1-0 out of 5 stars Empty Logic
There are good books on demographics and the depopulation crisis that is fast approaching, but this is not one of them. The author, Phillip Longman, ignores the obvious causes of depopulation while at the same suggesting solutions which, at best, can only be temporary fixes.
1-0 out of 5 stars Response to Anders Tronsen
Given the nature of the medium in which we are writing, W. Hinkley cannot be faulted for not providing an exhaustive treatment of the "issues" that you raised. Yet the issues you've given us--war, famine, natural causes--and YOUR failure to address them indicates your own duplicity.
1-0 out of 5 stars What Planet Does This Man Live On?
Looking at the reality of the world population growth one wonders where Mr. Longman gets his ideas from. The world population will reach nearly 9,000,000,000 in the next 40 years. One must ask, where are those people coming from if not from increased births. The global economy of the future will suffer from a plethora of people not a lack of them. It should be of no surprise that the countries that have taken over the employment opportunities formerly enjoyed by the more developed countries are the ones whose populations are growing. Paying people to have children has long been a tradition in the U.S. Only we call it Welfare. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, raises important questions
This book presents information that could turn out to become important for theories of demographic change. 2-0 out of 5 stars It's good, but not...
If you are looking for do-it-yourself abortion information like I was, this is not a good book for that. It is a history book. It's good, but not an abortionary (abortion dictionary).

3-0 out of 5 stars From Malthus to morass
The purpose of Turchin's tome is to answer the question "Does Population Ecology Have "Laws"? (the subject of an earlier paper by him). Turchin wants to claim that population ecology is a "mature science", and uses some largely philosophical arguments to claim similarities to Newton's laws. I was not convinced.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential work for professional
Politicians often say things like, "Let's not follow each other off a cliff like lemmings," but it's not true that lemmings really follow each other off a cliff in nature. What IS true is that some species of lemmings have huge populations some years, and become almost extinct in other years.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Painful But Essential Reading
Sundown Towns goes a long way towards explaining the US' pervasive racial problems by examining a phenomenon many white people had thought dead and gone: sundown towns (cities or neighborhoods where racial minorities were not allowed to live or even be present after dark).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Immigration Debate Makes This Book Timely
This book is a fascinating, gut-wrenching read. The willingness of people to be so cruel to one another is startling. Many of the actions taken to exclude Blacks give the term "domestic terrorism" new meaning (Tulsa, I'm talking about you!) I only wish that I was more familiar with the areas of the Midwest that the author focused on. I'm sure there are many communities in California that didn't get mentioned that could have, if the author had grown up here.
4-0 out of 5 stars An important treatment of a neglected aspect of American race relations
"Sundown Towns" examines an underappreciated aspect of segregation and racism in the United States. The book provides a useful history of how the racial distribution of towns changed from the Civil War era to the present and how various measures were used to keep towns White or "Caucasian" (a category that was used to exclude a wide variety of peoples). I've lived in or near several towns given prominence in the book and have had family or friends who lived near other places. The book helped answer questions I had living in South Central Indiana in the '80s, where I was struck by the number or "all white" towns and the odd history of the sizable college town where I lived (Bloomington had no non-student African-American community "of record" until large industrial employers like GE came in the 1950s, an odd circumstance for a sizable town, with important commercial and government functions, as well as a major university). The book is particularly damning in its attention to racial segregation and repression in the North and West, although it is rather lacking in attention to the complexity of living arrangements in the South.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Extra Star for Cool Idea That is Also Uplifting

4-0 out of 5 stars Travels with Charlie -- updated
This very much reminded me of Steinbeck's classic travelogue, Travels with Charlie, in which an educated EAst Coast intellectual travels America's heartland and marvels at how different most people's lives are from his own.Only this time, it's more methodologically sound and backed up with data.

5-0 out of 5 stars best law book ever
Some reviewer for a statistics journal called Phil Good's "Applying Statistics in the Courtroom" the best book ever written on statistics and the law.Given the fine books by Finkelstein, by Gastwirth and the deGroot, Feinberg and Kadane book, I think that was a gross overstatement.Phil does however get away from legalese and tries to present key issues.1-0 out of 5 stars Statistics for statisticians

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and insightful
This was extremely eye-opening for me. I loved the fact there were black people, young black people, in that time who were collectively doing what they could for us to come up at that crucial period in the late '60s. I don't think the Panthers get the respect they deserve in terms of their part in the Civil Rights era. To some, they had a nonconventional way of getting their message across, but I admired their courage and their intelligence. Hilliard examines everyone who was a crucial part of the movement, including Kathleen and Eldridge Cleaver, Lil' Bobby Hutton, Bobby Seale, Geronimo Pratt, Huey Newton, and others. He also discusses his own personal demons and how it afflicted him as well as the party. All in all, it was a very good read for me and was much needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring story.
This is I think is first book I ever read by a Black Panther Party member. Most certaintly, the BPP was extremely controversial and weighted down with informants, provocateurs, and sell-outs. But Hillard wasn't one of them. He seems to give an honest account of his involvement in the Party. His story will give you great respect for a group of brothers and sisters who dared to take a stand against White supremacy, police brutality, and other forms of injustices. His is an inspiring story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to any comprehensive ethnic issues collection
David Hillard and Lewis Cole's This Side Of Glory (1-55652-384-X, $18.95) provides the autobiography of Hillard and his involvement with the Black Panther Party. The Party's history, focus, and events are revealed in this eyewitness account. Essential to any comprehensive ethnic issues collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A glass more than half-full?
Given that our vision is so heavily freighted with the moment, ideas of human progress are in short supply lately. Although not an easy ride, economic historian and Nobel laureate Robert William Fogel's survey of the long run, at least in respect to human morbidity, leisure and longevity, provides escape velocity from pressing concerns about war, pandemic, income inequality and the health of the ecosphere. It might be as another noted economist, Alfred Lord Keynes, said in a different context: In the long-run we are all dead. But, the long-run seems to be getting longer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brand Scan
Both authors are from public health schools. One is from Amherst, MA. Go Umass! This does make studying statistics more interesting. One can easily adapt the sampling design and methods to marketing surveys that are required of MBA students.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read But too many Errors
This book is very practical. It is easy to get along as all the formulas are summarized in a nice way.
5-0 out of 5 stars A review, solely about the text.
I am a Ph.D. student in public health (epidemiology), and I already have a Ph.D. in the behavioral sciences. I will sign my name, unlike the other writer. Rather than solely talk about the issues of the text, the student complains about the administration of the course in question.
