5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Breath Taking
This book is an amazing book and essential for firefighters, as well as enthusiasts or people who just wants to learn something. From start to finish, this book is packed full of facts, based on the history of FDNY and exploring the truth behind the brotherhood involved in the fire house.I have yet to place this book aside, it is an utmost favorite of mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like the FDNY, if you want to know its History, this is the book!
This book from start to finish is packed with information that you would otherwise never have heard about. The history of one of the most famous Fire Depts in the US is more than I ever imagined, naming some of the early firefighters who would have otherwise slipped into the sandglass of time. The accounts of fires and incidents in the citys history do more credit than you will ever hear about anywhere else.It shows why today Firefighters of the modern day FDNY fight so hard to keep hold of their history and tradition. Before you make judgement on these guys read this book. This is what they are all about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Double Buffs delight
Loved it! Been looking for something like it ever since. I recommend it to my "reader" friends often. As a New York City history buff I found it to be readable and enlightening. And as a fire buff, since 9/11 I can't get enough of this stuff, I found it to be well-researched and thorough. I knew what I was getting into when I read the jacket. Golway's firefighting roots make him a fan of The Bravest but I didn't mind the sentimentality because that's partially why I picked the book in the first place.A fitting tribute to working class heroes of the past 300+ years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Rescue Gone Wrong - Review of "Dead Men Tapping: The End of the Heather Lynne II" by Kate Yeomans
I grew up in Newburyport, Massachusetts - within a stone's throw from the mouth of the Merrimac River. We lived close enough to the river that I could tell by the smells in the air how high or low the tide was at any moment. So, when I learned that "Dead Men Tapping" told the tale of an ill-fated fishing boat based in Newburyport, I knew I had to read it. It was as if the story of "The Perfect Storm" were being retold, but with connections even closer to home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book really brought alive the story of the trapped miners!I loved it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wanted more
Pretty easy read and insightful into the ordeal these nine men and their families went through.But... it could have been so much more. Goodell simply justs organizes their comments and adds a little info here and there. I would have prefered to have read an account researched by an author where he took those interviews and created a mesmorizing narrative. What it is now is an okay book that you can read in a day.But what it could have been would have been a gripping story that made you feel like you were in that mine with them or waiting in the fire station with friends and family hoping for the miracle that came. Also, the pictures left a lot to be desired. The diagram of the mine was helpful but most of the pictures were of rescuerers not mentioned in the book or faint photos of the men as they came to the surface. Also I kept having to look back at the jacket to connect who was whom because the author used nicknames but the diagram had real names. Otherwise an okay book so I give it 3 stars. The story of the miracle itself is worth 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars An emotional read
To anyone with doubts that there is a God and that HE does perform miracles - this is a MUST READ. In their own words, the 9 miners tell the story of what it was like to be trapped over 200 feet below the surface with water rising all around them.A very emotional book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Are these authors aware that the WWF is run by Prince Philip and the European Black Nobility?
Probably not, but then how many people really are?Genuine conspiracy theory is a lot like the Tao - if fools did not laugh it would not be the real thing. But paranoia clearly goes with the territory, and it is easy for someone who does see he big picture to impute sinister motives to people genuinely on the side of truth who do not (yet) make out the deeper outlines of "the great work."
3-0 out of 5 stars solid analysis, flawed conclusions
This small pamphlet style book has high color illustrations and is particularly useful for exposing the controlled demolition of WTC7 and the Twin Towers, owned by Larry Silverstein and the shadowy Blackstone group. It also features a pleasant, albeit short analysis of the CFR and Federal Reserve, just some of the gangster Globalist tentacles behind the attacks.

