy could not go to a girl's house without her permission, but at times changed the guy began to take the authority from the girl.Dating was what was causing the changes of courtship. It moved the girl and the boy outside the home and created a shift from the parlor at the girl's house.Examples would be the replacing of the girl's house with the car.5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Story--But Please, an Updated Version!
I'm a college professor and I use this book in my classes all the time.Students (male and female) love it, and they remember it.Many of them give the book to their parents to read.Bailey is an engaging writer whoemploys a wide variety of sources to demonstrate the path from calling todating to going steady, and the changing meanings of those words.Anhistorian, Bailey provides helpful social and cultural contexts. It'suseful gender history. But what the book really needs is an update thatwould take this topic to the present. The Epilogue doesn't explain enoughabout dating nowadays, and thus the earlier chapters are best. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Top Vintage Halloween Guide
When I started discoveringvintage Halloween items, I came upon Mark Ledenbach's book. It became my leading guide while investigating on eBay. On his web site I could contact him an ask for advice. He was very friendly and helpful. The photos and lay out of his book are fantastic and it is better organized then other books I own. I could not have enjoyed the beautiful graphics and usual, rare items if it were not for this book. You must purchase this whether you are a serious collector or not. Have fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Halloween Collectibles Guide
Price guides frequently suffer from poor photography. This book breaks the mold showing clear color photographs of amazing piece's in Mark's Collection. Halloween ephemera continues to be a popular collectible and this book should be part every collectors library.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read if you're heading to Tuscany
This is an interesting book written by a woman who moved from Australia to Montalcino. There is a lot of Montalcino's fascinating history in the book. While she does steroetype Italians a bit, it isn't too obnoxious. Her description of Montalcino's wine industry (particularly about Brunello di Montalcino) is very interesting and made me really regret not buying some of that wine while we were in Italy. I also enjoyed her descriptions of Tuscan foods.
5-0 out of 5 stars Meeting some of the characters in VB&B
We found this enchanting book in our apt. when we arrived for a 3 1/2 month stay in a small town 10 K's from Montalcino in Sept., 2002.My husband was completely mesmerized and suggested that I also read it.I was immediately caught up in the life in our neighboring town. When visiting one day, we stopped in at the pharmacy (Salvioni's) and met Maurelia, the pharmacist's wife. She was one of the main persons is the story. After a half an hour conversation, she invited us to view the upcoming Festa del Tordo from their balcony (directly overlooking the parade route) and to meet the author, Isabella Dusi. The entire day only clarified our feelings about the warmth and truly embracing, friendly nature of the Italian people.A MUST READ!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Italian Dreams
I am totally in love with everything Italian and with the Italian joy of life.I am planning to take a one-way trip when I retire and hopefully land permanently in some marvelous location such as Montalcino. This book makes us aware not only of the wonders available to us when we visit Italy but to how much we miss by not being prepared for our visits.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Chinese dragons
This is a fascinating book, and I concur with the other reviewers. It is erudite, authoratative, and written in an easy-to-read style. The pictures are a delight.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Dragons
For many centuries that the dragon has been the symbol of China, and has been considered as immortal and omnipresent ever since ancient times. It has belonged to the people, and it has also been the symbol of monarchy and supreme power. The dragon was a mythical beast. It was a concept. But most Chinese people, indeed most Asian people, were convinced that it existed. There are many occasions when there were claims that it had been seen, even as recently as 1920. No other creature in the world could have produced such a far-reaching influence on the mind of man.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source and a labour of love
This book, though short, provides a remarkably detailed survey of the Chinese dragon as represented in the art of his native land. Beginning with an overview of early dragon representations and possible sources of inspiration, Mr. Bates' book goes to considerable effort to describe the many variant images and beliefs that may be found regarding dragons throughout China. I have a hard time finding the kind of information brought together here - dragons in architecture, dragons as represented on dragon robes, the beings and images popularly represented as sons of the dragon - anywhere other than highly specialized scholarly tomes. Finding as much as Mr. Bates has put forth in Chinese Dragons in such an accessible volume is a remarkably pleasant surprise. The twenty-four colour plates are just about worth the price of admission all by themselves. The author clearly knows and loves his subject. ... Read more

I didn't know this book would list the dumb things to do before you die.I'll pass on the bog swimming, testicle festivals and penis parades for the real eventss I don't want to miss like the Balloon Fiesta.

