5-0 out of 5 stars Undiminishing usefulness and interest.
I bought and read this fine collection of stories and essays from the Lowell Offering, the publication edited and written by the young women and girls who worked in the Lowell, Mass. textile mills in the first half of the 1840s, when it was first published. And I have found myself referring back to it and recommending it to others ever since. It is an important introduction to working women's literature.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful as a research tool.
Eisler's collection of pieces from The Lowell Offering is arranged in a user-friendly manner, but is limited in its content. If one cannot get one's hands on the original publications, however, this work is a great stand-in.Highly recommended as a research instrument, as articles are fully footnoted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction
I have used this as the closing text in college courses on modern Germany with great success. It captures the nuances of contemporary Germany rather well: a continuing obsession with order and precision, immigration, a fascination with America, reunification, a new generation's coming to grips with a horrific and inescapable past, and learning to exercise a measured assertiveness in a world still wary of German power. To do all this in such a (relatively) small book and nonetheless remain highly readable is an achievement along the lines of Gordon Craig's *The Germans*.The book is hard to beat as an introduction to contemporary Germany.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gut begonnen ist halb gewonnen (Well begun is half done)
Indeed, Kempe's search provides intrinsic insight into the contemporary, German psyche that avoids historical pedagogy, monotony, and trite narrative. Each chapter reveals its relevance through Kempe's relating of personal, sometimes poignant anecdotes that reveal current issues in German politics and culture.Acknowledging his strong German heritage and personal interest, Kempe takes a critical point-of-view on some of Germany's present/recent past issues: conflicts with the Turks (Germany's largest ethnic minority), Germany's military engagement in Bosnia, etc. However, what truly makes Kempe's work unique is his interweaving of past and present, his personal railing against his Nazi grandfather's heinous crimes and acquittal and praise of modern Germany's informed policies. As Kempe urges and accomplishes himself, the Germans must exact courage in the face of their history and the favorable situation they now find themselves in, for as Geibel once said, "When there is nothing more awesome than fate, it is courage that will bear without a shutter."

4-0 out of 5 stars engaging
Very enjoyable read that examines some of the amazing contrasts in the German pysche. The author's own ancestors included a "good German", composer R. Schumann and a "bad German", a Nazi, and it is interesting to see him grapple with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Empiric Data Inconsistant with Demographic Transition Model
The essential point of this work is the Demographic Transition Model (DTM) is false and worse is contributing to above reasonable fertility rates in many countries and an over all rate of positive population growth world wide. The author does an excellent job of putting forward both the strong case for the DTM (education and affluence => zero growth) and the weak case for the DTM (education and affluence => some reduction in growth). She then shows that niether contingency is supported by various important sources of empirical data.Even worse, policies based on the DTM may even increase fertility. The arguments put forward are coherent, cogent, and reasonably sound. If the DTM is false then this has very far ranging implications for all sorts of ecconomic and aid policies . But more importantly,if the DTM is false there are extremely dire consequences for the health of humanity and the environment. This will mean that the much vuanted "logistic curve" of the DTM will not come to pass and population may easily over shoot ten billion (e.g. will not level off via birth prevention). The issues and arguments put forward in this work are really the essential bench mark for future discussion.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing the Point?
Virginia Abernethy's attempt to form an understanding of problems felt in the US regarding population growth misses the point on several levels. Her continual blame of immigration and putting forth of Buchanistic ideas revolving around an "us versus them" mentality border on racist.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
Negro in the Making of America would be an essential addition the the library of anyone - African-American or not - who seeks to understand how black Americans have contributed to the development of this country.Quarles includes MANY little known facts about the African-American experience that historians have tended to either diminish or overlook entirely. One of the best aspects of the book is that Quarles does not write in a vacuum - this book can be used as a supplement to a traditional history of the United States. All in all, a fantastic book for anyone who cares to learn about the contributions of a generally marginalized group of Americans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Info -- Bad Form
This book provides a wonderful summary of African-American history--it's comprehensive and full of little known historical facts.I think this book provides a very good starting point for anyone that would like to learn more about African-American history.BUT, the grammar, syntax, use of cliches and lack of organization may prove distracting for many readers.I read this book after reading a book on how to improve my own writing and many of the "writing don'ts" in that book find a home in this book.HOWEVER, the information was worth the frustration.