5-0 out of 5 stars riveting: death, sex and uranium
I read half of this while waiting for the train! The author's style is very clear and he's a good storyteller. While some of the chapters were a bit sensationalized, this book is well worth your time and money. "Idaho Falls" is more interesting than 99% of the contemporary fiction out there :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
In the interest of full disclosure I will say up front that I am not in any way connected to The Site (locals' name for the facility out on the desert now called the INEEL)I have friends who work there and friends who would love to see it shut down.4-0 out of 5 stars Important lesson from history
McKeown does a good job of pulling together the many strands of this story, giving just enough technical detail to know what went wrong, and enough (relevant) human interest to keep the story interesting. Yes, it's true that Idaho Falls isn't exactly a brand-new 'revelation', but few outside the nuclear industry have heard about it, or know its significance. McKeown shows that the ultimate cause was a failure by the designers of the reactor to take into account Murphy's Law - if something can go wrong, it will. This is a common thread running thru nuclear incidents ranging from Windscale to Chernobyl. With some energy experts now calling for us to embrace nuclear power again in order to meet energy demand without triggering excessive global warming, McKeown's book is a very timely reminder of why and how things went wrong 50 years ago, and what we need to look out for the second time around (if nuclear power is granted one) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Rally the troops
This was a decent Smart Rant. I agree with Giroux so it made it an (mostly) enjoyable read. I would not recomend this book for anyone who is not already on board with a far left agenda. It will just be frustrating. It would be like me reading a book by Rush Limbaugh. Giroux's rant is full of tricky rhetoric that sits well with his allies, for the most part, but would be unbearable for his enemies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Youth, Politics, and Justice in an Age of Fear
In The Abandoned Generation, Giroux goes beyond asking those who are already in the same political camp to agree with his study.Giroux asks everyone to reflect on what has been central to America's beliefs about democracy, question those features in our current society that undermine those beliefs, and envision how we can build on the democratic legacy that made our country great in the first place.Unfortunately, all three of these objectives often require time, deliberation, and explanation beyond the 10-second soundbytes that we get as pre-regurgitated pablum on the daily news and thus might require someone, such as Giroux, to devote his/her time to engaging citizens in thoughts and sentence structures more complex (and interesting) than those we would find in a Jane and Dick book.Time, deliberation, and explanation are, indeed, difficult in our age of quick fixes, and using them is often traded for the ease with which we would rather lay blankets of blame on the most vulnerable parts of the population, as opposed to lifting the reactionary quilts that try to cover the causes of our crisis.5-0 out of 5 stars Possibilities for a better future
Henry Giroux writes with a level of compassion, insight, and clarity that informs, astonishes and inspires. In these times of despair, deceit, cynicism, and war, Giroux provides probing and thoughtful analysis, sobering and searing revelations, and, perhaps most importantly, always a sense of hope in and for humanity. His latest work "Abandoned Generation" should be required reading for teachers at all levels, and educators in all domains, as well as every citizen who cares about the future of our youth, the future of education, and the possibilities for a more meaningful, engaged, caring and participatory democracy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A riveting moment-by-moment re-enactment of the sinking of the Soviet sub Kursk
For a riveting moment-by-moment re-enactment of the sinking of the Soviet sub Kursk and its dramatic rescue, don't miss Cry From The Deep: The Sinking Of The Kursk, The Submarine Disaster That Riveted The World And Put The New Russia To The Ultimate Test. In 2000 the giant nuclear sub sank and over a hundred men struggled to survive as the Russian Navy failed to acknowledge their plight. The Russian government rebuffed attempts at rescue and this account reveals the deceptions and conspiracies which revolved around the disaster.
4-0 out of 5 stars Exploring the personal and institutional aspects of a tragedy
n mid-August 2000 much of the world riveted its attention on the Barents Sea as reports came in of the sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk. How did this happen? Were there survivors? Ramsey Flynn, an award-winning magazine journalist, was so drawn in that he knew he had to write about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars DO MAPS TELL ALL
I wouldn't describe this book as one that "I couldn't put down" as they say, but it made some interesting points.Maps of dangerous areas can mislead, for example, by giving the impression that a danger is especially great in one area because it is concentrated there, even though it may actually be worse elsewhere where population density is greater.Readers may also overreact to obvious and publicized hazards, such as a power plant, while ignoring more common threats such as auto accidents.Anyone who likes maps or uses them extensively for information will get something from this publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book about Emergency Planning
I use this book as additional reading for my Technology in Emergency Management course. This is a great book connecting mapping, hazards, and technology. It is written so non-technical types, like me, can understand. If you are interested in disasters, hazards, vulnerability assessments, or familiar with CAMEO, ALOHA, FEMA and NRC, etc. this book should be on your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Check this out if you like Edward Tufte (Envisioning Info.)
A great overview of how to convey information through cartography. The author chooses to focus on mapping environmental hazards to demonstrate this; their may be other topics that would lend itself to the exercise butthe chosen subject seems a perfect fit.
