1-0 out of 5 stars Golden Dancer
In the movie Inherit the Wind, the story of Golden Dancer is related to the audience.Golden Dancer was a beautiful and expensive wooden rocking horse that a family bought for its child after saving for it.The first time the child rode the horse, it collapsed as the wood was rotten to the core;so, is the DuFour premise as found on page 37.His conclusion that all students can achieve at the same level (learn specified topics) is asinine. He argues that all that is needed for struggling students is more time and support. He refuses to take into account intelligence and student effort (responsibility) in his equation. If his premise has any chance of coming true, teachers will have to dumb down what they teach to the lowest common denominator. Additionally, he and his colleagues lump all "traditional schools" into the same problem heap. His approach is simplistic and insulting.I would give this book zero stars, but that is not an option. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great techniques, excellent read
"The College Administrator's Survival Guide" was by far the best book I read all summer.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book has much to offer, even to those outside of academia
Although I am not a college admnistrator, I attended a presentation by C. K. Gunsalus (full disclosure:I attended because I know her relatives in my area)and found myself looking forward to her upcoming book. Her commonsense approach to awkward situations and challenging personalities is both novel and imminently practical.I am a small business owner.I encounter the business-world counterparts of the characters in Professor Gunsalus's book regularly, and I can tell you that her approaches work equally well in both worlds. I heartily recommend this book.In fact, I am purchasing a copy for each of my staff with the hope that we can bring Professor Gunsalus's positive and ethical systems into practice in our offices and we will be discussing her examples at our next staff retreat. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Classroom Management
I had to buy and read this book for a classroom management class. It is a great book for comparing the most recent research available. However, you usually need to read five to ten pages of what could have been stated in a paragraph.I do feel that I really understand the material by the time I finish reading the book.I have also used many of the ideas in my classroom to try and improve my classroom management in my student teaching experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars required class reading
I was required to purchase this book for a class I am currently taking. While the content of the book could be useful, the manner in which it is written is laden with ridiculous run-on ideas that could be communicated much more clearly. Here is an example from page 28:

2-0 out of 5 stars I am a high school teacher
As a teacher, I found this book pretty usless. Overall most all education books are worthless nonsense as it's unlike teaching people but running a science lab. Yes, there are good things in here to some degree, but I would find some better way to spend my time to make my teaching better than read this, perhaps make up better lesson plans or a great simulation or power point...? Good luck. I suppose if you want to be a Dr. in Education you might reall like this book, but then please don't make me take anymore worthless classes in which I have to read things like this to keep my job. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for education students and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schools should all be learning organizations
Senge became famous for his book on learning organizations. In this book, he and his co-authors apply those concepts and ideas specifically to educational institutions. While much of their focus is on K12, the ideas and process are applicable to higher education as well. So many management books are really fads with superficial value, but Senge's books are very practical and valuable. This book in particular demonstrates a great deal of passion on the part of the author's for their topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Length appeared overwhelming--but well worth it
Having been given the instructions to select a book of vision for a reading group in a graduate class, I didn't expect to choose one of over 500 pages. The length, however, is indicative of the power this book has for changing minds about schools and the way to structure them for learning.I found myself often reading passages aloud to other educators and anyone who would listen.Instead of stifling my curiosity, the book inspired me to dig deeper on the five disciplines.A great book for creating a vision of education that includes schools where students are learning.I may purchase another one to loan out!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource book for educators
This is an essential book for anyone interested in education. Its comprehensive coverage gives much background, even at the risk of being distracting when you want to follow-up on the leads to so many interesting source-books and links.Though you are told to dip in anywhere, you must read the first section, esp. "The Industrial Age System of Education" by Senge and "A Primer to the Five Disciplines" (Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, Team Learning and Systems Thinking) (pp. 27-93).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Critical advice for all
In our often complicated and frenetic age, this wonderful little book should be read, and internalized, by all faculty and administrators in higher education, who are under a lot of pressure from many sectors. The most commonly heard complaint is, "I don't have time for that...."With years of good and varied experience in higher education and sage insights, Douglas Reimondo Robinson offers advice and practical suggestions for addressing this complaint, for changing one's way of living, for improving teaching and learning and one's own satisfaction with work activities and results. The prose is well writtena and easily readable; and there is clear and evident good humor and a strong sense of concern expressed for people as individuals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally useful for any college instructor/professor
It is no exaggeration to say that the author of this book changed my life.I teach at UNLV, one of three universities at which Doug Robertson established a faculty development center. Before Doug's arrival, I considered myself a fairly good teacher and had won a few teaching awards. In fact, however, I was incredibly ignorant of the principles of effective teaching.During Doug's three years at UNLV, I attended nearly every workshop he offered to faculty on various aspects of teaching and learning. These workshops opened my eyes to the existence of whole universes of knowledge about teaching and learning, and started me on a path of studying and practicing the principles of effective college teaching.
5-0 out of 5 stars You Can (and should) Make Time for This!
"Making Time, Making Change" is the latest publication from Dr. Douglas Robertson, Director of the Teaching & Learning Center at Eastern Kentucky University.A Fulbright Senior Specialist, Robertson has authored a number of successful works on the developmental process of teachers, and currently serves as Senior Editor for New Forum Press's "Practices for Better Teaching" Book Series. He also serves on a number of editorial boards, as well as maintaining an active schedule of consulting and presenting to educational, business, and govenrnmental organizations.