4-0 out of 5 stars You'll learn a lot!
I read this book for my African American history class, and I don't think I would have read it if it hadn't been for the class, but I really liked it!I learned a lot that I know I'll take with me for years to come. All the really big important African American leaders are represented here, and all of their portraits are exciting... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Odyssey
A fascinating and inspirational account of Tsui Chi Hsii's (Charlie Two Shoe's) long-suffering odyssey to come to the United States with his family. It turns out to be a lot more complicated story than you might expect and has the potential for being a Hell of a movie, with lots of opportunities for scenery chewing, but that probably won't happen. In fact there probably won't even be any paperback updating of the still unfinished story at time of publication because one of the coauthors, Michael Peterson, is now a convicted murderer whose other books are long out of print.
5-0 out of 5 stars On A More Personal Note
My boyfriend bought me this book for Christmas, and I was thrilled. Not only am I a social studies teacher and a history buff, but I am priviledged enough to know Charlie Two Shoes. He owns a business in the town where I live and is always there with a smile and a friendly word. He autographed my book with the inscription "May God bless you and yours with health and joy." When I went by today to thank him for the inscription, he told me that there is a lot of history in this book that is not often told. While I have not yet finished the book, I have enjoyed what I have read so far. No matter what crimes have been committed by one of the authors, you should take the time to buy this book and read the interesting true life story of a truly wonderful man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling story of friendship and perseverance
Charlie Two Shoes is a fascinating story of one man's friendship with a group of US Marines and his incredible perseverence in getting re-united with them. Peterson and Perlmutt tell the story through Charlie's eyes andthose of his Marine pals. They give us an intriguing look at life behindthe Bamboo Curtain. More amazing than Charlie's budding friendship -- hewas around the Marines for about four years as a teenager -- is hisenduring perseverance in keeping his dream of a reunion alive. The dreamsurvived decades, including years in a Chinese prison and more under housearrest in his small village. After all that, his eventual reunion in theU.S. had drama of its own. One Marine buddy turned out to be moreinterested in his own fortunes than Charlie's,and Charlie's efforts to staygot mired as much in domestic politics as international. A good read bygifted writers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book for the Miseducated millions in America
David Shipler has truly unvieled truths that the educational system in America has truly miseducated millions of people on the history of Blacks. Until we accept black history wholeheartedley into American history, blacks and whites will remain forever strangers. I've read at least one third of the book and I'm truly amazed at the extensive research shipley has done. I've discovered in his book some artifacts of black history that have long since been conviently left out of America's classrooms.5-0 out of 5 stars Honest look at Black-White Relations
Shipler has compiled a great deal of first person accounts and analyzed them in such a way that the reader cannot deny the truthfulness and depth of the arguments. A must read for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth and more
I found David Shiplers book to be very true and to the point. Being a person of color, I already know how we (people of color) feel about race relations. I found it most helpful to see it through the eyes of a whitemale. I have been tempted to buy a box of this book and carry it with me togive to people. I believe everyone should read this book and debate thecontent. Of course, not everyone will agree, but for those who are justbeginning to explore race relations, this is a great introduction and amost interesting read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
My Father's side of the family grew up in Cicero, and this book is a fantastic resource to see what it was like for my ancestors. Some of it is a little dense, and it focuses quite a bit on the church and religion, but that's understandable since that was one of the main things that held the Chicago dutch together.I have to give it 5 stars, though, just for the fact that there is a picture of my grandpa in this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Where are all the other Dutch/American books ????
This has to be the best Dutch/American book written to date. Countless times I have been dismayed at the lack of Dutch/American books written , and the lack of those displayed or for sale in predominant Dutch areas. This book whets the appetite , but we need more. More books on the old country in English , and more on the Dutch immigration to the US. Read more