1-0 out of 5 stars 100 things to AVOID before you die, like this book
This book is the worst. The suggestions of things to do are just plain aweful. It seems to suggest every crowded fair and typical tourist attraction in any city. This would be great if you love crowds and mayhem. The suggestions are useless.New Years Eve in Times square?Mardi Gras?Acadamy Awards?Carnaval?Who's not aware of these events? It could have some redeaming qualities if it had suggestions about where to stay and how to plan these types of trips, but it does not offer any other information than the dates and location.Nobel Prize Ceremonies?Running of the Bulls?Come on!!!! What a waste of paper, money and time.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource!
using this book helped me immensely when it came time to raise my own tipi! using only the book and my woefully average construction skills, i easily put up my 22 foot diameter tipi in the northern california woods in a few hours with minimal assistance, the first try!5-0 out of 5 stars Allows us to feel like true aficionadoes
The wealth of information included by the Laubins, and their heartfelt respect for the American Indian, permeate this book. Many tipi construction books these days are written by would-be hippies--but the Laubins come across as the real thing. They had real contact with the tribes who made the various designs and they understood the distinctions between them.Better yet they have done an excellent job at getting these techniques across to the reader. An excellent resource for our business and home pursuits alike and the only book on the subject we recommend.

Helen Bryant has summed up everything you need to make the transition from being "from someplace else" to being a Texan, all in a compact and witty book. I lived in Houston and San Antonio for 17 years and I'm fixin to go back (from California) so I thought I'd better brush up. I feel ready, now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed documentation of the persistence of religious rituals and aesthetic practices
This welcome, timely volume and its accompanying audio CD provide detailed documentation of the persistence of religious rituals and aesthetic practices among Haitians in the Caribbean and in the United States. Richman's study spans two decades of research with Haitian migrants in Virginia and South Florida, as well as a year and a half of fieldwork in Haiti. Especially noteworthy and illuminating are chapter 5, which traces changes in ritual and kinship patterns, and chapter 6, which contains an excellent discourse on "Guinean authenticity." The included CD gives valuable insights into Haitian aesthetic principles that could never have been otherwise conveyed.Highly recommended.Stephen D. Editorial Review

Anyone who has ever traveled in Switzerland cannot help but to have remarked upon the overwhelming tranquility of the country. But this tranquility is illusory. As John McPhee writes in Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A portrait of Switzerland
La Place de la Concorde Suisse is about the Swiss army, but, as they say, when you talk about Switzerland, you talk about their defense. Because everyone in Switzerland is in the army, you are talking about their country. An incredibly rich country, and thus, an incredibly paranoid country. Although many people are now looking at the Swiss, and especially their banks, with new eyes following the revelations of Nazi war booty being hid within their anonymous, numbered accounts, McPhee put them in the spotlight a decade earlier here. While his light is not as bright as some of those today, he did discover some interesting bits which had been hid by shadows before, like their placement of explosives (or identification of where to place such) under each bridge into the country, a discussion of the surreptitious bombing they suffered under Allied planes in the war, and the old boys network that links the army and the industry. At the end, you don't necessarily emerge with a message, but rather a portrait of the country.

5-0 out of 5 stars A faithful rendition of the Swiss military tradition
In German, La Place de la Concorde Suisse is rendered Concordiaplatz, and it is visible from the Jungfraujoch, which means "virgin saddle," and which is reached via funicular railway from Interlaken. Depending upon the season, one can either hike or ski from the Jungfraujoch down the Aletsch glacier to Concordiaplatz and view the redoubt containing the sunken armory described in McPhee's book. There may even be a visible contingent of soldiers guarding and maintaining it, just as their brethren maintain the explosives stashed in the outerworks of all key bridges in the country, or inspect the radar installations on key peaks such as the Weissflhgipfel above Davos. As one who lived and worked in Switzerland for eight years, and whose published memoir, Living Among The Swiss, is listed on this website, I can attest to the accuracy of McPhee's account. Most of my business colleagues were required to take annual two- or three-week military leaves, and one sees soldiers everywhere: on trains, in ski resorts, along low and vulnerable mountain passes such as those north of Sargans, and, increasingly, at airports. Their efficiency of organization has been admired not only by the Israelis, who imitated it, but also by the Russian defense minister, and McPhee accurately captures their esprit de corps - in the process expanding, as usual, the reader's vocabulary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tackling a Sticky Subject
Sturm provides thought-provoking insights into tribal indentity and shows how the idea of "race" changes and evolves over time. A variety of perspectives, sometimes quite humorous, into the obsession of blood quantum. Her stories throughout the book are welcome breaks from the sometimes stuffy academic writing. I think she neglects to mention that government documentatin of people's blood quantum is arbitrary and often incorrect, usually placing people's blood quantum lower than it actually is. Sturm also seems inexplicably harsh on the Cherokee Nation and in particular Ross Swimmer.Other than these complaints, this book is a great exploration of varying viewpoints. ... Read more