I bought this book for an advanced marketing class in my MBA program. The authors explain in detail the elementary topics which are covered in basic marketing class. For e.g. they talk in detail about segmentation, but they fail to explain thoroughly clustering and factor analysis. The tutorial also lacks depth and does not interpret the numbers.

5-0 out of 5 stars All parents and teachers of the gifted should read this book!
As an educational psychologist, I often recommend this book (along with the classic, Guiding the Gifted) to parents whose bright or gifted children are struggling with social emotional issues. This is a well-written, easy to use guide that looks at important issues such as self-esteem, self-image, and gifted underachievement. The authors go far beyond identifying these problems and offer lots of practical advice on how to help gifted kids who are struggling at home or at school. Clearly written with lots of sidebar material, checklists, anecdotes, and quotes from gifted kids, parents, and teachers - this book is a joy to read. Another great book on this topic is Gifted Children:Myths and Realities by Ellen Winner

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Teachers and Parents
"When Gifted Kids Don't Have All the Answers" isn't just an excellent book for teachers and parents of gifted children (though it definitely is such a book).I just picked this book up at the local bookstore, and, as a gifted child (well, young adult, now) myself, I can honestly say that this book has been just as much help for me as I think it would be for any teacher or parent, if only because it validates everything about gifted kids that I've known and felt ever since I was little.
5-0 out of 5 stars great for teachers
This book is exactly what I hoped it would be- it gives solid information on gifted children and suggests ways to help them talk about concerns and challenges that come with the "gifted" label. This book was a wonderful discovery for me-- a brand new teacher of the gifted. (One chapter is devoted to the teacher.)The information in this book is encouraging for those new to the field and provides valuable insights into some of the general characteristics of gifted kids and the issues they face. It has some questionnaires and material that could easily lead you and into meaningful discussions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A NECESSITY for Early Childhood Educators!!
Whether you are in a daycare, teach prek or k, this is a must have! Just the beautiful color pictures on the glossy paper are worth the price of this book! There are no words to explain how wonderful this book is, I've read it through twice already and have flipped through it dozens of times just to look at the pictures for ideas and motivation/inspiration!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and Colorful
My director bought the book for our reference room and I happened to pick it up because I was struggling with how my room was going to look for the new school year. The pictures are colorful and detailed so you can easily mimic the ideas. Each chapter offers something new to add to your classroom. One thing that I really enjoyed besides the pictures was that the pictures were from schools from all over, not just one school. I would look at a picture and be like wow how can I incorporate that into my classroom. It is a good book for someone looking to spice up their room.

5-0 out of 5 stars Designs for Living and Learning: Transforming Early Childhood Environments
This book is filled with beautiful color photographs of early childhood environments around the country. 1-0 out of 5 stars Scoring Rubrics in the Classroom: Using Performance Criteria for Assessing and Improving Student Performance
The book was not what I expected. I thought I would be receiving a book chock full of child friendly rubrics. Instead it was more for high school teachers or college professors. Pretty much a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Professors Interested in Grading Objectively!
Although one can never be truly objective, this book is a good step in the right direction. It explains what rubrics are, the theory behind them, and testimonials as to how they can be used. Many science professors use rubrics, but few arts faculty are aware that such cut and dried schemes can be useful to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have! Wish I'd had it years ago!
We're a homeschooling family, and have started using this book in our co-op. It's so amazing to watch the idea of "team" unfold as we go along. This book is fantastic, so well organized and well written, and full of so many different ideas, you're bound to find something unique that works for every personality. We've participated in Oddessey of the Mind in the past, and I think this book should be on every group leader's book shelf. If you like helping kids and adults learn to work together, this book will take you to new levels of cooperation, and will likely teach you more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Stuff for Kids
This book is full of fun stuff for kids of all ages. The building and role playing activities work wonderfully as birthday party games and the verbal challenges are excellent diversions on long car trips.
