5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study of sexuality from Victoria to the pill
The Long sexual revolution is one of the best studies of Victorian and early twentieth century sexuality to appear in recent times. Dr Hera Cook, a young scholar at Sydney University, Australia, has carefully reviewed the old debate (ignited by Peter Gay's Education of the senses) about whether the Victorians really were sexually inhibited, or whether they just preferred not to talk about it. With a wealth of new evidence from diaries, surveys, letters and sex manuals, she shows convincingly that the older view is closer to the truth: that if Victorian women were meant to enjoy sex, they did not get very much. This was a matter of both lifestyle choices and the unavailability of safe, effective contraception. To enjoy the benefits of the Victorian economic miracle and fruits of Britain's world-wide trade, middle class couples had to limit the number of their offspring; to do this their main form of birth control was abstinence, and they thus paid a heavy price in sexual denial. Using indicators such as family size and illegitimacy rates, Cook shows that sexual repression reached its peak in the Edwardian era, relaxed slightly after the First World War, and broke down in the 1930s, when the possibility of contraception (particularly in the form of condoms) permitted the gradual decoupling of sex and reproduction - a process not complete, however, until the introduction of the pill in the 1960s. The long sexual revolution sheds a fresh and revealing light on many aspects of sexuality not covered in detail, such as prostitution, venereal disease and the well known Victorian efforts to suppress masturbation among children. It argues that this taboo was an important factor in the growth of sexual inhibition, since children must be allowed to explore and fondle their bodies if they are to acquire the skills and confidence they will need to give sexual pleasure to themselves and their partners later on. Dr Cook does not mention circumcision, but it is significant that the period of sexual repression she identifies coincides exactly with the Victorian vogue for circumcising boys, and her book thus complements such recent studies as David Gollaher's Circumcision: A history of the world's most controversial surgery. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...
I thought this book was written a little differently, but I also found it helpful. It was cool how Sojourner Truth's Book of Life was written inside of it along with a whole separate book. There was a lot of good information in it. I used this book for a school project and it worked out great. The book was useful and interesting to read because there are letters from people she knew that were written to her. I enjoyed reading this also recieved info from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth about Margaret Sanger
This book is required reading for anyone who wants to fully understand the philosophy of Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood.Blessed Are The Barren presents, in well written and painstakingly researched detail, how the population control movement was launched in the U.S. under acarefully calculated guise.Donovan and Marshall extensively document theimportant role racism and eugenics played in the thinking of Sanger andother early "family planning" activists -- neither of which isusually mentioned in Sanger's whitewashed biographies. This is the mostinformative book I've ever read on the social history of PlannedParenthood, and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Go, There's a Sale at the Mall
In Point of Purchase, author Sharon Zukin explores why we shop and how it affects us, individually and as a society. She looks at the history of shopping, from a brief look at ancient Roman olive oil shops in Pompeii to a more elaborate history of department stores in New York. All that is interesting, but I found the sections on current shopping the most intriguing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tracing the history of American shopping
New in paperwork is an excellent social history, Sharon Zukin's Point Of Purchase: How Shopping Changed American Culture. Zukon is Broeklundian Professor of sociology at Brooklyn college and City University of New York: her background in cities and culture lends well to an analysis of shopping as the American dream ideal, tracing the history of American shopping from mid-19th century to modern shopping trends. A fascinating social history evolves.

William Ivy Hair in this fast-paced, readable book accomplishes more in acouple of hundred pages than many of our more ponderous historians haveaimed to achieve in far-bulkier works. 5-0 out of 5 stars I could not set this book down.
This was a great book. Besides all else mentioned already,it reads like a story. No theoretical arabesques, just nitty gritty factual details so you can see connectednesses for yourself. Baltzell's very factual illustrations of idealisms' realities and human tensions towards cultishness versus civic participation serve as a useful lense and compass to me ever since reading this book. I recommend it whenever I can, particularly to someone who, like me, may at one time, be shocked by a human experience or contrast and want to ask why. I'd recommend it to any one ever involved in a cult. Its readability is comforting and enthralling, and it is deeply seated in a sense of the continuity of history and human nature. I found it a healing book. I'm sorry Mr. Baltzell is no longer alive so I can thank him. Read every crumb of this book. Its thick, but allot the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating study of social leadership in America
Digby Baltzell uses the history of Philadelphia and Boston as very real examples of two types of leadership. In Boston, the "BostonBrahmin" elites formed a strong upper class that was not tolerant, certainly, but took responsibility for community life and exercised atremendous influence on American culture, politics, arts, and science. InPhiladelphia, the "Proper Philadelphians" were charming,tolerant--and deeply irresponsible, abandoning any role in governing thecity and making it by common agreement the worst run city in the UnitedStates. When Philadelphia needed a mover and shaker, it imported some onefrom outside, like Ben Franklin.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars more truths being told
I have just started reading this book, what a breath of fresh air!Shouldn't more people know what is known in this book? Why can't the government think like it's people,I mean don't they know how people feel about some of these things, and can't they learn things from this and other similar books? The Myrdal ideas and theories from the past, obviously have only worked against the majority of citizens, they should be thrown out and forgotten about, things just won't work as long as the past theories and ideas persist and are crammed at us !Obviously, I'm not that far into this book yet, but, am impressed with what I've read already. This book may have you asking a lot of questions, such as how did we get in this mess, etc. but there are answers hereto many questions that will pop up in your mind as you read. The first couple pages may surprise you, but, I think it's written like that to wake you up to what comes in the following pages, read on and you'll see.

