Very Good Introduction to Trollope
So many reviewers remark on how what is described in this book is still the way we live now.But that didn't interest me.Although that may or may not be true, it certainly is not interesting enough to sustain 800 pages.
And the way we still live today
Trollope weaves multiple plot lines with ease and confidence such that the reader is never in doubt. Trollope explores the thin veneer of civility and sophistication that covered society. Those who are decent and upright differ only slightly from the social climbing, or money-hungry. Trollope exposes the foibles of social climbers and get-rich-quick investors.
Fascinating read on the changing of Victorian society!
I just finished this nice long read, and I must say it was very well written: Trollope shows us a fascinating view of how the changes in society can affect the people living in it.We are given a view of all sorts of characters: from the volatile, swindler Melmotte to the swaggering, gambling coward Felix Carbury, to his antithesis, his staid, country cousin Roger Carbury, and Felix's silly & conniving mother Lady Carbury, to his sweet & saintly sister Hetta Carbury...the mousey Marie Melmotte, the marriage schemer Georgiana Longestaffe, the wonderful yet fallible Paul Montague, and the independent & brash American, Mrs. Hurtle.These & many other characters collide to give us a fascinating read, as their lives intertwine again & again, on so many levels.

It damns the dam with precise and powerful arguments.

I need more information
I was recommended this book by my sister who is whole-heartedly devoted to the concepts in this book.She's a home-school mother of 5 (and possibly more in the future).I value her opinion greatly so I read this book.
This book is a must read before you decide on birth control!
First of all, this book is very special to me.It was the help of this book, that made my husband decide to get his vasectomy reversed.Something that I had been praying for three years to happen!Rick and Jan Hess go into marvelous explanation of why God should be your birth controller.
A scripturally sound read for intelligent Christians
An entertaining read, I found this book light hearted and funny... an interesting path to take considering the controversial subject!Obviously, Christians are on both sides of this issue.The Hess family does an excellent job of accurately handling scripture and sharing their own family experiences.

Garbage History created by activists for politicians
Ron Takagi's weak excuses attempting to explain away the disloyalty of Japanese-Americans segregated at Tule Lake is absurd! Well Done Summary and Analysis of WWII Internment
This book is a masterful summary of events surrounding the wartime relocation and detention activities, and a strong indictment of the policies that led to them. The report and its recommendations were instrumental in effecting a presidential apology and monetary restitution to surviving Japanese Americans and members of the Aleut community. This isn't a report. It's a legal brief!
This is what happens when the history of the United States is decided via politically motivated congressional commissions. Personally, I believe the role of the legislature is to legislate, not re-educate.Read more

Pretty darn good!
Enjoyed it immensely.Covers the Sicilian immigrant experience with a focus on America very well.If you enjoy this book you undoubtedly will also appreciate Eleven Days in August, a delightful book by Amatore Mille that covers his relationship with his southern Italian grandparents.

Captures the sentiment, but not always the facts
As a second and third generation Italian American and a scholar, I found the book warmed my heart but saddened my soul. The following example is telling. The unwarranted praise for Columbus glosses over his (mis)deeds from the first page. Yes, he wrote how "kind and trusting these people are" but then wrote that those qualities would make them easy to enslave. (He does mention slavery later on, but such "negative press" is glossed over. A fault throughout the book.) As for protecting the people from sailors - all I can say is read Columbus's actual diary yourself. The book is unbalanced and inaccurate in many areas, but I do not have the time to review all of those errors here, although some are pointed out by other reviewers. This book will reinforce some biases held by many Italian Americans, including most of my relatives (many of whom loved the book), perhaps dispel a few held about Italian Americans by others, but it falls short - more by sins of omission and a lack of dimension and complexity. I was sorely disappointed by that, even though the nostalgic sentiment I felt as Mangione provided a framework for the stories of my grandparents, was appreciated, the book did not do justice to its overly ambitious title.

I'm not Italian, bought this for someone else a long time ago
So before time to give it, I had time to read it.What a history!!This should be required reading for EVERY person in America with Italian heritage! Learn, see what drove them here. Women I never knew existed
I was uplifted and very satisfied to be exposed to the range of women who have fought for basic humanitarian rights in the southern coal regions.These are normal people making their small difference in a world they seem to love.I would have loved to hear more about the assumed women listed such as Mother Jones, Sara Ogen Gunning, Alice Lloyd, Bessie Smith (all of whom can be looked up).Most especially, I would love to know more about Granny Hager, and Widow Combs.They are mentioned in this book briefly and there seems to be no other record of them.Read more

Extremely helpful
I am using this book for a graduate level class on GIS applications in public health and it has proven to be tremendously helpful. I didn't know a thing about GIS before but, this book helps to provide the basics and clearly explains the applications of GIS in today's health systems.
