5-0 out of 5 stars the truth
s.t.g. whoever that is, who reviewed this book obviously overlooked the fact that all his referneces are documented page by page, accurately. and that person has also bought into the lie that planned barrenhood actually helps people. they kill them, if they arent born yet and want to eliminate all who are not rich and white. how evil can you get?? and then to find out the march of dimes works with them is even worse, i mean, when they say they prevent birth defects? how? by preventing the people, and i cannot wait until that evil organization self implodes and goes away. good for youtelling the truth no one wants to hear, mr. grant. and dont stop!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Damned Lies
This book is filled with inaccuracies, half truths, misinformation and an astounding number of outright lies. Its contorted logic is sometimes hard to follow. This work is best left for those fanatics who want a book that justifies their fear and their distorted us v. them moral values.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed But Not Bad
Except for the flowery language, which makes one think the author wishes he were writing a 19th-Century novel, this is an accurate and disturbing book.If you don't mind a bunch of alliteration, nouns modified by half a dozen adjectives, etc., the book should hold your interest whether you agree with the author or not.I agree with the author's stance on abortion; I do not, however, completely agree with his tirade against birth control.Furthermore, I find some of his manufactured dialogue hard to believe. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Marriage of Form and Function
Cynthia Brewer is one of the top writers in cartographic visualization, and is perhaps the top expert in the use of color in cartography. The maps in this book are both beautiful and informative. She makes use of both hue and intensity to map two related variables at a time. For example, she shows relative population density as well as changes in density on the same map, making it easy to find, for example, low density areas that are increasing in density.Rather than a reference book for demographers, this is a showcase of great maps. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful look at a noble people
The Puritans are often maligned today as a 'narrow minded' 'intolerant' group of religious 'extremists' who hanged people they believed to be Witches and actually banned Christmas
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
This is a very successful attempt to produce an overview of the Puritan experience in New England.Arguably the most important single group on American history, this relatively small collection of religously inspired immigrants generated a number of cultural and political trends that continue as important features of American life.Bremer provides the basic narrative structure, social and demographic history, and theological history of the Puritan experiment in a concise and well written book of less than 250 pages.Readers will be struck with how features of the Puritan experience continue to resonate today, particularly certain aspects of the Puritan religous experience. Also impressive is how aspects of Puritan history in the 17th century prefigured events of the later 18th century. The New England colonies' conflicts with the centralizing tendency of the later Stuart kings, the resentment towards imperialistic economic policies, the emphasis on relatively broad political participation, all have important parallels in the struggles that lead up to the Revolution. Not surprisingly, religion occupies a central place in this book.Bremer does a particularly good job of describing the Puritans' sense of themselves as a chosen people, their involvement in a trans-Atlantic religous culture, and their complex theology.Perhaps the only deficiency, and this is relatively minor, is Bremer's less thorough treatment of the 18th century. While the narrative continues up to the death of Jonathan Edwards in 1758, the treatment of the 18th century is more superficial than of the 17th century. This is probably an understandable result of Bremer's desire to keep this book concise. There is also a very nice annotated bibliography. In using the latter, readers should bear in mind that this edition was published in 1995 and there have been important works published since 1995.There is no reference, for example, to George Marsden's outstanding biography of Jonathan Edwards, which was published last year.Overall, this is a very valuable distillation of the broad and impressive body of scholarship concerning these fascinating people. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
Building a Better Race is a compelling narrative. This is an important addition to the history of eugenics, weaving together evidence from patient records, professional journals, popular magazines, manuscript collections, and eugenics tracts. It is also very well written and an enjoyable read.

Editorial Review

A pioneering sociologist, educator, essayist, activist, and political theorist, W.E.B. Du Bois was one of America's great intellectuals. This second volume by David Levering Lewis picks up where his Pulitzer Prize-winning Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Biography of an amazing man
W.E.B. DuBois was born 2 years after slavery was abolished, and died two years before the wide ranging civil rights acts of 1965 were enacted.During this century, America was transformed from a largely rural nation whose economy depended on agricultural production (not the least of which was the cotton grown in the south by slaves) to an urban nation with the world's largest economy, built on industrial production.Throughout most of this transformation, DuBois was the loudest and clearest voice proclaiming the injustices suffered by the nation's Blacks.5-0 out of 5 stars Rush job at end
I agree with Schmerguls, above, that David Levering Lewis' vol. II of DuBois has too many typographical errors; the endnotes are a nightmare; and that it needs a bibliography. But the book is more than a flawed book about a flawed man.It is readable, in general; Lewis could have skipped some of the big words in favor of words that ordinary readers could understand without a dictionary simultaneously open.Lewis uses colorful, precise verbs in many cases and succeeds in bringing characters to life in one word descriptions. He humanizes DuBois by discussing his friendships and by examples (through verbs and description ) of DuBois's autocratic manner. If this biography does not deserve a Pulitzer, I am curious what biography Schmerguls would consider worthy? The Oakland reviewer, above, is more on the mark in that this is a thoroughly researched and keenly insightful recounting of the life of a towering figure.I, too, sorely miss a bibliography. And the last quarter of the book is indeed full of typographical errors which a careful copy editor should have caught. One hopes that there will be a revision someday with all corrections made.Still, this is a wonderful history of the times and of an amazing (though "flawed," like the rest of us) figure in American history.DuBois certainly provoked solid thought at a time when mainstream America was unsure that Negroes could think.I have heard David Levering Lewis speak on C-Span.He writes better than he speaks because he says "Uh-uh" too much as he searches for those big words. But I'm so grateful that his work on DuBois came to fruition in my lifetime so that I could read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Flawed book about a flawed man
It seems odd that Lewis's biography of W. E. B. DuBois should be felt to be entitled to two Pulitzer prizes. The author disapproves at least on the surface of some of DuBois's more outrageous positions, but yet Lewis's biases show thru, and one gets the idea that in general if Lewis had not had the benefit of what has happened in regard to Communism in the past 15 years Lewis would be even more approving of DuBois's opinions than he now indicates. As others have mentioned, it is disconcerting to have a book from a major publisher have so many typographical errors. One would think they could have been easily avoided. And the endnotes are a nightmare.Instead of footnotes there are page notes in the back, with no discernible system: some indicate sources, but I found them very user-unfriendly.There is no bibliography as such, and overall I thought the book poorly edited. But the book tells a story of interest, especially during the period from 1945 to 1963. ...