1-0 out of 5 stars Time is ripe for whites to embrace Asian superiority.
Study after study, it has been demonstrated that Asians have higher IQs than whites, lower crime rates than whites, and make better parents.(For card-carrying members of the KKK: Don't take my word for it.Go read "The Bell Curve" and Rushton's little book.)Since many whites have used this book to bolster their white supremacist views against blacks and hispanics, it is only fair for whites to acknowledge Asian superiority, based on the conclusions of these very books.Fair is fair, right?

3-0 out of 5 stars Bold, Hateful, and Truthful
This book mostly targets against blacks. The motivation of the writers of this book can be summed up as hatred against what they believe are genetically inferior people who are ruining the social, economic, and demographic fabric of this country. It is important to note, in American History, such racial hatred has been previously targeted against the Jews, the Chinese, the Irish, and the Italians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information. What shall we do with it?
In their academic work, Bare Branches, Valerie Hudson and Andrea den Boer describe the causes of the high sex ratio in China and India, observed effects and future implications. They also suggest policy options and evaluate their merits.
1-0 out of 5 stars What about countries with higher gender ratio?
According to data from www.geohive.com, the average world gender for 2005 was estimated to 101, and from the same data China (106) and India (105) occupied the 15th and 23rd places respectively. The honor place goes to United Arab Emirates with a ratio of 214.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scary Implication of Depopulation
There are millions of missing women in India and China--girl babies aborted or killed. What are the policy implications for a lopsided surplus of men for a country? "Bare Branches" explores this problem. Historically, the problem meant high crime and wars, and, oddly, a dramatic drop in freedom and value for women. An intesting book, should be widely read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Reply to the story of the whole, not the individual
I, personally, have never been into comic books, but since reading Maus I and Citizen 13660 I have found a new appreciation for art mixed with text. This graphic novel is excellent.I disagree with the idea that we need to know the "deep insight into the feelings of the author"; that is what makes this novel so powerful. She intentionally leaves the emotions up to her audience. This is not necessarily a story about woe is me.It is a story about survival, when life hands you lemons you make lemonade and you share it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Publishing CITIZEN 13660 Okubo's Lifelong Dream
This powerful graphic novel was drawn and written by Artist Mine Okubo when she was a teenager at a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Okubo's elegant black and white drawings and wry text make CITIZEN 13660 on a par with Art Speigelman's MAUS as a war time testimony.
3-0 out of 5 stars A story of the whole, not the individual
I find I'm not all that attracted to graphic novels of this type.I tend to focus more on the text of books, and leave the pictures up to my own mind. With this, you lose your own visual interpretation of the text, and since I'm focused on the text, I didn't spend enough time really looking at the art.I glanced at the art on each page, but I feel if I spent more time on each illustration, I might have a better appreciation for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inequality Transition
Glenn Firebaugh is the first scholar to document an extraordinarily important pattern in modern economic history.5-0 out of 5 stars Much of What You Thought You Knew Is Wrong
Much of what you thought you knew is wrong! If you are seriously interested in globabilization and recent trends in world income inequality, you need to read Glenn Firebaugh's The New Geography of Global Income Inequality (Harvard U. Press, 2003).In a straightforward and detailed presentation, Firebaugh explains the arithmetic of inequality -- how it divides into within-nation and between-nation components. He then charts each of these, both over-time and at the present time. You will learn where the U.S. fits in the world, and which countries and continents are at the top and the bottom in terms of income and inequality in income. Most important, you will see that, contrary to much current journalistic and even scholarly writing, world income inequality has actually been decreasing since the 1990s.This books complements and in important ways adds to recent books by Stiglitz, Easterly, Soros, Bhalla, Diamond, and Landes
